Rolex Giraglia
The Gulf of Saint-Tropez once again confirmed its status as a fantastic regatta course, with excellent weather conditions allowing the final session of the Rolex Giraglia 2022 to take place without a hitch. While the maxi yachts competed on windward-leeward routes off the beaches of Pampelonne, the rest of the boats did battle on a 13-mile coastal course. Wind conditions followed the trend of recent days, with an initial easterly breeze of 6 knots increasing over the course of the day, and fairly flat seas.

With the conclusion of the inshore races, all eyes have turned to the weather forecasts for the next 48 hours and for the stretch of the Ligurian Sea that from tomorrow will be the setting for the 69th edition of the Giraglia. The forecasts for the coming days are still hard to read, but for the moment they indicate rather light conditions, with the only certainty being that the 2012 course record of 14 hours, 56 minutes and 16 seconds, seems relatively safe.

Final results from the race course in Pampelonne (maxis) after four races run:
The maxi Jethou, owned by Peter Ogden, dominated in the IRC0 class. (1,1,1,1);
IRC2: Capricorno, owned by Alessandro Del Bono (1,1,1,1);
ORC0: Leaps & Bounds 2, owned by Jean Philippe Blanpain (1,1,1,1).

For the ORC and IRC groups, the results after 3 inshore races are as follows:
IRC 1: Daguet 3 - Ker 46 - Frederic Puzin (12,2,2);
IRC 2: Les Minots de La Nautique - A 35 - Victor Bordes Laridan (2,2,1);
ORC 1: From Now On - Swan 45 - Fernando Chain (4,1,1);
ORC 2: Farfallina 2 - Corsa 915 - Davide Noli (3,1,1).

Rookie Kings For A Day?
As the leaders of the Vendee Arctique Les Sables d'Olonne race start to escape a wide band of very light airs to the SW of Ireland, it is two of the IMOCA rookie skippers on older style non-foiling IMOCA boats who are holding the lead thanks to their position in the east of the fleet. But 100 miles to the west, having emerged into a new, building SW'ly breeze the faster foilers should accelerate and the rookies' days on top might be numbered.

It is blond-haired 31 years old French skipper Benjamin Ferre (Monnoyeur - Duo For A Job) who leads 30 years old Guirec Soudee (Freelance.com) by 11 miles this afternoon. Ferre had a prodigious rise to success in the Mini 6.50 class going from rookie to third place on the 2019 Mini Transat in just two years.

He is presently mentored by Jean Le Cam and races the IMOCA which is widely considered the quickest, best optimised non foiler, the Vendee Globe 2012 winner as Francois Gabart's Macif and Route du Rhum winner as Paul Meilhat's SMA, a veritable wolf in sheep's clothing.

Their gains might be short lived. As their routing choices for their daggerboards, non-foiling boats has kept them east there is now more wind in the west. Charlie Dalin - fourth on this second afternoon of racing - has already wound his APIVIA up to 23 knots in just 18-19 knots of wind and was making rapid progress up the course. He was computed to be 22 miles south of Ferre and sailing eight knots quicker.

Bribon 500 and Momo dominate day one of the Xacobeo 6mR Worlds
A first day of racing at the Xacobeo 6mR Worlds in Sanxenxo; an event which has gathered 40 teams from 15 nationalities to compete in the Ria de Pontevedra. On Tuesday the starting gun sounded for the first two races, which saw first place for Jose Bribon 500 in the Classics division and Dieter Schoen's Swiss team, Momo in the Open, both fighting for the long-awaited world championship title.

As the weather reports had predicted, the first day of the competition was awarded with good wind conditions in the ria, allowing the Race Committee to set up the windward-leeward racing in the area in front of Sanxenxo. The south-easterly wind between 12 and 14 knots enabled completion of both programmed races.

In the classics division, day one saw extremely competitive racing between the leading boats; with only two points separating the first two teams on the leader board.

The Open category had a clear winner of the day with Dieter Schoen's Momo proving quite unstoppable. The Swiss boat, which already proved its potential by sweeping the title of the Rey Juan Carlos El Corte Ingles Master Regatta, opened the competition with a comfortable victory in the first race and a hard fought second place, which makes Schoen's team the first leaders of the world championships.

Countdown is underway to start of Superyacht Cup Palma
The countdown has begun to the start of Superyacht Cup Palma 2022 with the four-day Mallorcan festival of sail all set to get underway in less than a month on June 29.

Europe's longest-running superyacht regatta will lead-off with two races for the awe-inspiring J-Class on the opening day, with Topaz, Ranger and Velsheda - along with the recently entered Svea - providing a magnificent spectacle of timeless racing out on the Bay of Palma.

The whole Superyacht Cup Palma fleet then joins the party for three days of top-flight racing, with the entry list reflecting the dynamic range of superyachts including luxury ocean cruisers, modern classics and high-performance carbon flyers.

An impressive new addition to the list is the 24m Wally yacht Rose (ex-Tango). The Farr design may be the smallest entry in the 2022 fleet, but none of her competitors will be underestimating her potential when racing begins.

Superyacht Cup Palma 2022 will get formally underway with superyacht registration at the Real Club Náutico de Palma on Wednesday 29 June, followed by the captain's briefing in RCNP's Sala Magna and the Welcome Cocktail presented by New Zealand and DYT Yacht Transport on the RCNP terrace.

Argentario Sailing Week Porto Santo Stefano, Tuscany: After a two-year forced break, the magic of the not-to-be missed event for classic and vintage yachts returns to Porto Santo Stefano. The final preparations are underway to celebrate the 21st edition of Argentario Sailing Week organized by the Yacht Club Santo Stefano and by the Municipality of Monte Argentario that will begin on Wednesday 15 June and wrap up on Sunday 19 June 2022.

