Contributions welcome, send to 10kts Averages In The Trade Winds Plunging downwind in winds from 20-25 knots, with the odd stronger gust to keep the helms' on their toes, has provided high speeds for the leading duos who have all been averaging more than 15 knots, and the second half of the fleet at least 10 knots. Spanish duos Mapfre and Estrella Damm have shown thee virtue of their respective training, experience and optimisation. Olympic medallists Iker Martinez and Xabi Fernandez have been consistently quick, in fifth leading the group of 5, by 13 miles this afternoon but with a very strong westerly position already banked. Their downwind speeds have been regularly excellent over the last 48 hours perhaps underlining some of their cohesion honed as the most successful 49er skiff crew of their generation. And Barcelona based Alex Pella and Pepe Ribes confirmed that their work rate through last night, making four or five gybes to stay at the best possible angles, was part of the reason that Estrella Damm has spent the day in third place and now moved 10 miles clear of their fourth placed rivals, Dominique Wavre (SUI) and Michèle Paret (FRA) on Mirabaud. The leding duo should pass the Cape Verde islands within the between Monday night and Tuesday morning, presenting their next strategic decision: whether to route through the islands or outside to the west. Meantime Alex Thomson, the British skipper of Hugo Boss, has received the medical green light he required to join his IMOCA Open 60. His Barcelona World Race looks set to start in the Cape Verde islands, subject to his team's logistical plan being approved. Hugo Boss is now more than 530 miles behind the leader. The change of crew, replacing substitute co-skipper Wouter Verbraak (NED), will be overseen by Technical Measurer and Scrutineer, David Moreno (ESP), who will attend the changeover and ensure that the swap fully complies with Rider N°12 of the NOR. Logistical planning is under way to have Thomson join his IMOCA Open 60 Hugo Boss in the Cape Verde Islands. Nathan Outteridge (AUS), despite not always having the early lead, escaped unscathed adding 3 wins to his score. On the other course, Peter Burling (NZL) nailed an impressive 3 bullets. ISAF Sailor of the Year Tom Slingsby (AUS) and 2008 Moth World Champion John Harris take the cake for impressive stacks. In the Blue Fleet, John Harris (AUS) led Nathan Outteridge (AUS) and Bora Gulari (USA) around the first windward mark, but Outteridge was able to slip by when Harris, then Gulari took a swim. Brad Funk (USA) and Slingsby kept up for 2nd and 3rd, and despite Gulari's swim, the Americans were able to keep 2 in the top ten with Dalton Bergan in 6th. There was awesome high-speed lead-swapping between Outteridge and Slingsby throughout Race 2, with Outteridge ultimately taking the gun. Harris was deep early on and made an impressive fight back to the leading pack of Funk, Gough and Gulari. Forecast promises a building sea-breeze and after a good feed, the fleet is already busy with tweaks and tunes for a 13:00hr (AEDST) start tomorrow. Top Ten Provisional Results after Day Two 1. The final day's conditions were a complete change from what the sailors have experienced during the competition. Competition was postponed onshore for 1 hour while everyone waited patiently for the wind to fill. Belen Tavella and Franco Greggi are 2011 World Champions followed by Pepe Bettini & Fernando Gwozdz and Francisco Cosentino and Tomas Wagmaister in third, with a complete Argentine sweep. Silver fleet champions remained Spaniards Luis Rodenas Lorda and Juan Martinez Ruiz with Danish girls Lin Christiansen and Stine Quorning in second and Americans Declan Whitmyer and Ian Storck in third. The top youth team was Gael Jaffrezic and Julien Bloyet of France. The top female team was Ida Baad Nielsen and Marie Thusgaard Olsen from Denmark, their third top female title for the 29er World Championships. YJA Pantaenius Young Sailor of the Year Award
Izzy picked up her third Youth National title in April 2010. Izzy won a Silver medal at the European Youth Championships in Sopot, Poland and another at the Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championships in Istanbul, Turkey. Izzy has just successfully defended her class Youth World title in Cyprus becoming Britain's first ever double windsurfing Youth World Champion. The other finalists for the YJA Pantaenius Young Sailor of the Year were Anya Colley. RYA 2010 National Jetsport IJSBA Ski Stock Champion. Six of her World titles and many of her other achievements have been secured in mixed gender competition. Joanna Freeman and Hannah Mitchell. Joanna and Hannah won the RYA Volvo Nationals in Weymouth in April 2010 and placed 4th at the ISAF Youth Worlds in Turkey, narrowly missing out on