Inaugural New York Yacht Club Women's Championship
Newport, Rhode Island, USA: Patience is not often the primary attribute of the young. But there is no better word to describe the winning performance of Alie Toppa, and her crew of recent college graduates, at the inaugural New York Yacht Club Women's Championship, sailed out of Harbour Court in Newport, R.I., this past weekend.

The inaugural New York Yacht Club Women's Championship featured 20 teams of four or five women from across the United States, sailing in provided one-design Sonar keelboats. The Club received more than 40 expressions of interest to compete in the regatta, making it an accomplishment just to be invited. The regatta ran from Friday, June 17, through Sunday, June 19, with the winner receiving the Joan H. Towse trophy, named for the passionate sailor, race committee member and late wife of past New York Yacht Club Commodore Robert C. Towse Jr.

Toppa's College of Charleston Yacht Club team, which included Kate Nota, Maisie MacGillivray, Jo Ann Fisher and Emmy Horowitz, was in the hunt throughout the 11-race regatta, but didn't take outright possession of first place until after the final race was sailed. In fact, it wasn't until well after the team hit land that they discovered they had won the regatta.

The next edition of the New York Yacht Club Women's Championship is tentatively scheduled for June of 2024. The request for invitation process will start in late 2023. -- Stuart Streuli / New York Yacht Club

Italia Yachts Sailing Week
Porto Cervo, Italy: Enzo de Blasio's Scugnizza wins the first edition of this event by placing first in the Racer Division, sailing with the Spanish sailor Luis Doreste, a two-time Olympic gold medallist, as tactician. Michele Centemero's Sofima wins the Italia Yachts Challenge Trophy.

The first two days of the event saw the fleet sail along some of the most famous spots of the Costa Smeralda's Arcipelago di La Maddalena like the Passo delle Bisce and the islands Monaci and Mortoriotto. Today the fleet waited patiently on the water for a couple of hours for the breeze to fill in, but in the end the Race Committee hoisted the AP over A flag indicating that there would be no racing for the day.

The overall results saw Enzo De Blasio's IY 11.98 Scugnizza in first place. The same team placed first in the Racer Division too with perfect scores. Giulia, Rudolf Vrestal's IY 9.98 together with Sofima, Michele Centemero's IY 15.98 sailed well throughout followed closely by Giuseppe Gubbini's IY 10.98 Joshua 3. Sailing with Giorgio Saviani, Joshua 3 placed a very respectable fourth. Behind them Andrea G. Busso's IY 13.98 Sakura, Michele Vitulano's IY 14.98, Furia and Gino Rigotti's IY 13.98 Mezzaluna II all finished within three points of each other showing how close the scoreboard was.

The Italia Yachts Challenge Trophy was captured by Michele Centemero's Sofima, first in the Cruiser Division, the most numerous division on the water. Second and third in this division were Furia and Mezzaluna II.

Flying boats choose GORI Propeller
GORI It's an exciting time for the sport of sailing as designers push the boundaries and progressively, we are seeing more boats foiling. As a boat transitions from displacement to foiling mode, there are a number of factors designers take into consideration, one being drag.

Going back to the basis, in very simple terms, the larger the surface area of an item the greater the drag. Reduce the surface area and you reduce the drag.

As sailing campaigns look to minimise their drag, they explore the intricate details one being their propeller. Reduce the drag a boat gets from its propeller, and the more efficient she will be when in both displacement and foiling mode.

GORI Propeller has become recognised for designing propellers which offer low water resistance, effective manoeuvrability, and patented single drive technology with overdrive technologies. The comprehensive range of two, three, four blade and a racing propeller offers customers an option with a greatly reduced wetted area ultimately reducing one element of drag.

The ability of this propeller design to significantly reduce drag is one reason many boats of the foiling generation are choosing GORI Propeller folding propellers. 29 of the 33 starters in the last Vendee Globe all had GORI Propeller and the latest foiling boat to install one is FlyingNikka.

