Swan One Design Worlds The Swan One Design Worlds, hosted by the Real Club Náutico de Valencia, got underway in some style today with three races for each competing class delivering dramatic and exhilarating racing in brisk conditions off Valencia, Spain.

Following storms overnight the ClubSwan Racing fleet had to contend with a steady but shifting breeze that increased during the afternoon from 12-13 knots up to 20 knots amid two-metre waves, setting a true test for the crews who are a mix of amateur and professional sailors.

With tight racing the order of the day around windward-leeward courses, smart tactical calls could make all the difference to the final outcome of any given race.

Swan One Design Worlds

Pieter-Jan Postma extends on third day at Finn World Masters
Racing resumed at the Finn World Masters in Helsinki, Finland, after Tuesday was lost due to high winds. Pieter-Jan Postma, from The Netherlands, again stamped his authority on the fleet with two confident race wins to extend his lead from Laurent Hay, opf France, and Peter Peet, of The Netherlands.

Early forecasts indicated strong winds during the day but once the fleet arrived on the race course the wind moderated to 12-16 knots, despite a quite lumpy sea, which made the racing quite challenging for some. However it turned into a great day afloat with two beautiful races.

Straight after the start of each race Postma was in the lead and made his two victories look easy. Behind him, the fight was on for the other places with all the other age categories wide open. Laurent Hay got the best of the rest with two third places to maintain second overall, while Peter Peet scored a 2,6 to remain in third. Postma leads the Masters category and overall with four straight wins.

In the other categories, Laurent Hay leads the Grand Masters, John Greenwood leads the Great Grand Masters, while Hans Fatzer leads the Legends.

Racing continues until Friday.

Three new ORC Double Handed World Champions
Sandhamn, Sweden - Here at the Royal Swedish Yacht Club (KSSS) at the first-ever ORC Double Handed World Championship three new World Champions have been crowned for each of the three classes competing in the KSSS's Gotland Runt race, the world's largest annual offshore race.

These three winning teams are as follows: among the 27 entries in Class A, Anders Dahlsjo and Martin Stromberg, both from Sweden, won the race on their Z30+ ZEUS. In Class B there were 25 entries, with the winners from Germany being Jonas Hallberg and Till Barth fon their JPK 10.30 HINDEN.

And among the 27 entries racing in Class C at the top of the podium were two new champions from Sweden: Patrik Forsgren and Joakim Hoppe, who raced their modified First 36.7 TEAM PRO4U.

Corrected time results were certainly closer in Class B, with HINDEN's victory being by a 00:35:48 margin over fellow German Silver medalists Michael Hoefgen and Max Gurgel racing LIGHTWORKS, also a JPK 10.30. Finnish Bronze medalists Jens Krogell and Ville-Veikko Miskanen sailed ALMAVIDA, yet another JPK 10.30, were a distant 1:41:11 back in corrected time.

And in Class C TEAM PRO4U's margin of victory was the most substantial over her nearest rivals than in any class. Fellow Swedes and Silver medalists Mikael Algevere and Per Lindell on their X-332 Lady X were 2:01:41 behind in corrected time, while a Dutch team - Patrick ten Brinck and Harmen de Jong sailing their HOD 35 HODSPUR - finished another 1:33:06 behind Lady X, over 3.5 hours behind the winners.

Winners of the all-amateur Corinthian team trophies were the Bronze medalists on JOLENE in Class A, the Swedish team of IMBRUGLIA, an Arcona 340 raced by Staffan Larsson and Magnus Wegrell, and the World Champions on TEAM PRO4U in Class C. -- Dobbs Davis

Resurgent 1720s Will Celebrate 30th Anniversary At Volvo Cork Week

1720 When anybody asks how the concept of the Cork 1720 Sportsboat Class first came to see the light of day in Crosshaven in the early 1990s, the response these days tends to be "Which version of the story would you prefer?". For in all, more than 160 of these Tony Castro-designed 26ft dayboats with bulb keel, retractable bowsprit and mighty gennakers were to be built, and at Cork Week 2000 their fleet mustered more than 60 boats.

Local names like Mansfield and O'Leary took on visitors like Ainslie, Barker and Spithill. It was undoubtedly a highlight of class history. Since then, the 1720s have waxed and waned as a class, but at the moment Class Captain David Love is happy to report that they're definitely in full-on waxing mode in Ireland, with growing classes at Crosshaven, Dun Laoghaire, Kinsale, Baltimore, Dunmore East, and Howth, such that they're looking to have 48 boats racing in the Europeans within Volvo Cork Week from 10th to 15th July.

The design may have been around for thirty years, but the 1720s still look bang up-to-date

For those who don't know, it's called the 1720 Class simply because 1720 was the year of foundation of the Water Club of the Harbour of Cork, the direct antecedent of the Royal Cork Yacht Club. Now as it happens, on the 12th July in the other end of Ireland, some people will be celebrating an earlier contest, which took place in 1690. In that, the people from around Cork tended to be on the side which won the Silver Medal. The Silver Medal from the Battle of the Boyne is not something to be sniffed at. But nevertheless the 30th Anniversary of the Cork 1720 on 12th July 2022 at Crosshaven will be much more fun.

The 1720s are still as much fun to sail now as they were thirty years ago. -- W M Nixon

Svea wins Superyacht Cup Palma JClass

WHAT With a second place in the final short coastal race, the Swedish flagged Svea are overall winners of the J Class at Superyacht Cup Palma after four days of racing. Following Ranger's debut victory for her new owner at the Saint Barth's Bucket in March, Svea's maiden triumph under her new Swedish co-owners maintains a remarkable winning record for new owners' teams winning their first J Class regattas.

