Perfect scorelines for Jethou and Capricorno -- Rolex Giralia Inshore
Often yacht races are close and go to the wire. This week's Rolex Giraglia inshore racing was not one of them. Organised by the Yacht Club Italiano in collaboration with Yacht Club Sanremo and Societe Nautique de Saint-Tropez, this was the third event of six in the International Maxi Association's 2022 Mediterranean Maxi Inshore Challenge.

Among the 13 maxis (within the 100+ full Rolex Giraglia inshore fleet) divided into two classes, there were stand-out performers: Sir Peter Ogden's Judel-Vrolijk 77 posted a perfect scoreline from four races among the bigger maxis finishing the three days four points ahead of Peter Dubens' Maxi 72 Northstar of London. In third Sir Lindsay Owen-Jones' Wallycento Magic Carpet 3 was a further two back, winning her intense battle with fellow Wallycento, Charif Souki's Tango.

Meanwhile in the smaller maxi class, Alessandro del Bono's Capricorno, also scored four bullets. The 79ft Reichel-Pugh designed IMS maxi beat IMA President Benoît de Froidmont's Wally 60 Wallyño by four points, in turns squeaking in one ahead of Adriano Calvini's Felci 61 Itacentodue.

Both Jethou and Capricorno will be awarded with IMA trophies for the best placed owner-driver IMA member at Saturday's Rolex Giraglia prizegiving at the Yacht Club Italiano in Genoa.

The inshore racing concluded Tuesday with a further windward-leeward, albeit shortened, on the Baie de Pampelonne. This was well received by the competitors, many of whom believed racing would be impossible today due to the lack of wind. America's Cup legend Brad Butterworth, tactician on Jethou, praised the organisation: "The race committee did a great job. Today was looking like not being a good day to race, but they managed to fit one in." The race committee included Ariane Mainemare and Alfredo Ricci from the International Maxi Association.

As is often the case off Saint-Tropez, conditions approaching mid-summer are light and this was generally the case over the last days, save for a near-perfect Sunday raced in 10-15 knots. -- by James Boyd / International Maxi Association

ARCA SGR "More food, more water, more sun cream, more good jokes to tell!" was the preparation mantra for French sailing ace Gerald Veniard, tactician on Benoît de Froidmont's Wally 60 Wallyño, going into today's start of what most predict will be a slow Rolex Giraglia offshore race, but with the potential to encounter violent localised storms. "Sometimes the race takes 23 hours and sometimes 48 hours. This time it will definitely be 48..."

Appreciating that this year's 69th edition of the Rolex Giraglia offshore race would be ultra-light, the race committee comprising an amalgamation of staff from the Yacht Club Italiano, the Societe Nautique de Saint-Tropez and the International Maxi Association, announced last night that the course would be shortened. Thus the fleet no longer had to head southwest down the coast to the first turning mark at La Fourmigue. This reduced the course distance from 241 miles down to roughly 200. But as Marcel van Triest, navigator on Sir Lindsay Owen-Jones' Wallycento Magic Carpet Cubed observed: "It is not about the distance, but you are using the good wind to go the wrong way."

The maxi fleet was first to get underway from the Golfe de Saint-Tropez at 1200 CEST and so with the new course, they were able point their bows directly towards the Giraglia rock off northeast Corsica. Among the 141 entries, sent off in three starts, were 20 maxis, competing in what is the fifth of seven events in the International Maxi Association's 2021-22 Mediterranean Maxi Offshore Challenge.

Following three days of inshore racing, the fleet had swelled with several maxis arriving just to take part in the offshore. These included the defending Rolex Giraglia line honours winner (and recent outright winner of the 151 Miglia Trofeo Cetilar) Furio Benussi's 100ft ARCA SGR, the 72ft Sam Manuard-designed Black Legend 6, Jean-Pierre Dreau's Mylius 60 Lady First III, Jean-Michel Caye's Vismara 80 Luce Guida, Mylius Yachts President Luciano Gandini on board his highly successful Mylius 80 Twin Soul B and the glorious 33.5m long Herreshoff gaff schooner Mariette of 1905.

