5.5 Metre Scandinavian Gold Cup
The 2022 5.5 Metre Scandinavian Gold Cup began on Monday at Hankø, Norway, with race wins for Ku-Ring-Gai 3 (AUS 66, John Bacon, Terry Wetton, James Mayjor) and Jean Genie (GBR 42, Elliot Hanson, Andrew Palfrey, Sam Haines). In a first to three wins format, only race wins count.

The day began grey with light, shifty winds, with the first race sailed in 6-8 knots. However, during the day the wind gradually strengthened to peak at about 15-18 knots during the second race. However the rain held off during racing, while bucketing down before leaving the dock and after returning. Forecasts indicate that sunshine will return to Hankø for the coming days.

Meanwhile in the Royal Kaag Classic Cup, Trial (FIN 4, Ville Harkke, Peter Flinkman, Petri Lindstrom) took the wins. Many of the other boats already here in Hankø ahead of next week's World Championship are taking part in the Grundig Hankø Race Week.

Dark'N'Stormy performs Round the Island Race hat-trick
Ian Atkins' GP42 Dark'N'Stormy achieved an historic triple triumph for the 2022 Round the Island Race; taking Monohull Line Honours, winning IRC Zero and the race overall under IRC lifting the coveted Gold Roman Bowl. The triple was last performed by Simon Le Bon's Drum in 1988.

Dark'N'Stormy crew:
Nick Bonner, Abby Childerley, Mark Chisnell, Tim Corney, James Crampton, Dan Brown, Jono Macbeth, Adam Lees, Dan Primrose, Ian Tillett, Ian Walker, Ruaridh Wright.

The Dark'N'Stormy team received a tremendous ovation at the Round the Island Race Prize Giving. Tactician Ian Walker gave a speech on behalf of the team. "Thank you to the Island Sailing Club for keeping us all safe out there in a lot of breeze. This is such a wonderful race, I have done this race many times in the smallest and the biggest boats, it was a real privilege to sail with this team. Unfortunately, Ian Atkins the owner of Dark'N'Stormy, had managed to double book his schedule and was unable to race, so a big thank you to Ian for trusting us to race the boat, we made sure we didn't hit the wreck at The Needles! A big shout out to Khumbu who pushed us all the way and that is probably one of the reasons we did so well."

The GP Zero Class will be back in action for Round 3 of the 2022 Series at Cowes Week. A big welcome to the American Ker 40+ Tschuss skippered by Christian Zugel, which will be racing with all the GP Zero boats at Cowes Week from 30th July to the 5th August.

An International Fleet prepares for the Roschier Baltic Sea Race
Roschier Baltic Sea Race With the new Roschier Baltic Sea Race starting from Helsinki Finland on 21st of July, the international fleet is preparing for the Royal Ocean Racing Club's inaugural 630-mile offshore race. Over half of the teams on the current entry list come from countries on the Baltic Sea, including the host nation Finland, plus Denmark, Germany, Norway, Poland and Sweden. Teams from Great Britain and Spain will be sailing to Helsinki to take part in the race.

The overall winner of the Roschier Baltic Sea Race will score the best corrected time under the IRC Rating Rule. Two British JPK 1180s can be considered favourites for the overall win. Tom Kneen's Sunrise, overall winner of the 2021 Rolex Fastnet Race and Ed Bell's Dawn Treader; both making the trip to Helsinki. Tilmar Hansen's German TP52 Outsider, overall winner of the 2021 RORC Caribbean 600 will also be in contention.

Hot favourite for Line Honours will be the Supermaxi Tokolosh VII, skippered by the legendary Finnish sailor Ludde Ingvall who was born in Helsinki. The 100ft canting keel boat has undergone huge transformations over the years and has enjoyed tremendous success, including twice taking Line Honours in the Rolex Sydney Hobart and also the 2017 RORC Transatlantic Race. The biggest threat for Line Honours to Tokolosh VII will be two Volvo 70s; I love Poland and the Spanish VO70 Hypr.

The Roschier Baltic Sea Race will start and finish off Helsinki in the Gulf of Finland, incorporating the Swedish island of Gotland on July 21st, 2022. The official race supporters are the City of Helsinki, the Nyländska Jaktklubben (NJK), Finnish Offshore Racing Association (AMP), Helsingfors Segelklubb (HSK), FINIRC and the Xtra Stærk Ocean Racing Society. -- Louay Habib

No racing on Day 3 of the 2022 ORC World Championship
Today the Race Committee at the 2022 ORC World Championship decided the very light and shifty wind conditions were not suitable to hold any racing appropriate for a World Championship event. The intent was to conduct inshore windward/leeward races for Class C and Classes A and B together on two course areas east of the harbor at Porto Cervo, but the conditions with light air and highly variable wind shifts made it impossible to set a stable and fair race course.

Class A had one race start, but this race was abandoned as conditions deteriorated. On the Class C course area the conditions were even worse, with no start possible.

The weather forecast for Tuesday is more favorable, with afternoon winds from the north and northwest predicted to approach 15-20 knots, perfect conditions for Day 4 of the event. Windward/leeward racing is intended to start one hour earlier tomorrow at 1100 in anticipation of this forecast, with as many as three races possible if the conditions permit.

The remaining schedule for the event includes a short offshore race to be held on Wednesday 29 June, followed by inshore racing to resume on the final day on Thursday 30 June.

Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race: Class40 Combat Zone
Sevenstar Ten Class40s are among the entries and expressions of interest for the 2022 Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race organised by the Royal Ocean Racing Club. The race record for a monohull 40ft or less was set in the last edition in 2018 by Phil Sharp's Class40 Imerys Clean Energy in 8 days 4 hrs 14 mins and 49 secs. This year, realistically, seven Class40s can be considered capable of beating that record, but the legendary brutality of the 1,805 nautical mile race means that all of the Class40s are capable of winning their class.

Palanad 3 can be considered one of the class favourites for the 2022 Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race. Skippered by France's Antoine Magre, Palanad 3 has an international crew including Spain's Pablo Santurde and two Irishmen, James Crampton and James Murphy. In 2021 Palanad 3 was the champion Class40 in the Rolex Fastnet Race and took line honours in the RORC Transatlantic Race. In 2018, Antoine Magre was on Giles Redpath's Lombard 46 Pata Negra for the race, winning overall under IRC (Elapsed time: 9 days 8 hrs 35 mins 16 secs).

Xavier Macaire is set for the race with his new Verdier designed Groupe SNEF. Xavier has competed in 11 editions of La Solitaire du Figaro and narrowly missed taking the overall win for 2022. Macaire's first race in his Class40 was the Normandy Channel Race and is currently ranked fifth in the 2022 Class40 Championship.

Andrea Fornaro has entered his 2022 VPLP designed Influence for the race and has been racing Class40s for over 10 years, including coming second in the 2011 Rolex Fastnet Race as crew for Peraspera.

The Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race is one of the toughest races in the official Class40 calendar. Since 2010, twenty-six Class40s have attempted to complete the course; only eight have succeeded. -- Louay Habib

Gabart Vs Ultime Class: The Two Parties Expand On Their Positions
Thursday last week saw a hearing held in the Paris court to examine the action brought by the Kresk group against the Ultim 32/23 class, the two parties opposing on whether the SVR Lazartigue trimaran conforms to the exact rules of the class. After the hearing, Samuel Tual, CEO of Actual, and Ronan Lucas, director of Team Banque Populaire, explained themselves during a telephone press briefing. Tip & Shaft looks back on the day.

It had the air of a race start Thursday at 2 p.m. on the sixth floor of the Paris courthouse, room 6.10, where the Paris Court was examining on a fixed-day proceeding brought by the Kresk group against of the Ultim 32/23 class. The courtroom was busy with five lawyers on François Gabart side and two representing the Ultim 32/23 class. The lawyers were notably accompanied by Gabart skipper of SVR Lazartigue and the president of the Kresk group, Didier Tabary, Cécile Andrieu, team manager of the trimaran, and Thomas Normand who is general manager of MerConcept.

The other side not came solo: representing the Ultim 32/23 class, we could see Cyril Dardashti, general manager of Gitana Team, Jean-Christophe Moussard, team manager of Team Sodebo Voile, Guillaume Neron Bancel, communication director from the Actual Group, Emmanuel Bachellerie, co-founder of Ultim Sailing, which runs the former Actual for Arthur Le Vaillant and Thierry Bouvard, director of sponsorship and patronage of the BPCE group.

The president opened with a reminder of the facts before ordering the lawyers for both parties to be brief and precise - 20 minutes each, no more. It was Diane Lamarche, for the Kresk group, who opened and we quickly realised that the two parties would be giving nothing away. "The funniest thing is that the person who carried out the project for Macif [Jean-Bernard Le Boucher, ex-director of Macif's Marine Activity, Editor's note] and actually sold the boat to us as an Ultim trimaran with all the characteristics that go with it, is now general manager of the class. And he comes to tell me today that my boat is not an Ultim trimaran!"

Baby steps on the big beasts as Svea and J Class racing returns to the Bay of Palma
The J Class return to Superyacht Cup Palma next week (29 June-2 July), where four boats will race as a class at the event for the first time since Mallorca's 2014 showcase regatta. The widely anticipated return of Svea, which is being campaigned by three passionate Swedish 'co-owners', sees the newest J Class yacht in the fleet set to race in Swedish colours for the first time, measuring up against Ranger, Topaz and Velsheda.

Svea, which was built to a 1937 design of Tore Holm and launched in 2017, will start in Palma with a team which is mainly new to J Class racing, and that has eight times round the world racer Bouwe Bekking as skipper. Bekking is one of the most experienced J Class sailors who not only skippered Lionheart to win the J Class World Championship when it was last raced in Newport USA in 2017, but under his guidance Lionheart were winners at the Superyacht Cup Palma 2014 when five boats last raced against each other on the Bay of Palma.

The Superyacht Cup Palma is the first major European regatta of the 2022 season for the class, and comes after March's Saint Barth's Bucket, where Ranger with a new owner and crew, triumphed on their debut together racing in breezy, bumpy Caribbean trade wind conditions.

For Ranger's America's Cup winning helm Ed Baird, 'The Bucket' was his first J Class regatta.

While she didn't race at Saint Barth's, Topaz is one of the most polished teams after continuing to race as much as possible in recent years, mainly against Velsheda. With Peter Holmberg steering and Francesco d'Angelis on tactics, ace Palma based navigator Nacho Postigo and a well drilled, settled crew, they have the potential to win in Palma.

Racing for the J Class starts Wednesday and runs through to Saturday.
