44Cup Marstrand: Two In A Row for Poons and Charisma

Charisma A miserable day weather-wise off the west coast of Sweden turned magnificent, like the fortunes of Nico Poons' Charisma, which after three races today claimed the 44Cup Marstrand over Igor Lah's Ceeref powered by Hrastnik 1860 and Chris Bake's Team Aqua. This was the Dutchman's second consecutive 44Cup win following his massive 12 point Cascais victory in May.

Ceeref powered by Hrastnik 1860 started the day leading by a point. At this stage six teams could still win. However in today's first two races, with the southerly gusting to 20 knots in the squalls and the sky for the first time grey and overcast, bringing occasional rain, it was Charisma and Team Aqua that were strongly on the ascent.

After a regatta of mixed results, Peninsula Racing's John Bassadone was delighted to have finally scored a bullet. With double Olympic Finn gold medallist turned America's Cup tactician Giles Scott calling tactics on board, his Gibraltar team is undergoing a metamorphosis. "It has been a long time coming. We haven't been sailing badly. The boat has been fast, but we have made a lot of unforced errors and silly mistakes... I don't think the overall result represents where we should be. It is very frustrating but it is good for the guys to get a win at the end of the regatta."

Hosted by the Marstrands Segelsallskap with the support of the Marstrands Havshotell, the 44Cup Marstrand was the third event of the 2022 44Cup which will continue over 12-16 October with the major fixture of the season - the RC44 World Championship, taking place in Portoroz, Slovenia.

Ganesha wins Superyacht Cup Palma

Superyacht Cup Palma In a testing final day amid challenging conditions the ultimate outcome of the 2022 Superyacht Cup Palma could not possibly have been closer.

The destination of the overall Superyacht Cup Palma Trophy remained in doubt until the end of the St. Regis Race Day, with the end result only decided on countback.

Once all results were in, the awe-inspiring J Class contender Svea and the elegant 46m Class B sloop Ganesha finished level on points with identical score lines. With a certain Hindu deity perhaps tipping the balance, Ganesha emerged the overall victor thanks to her last race win, with Svea taking second in hers.

Svea meanwhile could take some consolation after emerging the worthy winner of a hard-fought J Class contest.

As a further indicator of the competitive nature of Superyacht Cup Palma, the Class A contest was also decided on countback, with the striking high-performance Malcolm McKeon designed Pattoo taking the class from Kiboko Tres, with her last race victory settling the outcome.

One yacht to fall foul of the difficult to predict wind was the modern classic Savannah, which had gone into her final Class B race in pole position for the overall SYC prize – not least thanks to her one second victory over her rival Ganesha yesterday – before becoming becalmed in the bay. Ganesha went on to win the race, Class B and the title. -- Daphne Morgan Barnicoat

Winners are Grinners at Key Yachting J-Cup
The Key Yachting J-Cup, in association with B&G, was topped-off with a third day of fantastic conditions in The Solent. Classic south westerly breeze, pumped up to 15 knots with more in the gusts, but the wind was with the tide for most of the day, giving a flatter sea state. Three races were completed by all classes to bring racing at the 2022 Key Yachting J-Cup to a conclusion.

Race winners on Day Three: J/122 Jahmali, J/105 Jacana, J/92 J'ronimo, J/92 Upstart, J/111 McFly, J/111 Jagerbomb, J/109 Joule, J/109 Jumping Jellyfish, J/109 just So, J/70 Chaotic, J/70 Standfast and J/70 Jeepster.

It was a special night for the J/70 Jelvis team; a tremendous performance in becoming the 2022 J/70 UK National Champions in a fleet containing Olympic medallists and world champions. For the championship victory and through Martin Dent's significant contribution to the J/70 UK Class, Jelvis was also awarded the 2022 J-Cup, to a huge ovation at the final prize giving ceremony at the RORC Clubhouse in Cowes.

Jelvis sailed beautifully to win the 27-strong Open J/70 UK National Championships, with four race wins out of eight contests. Paul Ward's Eat Sleep J Repeat was runner-up with Nick Phillips' Chaotic scoring a 1-2 in the final two races to snatch third by a point from Doug Struth's DSP.

ORC Double Handed World Championship
Stockholm, Sweden - Today the three starts for each class at the ORC Double Handed World Championship could not have been more spectacular under sunny skies and downwind conditions. The 91 entries were sent off by race managers from the Royal Swedish Yacht Club (KSSS) and led the larger Gotland Runt fleet through a labyrinth of channels and passages to start to exit the Swedish archipelago about 6 hours after their start.

