10 days of Racing for the 6 Metre fleet
This weekend the Rey Juan Carlos / El Corte Ingles Master Regatta will celebrate its seventh edition as the prelude to the Xacobeo 6mR Worlds, the 6-Metre class World Championships.

41 teams representing 15 countries will be lining the docks at Nauta Sanxenxo, host to the most important world-class sailing event of 2022 to be held in Spain.

The event is the fourth series of the Copa de España and serves as the special prelude to the Xacobeo 6mR, the 6 Metre World Championships, which is held from 13th to 18th June. Sanxenxo is to host 41 teams from 15 countries, competing in the most important world-class sailing event of the year in Spain.

Pedro Campos, President of the Real Club Nautico de Sanxenxo, was keen to emphasise the important work the club has been undertaking in the last few years, "The great moment is finally here, one that for several years we have been waiting for, and in the next few days we will make Sanxenxo the very centre of world sailing."

"As the crew of "Bribon 500," our great challenge will be to try and revalidate our double world title gained in Canada and Finland."

SSL Gold Cup Qualifying Series
The second round of the SSL Gold Cup Qualifying Series came to an end in Grandson, on lake Neuchatel (Switzerland), with another two teams earning the right to compete at the Final Series in Bahrain in November. Slovenia and Lithuania finished first and second overall, leaving Ecuador in third and the only team in this round not to go ahead in the SSL Gold Cup 2022.

SSL Team Slovenia continued their impressive form from the first two days of racing, sailing precisely and fast to win Race 5. A pending protest for using a forbidden device (cellphone) on board by Captain Vasilij Zbogar briefly caused some anxiety for the Slovenian "Krpani1860", but eventually, the protest was dismissed given the cellphone was used for compass only. With the victory finally confirmed, Slovenia secured their place in Final Series and crowned an outstanding qualifying performance with four wins in 6 races.

In the fight for the final qualifying spot, SSL Team Lithuania had to work hard during Race 5 to keep SSL Team Ecuador at bay to secure a vital second place. As a result, they knew that going into the final race, only a DNF (Do Not Finish), combined with a victory of SSL Team Ecuador, could have threatened their dream of qualification.

"La Tri" of Ecuador did everything they could, taking victory in the final race, but ultimately it was not enough, and Julio Velez's team would not make it to Bahrain. Instead, Lithuania's "Ambers" will accompany Slovenia to SSL Gold Cup 2022 Final Series.

SSL Gold Cup 2022 Qualifying Series Round 4 will take place June 8 - June 12 with two groups:
Group 4 - Chile, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela
Group 5 - Bulgaria, Czech Republic Portugal and Turkey

Swan Sardinia Challenge delivers a spectacular celebration of sailing
Four days of intense racing in the spectacular setting of southeast Sardinia came to a conclusion on Saturday with the final places decided at the Swan Sardinia Challenge.

The Swan Sardinia Challenge was able to celebrate a successful regatta at what was a new venue for the Nations League, with the Marina di Villasimius providing a warm welcome alongside the support provided by the Regione Sardegna, the town of Villasimius and the Marinedi Group.

Marcus Brennecke's well sailed Hatari emerged at the top of the ClubSwan 50 leaderboard, holding off persistent and determined challenges from Louis Balcaen's Balthasar and August Schram on Stella Maris.

Meanwhile a string of five back-to-back race victories in the ClubSwan 36 class helped Richard Thompson's Black Seal secure a well-deserved though tight win ahead of Giangiacomo Serena di Lapigio's G-Spot - who had won the ClubSwan Racing season's opening event in Tuscany in April - and Edoardo and Vanni Pavesio's Fra Martina.

The Swan 45 class was a competitive all Italian affair which saw all three boats competing constantly changing position. Claudio Terrieri's Blue Sky pipped Stefano Masi's Ulika by a single point, with Luca Locatelli's Thetis, which had taken two race wins, only two points adrift.

In the Nations League standings Germany had 28 points, four points clear of Italy thanks to Hatari's endeavours backed up by Sonke Meier-Sawatzki's fifth placed ClubSwan 50 Niramo, with Monaco in third place with 16 points ahead of Belgium and Great Britain - tied on 15 points - in the 11-country table.

Crossover
Daniela Moroz Kitesurfing phenomenon Daniela Moroz is balancing her dreams of an Olympic medal at Paris 2024 with her role as a member of Jimmy Spithill's United States SailGP Team

Sailing an F50 catamaran for the first time is a daunting prospect for even the most experienced of sailors. Terrifyingly high top end speeds, internal organ crushing g-forces during manoeuvres - to say nothing of the ever-present threat of a major wipe out - make simply existing onboard a major challenge.