For more information on GORI Propeller and all the high-quality marine brands within the BSI Group including BSI Rigging, Hundested Propeller, Jefa Steering and OYS Rigging please visit bsidk.com

Kiel Week 2022 - Day 3
Waiting for wind and weather was the name of the game on the third day of the Kiel Week regatta for the crews in the ten international classes and for the offshore yachts. Thunderstorm cells around the Kiel Fjord made the racing day a game of patience. While the offshore yachts were sent out early to their Kiel Cup races and waited on the Kiel Bay in heavy rain showers for a suitable breeze, the sailors in the dinghy classes could prepare intensively in the Olympic harbor in the interplay of sun and rain for the departure signal. Weather expert Dr. Meeno Schrader saw a chance of a sailable weather window for the late afternoon and was right. At least the 29ers, ILCA 6 and Waszps went out on the water again. And the offshore sailors even managed the complete scheduled program with a short up-and-down race and a coastal race round the cans.

The favorites provided the highlights in the late light of the day. In the 29ers, the New Zealanders George Lee Rush and Sebastian Menzies remain sovereign at the top. In the ILCA 6, defending Kieler Woche champion Ole Schweckendiek from Kiel defended the lead he had taken on the previous day on his home turf. And as the fastest Foiler by far, Paul Farien, that is also from Kiel let his Waszp fly over the course.

Day 4 of Kiel Week 2022 will be livestreamed on Tuesday, June 21st with 29er (Euro Cup) starting at 10:45 (UTC +2). -- Andreas Kling

RORC Morgan Cup Race
The Royal Ocean Racing Club's race to Dartmouth for the Morgan Cup started on the warmest day of the year in the UK and ended with the hottest finish so far for the 2022 RORC Season's Points Championship. The RORC Race Team started the fleet to the east of the Squadron Line Cowes, around the southside of the Isle of Wight, and onwards to a finish line off Castle Ledge buoy, on the approach to the River Dart.

Jim & Ellie Driver racing Sun Fast 3300 Chilli Pepper in IRC Two-Handed was the overall winner by just 35 seconds from Shirley Robertson & Dee Caffari, also racing Two-Handed, with Sun Fast 3300 Rockit. Tim Goodhew & Kelvin Matthews completed a clean sweep for double-handed teams, finishing third overall in Sun Fast 3200 Cora, and winning IRC Three.

Congratulations to Antoine Magre's team racing Class40 Palanad 3 for taking line honours and the win in IRC Zero. Thomas Kneen's JPK 1180 Sunrise was back in action, winning IRC One, and Francois Charles' Dehler 33 Sun Hill 3 was the winner of IRC Four.

Sonar World Sailing Championships
Nefarious (USA 384), skippered by Bob Lawrence and Paul Sevigny, won six of ten races June 16-18 on Lake Sunapee, NH during the Casella 2022 Sonar World Championships. Nefarious sails out of the Noroton Yacht Club in Rowayton, CT. The regatta was highlighted by strong winds the first three days of racing with winds averaging 15-25 knots. Racing was cancelled the final day, June 19, due to even stronger winds. Second place went to Ping (CAN 754) from the Lunenburg Yacht Club in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, Canada, skippered by Andreas Josenhans, and third place went to Resonance (USA 787) from the host Lake Sunapee Yacht Club, skippered by Brian Doyle. Nefarious finished with 11 points, Ping 26 points and Resonance 27 points.

The Casella 2022 Sonar World Championships were presented by the Lake Sunapee Cruising Fleet and hosted by the Lake Sunapee Yacht Club. Twenty-two Sonar Class sailboats from as far away as Minnesota, Florida and Nova Scotia sailed in the regatta.

YCN Now, the region's local TV station and network, aired 15-minute daily recaps of the three days of racing on YCN Live. The recaps are also streaming on the YCN Now website at YCNnow.com. There is some dramatic drone footage of the racing, beautiful Lake Sunapee and the surrounding mountains including Mount Sunapee Resort.

Medemblik Sunshine Races
The second event of the M32 European Series was hosted by beautiful Medemblik in the Netherlands. It gave the M32 fleet fantastic racing over a range of wind conditions. In the heavy air on day one Vitamina Veloce Cetilar with Skipper Andrea LaCorte showed the fleet how it's done with a series of wins. They successfully defended their stellar performance of the first day and won the event and is now the new leader of the Series.