Ranger took victory in the last race of the regatta today, thereby ensuring that all four J Class teams competing won at least one race. Three of the four also counted one fourth in their scoreline, the exception being today's race winner whose hard-earned victory ended a run of all third places and elevated Ranger to third overall behind Topaz.

Svea's winning 1,4,1,2,2 scoreline left them two points up on Topaz which led the standings early on in the regatta. The maiden win for Svea is all the more remarkable considering it is just six weeks since it was delivered back to Palma from the USA. The Svea crew is a potent mix of youngsters and experienced grand prix racers such as Magnus Woxen, Ben Bardwell, Jens Dolmer and North Sails' Paul 'Flipper' Westlake. The key catalyst is Bekking, who previously built the Lionheart team into J Class World Champions and the dominant team five years ago, also winning here in 2014.

Superyacht Cup Palma, J Class Final standings
1 Svea 1,4,1,2,2, 10pts
2 Topaz 2,1,2,4,3 12pts
3 Ranger 3,3,3,3,1 13pts
4 Velsheda 4,2,4,1,4 15pts

International Etchells Saida Cup Regatta 2/3 July
14 UK Etchells took to the Solent this weekend to compete in the Sadia Cup run by the Royal Thames Yacht Club with Phil Hagen as the Race Officer. Click on image to enlarge.

Taittinger Cup As the clock counts down to the 2022 Taittinger Royal Solent Yacht Club Regatta (Friday 22nd - Sunday 24th July), entries continue to roll in for this popular South Coast regatta based in Yarmouth, Isle of Wight.

Currently, the regatta's fleet this year numbers 180 boats with the Nordic Folkboats supplying 24 entries and the X One Design fielding 26 boats, as these two classes dominate White Group. In the same group, the Sigmas have been given their own division for 2022 with seven boats entered so far and some intensely competitive racing expected from this modern classic fleet.

Meanwhile, in Black Group, the Taittinger RSYC Regatta is the third event in the SCRA IRC Championship and, new for 2022, the weekend's racing is part of the Swan Solent Series with the introduction of an IRC Swan class with five entries at present. Plus, there are a record 14 entries in the Black Group's Contessa 32 class this year.

Prospective entries have until midnight on 15th July to apply for a place.

Foiling Week
The ninth Italian edition of Foiling Week has come to an end. A record week for regattas, guests, and events. 175 registered boats divided into five racing classes (Moth, WASZP, ETF26, ONEFLY, and Wingfoil) and more than two thousand people visiting the Fraglia Vela Malcesine among athletes, coaches and guests. The perfect weather conditions throughout the week allowed spectacular challenges in the waters in front of Fraglia Vela Malcesine and an average of five races per day per class, thus completing the program.

The queen class in terms of entries and level of participants was the Moth class, which saw 77 athletes compete. Important names such as Ruggero Tita, Dylan Fletcher Scott and Paul Goodison were at the start. The podium was composed by Dylan Fletcher Scott (GBR 10), Nicolai Jacobson (NOR 4882) and Mattias Coutts (NZL4774).

The WASZP class, this year in preparation for the Worlds next week right here at the Fraglia, had 66 boats at the start. In a class that is proving to be extremely interesting in terms of the number of entries and new owners being added each year. The podium was composed of: Ettore Bottacini (ITA 3135), Charles Cullen (IRL 2987), and Ezio Savoini (ITA 3203).

With 13 starting boats the podium of the ONEFLY was at the end: Léo Maurin (FRA 37), Louis Chambet (FRA 7), and Gabriel Skoczek (FRA029).

Among the 8 ETF26s on the Lake during these days, the podium went to Teampro - FRA10 (Jean Christophe Mourniac, Benjamin Amiot and Pierre Yves Durand), second the New Zealanders of Live Ocean Racing - NZL 64 (Olivia Mackay, Helena Sanderson and Serena Woodall) and third the French of Youth Foiling Team - FRA 00 (Charles Dorange, Pierre Boulbin and Jean-Baptiste Ducamin).

Among the 18 Wingfoils in race, Francesco Capuzzo (ITA 73) came out on top, followed by Alessandro Jose Tomasi (ITA 70) and Luca Franchi (ITA 76).

Project Speed: A Record Of The Records
The Wind Powered Land Speed World Record has two governing bodies. There's NALSA, (North American Land Sailing Association) and there's also FISLY (International Land and Sand Yachting Federation).

Pilot Glenn Ashby has been working away in the background organising the required processes to ensure any attempt at the world record will be officially recognised.

"Both of those associations (NALSA & FISLY) can effectively ratify the result." explained Ashby.

Everything needs to be checked off by the official measurer that we will have on site. That judge, if you like, will also oversee the timing equipment and make sure that everything's above board. We use a GPS system, a timing and a tracking system and there cannot be any stored energy as such in the craft. So every function that you do, whether it be steering or trimming the wing, all needs to be direct drive and provided only by human power. So all things being equal, we should have everything set up really well."

For Ashby, as the pilot at record breaking speeds that will need to exceed 202.9km/h, his control is not much more than a two finger operation on a lever, some foot pedal pumps and some small steering adjustments when the craft is going really, really fast.

It isn't just the craft itself that has stringent rules around it, the surface that 'Horonuku' will sail on is also restricted.

"The wind powered land speed record absolutely needs to be done on a natural surface. So it cannot be a tar sealed road or anything like that.
