Perfect in Porto Cervo
Porto Cervo, Sardinia - Classic Costa Smeralda weather greeted the fleet today on Day 5 of the 2022 ORC World Championship, held at the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS). The clear skies and brisk breeze of 18-20 knots was perfect for another two competitive windward/leeward races before the wind went through a massive late afternoon wind shift during the third race to cancel more racing for the day.

In Class A two more bullets earned today for Karl Kwok's (HKG) TP52 BEAU GESTE has placed them ahead of yesterday's leader, Fernando Chain's (ARG) Swan 45 FROM NOW ON, by a margin of 8 points. BEAU GESTE has lept ahead by minimizing mistakes and avoiding the bad luck that befell other teams in this class: Roberto Monti's (ITA) TP52 BLUE has had strong inshore race results, but cannot discard their retirement in the long race; Peter Harrison's (ESP) TP52 JOLT 3 has withdrawn due to a crack discovered in their mast; and Frederic Puzin's (FRA) Ker 46 DAGUET 3- CORUM finished second in her two races today, but had to retire in the second race yesterday - yet tomorrow the 21 points they earned in that race could be discarded and bring her right back into contention.

In Class C things look straightforward for the leader, Ott Kikkas's (EST) Italia 11.98 SUGAR 3. Their mixed ITA-EST team is poised and comfortable with an 8-point margin over their runner up sistership SCUGNIZZA and an impressive scoreline: 2-1-1-1-1.

The forecast for Thursday is for the wind to lighten and shift to the south, and the first windward/leeward race scheduled to start on both course areas at 1100.

Topaz On Top After Two J Class Races at Superyacht Cup Palma
Photo Credit: Sailing Energy/The Superyacht Cup. Click on image for photo gallery.

Superyacht Cup While it was the new owners and crew of Svea that took first blood, winning the first J Class race of the 2022 Superyacht Cup Palma today, it is Topaz which are the early overall leaders. Although they conceded the first race lead to Svea - the Swedish flagged team which has Bouwe Bekking as tactician - Topaz finished second after sailing a clean, tidy race. They then won the second race by a slender 30 seconds to lead the four-day long Bay of Palma showcase regatta by two points.

The first of the two windward leeward races were contested in a streaky 6-8kts of SW'ly breeze and smart starting and using the best wind pressure seemed key. Ranger claimed the pin end of the start line but were over early and had to recross. Topaz then held the key left side of the first beat and were able to lead Svea round the mark. On the downwind Topaz gybed off early and Svea took the lead to cross the finish line first, giving the new Swedish owners a pleasant, rewarding induction to the J Class.

And while the Svea core crew may not be exactly rookies, neither to grand prix sailing nor the J Class, a victory on their maiden race outing together was a fitting reward for the new owners and all the hard work that the crew have put in since the boat arrived from the USA and this last week of hard training drills with the exacting Bekking setting a high standard.

Standings after two races
1. Topaz 2,1, 3pts
2. Svea 1,4 5pts
3. Velsheda 4,2 6pts
4. Ranger 3,3 6pts

Same but different - SWS Yachts
SWS Yachts Boat No5 in the Southern Wind 105 series displays more custom tweaks while maintaining every ounce of quality and performance... again

The fifth Southern Wind 105 was launched in March and like each of the four 105s that came before, Sørvind is subtly but significantly unique. Made to measure for a keen lifelong sailor, this SW105 is a pure performance cruiser: fast and comfortable in equal measure but above all simply a joy to sail.

'We are delighted that Sørvind's owner selected Southern Wind to build the superyacht of his dreams,' says Jeremy Peek, deputy commercial manager at Southern Wind. 'When we first met in early summer 2020, there was an instant connection and positive collaboration. The owner had clear ideas about what he wanted and what he did not like and fortunately, the Southern Wind 105 smart custom platform served as the perfect starting point. We were able to adapt certain aspects to match his design brief and now, only 21 months later, the yacht has already been delivered.' Launched in March, with sea trials completed in April, Sørvind is now on her maiden voyage from Cape Town to Mallorca where a busy charter season awaits.