Two new teams joined the series for the Dutch event. PJ Postma, local hero and recent Finn World Champion, got a team together and showed that they will be a force to reckon with. Peter Warrer is rejoining the fleet this time with Olympic Gold Medallist, and son, Jonas Warrer as tactician. A gear failure on day one took them out of the podium fight but over the weekend they showed that they belong among the top teams.

The classic sailing venue at Lake Ijsselmeer showed its best side with southwesterly winds keeping the breeze off shore and having flat water favoured by the multihulls. 4 teams won races while all of them got top three results.

Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race: Class40 Combat Zone
Ten Class40s are among the entries and expressions of interest for the 2022 Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race organised by the Royal Ocean Racing Club. The race record for a monohull 40ft or less was set in the last edition in 2018 by Phil Sharp's Class40 Imerys Clean Energy in 8 days 4 hrs 14 mins and 49 secs. This year, realistically, seven Class40s can be considered capable of beating that record, but the legendary brutality of the 1,805 nautical mile race means that all of the Class40s are capable of winning their class.

Palanad 3 can be considered one of the class favourites for the 2022 Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race. Skippered by France's Antoine Magre, Palanad 3 has an international crew including Spain's Pablo Santurde and two Irishmen, James Crampton and James Murphy. In 2021 Palanad 3 was the champion Class40 in the Rolex Fastnet Race and took line honours in the RORC Transatlantic Race. In 2018, Antoine Magre was on Giles Redpath's Lombard 46 Pata Negra for the race, winning overall under IRC (Elapsed time: 9 days 8 hrs 35 mins 16 secs).

Xavier Macaire is set for the race with his new Verdier designed Groupe SNEF. Xavier has competed in 11 editions of La Solitaire du Figaro and narrowly missed taking the overall win for 2022. Macaire's first race in his Class40 was the Normandy Channel Race and is currently ranked fifth in the 2022 Class40 Championship.

Andrea Fornaro has entered his 2022 VPLP designed Influence for the race and has been racing Class40s for over 10 years, including coming second in the 2011 Rolex Fastnet Race as crew for Peraspera.

Laurent Camprubi has announced that he will be racing Groupe Berkem Two-Handed for the race with Edgard Vincens. A tough challenge for the 62 year-old Frenchman and his crew who are both new to Class40 racing. Laurent hails from Marseille and has enjoyed success in IRC racing and has completed the 2022 Transat Jacques Vabre in another Class40. Camprubi will be racing with his new scow design boat from the drawing board of top Mini Transat designer Etienne Bertrand.

First organised by the Royal Ocean Racing Club in 1976, the 1,805nm Sevenstar Round Britain & Ireland Race is a true marathon of epic proportions. Held every four years, the next edition will start on Sunday 7th August 2022 from the Royal Yacht Squadron startline in Cowes, Isle of Wight, UK.

ARC Portugal 2022 enjoys a perfect start
Under sunny skies and a gentle breeze, fifteen yachts gathered in the Plymouth Sound on Sunday morning to begin ARC Portugal 2022, cruising south to Marina de Lagos. The multi-stage rally has been running for over 25 years, bringing together a fleet of yachts to cross Biscay to Bayona and then cruise the Atlantic coast of Portugal, and conditions for Sunday's departure could not have been better to begin the month-long adventure.

For the 2022 edition, yachts gathered at Mayflower Marina in Plymouth, UK for a pre-departure programme, beginning on Thursday 9 June. The West Country berth-holder owned marina, has hosted the rally start since 1998.

With fair winds forecast, the fleet are expected to have arrived by Friday for a welcome sangria at the Monte Real Club de Yates in Bayona. Over the weekend, there are organised tours and free time to explore before the prize-giving ceremony for Leg 1 is held on Sunday evening. A further five yachts will join the rally in the Spanish port and Leg 2, to the Portuguese town of Povoa de Varzim, will set sail on Tuesday 21 June. Over the next three weeks, 2022 route features further stopovers in Figueira da Foz, Peniche, Oeiras and Sines, before reaching Marina de Lagos at the gateway of the Mediterranean - an ideal finishing point for a summer of cruising - and concludes with the final rally supper on 6 July.