The ORC DH fleet positions are being tracked in real time by the TracTrac system

The fleet will make great progress tonight as the forecast is for the southwest breeze to hold in strength. The course being a reach will allow the fast boats to overtake the slower ones, and with >200 boats behind them it will be exciting indeed this evening.

The midsummer Swedish night will not be very dark, so all competitors will enjoy the long parade of racing yachts, both DH and full-crewed, all night long.

50th anniversary of the first yachts to race round Cape Horn -- Cape Horn Race 2026
Cape Horn Race 2026 The Cape Horn Race is divided into two parts.

Part 1 consists of a staggered start from Port Stanley through Le Maire Strait, to Cape Horn on IRC handicap rules with no classes, no assistance, and where the first yacht to arrive at Cape Horn Island wins...

24 hour Pit-Stop : Reunion and review of all yachts at anchor in the UNESCO National Park Cabo de Hornos.

Part 2 : a race within a race : the first race round Cape Horn Island, with a staggered start, so that the first yacht to arrive at the mythic meridian of Cape Horn wins. This creates a spectacle of about 30 or more yachts racing round Cape Horn Island simultaneously, thus providing both safety and media impact. Yachts continue to race east non-stop past Cape Horn Island, finishing the race at Port Stanley.

Alec Honey has organised many yacht races and events as a Joint Services Yachtmaster Instructor. In 1973, he assisted in a Royal visit of HRH Pricess Ann to Great Britain 2. Subsequently in 1979, he escorted HRH Prince Charles on an official visit to « L'Ecole des Troupes Aeroportés, Pau, France. Alec was project manager, co-skipper and navigator onboard Great Britain 2 in the first Whitbread RTWR, 1973-1974, and was the first yacht-racing team navigator to race round Cape Horn, and round the world in a record-breaking time.

Alec is a senior member of RORC (1974), and the International association of Cape Horners Saint-Malo, British Section (1974), Cape Horners UK, IACH, London. Honey is a member of the Chilean Cape Horners Brotherhood, Valparaiso (2006). Honey is qualified as RYA Dayboat Coach (1978), RYA Yachtmaster Instructor (1980), RYA Ocean Yachtmaster (1981), Chief Instructor and Principal of the Mediterranean Sailing School, recognised by ISSA, FFV and RYA (1981-1986).

As co-skipper onboard RTWR yacht Great Britain 2, Alec gained experience in team selection, race logistics, and leadership. As a major in the Parachute Regiment, Alec Honey organised yacht racing and other major events in Europe, Middle East and Far East. In 1992, Honey was training skipper of Rhône Poulenc, organising a number of yacht races for British Steel Challenge, 1992-1993.

The 50th anniversary of the first yachts to race round Cape Horn, 23 January 1974️ has been the brain-child of Alec Honey since 2006, when he was conference-speaker onboard Queen Mary 2's maiden voyage around Cape Horn Island. Alec founded Cape Horn Race in 2006 at Valparaiso with the late Rear Admiral Roberto Benavente, Chilean Navy. Since this time Honey has developed Cape Horn Race, round Cape Horn Island Race, as an original project. This has involved detailed race discussion with Argentinean and Chilean authorities ; and the Argentina Navy and Chilean Navy in 2006, 2010 and 2017 in Buenos Aires and Valparaiso. Alec has made many high-level contacts in each country, and has gained experience in event marketing and media promotion from 2006 to date...

Volvo Cork Week
Racing at Volvo Cork Week starts 11th of July, after a four-year hiatus. The Royal Cork Yacht Club was 300 years old in 2020, but due to Covid the regatta couldn't happen. Waiting two more years to celebrate the first tricentenary of any yacht club has not blunted the enthusiasm for Volvo Cork Week, if anything, the legendary Craic of Crosshaven will be bigger than ever.

The international fleet is approaching close to 200 boats for Volvo Cork Week, and the majority will be racing under IRC and ECHO Rules for the Irish ICRA National Championships.

Racing divisions:
IRC Zero
IRC One
IRC Two
IRC Three
Non-Spinnaker Class

Hundreds of sailors from all over the world will be competing at the ICRA National Championships, looking to take on well-sailed Irish boats," commented ICRA Commodore Dave Cullen. "ICRA trophies will be awarded to each class, including the highly sought Irish Sailing medals and of course potential places at the annual Irish Sailing All Ireland Sailing Championships. It is going to be a fantastic week of racing at Volvo Cork Week."