36 boats from 8 countries have registered, 14 of which are debutantes for the first time. The fleet of Classic Yachts will finally be able to enjoy - once again - 4 days of racing in the pristine waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea with the islands of Giglio, Montecristo and Elba as a stunning backdrop. For lovers of sailing and beauty, this is an unmissable opportunity to admire up close 117 years of sailing history ranging from 1903 with formidable Scud designed by Nathaniel Herreshoff and owned by Patrizio Bertelli, to Golfo Misitco designed by Giovanni Ceccarelli and launched in 2020.

Making their debut in the Vintage class at Argentario Sailing Week Scud owned by Patrizio Bertelli, designed by Herreshoff nel 1903, with legendary Torben Grael calling tactics, Recluta, designed by German Frers in 1944 with the entire Frers family racing on-board, mysterious Sumurun (William Fife William III-1914), and La Spina, the first Italian 12 m S.I. designed by Vincenzo Baglietto in 1929. The yachts making their debut in the Classic class are Artica II of the Marina Militare Italiana (1956-Illingworth & Laurent), Grifone also of the Italian Navy (1963) and Crivizza designed by Alan Buchanan (1966).

In the Swan class, Dream (1976), Outrageous (1979) e Tikka III (1970), all designed by Sparkman & Stevens, are participating in the Tuscan event for the first time.

In the Spirit of Tradition class, Argentario Sailing Week 2022 welcomes Albelimar III, designed by Carlo Sciarrelli (1977), Midva, (Ron Holland - 1982) and Golfo Mistico designed by Giovanni Ceccarelli and owned by Aldo Ferruzzi (2020).

In the Vintage class, Argyll (1948-Sparkman&Stephens), Barbara (1923-Charles Nicholson), Chinook (1916-Herreshoff), Chips (1913- Burgess W. Starling), Comet (1946-Sparkman&Stevens), Hallowe'en (1926-William Fife III), Manitou (1937-Sparkman&Stephens), Marga (1910-Liljiegren), Olympian (1913-Gardner), Rowdy (1916-Herreschoff), Skylark of 1937 (1937-Sparkman&Stevens), Stormy Weather of Cowes (1934-Sparkman & Stephens) and Varuna (1939-Sparkman&Stevens) return to race once again in the Argentario Gulf.

Last but not least, Hanni II (2013-Hoek), Tintagel (1994-Hoek Design) and Toi e Moi (2018 - Dykstra) are back in the Spirit of Tradition class.

For the 2022 edition, the Argentario Sailing Week fleet will be divided into four categories: Vintage (wooden or metal yachts built before 1950), Classics (wooden or metal yachts built before 1976), Spirit of Tradition, and S&S Swan belonging to the S&S Swan Association.

Can ratings be applied during a round-the-world yachting event?
In the majority of sailing events, where different types of boats compete, there is normally a handicap system so as to give every competitor a fighting chance to win. A common system that is used is based on the boat's International Rating Certificate (IRC), where the certified Time Corrector (TCC), the Rating, is applied after the end of the race to the time of each yacht, to work out who has won. There are many other well known rating systems.

Each boat's TCC rating is calculated using a formula. The calculations take into account the measurements of the boat; her length, weight, draft, rig size, sail area, and specific characteristics and features e.g. keel design. The resulting time corrector, the boat's TCC, is her handicap (rating). The higher the TCC figure, the faster the boat's potential speed. IRC TCCs range from 0.750 to 2.000, with the majority of cruiser/racers between 0.900 and 1.100.

Applying this handicap system, after the finish, has the effect that the start of any race is generally far more interesting for spectators and followers than the finish. The starts become a mass of boats jockeying for position to cross the start line in the optimum position and so many times, one sees boats collide, rules and penalties invoked and tempers fraying.

A short but highly entertaining piece of sporting action.

Barring any upsets, the fastest boats will cross the line first and then there is a gentle parade of yachts crossing the finish line, hours if not days apart, but even at this point nobody will know who has won that particular race until the handicap system is applied (except for the line honours prize of course).

For the 2023 Global Solo challenge, we wanted the finish to be more exciting for the followers of the race, for spectators and for the sailors themselves. We have, therefore, adopted a system whereby the handicap is applied at the start of the event, in other words, the slower boats will have a head start. The concept is not new, handicapping exists in many sports. Yacht clubs often organise pursuit rallies with this format, but this has never been attempted during a circumnavigation.

2022 edition of Finn World Masters Magazine is published
Finn World Masters Magazine The 2022 edition of the Finn Masters Magazine has been published, featuring David Terol, from Spain, launching off a wave during the ludicrously finntastic 2021 Finn World Masters at Los Alcázares, on the Mar Menor.

It is just a few weeks away from the 2022 Finn World Masters in Helsinki with more than 130 Finn masters eager with anticipation for the annual landmark event, so this seems a perfect time to release this annual publication highlighting the activities of those old enough to know better.

In an extended interview with Filipe Silva, from Portugal, the 2019 Finn European Masters champion, and runner up in Los Alcázares, he talks about the many opportunities for the class as well as his new Finn Sailing Academy in Vilamoura. -- Robert Deaves

* From Paul Kelly, Ex-Captain, Eleonora:

I love how the PR machine is working overtime already! The main engines were clearly not stopped, no anchors were deployed (I imagine it would be a time consuming process not a 'hit a switch' operation) and no sound signals to warn Eleonora.

A very sad end to a beautiful yacht. Looking forward to reading the report!
