Line honours for Magic Carpet Cubed

Rolex Giraglia The fifth event of seven in the International Maxi Association's 2021-22 Mediterranean Maxi Offshore Challenge, this year's Rolex Giraglia returned to its traditional Saint-Tropez-Giraglia-Genoa course. However with ultra-light winds forecast, its organisers, the Yacht Club Italiano, in collaboration with Yacht Club Sanremo and Societe Nautique de Saint-Tropez, wisely scrapped the opening turning mark of La Fourmigue. Thus when the 20 maxis within the overall fleet of 141 set sail at 1200 CEST on Wednesday on this, it was on a course of 200 miles rather than 240.

Furio Benussi's 100ft grand prix maxi ARCA SGR was the boat to beat for line honours - highest rated under IRC and defending her title from 2021. Indeed she led on the water for the majority of the race, however nipping at her heels were the large Wallys - Charif Souki's Wallycento Tango, Jean-Luc Petithuguenin's 107 Spirit of Malouen and Andrea Recordati's 93 Bullitt but the most serious challenge came from Sir Lindsay Owen-Jones' Wallycento Magic Carpet Cubed. One of the most capped teams in this race's history, Magic Carpet Cubed had claimed line honours in 2013 and outright victory under IRC corrected time two years later.

Once again the overall IRC maxi prize favoured the 60 footers, in fact the exact same 60 footer that won in 2021: Adriano Calvini's Felci 61 Itacentodue, effectively the club boat of the Genoa-based Yacht Club Italiano.

Bringing up the rear in the maxi class was the 109ft Herreshoff-designed gaff schooner. While not best suited to this year's light wind race, the crew of the 109ft long Mariette of 1915 very much enjoyed it. As Vendee Globe skipper Miranda Merron reported from on board: "The advantage of no wind for much of the day was the wildlife fest - whales, dolphins, turtles, sunfish, mahi-mahi, tuna, bonito..."

SailGP Chicago
Two-time defending and reigning SailGP champions Australia have once again proved their prowess in the three boat winner-takes-all race, after scraping into the final and emerging triumphant winners in Chicago.

Tom Slingsby's team picked up a 99% fly time in light wind conditions to blow competitors Great Britain and Canada away in an identical final line-up to the Bermuda Sail Grand Prix last month.

It marked a remarkable come back for the Aussies, who battled back from a mediocre first day of racing and a last place finish in the fourth fleet race to knock Peter Burling's New Zealand out of contention by one point.

Tailored Solution - Musto
Musto Improved hiking is perhaps the biggest single key to improving Laser/ ILCA sailor performance. Musto have tackled the task head-on with specific and focussed innovations

It is a fact that a large part of the global popularity of the ILCA, (formerly known as the Laser), comes down to a design that pits sailor against sailor in identical boats. But among those that compete in this class at the highest level, it is also common knowledge that modern technology can and does make a significant difference. For Musto it is the combination of these two key factors that is at the heart of what could be one of the biggest potential advances for ILCA sailors.

For all the close scrutiny of minute details that is required to get to and stay at the top, there is one unavoidable hard and fast rule to improving performance in this class - hiking harder and for longer makes you go faster.

Arctic Vendee-Les Sables D'Olonne
The finish line of the 2nd Arctic Vendee - Les Sables d'Olonne has been closed since the arrival of the last competitor, Kojiro Shiraishi (DMG MORI Global One), Saturday June 18 at 10:33 p.m. The classification is now official, let's take stock of the sporting data of the race.

The winner is Charlie Dalin (APIVIA), who signed his second consecutive solo victory in this IMOCA season, after his success in the Guyader Bermuda 1000 Race last May. The Le Havre skipper recorded his fifth victory since entering the 60-foot monohull class after the 2019 Transat Jacques Vabre (double-handed with Yann Eliès), the 2021 Rolex Fastnet Race (double-handed with Paul Meilhat) and the 2021 Azimut Challenge ( doubles with Paul Meilhat). This is his seventh podium in as many races on APIVIA.

Jérémie Beyou (Charal) and Thomas Ruyant (LinkedOut) complete the podium, in that order. This podium displays the same composition as in 2020. Only the roles are reversed: Jérémie Beyou won ahead of Charlie Dalin and Thomas Ruyant.

The Belgian solo skipper Denis Van Weynbergh who had got to less than twenty miles from the finish line of the Vendee Arctique Les Sables race made the decision to finally 8.22pm this Saturday evening. His choice was made after succumbing to a succession of damages which have built up on board his IMOCA Laboratoires de Biarritz over the last 48 debilitating hours.

Franco-German skipper Isabelle Joschke, (MACSF) has retired from the Vendee Arctique Les Sables d'Olonne within 50 miles of the finish line because of damage to her mainsail sustained more than 24 hours ago.

Jack Jennings And Pedro Trouche (Usa/Bra) Are The 2022 Star North American Champion
Skipper Jack Jennings and crew Pedro Trouche have captured the 2022 Star North American Championship, hosted by Annapolis Yacht Club and contested on the Chesapeake Bay.

Jennings and Touche got the gun in Race 2 and also counted a second place and two thirds in posting a low score of nine points - seven better than the runner-up team of Augie Diaz and Bruno Prada.

It was the first North American crown for Jennings, a 42-year-old Chicago native who has been competing in the Star class since 2008. His previous best finish at North Americans was a sixth off Marblehead, Massachusetts in 2017.

