ARCA SGR scores 151 Miglia-Trofeo Cetilar double
The 13th edition of the 151 Miglia-Trofeo Cetilar, fourth event in the International Maxi Association's 2022 Mediterranean Maxi Offshore Challenge, will be remembered for its unique weather conditions from flat calms to 25+ knots upwind.

Traditionally competitors leave the Livorno start and Marina di Pisa turning mark for a moderate reach across to the Giraglia rock, followed by a night hunting breeze amid calms off Corsica and Elba. However yesterday the 204 boat fleet, including 14 maxis, experienced a light departure from the mainland coast. The breeze only filled in mid-evening when the maxis were most of the way to Giraglia. It then built properly and after passing the famous rock off northeast Corsica, they saw 23-25 knots - the strongest of the race, although short lived. Unfortunately the southeasterly put them on the wind for the long leg past Elba to the southerly turning mark at Formiche di Grosseto.

This was a race that favoured the fastest and it came as little surprise that, at 0845 this morning, Furio Benussi's 100ft ARCA SGR cruised across the Punta Ala finish line to her second consecutive 151 Miglia-Trofeo Cetilar line honours victory. Her elapsed time of 18 hours 40 minutes 45 seconds was well outside the race record of 13 hours, 50 minutes and 43 seconds set by George David's Rambler 88 in 2019 and even outside her own 2021 time of 15 hours 42 minutes. But the news got better for the Trieste-based maxi as those astern slowed and stopped before Formiche di Grosseto and then struggled on the final leg to the finish. This handed ARCA SGR the IRC corrected time prize for the maxi division. -- James Boyd

Top Names In Brewin Dolphin RS Elite Grand Prix Line-Up
Tom Hewitson/Shaken Not Stirred. Photo by Peter Hickson, phipete.smugmug.com. Click on image to enlarge.

Tom Hewitson Cowes, Isle of Wight: Olympic medallist Ossie Stewart, Dragon Edinburgh Cup winner Simon Brien and current RS Elite UK National champion Tom Hewitson are some of the top names in the line-up for the Brewin Dolphin RS Elite International Grand Prix next month. The event, which is being hosted by the Royal Yacht Squadron in Cowes, Isle of Wight, runs from 9th to 12th June.

The fleet of 42 entries from as far afield as Antigua, the United States, and Norway, plus a strong contingent from Ireland, will sail a ten race Grand Prix series, which incorporates both the UK National Championships and an International Invitational regatta, the first wordwide gathering in the history of the class. The brainchild of enthusiast Charlie Egerton-Warburton, the regatta was originally scheduled for 2020, but was postponed due to the pandemic.

New to the class is former International Fourteen sailor Martin Jones, who has acquired the very well prepared boat Candida from Peter Andreae. Martin also has a string of successes in various classes to his name and will certainly be trying to make his presence felt in his new class.

A long-time Island resident and unashamed "Wightophile", Charlie Egerton-Warburton has enlisted the backing of a wide variety of Isle of Wight businesses to support this regatta and show off their products and services to the competitors and interested parties. There is also a strenuous social itinerary based at the Royal Yacht Squadron.

The Class will be raising money over the four days to support local Cowes-based charity, ACF. Founded by former Paralympic gold medallist Andy Cassell, the charity enables people with all types of disability to develop their sailing journey. -- John Roberson

Lauderdale Yacht Club Wins Women's 2v2 Team Race
Newport, Rhode Island, USA: Two teams built in very different ways clashed in the deciding race of the second annual Women's 2v2 Team Race, hosted over the weekend the New York Yacht Club Harbour Court. The team from Lauderdale Yacht Club (Fort Lauderalde, Fla.) was based around a core of young sailors who currently race for Boston College and recently finished second at the inaugural InterCollegiate Women's Team Race Championship. Bristol (R.I.) Yacht Club used a grass-roots approach, cultivating interest and skill with regular Monday night team racing sessions each summer for the past four years. By the slimmest of margins, the kids from Florida won out.

The Women's 2v2 Team Race took place June 4 and 5 out of the New York Yacht Club Harbour Court in Newport, R.I. In 2021, this event joined the Club's fabled trio of coed keelboat team races—the Morgan Cup, the Hinman Masters and the New York Yacht Club Grandmasters. Ten yacht clubs from around the country sent their top team racers to Newport for a weekend of competition and camaraderie. The regatta was sailed on Narragansett Bay utilizing the New York Yacht Club's fleet of 23-foot Sonar sailboats.

Erika Reineke is now two for two in this regatta, having been a part of the winning New York Yacht Club team in 2021. -- Stuart Streuli

About Friday Night...

Vendee Skippers Tens of thousands of partying, passionate Vendee Globe race fans and well-wishers lined Les Sables d'Olonne's Grand Plage, the main sea front promenade, Friday night to honour the heroic 2020-2021 skippers. Emotions and celebrations suppressed by the pandemic for over a year came bursting to the fore and the joyous celebrations carried on late into a beautiful early summer night.

Carried along the seafront on two floats, 28 of the 33 skippers, were greeted by a raucous public as the parade passed nearly two kilometres along the Georges-Clemenceau promenade. It was the perfect way to honour the skippers on the eve of the official opening of the race village of the Vendee Arctic race, the first qualifying race for the Vendee Globe 2024.