Bermuda And Back
Team Alchemist sailed first in the 52nd Newport Bermuda Race with a crew of four - Darren and Glenn Walters, Ryan Novak-Smith and James Harayda. Then beginning on Sunday, June 26, in the Bermuda Short-Handed Return Race to Newport, Alchemist was crewed by a double-handed team of professional female racers - Sara Stone (UK/US) and Cat Hunt (UK). Here's their story, which is still unfolding.

Starting on June 17 with the Newport Bermuda Race, Alchemist turned in an impressive performance, covering the 635-nautical-mile course in less than 80 hours, finishing second in its class and third overall in the highly competitive Gibbs Hill Lighthouse Division.

Bluenose Yachts recruited the doublehanded team of Sara Stone and Cat Hunt to race Alchemist in the inaugural Bermuda Short-Handed Return for single- and double-handed crews. With over 20 boats entered for the race and boats ranging in size from 32ft to 53ft, the race got underway on Sunday, June 26. With a smaller crew, lighter winds, and more changeable conditions than the Newport Bermuda Race, the Bermuda Short-Handed Return has presented Sara and Cat with some difficult and, at times, frustrating challenges.

Fortunately, the Sun Fast 3300 is well setup for doublehanded sailing, and the team has excelled in the fickle conditions. After starting on Sunday, Alchemist had sailed some 470 miles by Wednesday afternoon and was sitting 3rd in Class and 3rd in Line Honors on the water. In the last day, the team successfully navigated the wind shifts and Gulf Stream eddies to clock the second fastest 24-hour distance traveled for the entire fleet.

The winner of the day was Harry Roome sailing Skua followed by Buccaneer, Mike Bond, and Marengo, Philip Pascall. On the seme circuit the Flying Fifteens had two races with Rob Goddard in Over the Moon wining the day and Martin Harrison again winning the Squibs in Hussar.

Pro Sailing Tour Reaches Halfway Mark
The seven foiling Ocean Fifty trimarans will descend on Saint-Quay-Portrieux, Saint-Brieuc, Brittany in the coming days ahead of Episode 3 of the Pro Sailing Tour which kicks-off on Friday with the first of two days of inshore racing. On Sunday at 1900, the fleet will set off on the offshore challenge that will take them from Bay of Saint-Brieuc to Cowes in the UK for the first time.

Having just completed Episode 2 in Brest over the weekend, the teams are locked in an intense battle for the podium spots. Currently holding the lead in the preliminary rankings by just 1 point British skipper Sam Goodchild onboard Leyton is the 2021 defending champion, but a trio of his French rivals are hot on his heels with Quentin Vlamynck on Arkema and Sébastien Rogues onboard Primonial leading the charge, followed by Erwan Le Roux (FRA) on Koesio, just a point off the podium.

The self-declared 'rookie' of the fleet Eric Peron, on Komilfo has made huge progress since the Corsica episode and is on equal points with Thibaut Vauchel-Camus on Solidaires En Peloton-ARSEP in fifth and sixth place, while Gilles Lamiré (FRA) on Groupe GCA-1001 Sourires is less likely to cause an upset at this stage.

GGR entrants struggle to make the start
The 1968 Sunday Times Golden Globe Race was the first ever yacht race around the world. Nine started and only one finished. The 50th Anniversary 2018 Golden Globe had 18 starters and only five finished. The third edition starts in two months from Les Sables d'Olonne and just getting to the start is too much for some! At least four of the current 22 entrants are likely to retire, or be removed from the race in days due to challenges meeting the strict Qualification and Safety Regulations - some of the toughest in the world of sailing.

