Beau Geste, Essentia44 & Sugar 3 are 2022 ORC World Champions
Porto Cervo, Sardinia - After five days of competitive sailing with a long offshore and six inshore windward/leeward races, three new ORC World Champion teams have emerged here at the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda.

In Class A Karl Kwok's (HKG) TP52 BEAU GESTE, driven by Ken Read (USA) and guided by tactician Gavin Brady (NZL), were among the early favorites but had not raced in an ORC Worlds since 2018 when they won Class A in that year's Worlds. The 9th place earned in the non-discardable Offshore race was due to a filling breeze that favored the slower boats in the class, but the remainder of their scorecard was impressive with 3-1-1-1-1-2 in the inshore races. This pushed them out on top of the standings where they stayed

In Class C there was a similar dominance by one team, who were also past ORC World Champions. Ott Kikkas's (EST) Italia 11.98 SUGAR 3 won the 2019 Worlds in Sibenik, Croatia with this boat and were runner's up in last year's Worlds in Tallinn, so they too were favorites coming into the event.

Superyacht Cup Palma 2022 - Day 2
Photo by Ingrid Abery, www.ingridabery.com. Click on image for photo gallery.

Superyacht Cup Palma The entire Superyacht Cup fleet made the Bay of Palma their arena today as Europe's longest-running superyacht regatta hit its stride with another day of sparkling Mallorcan sailing conditions.

Pantaenius Race Day saw slightly lighter breeze than Wednesday's opening races for the J Class, but the 11-strong fleet showed their mettle in a hard-fought three hours-plus coastal race, with the outcome of the three class contests in doubt until the final legs on each course.

The elegant 27m modern classic Savannah led the rest of the Superyacht Cup fleet away, the first in a series of staggered starts which soon filled the bay with a diverse cross-section of impressive superyachts.

Racing in Class B the Pedrick-designed Savannah had her work cut out to match the pace of the 46m Ganesha, the powerful Oyster 1225 Archelon and bluewater cruiser La Belle, but she made the most of her handicap rating to take the class win.

Class A saw a tussle for supremacy between the 32m Farr-designed carbon flyer Kiboko 3 and the similarly high-performance 33m sloop Pattoo, with both making a striking impression as they raced on a leg up the eastern side of the bay framed by the rugged coastal cliffs at Badia Gran. At the finish it was Kiboko that edged the contest.

Racing continues on Friday with New Zealand Race Day before Saturday's concluding St. Regis Race Day – supported by SYC's Preferred Hotel Partner the St. Regis Mardavall Mallorca Resort – completes the Superyacht Cup Palma.

44Cup Marstand
The eight teams and their high performance one design RC44 yachts were eased gently into the regatta. There was flat water and brilliant sunshine, while the northwesterly wind started at the lower end of the spectrum, at 6-8 knots, for the first race and then built to a moderate 12-14 for the third and final one.

Torbjörn Törnqvist, host of the 44Cup Marstrand, steered his royal blue RC44 to victory in the first race, taking the left side of the course on the first upwind as the rest of the fleet went right.

Then in the third race, Artemis Racing looked set to score her second bullet of the day, leading at the top mark only to lose it on the first run. "We missed the gybe in," admitted Horton. "It [the wind] switched over and started working near the shore on the downwinds."

Ultimately Artemis Racing has ended up leading after day one, albeit on countback, tied on points with Team Nika, a past victor here in 2017 and winner of today's second race after they started to weather of the fleet and pulled ahead by claiming the right – ironic after Artemis Racing won the first race by going left. In race two Team Nika finished narrowly ahead of Igor Lah's Ceeref powered by Hrastnik 1860 and John Bassadone's Peninsula Racing.

Racing continues Friday with a first warning signal scheduled for 1130 CEST.