The colourful parade of street artists, acrobats and musicians shared the theme of the four elements, earth, water, air and fire.

An impressive fireworks show set off at the entrance to the legendary channel finally closed the evening. And this morning the start village opened its doors. The extensive village is free access and there is the chance to walk Port Olona's famous pontoon and see the 25 IMOCAs on the race dock poised and ready to take next Sunday's start of the 3,500 nautical miles race into the hostile northern latitudes.

The race village is open for three weeks. The Department of the Vendee region stand host an exhibition highlighting the skippers, the race, its course and the area of the Vendee, an epicentre of sailing. There is a giant photographic exhibition of the images of explorer-photographer Florian Ledoux. 'Under the Pole' shares images of scientific expeditions and the equipment used, including its underwater capsule. There is a 200m2 synthetic ice rink, a Virtual Regatta Inshore challenge. The race village is open until June 26th.

Vendee Arctique
The start of this second edition of the Vendee Arctique-Les Sables d'Olonne will be on Sunday June 12 at 1700hrs local time. Then 25 solo sailors will head off on a course which is about 3,500 nautical miles. Whilst the Vendee Globe heads south across the Equator, on this race the solo skippers head northwards towards the Arctic Circle. They will then round to the north of Iceland passing clockwise or anti-clockwise depending on the weather outlook at start time. At the latest, that course decision will be made on the morning of Saturday June 11.

The race is now organized by SAEM Vendee which also organizes New York - Vendee Les Sables d'Olonne which runs in the Spring of 2024 and the Vendee Globe. In truth the Vendee Arctique - Les Sables d'Olonne was born out from the health crisis and was initially run by the IMOCA class. When two key Transatlantic races had to be cancelled in the immediate lead up to the 2020-2021 Vendee Globe because of the health crisis, skippers were in danger of being short of the hard ocean racing miles needed to test and prove the reliability of their boats and test their own preparations.

So the idea was conceived to race into high northern latitudes for the first time for the IMOCA class. The first edition proved to offer a great, close sporting challenge for the skippers and was also universally embraced by race fans and so it has become a key fixture on the IMOCA calendar but run by the SAEM Vendee. And now it is a great addition to the portfolio of summer tourism offerings in the Vendee region.

The Skippers:

Fabrice Amedeo (Nexans - Art & Fenetres)
Romain Attanasio (Fortinet - Best Western)
eric Bellion (COMMEUNSEULHOMME POWERED BY ALTAVIA)
Jeremie Beyou (Charal)
Arnaud Boissieres (LA MIE CALINE)

The Launch of FlyingNikka in Punta Ala

FlyingNikka "I'm extremely happy to officially present the FlyingNikka project in Punta Ala, this is a location I am particularly attached to, especially during such an incredible event as the 151 Miglia", claims Roberto Lacorte, the Ship Owner and helmsman of this new, astonishing racer full foil. Roberto is also the man behind this really challenging project. "

Today marks a milestone for our team, and for the Italian sailing movement as well: I'm really proud and satisfied to say that we are the first team in the world that was able to imagine, design and build this kind of boat. And the best is yet to come. In fact, it is coming, and we are more than ready to make FlyingNikka fly".

Almost 19 meters, with two T-shaped foil arms, FlyingNikka is the evolution of the AC75 used in the last America's Cup and is designed for long offshore sailing regattas.

This is the first racer in the Mini Maxi Category that can sails in a full foil mode, the first example of a new generation of racing boats that aims at winning all the greatest, international classic regattas in real time, as well as "crashing" all distance records of the most important routes.

FlyingNikka has been designed by an amazing team, managed by Mark Mills, and built in just 8 months at the Kink Marine shipyard in Valencia, under the supervision of the Project Manager Miguel Costa. On the 5th of May the boat has touched water for the first technical launch, followed by training tests that confirmed predictions: FlyingNikka performances are unbelievable and will allow the Italian boat to face long offshore crossing by sailing with foils at a speed of more than 40 knots.

How do you qualify for the Global Solo Challenge?
If you think that you have the required expertise and fortitude, you must then ask yourself if you have the organisational skills to plan for such an adventure?

You will need to plan for this challenge financially, and whilst this may be nowhere near the expenditure to take part in races such as the Vendee Globe, there are of course financial considerations.

You will need to ensure the boat is the right one and you have the skill to handle some of the heaviest sea conditions known. You will have to ensure that the boat meets the exacting safety standards set by the event organisers, and plan for alterations and additional equipment for the boat as required. You will have to plan for anything that could go wrong, from a torn sail, to a capsize, to a medical emergency. You will have to plan provisions. You will have to be an expert in weather prediction, navigation, communications, electrical and mechanical engineering.

You need to be a qualified sailor, in accordance with your Country's regulations and you need to be qualified in medical care, personal survival and the use of liferafts. The boat must comply with the GSC regulations.

If you meet all the criteria, you will also be required to sail 2,000 nautical miles in the yacht that you are going to use in the challenge and that distance has to be sailed single-handed and non-stop over an approved course

As one entrant, Italian, Simone Camba said when asked "What do you think will be the biggest challenge?" His succinct reply was "Getting to the starting line..."