Two entrants whose yachts are ready to go are sadly facing health issues and may not be signed off by the organisers medical team, MSOS.org. It is likely they will have to officially retire from the GGR in the weeks ahead. The oldest entrant and highly respected UK sailor, 80-year-old David Scott Cowper is struggling to complete a two-year refit of his Tradewind 35 yacht. Electrical contractors who were scheduled for various tasks cancelled their availability. He has been struggling to find replacements. The delivery of his mast and rigging was set back and now he is many months behind schedule. A lack of skilled workers has meant he is doing all the work himself. With the start just weeks away, it is highly likely he may not make the start.

Canadian, Gaurav Shinde is not so lucky. He is a month behind schedule and has not yet started the 3,500-mile passage across the Atlantic. All entrants must arrive at the prologue port of Gijon, Spain for compulsory safety briefings by 6th August, or face serious penalties, or possible exclusion from the GGR. To complicate the issue, Gaurav has not yet completed his compulsory 3-day STCW Proficiency in Medical Care course. He will have to travel to Amsterdam or Barcelona to complete it before the Gijon briefings. American Entrant Elliott Smith is in the same situation. He has not departed the east coast of the USA on his Gale Force 34 and must also do the Medical Care course. But will there be time?

2022 GGR entrants to date:
1. Abhilash Tomy (43) / India / Rustler 36

Arcona Yachts AB and Najad Yachts AB are to be split into two different companies following a decision by the board of directors of Arcona Najad Yachts AB.

Arcona's operation will continue to be run by the same team, led by CEO Urban Lagnéus.

A new CEO and board will for Najad will be established.

The directors say the decision to split the companies will enable accelerated growth.

The split will take effect immediately.

Arcona Yachts was established in Sweden in 1969. There are six performance cruiser models from 34ft to the new 50ft flagship, Arcona 50, the first of which was sold earlier in 2022.

Najad Yachts build bluewater cruising yachts from the island of Orust in Sweden.

The first Najad was produced in 1971. The Najad range consists of five models ranging from 39-57ft.

On Monday 15th August the 12th Half Ton Classics Cup will start on the Solent, organized by RORC Cowes and the Half Ton Class Europe (HTCE).

Today, the Half Ton Class Europe is proud to announce that the Antwerp-based shipping company FAST LINES BELGIUM has stepped on board as main sponsor of the event.

Founded in 1991 the Fast Group is a complete logistic service provider giving their customers "Sofa Style Service", operating a fleet of 5 boxshaped coastal vessels with a cargo capacity ranging from 3.000 to 3.500 Ton, allowing most types of breakbulk cargo to be shipped conveniently, safely and cost-effectively. Because they are shallow drafted and suitable for river trade these vessels are able to discharge 40-50 kilometers inland from the normal larger ports on the main coastline(s).

The Half Ton Class Europe is looking forward to combine their passion for sailing vintage amateur crewed yachts with FAST's key values of loyalty, communication, environmentally friendly multimodal transport and passion for the sea in general.

If approved by the French authorities, HanseYachts is looking at selling the shareholding of the French catamaran manufacturer based in Port Olona, to a consortium including long-time Privilege CEO, Gilles Wagner.

"HanseYachts is sincerely pleased that Privilege Marine is sailing back to independence. Both companies have learned a lot from each other. However, as the expected synergy effects could not be realised to the extent hoped for, this strategic step is now the best solution for both sides," said Hanjo Runde, CEO of HanseYachts AG.

Privilege is one of the oldest catamaran brands in the world and builds ocean-going luxury catamarans with sales prices ranging from 1.5 to 7 million Euros.

The company was acquired by HanseYachts AG in June 2019, but remained operationally independent.

Since the takeover, the entire product range has been completely renewed with corresponding success in the market. In addition to the successful facelift of the Privilege Signature 510, this was followed by a complete new build of the Privilege Signature 580, which is nominated for the coveted Multihull of the Year Award 2022.

The Signature 650 and Signature 750, also new models, are already physically under construction. As a result, Privilege's order book has grown to its current historic high of 57.4 million Euros.