Results after three races:

1. Artemis Racing, 8
2. Team Nika, 8

Cowes Classics

Cowes Classics Day 2 of Cowes Classics Week saw South Westerly winds from 8 to 15 knots and some sun, giving competitors an easier day's racing and enabling two races for the classic dayboats on the bank and one longer race for the classic yachts. Day visitors to the regatta were the Victorys, getting in three races, the last one being back to their base at Portsmouth.

The classic yachts were sent off to the west to Gurnard Ledge and Cowes Yacht Haven, and then down to the east as far as Howden Fastnet and the Royal Yacht Squadron racing mark over on the Lee on Solent shore, and then up and down to the Ryde Middle, before finishing on the Royal London line at Cowes. The Old Gaffers had a course to Williams Shipping, not as far to windward, then to Royal Thames, East Bramble up to the Ryde Middle and home.

Division 1 was won by Bojar followed by Sunmaid V and Crusade. Spirit of Tradition class was won by Chameleon of Cowes with Bel Canto second. Division 2 was won by Binkie II followed by Sally of Kames and Janessa, and Division 3 by Warrior followed by Zest and Paloma third with the Old Gaffers won by Alberta with Spinaway X second.

The XODs raced on the bank from a committee vessel stationed near the Hamble Winter Series racing mark, with a windward leeward race following a general recall and then a round the cans race up and down the bank from Williams Shipping to Hill Head, finishing at RORC rather than off Cowes Green due to shipping movements in the main channel. With John Tremlett helming Astralita counting a UFD the day was won by Ben McGrane helming Swallow, followed by Claire de Lune and Tortoise. -- Giles Peckham

Foiling Film Festival, First Edition, The Winners
The Foiling Film Festival has found its winners. Last night, in the 14th-century Palazzo dei Capitani in Malcesine, the awards ceremony of the first edition of the world festival entirely dedicated to the cinematography of "flying boats" took place.

The award for best foiling film of the year went to the medium-length film "GONE WITH THE WING" by Andrew Englisch, Australia (2022), who was in the audience with his family. It retraces Englisch's own first world attempt to cross by Wingfoil, the treacherous Bass Strait (between Australia and Tasmania). An ordeal that helped him recover at a very difficult time.

Best Series 2022 is "CHALLENGER FOR NOW" an 8-episode production by America's Cup team Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli, represented for the occasion here on Lake Garda by Stefano Baruffaldi, the drone-man and design team member involved in the filming of the film.

The prize for best short film was awarded to "VENT" by Pietro M. Bressan, Italy. It is an intimate tale between Olympic champion Ruggero Tita and the wind, or rather the winds of Garda, seen as magical presences that accompany the sailor in his training discipline

The award for best story goes to "LINKED OUT - VENDEE GLOBE" by Thomas Sametin, which presents the genesis, difficulties and satisfactions of French skipper Thomas Ruyant in building his boat with Vendee Globe 2020 as a goal.

First Finn World Masters set to begin in Helsinki
Seventy years ago the Finn changed sailing history and put in its first appearance at the Olympic Games in Helsinki, Finland. To celebrate this occasion, the Finnish Finn sailors decided to hold the 2022 Finn World Masters in Helsinki and after three years of planning, it opens this weekend with around 125 sailors from 22 countries expected to take part.

Racing starts on Monday 3 July, while the Open Finnish Championship is currently underway, giving many competitors some valuable preparation time on Helsinki's tricky waters. Despite many fearing cold weather, Finland is currently experiencing a heat wave with 27-30 degrees and 15-20 knots wind.

The entry includes a lot of new names for the Finn Masters and no recent winners. The most recent winner here is John Greenwood, from 2002, who has been training hard with Tim Tavinor, who is making a welcome return to Finn sailing. Also from Britain, Lawrence Crispin and Allen Burrell should figure well.

Last year's Grand Master champion Laurent Hay, from France, is still looking for his first overall win, but will be up against last year's European Masters champion, Akos Lukats, from Hungary, Christoph Christen, from Switzerland, and the ever strong Dutch team led by Bas de Waal and Karel Hellemond. -- Robert Deaves
