Rolex TP52 World Championship Racing in winds which were much lighter than Cascais has built its reputation for, Doug DeVos US flagged Quantum Racing has the early lead of the Rolex TP52 World Championship after opening with two second places.

Defending champions Sled were penalised in Race 1, the resulting turns costing them three places and with that the chance to lie second overall. Takashi Okura's crew atoned immediately by winning the second race, passing Quantum Racing on the first run, that victory elevating them to fourth overall one point behind Platoon and Phoenix.

With the wind in the west blowing between eight and ten knots over both races Quantum Racing, with owner-driver Doug DeVos on the helm, started well and showed excellent patience and risk management to be able to deliver two good second places on what was a complex race course when tidal currents as well as wind pressure and shifts dictated strategies

First Kiel Week winners from five nations
The first Kiel Week 2022 winners have been determined and saw four Germans, three Danes and a Norwegian plus Hungarians and Kiwis in front in the international classes. The Gold Cup in the Folkboats was won by Soren Kæstel, Erik Andersen and Alex Lindegaard from near Copenhagen. The Euro Cup of the 29er went to George Lee Rush and Sebastian Menzies from New Zealand. At the halfway point on Tuesday, June 21st, the athletes once again enjoyed fantastic sailing conditions on the Kiel Fjord with light to moderate westerly winds and bright sunshine before the Olympic part of the sailing regatta will start on Wednesday, June 22nd.

"Despite the difficult Monday, we are very satisfied with the first part of Kiel Week" said head of organization Dirk Ramhorst. "We started the races an hour earlier on the last day. And we were rewarded with a terrific day, which rounded off the regattas of the international classes. We are now looking forward to the next five days with the Olympic disciplines, the 420s, the J/24s and J/70s as well as the ACO Musto Skiff World Championship. These will be more highlights with top fields." But before Kiel Week celebrated half-time with fireworks over Schilksee at night, Ramhorst was allowed to present the medals to the winners of the international classes.

Grand Prix Series from Robline
Robline Robline's proactive approach to product development is one of the main ingredients for delivering high performance racing lines for all kind of boats. Ideas for new products often come from its most demanding users - including some of the world's best sailors. The Grand Prix product series from Robline is a mix of ropes tested and optimized in race conditions. These rope constructions were successfully employed on TP52, M32, GC32, Club Swan 50, RC44, and other Grand Prix yachts. They come in diameters from 7.5 mm on up.

Some have covers made of 100% PBO; some use a mix of high-tech fiber cover. The highest performing among those lines feature breaking loads of up to 45 tons and are used as genoa sheets for mega yachts. We use three different types of cores, each surrounded by braided covers optimized for the respective diameters and types of use.

Thanks to our one-of-a-kind STS Stronger than Steel® technology, we are able to produce ropes featuring exceptionally low stretch for the required diameters. Those are ideally suited for Halyards and other minimum stretch applications. This allows Grand Prix sailors to keep the diameter, consequently also the wind resistance and the top weight low.

Do you want to be among the frontrunners on a regatta course? Then leave nothing to chance! Robline will help you to make your race success a reality!

Finishing-line looms large for SSE Renewables Round Ireland Race
With high pressure dominating, light winds have taken over for last stages of SSE Renewables Round Ireland Race where the 39-strong fleet is beginning the final 48 hours of the 705-nautical mile contest.

Strong tides, light winds and a forecast of fog will make the 100 miles to the finishing-line at Wicklow an intense affair as Franco Niggeler's Kuka3 defends a lead won shortly after the start on Saturday.

But the slowed pace of the leader has allowed the chasing pack to gain ground and the fleet is spread over two hundred miles of coast, stretching from Strangford Lough on the North-East coast to Sligo Bay to the North-West.

Gains brought on by favourable tide and some breeze have seen Classe 40 entries Kite skippered by Greg Leonard (USA) and Influence skippered by Andrea Fornarno both makes gains further offshore.

However, strong performances by Bob Rendell's Samatom and Michael Boyd's Darkwood were barely 30 miles behind the leader.

Wednesday will be a significant day, not least because the first finishers will arrive at Wicklow with 'Line Honours' decided, but also because the weather conditions for the bulk of the fleet will determine the fortunes for the eventual overall winner to be decided by the weekend.

International Etchells South Coast Championship
Rhys Lewis and Lawrie Smith. Click on image to enlarge.

Rhys Lewis and Lawrie Smith This weekend saw the Etchells South Coast Championship and world qualifier take place in the Solent organised by the Royal London Yacht Club under PRO Peter Taylor.

Day one of racing was slow to start with 4 general recalls before racing finally got underway for the 20 Etchells in the fleet. The race committee worked hard to deliver 3 great races in continuously changing conditions.

After three races, 'Mila', Lawrie Smith was leading the pack followed by 'Louise Racing', Grant Gordon, and 'Tango', Chris Hampton in third. The Corinthian fleet was lead by 'Swedish Blue', Ante Razmilovic, followed by 'Ziggy', Rhys Lewis and 'Shamal', Anthony Parke. Points were close so it was all to play for on the second day.

Day two, saw three more races completed with some very shifty up winds making racing very challenging. After the first race, the black flag was brought out and 3 boats were unfortunately disqualified. After some very close races the final results were, 'Mila', first overall sailed by Lawrie Smith, Richard Parslow, Goncalo Riberio and Ben Saxton.

First youth and Corinthian went to 'Ziggy' sailed by Rhys Lewis, Joe Bradley, Mike O'Donovan and Olly Dawson-McGill.

The next event is the Saida Cup with the Royal Thames Yacht Club which is the final world qualifiers on the 2nd/3rd of July. The World Championship takes place in Cowes 18th - 24th September. -- Jan Ford

Royal Lymington Yacht Club On Saturday 18th June, Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal visited the Royal Lymington Yacht Club (RLymYC) for an impressive Regatta Day celebrating the Club's centenary.

The Centenary Regatta Day and 'Apres Sail Festival' brought together members of all ages, their families and friends for a glorious celebration of one hundred years on the water. Flotillas of yachts, dinghies, motor boats and paddle craft took part in a wide variety of events during the day. Afterwards, members returned ashore for food, drinks, live music and fun activities including a Centenary Haybale Games on the green adjacent to the clubhouse.

Patron of the Club since 1979, the Princess was welcomed by Her Majesty's Lord-Lieutenant of Hampshire, Mr. Nigel Atkinson, New Forest District Council's Vice-Chairman, Councillor Neville Penman, Mayor of Lymington, Councillor James Hoare, and the Club's Commodore, Phil Lawrence.

The Princess Royal was introduced to Club's Flag Officers, Centenary Regatta organisers and a number of young sailors, before heading out on the water in a RIB to tour the Regatta.

A spectacular fleet of members' yachts dressed overall in nautical flags and motor cruisers anchored in lines on the Solent adjacent to the Club's Starting Platform for a Fleet Review by Her Royal Highness.

The Princess Royal then took the opportunity to watch the prestigious PotterShip Race, an annual event where members compete for the glittering PotterShip Trophy, given by the Club's founder, Major Cyril Potter, in 1937.

The Royal Lymington Yacht Club is considered very much a home of yachting, dinghy sailing and motor boating - bringing together likeminded people with a love of the sea. Find more information about the Club at rlymyc.org.uk.