However, for American kitesurfing phenomenon Daniela Moroz - a member of the United States SailGP Team - dealing with the speed and intensity of the action on the US boat was less of a problem than for most rookie F50 sailors.

Born and raised in San Francisco, California Moroz - now 21 - won her first Formula Kite world championship in 2016 at the age of 15 and has since claimed four more world titles in the high performance foiling class.

It's no real surprise then that she was not phased by the turbo acceleration and blistering pace of the F50. -- Justin Chisholm

Team Europe confirmed as fourth IMOCA entry for The Ocean Race
A new IMOCA team is confirmed to participate in The Ocean Race 2022-23. The campaign sees French offshore sailor Benjamin Dutreux joining forces with Offshore Team Germany Olympian Robert Stanjek, the same combination that raced to victory in the inaugural edition of The Ocean Race Europe last summer. Jens Kuphal and Alice Potiron will provide team management.

The GUYOT environnement - Team Europe IMOCA boat has a successful pedigree under the Hugo Boss banner, finishing in second place in the 2016-17 edition of the Vendée Globe and leading the most recent Route du Rhum fleet all the way to Guadeloupe. More recently, the boat has been equipped with new foils and used as a training vehicle for the 11th Hour Racing Team as it prepared its own project for The Ocean Race.

GUYOT environnement - Team Europe is the fourth IMOCA campaign confirmed to be on the start line in Alicante, Spain on 15 January 2023, along with Charlie Enright's 11th Hour Racing Team, Boris Herrmann's Team Malizia, and Paul Meilhat's Biotherm.

"It's fantastic to see Benjamin and Robert come together to build on what they achieved in The Ocean Race Europe," said Phil Lawrence, Race Director for The Ocean Race. "We now have four competitive IMOCA teams confirmed for the Race and we continue to engage with other IMOCA and VO65 projects who are working to join us in Alicante in January for the start of the Race."

Infiniti52 Tulikettu found and recovered

Infiniti52 Tulikettu The Infiniti52 Tulikettu, which was abandoned and believed to be lost at sea in mid-April, has been found and safely returned to shore.

DSS foiling monohull, Tulikettu was sailing from Cascais, Portugal, back to the team base in Gosport, England across the Bay of Biscay. She was sailing with her foil fully retracted when the hull struck an unidentified floating object on Monday, April 18th.

There was an uncontrolled leak in the boat, the cause of which was unknown. The crew triggered the EPIRB emergency transmitter on Wednesday, April 20, after midnight. The four-person crew worked diligently to stop the inflow of water. Two of the crew were also experienced boatbuilders.

The difficult decision was made to evacuate onto the oil tanker, ensuring the safety of the crew onboard as the logistics company had ordered the tanker to leave the area as soon as possible due to worsening sea state. No one was injured in the accident. The search for Tulikettu was stopped on Saturday, April 30.

A new sighting of the boat was obtained on Monday, May 23rd. The boat was spotted by passing yacht and the crew reached out to the Tulikettu Social Media Channel via private message. When the tip proved to be reliable, the rescue operation was immediately restarted.

Gambling On The 18s
Early days, the ferry following a race off Shark Island. Click on image for photo gallery.

18 skiff The nature of the boats and the men who have sailed them over the past 130 years always made 18 footer racing unique in the sailing/yachting world and one of the unique parts of the sport has been the gambling which has gone hand-in-hand with the sport since Mark Foy's founding day on Sydney Harbour in 1892.

Gambling on the spectator ferries which follow the 18 footers goes back to the early 1900s, and beyond, but it was made illegal in 1906 when the government of the day introduced a 'Gaming and Betting Act'.

Despite the act, bookies on the Sydney Flying Squadron ferries continued to ply-their-trade, even though there were occasional raids by the police.

Many spectators also watched the races from Bradley's Head, which led to the ferry patrons, who had paid to follow the races, calling it Scotchman's Hill because they claimed those followers were too mean to buy a ticket.

There was plenty of gambling action on Bradley's Head with bookmakers mingling among the crowd. Unlike the bookies on the ferries, the Bradley's Head bookies also had plenty of warning if the police were seen by one of the punters.

In the early 1930s, attempts were made by the SFS to have the government legalise betting on the 18s but it fell on deaf ears.

When the NSW 18 Footers League (now known as Australian 18 Footers League) was formed in 1934 and began racing on Sundays in 1935, gambling on the 18s was taken to another level... -- Frank Quealey, c Ltd.