The arrival deadline for the Rolex Giraglia is 1000 CEST on Saturday. -- James Boyd / International Maxi Association

Mark Foy Trophy When the 2022 Mark Foy Trophy international 18 footer skiff regatta is contested on Lake Garda, Italy from July 18-20, it will become the 14th regatta of the championship series to honour the name of the man who was the 'father' of the class on Sydney Harbour back in 1892.

Mark Foy is regarded as one of the most significant historical figures in Australian sailing history. An innovator and visionary who wanted to take sailing to a national and international level, Foy was the first Australian entrant in an international sailing competition when he took his 22ft boat, 'Irex', to England in 1898.

Six years before his historic journey to England, Foy staged an incredible spectator-driven regatta on Sydney Harbour in January 1892 with colourful, fast boats, handicapped to produce exciting finishes, in front of thousands of spectators gathered on his island 'grandstand'.

With 18 footers racing in New South Wales, Queensland and Western Australia in the early 1900s, Foy introduced a new interstate trophy, the Mark Foy Challenge Cup, at the start of the 1911-12 season.

His original intention was for the trophy to be presented to whoever won five times, but when he realised that this was not going to be possible, he reduced the number of wins to three. The legendary Chris Webb eventually became the winner of the trophy.

The inaugural event was held in Perth in 1912 and, after a thrilling race, Chris Garland's Westana (WA) defeated Nimrod (NSW), by just 5s in front of a crowd estimated at 10,000 spectators. That victory is now recorded as the first official winner of the Australian Championship.

In 2022, Australia is sending a four-boat team to take on the best European teams.

The Australian teams are:

Lazarus Capital Partners: Marcus Ashley-Jones, Angus Williams, Phil Marshall Burrawang-Young Henrys: Simon Nearn, Grant Rollerson, Fang Warren Fisher & Paykel: Jordan Girdis, Elliott Mahar, Charlie Gundy Rag & Famish Hotel: Harry Price, Harry Hall, Josh McKnight

The leading team from Europe is expected to be the German team, led by Heinrich Bayern, which performed so well in the 2022 JJ Giltinan world Championship on Sydney Harbour in March. -- Frank Quealey, Australian 18 Footers League Ltd.

No wind and no racing on day two of Xacobeo Six Metre World Championship
The second day of the Xacobeo Six Metre World Championship at the Real Club Nautico de Sanxenxo proved to be long and frustrating for the sailors and race committee alike. The forecast going into the day indicated dull skies and extremely light airs, but with a possible window of approximately three hours when conditions might permit racing. Determined to be ready for any chance that came, the fleet was afloat on the outer course area in good time for the planned 13:00 start. Over the course of the next five hours zephyrs of breeze came and went from virtually every point of the compass, the fleet transferred to the inner course area and the race committee constantly monitored the situation. But all to no avail and eventually the boats were sent ashore to enjoy paella and live music in the Regatta Village.

In the overall standings therefore Dieter Schoner's Momo continues to lead the Open Division by just two points from Jamie Hilton's Scoundrel, Johan Larson's Rebecca and Philippe Durr and Rainer Müller's Junior, who all count eight points apiece but lie second to fourth respectively on countback. In the Classic Division Pedro Campos' Bribon 500 leads the pack by two points from Louis Heckly's Dix Août, with Ossi Paija's Astree III third and Thomas Kuhmann's Hankø III fourth.

Whilst the fleet is gathered in Sanxenxo the International Six Metre Association took the opportunity to hold its AGM, which this year included the presentation of a brand-new trophy, The Tim Street Perpetual Trophy. Over many years Tim Street has played an important role in helping to ensure that Classic Sixes (boats first certificated before December 1965) are still able to level race with their modern counterparts. Inevitably older wooden boats gradually take up water, eventually making it impossible for them to comply with the class flotation rules without significant loss of sail area, which renders them uncompetitive. To encourage the participation of as many Classic Sixes as possible Tim was part of a team that developed Class Rule Appendix A, through which older qualifying boats are allowed to float lower than their original designed waterline without a detrimental reduction in sail area.