Principal race officer Kevin Reeds did not send the fleet out on Wednesday due to lack of wind but was able to complete three races in 15-20 knot southerly winds on Thursday. Jennings and Trouche posted a 2-1-3 score line to take the early lead.

Friday brought 10-12 knot winds from the south and Reeds completed two more races. Jennings and Trouche placed 10th in Race 4 and that wound up being their throwout. They rebounded to take third in what proved to be the final race of the regatta.

Forecast for Saturday on the Chesapeake Bay was steady winds of 20-25 knots with gusts up to 30. After meeting with class representatives and the organizing authority, the race committee decided to cancel racing. Considering that six boats sustained rig damage in lighter winds on Thursday, that announcement was well received by most of the fleet.

Six Metre World Championship

Carroll's Argo Sets New Record Of 33 Hours In Newport Bermuda Race
Jason Carroll (New York City) and the crew of the MOD70 Argo outran every elapsed-time record associated with the Newport Bermuda Race when they completed the 52nd edition Saturday night at 2320:09 (ADT).

Argo's elapsed time of 33 hours, 0 minutes and 09 seconds is more than 30 hours faster than Carroll's Gunboat 62 Elvis set in the first multihull division in the 2018 Bermuda Race. It is also 1h:42m:42s faster than the 100-foot monohull Comanche's Open Division mark of 34h:42m:53s, set in the 2016 race. And it's more than six and a half hours faster than Rambler 90's mark of 39 hours and 39 minutes, which earned owner George David the Schooner Mistress Trophy in 2012 for fastest elapsed time by a monohull in the race's four major divisions.

Argo averaged 19.24 knots in setting the multihull course record, and sailed approximately 486 nautical miles in the 24 hours after the start. Argo sailed mainly to the west of rhumbline and took advantage of a meander in the Gulf Stream that gave it a favorable boost towards Bermuda.

* We regret to report that our Fleet Communications Office for the 52nd Bermuda Race received a report of a crew overboard on the racecourse this afternoon.

The crew of the yacht Morgan of Marietta, a 42-foot sloop, reported that its captain, Colin Golder of New Providence, N.J., went overboard early this afternoon in strong winds, approximately 325 miles from Bermuda, and did not survive.

After extended effort, Mr. Golder's body was recovered by the vessel's crew, and the vessel is returning to the mainland. Next of kin have been informed.

XXI Argentario Sailing Week
Click on image for photo gallery.

Argentario Sailing Week A south-easterly breeze at 16-18 knots gusting at 20, not a cloud in the sky and enough of a swell to spray the decks upwind. What more could one ask for from the fourth and final day of racing of the 21st edition of Argentario Sailing Week? The crews of the 30 classic yachts representing 117 years of history racing in Tuscany were able to enjoy the breath-taking scenery of Maremma from a completely different point of view compared to the three previous days when the thermal breeze was a westerly one.

The Vintage Gaff class was first to start at 11 a.m. with the fleet feathering up to the line and then heading towards the windward mark off the Yacht Club Santo Stefano with their bows on Giannella beach. Then it was the turn of the Vintage Marconi class, followed by the Classics and by the Spirit of Tradition class. Scud, owner Patrizio Bertelli, rounds mark 1 first overall and is in the lead of the entire fleet for most of the race. Later the mark off the YCSS clubhouse saw the rounding in very quick succession of Recluta (German Frers), Hallowe'en (Inigo Strez, Rowdy (Donna and Howard Dyer) Varuna of 1939 (Jens Kellinghusen) and Stormy Weather of Cowes (Christopher Spray). Spinnakers flying, the yachts set off in the direction of the Island of Elba to complete the 17-mile course and last race of the regatta.

After 2 hours and 12 minutes Sumurun owner Alain Moatti (Willam Fife III- 1914) cuts the finish line first overall.

Overall Winners of Argentario Sailing Week 2022

- Vintage Gaff class - the winner is Scud (Patrizio Bertelli), followed by Marga and by Chinook.
- Vintage Marconi class - Varuna of 1939 (Jens Kellinghusen), followed by by Stormy Weather) and by Comet.
- In the Classics, the overall winner is Il Moro di Venezia I (Massimiliano Ferruzzi) with Ojala II second and is Crivizza in third position.
- In Spirit of Tradition, Toi et Moi (Alessandro Maria Rinaldi) is the overall winner of the class, second Midva followed by and Hanni II.

Atlantic battle begins on day two of SSE Renewables Round Ireland Race
Photo by David Branigan/Oceansport. Click on image for photo gallery.

SSE Renewables Round Ireland Race The tightly stretched fleet in the SSE Renewables Round Ireland Race has already reached the Atlantic seaboard just over 24 hours since starting the 705 nautical mile offshore race.

Although the first day enjoyed remarkably fair conditions with no retirements, punishing headwinds have started the attrition with pre-race favourite InoXXX formally retired on Sunday afternoon.

James Neville's 42-footer suffered hull delamination in the pounding upwind conditions close to the Blasket Islands off the Co. Kerry coastline and has turned for home.

Four boats now form the leading group separate from the main bulk of the fleet that are stretched along the Kerry and West Cork coastline as far as the Fastnet Rock.

Franco Niggeler's Cookson 50 Kuka3 continues to hold the overall lead on the water that the Swiss entry established from InoXXX shortly after passing Wicklow Head at the start on Saturday afternoon.