a 2nd through protest. Lucy MacGregor also presented awards to the RYA Regional Winners: East Midlands: Anya Colley YJA Pantaenius Young Sailor of the Year award was first presented in 1993. Early winners include Dame Ellen MacArthur and Ben Ainslie CBE, who both went on to win the Yachtsman of the Year title. The 2010 YJA Pantaenius Yachtsman of the Year will be announced on Tuesday 11th January, at an awards ceremony to be held at Trinity House, London. Finalists for this prestigious title are Edward Wright, Lucy MacGregor, and Geoff Holt. The award will be presented by Sir Robin Knox-Johnston a previous winner himself. The multi championship winning Barnabas stood in for Smeg's regular skipper Nick Press, who is currently contesting the 12ft Skiffs Interdominion Championship. Smeg took the lead shortly before the end of the first lap and was never headed thereafter to defeat SLAM (Grant Rollerson, Anthony Young, Peter Nicholson) by 50s. Third place went to the newly sponsored Kenwood Rabbitohs (Evan Walker, Jeremy Roberts, Ted Hackney), which finished a further 2m12s back. Nick Press and Brad Yabsley representing Lane Cove 12s, came ashore exhausted but happy with their third win from four races. They are on six points, 13 clear of nearest rival C-Tech (Chris Reid/Ben de Fluiter, NZL), after beating 59 year-old Tim Bartlett, the record-holding winner of six Interdominions and his crew Adam Miller (Frankenskiff) over the line by seven seconds. Third place today went to Michael Spies/Damian Vlotman on Andrew Short Marine from Lane Cove, but not before a challenge from Woollahra Sailing Club's Brett Hobson/Alex Johnson on Garde. The oldest team in the fleet, Jack Winning (62) and Brett Phillips (53) also had a great day, their seventh place overall handing them the handicap win. There was less carnage today as the gusts were fewer and far between in a predominantly easterly breeze that veered east-north-east at times, on a hot and humid day. Early disappointment for five-time Interdominion champion Alex Vallings (NZL), who broke a side stay on Nuplex before the race started, and that was the end of the boat race for he and Cameron McDonald. After returning to the start line yesterday, convinced they were over early, Adam Forbes/Richard Johns on D Unit should have considered that move for today, as they were pinged for being over the start early and having no idea, the Woollahra Sailing Club pair continued to race. Races 5 and 6 of the 10 race 51st Interdominion will be held on Tuesday, starting from 2.30pm, weather dependent. Once six races are completed, a race drop will come into play and is certain to change the results up, with some of the top contenders already scoring DNF's over the last three days. -- Di Pearson Provisional top five after four races: International 14 Australian National Championship Massey who hails from England but has resided in Sydney for several years has formed an impressive team with Sydney for'ard hand Wilsdon and defended the Australian title they first won in Sydney last summer. Massey sailed his modified Bieker 5 hull George 1st with Wilsdon in a near faultless display all series to finish with four firsts and two second placings over a generally light series. So with a second place being their 'drop', the George 1st crew simply tightened their stranglehold on the series with a clear win in the final race today. Massey said George 1st was basically the same boat and set up as used on Sydney Harbour for the worlds but with a slightly stiffer mast. He said they were using a CST Composites HM2 carbon spar and had stiffened it up a bit which appeared to have paid off for what was a generally light series in Adelaide. The I14 fleet seemed to consolidate this year in terms of design innovations. The fleet of 32 boats was mainly made up of Bieker 5 designs, all sported hydrofoiling rudders of various shapes and the sails were predominately a mix of Irwin and Alexander. The States represented included South Australia, Western Australia, Victoria and New South Wales. The series was held in light airs and often high temperatures under blazing sunshine which tested the sailors and the race management but overall the vibe was one full of camaraderie and good spirit, even though the West Australians were perhaps wishing for much fresher winds to show off their renown heavy-air boat handling skills. The next major event on the I14 horizon will be the world championship later this year in Weymouth, UK, and then the 2011/12 Australian championship to be hosted by Perth Dinghy Sailing Club, Perth. -- Neil Patchett PERTH 2011 ISAF SAILING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS NOR PUBLISHED The Perth 2011 ISAF Worlds will take place from 3 to 18 December 2011 on Fremantle Harbour in Western Australia.