Lack Of Sleep And Stress Accumulating
The leaders of the Vendee Arctique Les Sables d'Olonne IMOCA, the race round Iceland and back to Les Sables d'Olonne, are only just north of Ireland - far less at Iceland - but for the solo skippers who have been struggling to make their desired progress northwards in very light winds, the accumulation of fatigue, stress and lack of sleep is starting to take an early toll on just the third day of racing.

Louis Burton, who set off into the first windy night at warp factor 4 on his highly fancied, black hulled Bureau Vallee, has found the going slow and very frustrating in the successive bands of light airs. His choice to go west which along with a small initial delay behind Charlie Dalin now sees him 100 nautical miles behind second Dalin's placed APIVIA. Charlie Dalin – who now might have a dream downwind routing virtually to the finish line – was making 14kts directly up the chart towards the Arctic while Burton was pointing at America doing four knots, his powerful black Manuard scow hobbled in the second lights airs zone since the start.

Spinnaker start expected for SSE Renewables Round Ireland Race
With northerly winds predicted for the weekend, the start of the SSE Renewables Round Ireland Race on Saturday afternoon (Wicklow, Ireland) is set to be a colourful affair at the beginning of the 705 nautical-mile route.

Normal logistical issues mean the fleet is now expected to field 47 teams as five boats have been withdrawn for various reasons.

Two of the largest entries will be watching the weather situation carefully as George David's 2016 course record on Rambler 88 comes into view. The time to beat is 50 hours 24 minutes and nine seconds meaning a deadline of approximately 3.24pm on Monday 20th June for Green Dragon entered by Enda O'Coineen and Conor Ferguson along with Telefonica Black skippered by Lance Shepherd.

The overall race winner is decided on IRC corrected time.

The forecast of northerly winds into Sunday also lessens the usual chances of retirements from gear and crew issues on the more exposed south coast allowing teams to settle into the routine of life at sea under racing conditions.

After that, the forecast will be favourable as far as the Blasket Islands off the south-west tip of Ireland with the Northerly flow.

However, current predictions suggest a strong Westerly gradient along the West coast by Tuesday giving crews an exciting stage heading North.

After the 2018 edition of the race that saw Niall Dowling take the overall win on 43 footer Baraka GP, the forecast might point to a mid-range high tech boat of similar size as a likely winner in 2022.

11th ACO Musto Skiff World Championships
Around 50 of the world's best single-handed sailors will come to the fjord to crown a new champion. In the second part of Kiel Week, parallel to the Olympic classes, the 11th ACO Musto Skiff World Championships will start - a double home match for Iver Ahlmann. The top favourites, however, come from Great Britain and South Africa.

When the Kiel boat builder and designer Dr. Joachim Harpprecht, alias Schappi, designed a fast planing dinghy for solo artists with trapeze and gennaker at the end of the last millennium following a call for tenders from the World Sailing Federation, the immunobiologist with a PhD had no idea that the Musto Skiff would return to its birthplace a good 22 years later for the World Class Championships. The original prototype of the skiff, which convinced at a sighting in Quiberon, France, in 2000, is still in the Olympic harbour of Kiel-Schilksee today. The Englishman Nigel Musto was so fond of the 4.55-metre-long and 2.35-metre-wide boats with side outriggers (wings) that he made their distribution his personal concern.

Great Britain remained the stronghold of the Musto Skiff, but above all Australia, whose cracks have to refrain from participating with a heavy heart due to the long, unclear pandemic situation and the horrendous container transport costs.

In the absence of defending champion Bruce King, Ahlmann sees the British Jamie Hilton, Dan Vincent and Robbie Wilson as the favourites, along with sailing pro Peter Greenhalgh and South African Andy Tarboton, the international class president. -- Andreas Kling
