Hempel World Cup Series at the Allianz Regatta
Emma Plasschaert (BEL) shot up the rankings in the ILCA 6 fleet on day three of the Hempel World Cup Series at the Allianz Regatta. Like many of the favourites in the 57-strong women's singlehander dinghy class, the reigning World Champion from Belgium had a tough start to the regatta with two scores in the 20s, but she bounced back today with a 2nd and then a race win.

This puts Plasschaert in third overall, a point behind Vasileia Karachaliou (GRE), but still some distance behind the overall leader, France's Louise Cervera who has read the conditions like no one else. Today Cervera scored 3,2 and sits on just 12 points overall, and even her current discard of 16th is superior to that of her closest rivals.

The other race winner today was Mara Stransky (AUS), although the Australian's wildly varying scores of 1,27 illustrate just how difficult it can be to find a consistent formula for success.

Formula Kites

Annelous Lammerts (NED) might have slipped to 8th in one of today's Formula Kite Women's races but the Dutch rider is able to drop that score as one of her discards. Bullet after bullet puts Lammerts well in the lead, while the battle for second continues between the two Israeli teammates and rivals, Maya Ashkenazi holding a three-point edge over Gal Zukerman. The race that Lammerts didn't win was won by Leonie Meyer of Germany, who manages to balance the demands of being a young mother with a professional kiteboarding campaign. Meyer moves to fifth overall, 5 points back from the multiple freestyle kiteboarding world champion from Spain, Gisela Pulido.

470 Mixed - Yves Mermod & Maja Siegenthaler (SUI) won both of today's races to move up to third overall. Elena Berta & Jacopo Izzo (ITA) continue to lead after consistent scores of 4,3.

49erFX Women - Two different German crews each won a race today, but it was Australia's Laura Harding & Annie Wilmot who sailed a very consistent three races to move into top spot, 4 points ahead of the reigning World Champion Odile van Aanholt & Annette Duetz.

49er Men - Bart Lambriex and Floris van der Werken (NED) won both of today's Gold Fleet races to move to a 16-point lead. Second place is held jointly with teams from France, Ireland and the Netherlands all on 30 points.

Nacra 17 - Joao Siemsen & Marina Arndt (BRA) rise up the rankings to draw level with series leaders Lukas Haberl & Tanja Frank (AUT)

iQFOiL Women - No races completed today, so Lilian de Geus (NED) continues to lead.

iQFOiL Men - No races completed today, so Max Castelein (NED) continues to lead.

The forecast is looking good for Friday, the final day of fleet racing for the boat classes before their Medal Races on Saturday. -- Andy Rice

Giorgio Armani Superyacht Regatta Porto Cervo: The second day of racing at the Giorgio Armani Superyacht Regatta, an event organised by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda with the support of title sponsor Giorgio Armani, was graced with an east-northeasterly breeze of 10 to 14 knots, which allowed the Race Committee to commence the starting procedures on schedule at 12.30 p.m.

The superyachts crossed the starting line located near the Bisce island and set off on a course that would take them to circumnavigate the islands of Caprera and La Maddalena in an anticlockwise direction. Leaving the island of Spargi to starboard and after passing through the channel between Palau and La Maddalena, the competitors reached the Tre Monti shallows in the Saline Gulf. From here they headed to the Monaci islet, rounded it, and made for the finish line located in front of Porto Cervo, for a course covering approximately 30 miles in total.

The Multihulls started on a reach, while the Superyachts sailed to an offset mark before sailing around the perimeter of the archipelago. After an individual staggered start with 3 minutes between each boat, the superyachts reached the blowiest part of the course in a compact group. Competitors found up to 15 knots to the north of the La Maddalena island, after having sailed along one of the most beautiful stretches of the Sardinian coastline.

Taking centre stage today were the schooner Mariette of 1915 and the Wally 95 Magic Blue, owned by Antonio Cacace, and with Francesco De Angelis calling tactics, which placed second in corrected time. Mariette put in an excellent performance, winning today's race with a very comfortable margin, unlike the rest of the fleet, where the deltas in compensated time were much slimmer.

Third place went to the 108' Win Win, just 7 seconds ahead of Magic Carpet Cubed - who maintains, however, the overall lead in the provisional classification for the Superyacht Division. In the Multihull race Allegra, with Australia's Paul Larsen on tactics, took first place ahead of Highland Fling 17.

Racing continues tomorrow with the start scheduled for 12.30. Light winds are forecasts with stronger breezes possible locally.

Conwy Fife One Design In 1926 Messrs. W. and R. B. Fife of Fairlie were asked to draw up plans for a new class suitable for the waters of the Conway estuary and the Menai Strait. The waterline length to be limited to 16ft. and the maximum draught to 3ft.3ins. This was done; the length overall being 24ft.4ins., with a beam of 6ft.6ins. and an 18cwt. lead keel. 15 wood yachts were built by Messrs. A.M. Dickie & Sons of Bangor, and all but one are still in existence today. In 1933 the cost was £275 complete which included a £5 royalty to William Fife. 22 G.R.P. Fifes have been added to the fleet.

'A' Series Race 6 at Royal Anglesey Yacht Club

With a decent NW breeze and a Penmon bound tide, the programmed trip to Ten Feet Bank looked doubtful and after due consideration and a consultation with the great and the good, Race Officer Nick decided on an 'X' course of B6, B7, B8 and B12. With a fleet of 14 Fifes and 5 MSOD'S milling about before the start, it must have been an impressive sight from the Green for the tourists.

In the Menai Strait One Design Class fleet, 16 (Steve) managed to hold off a charging 4 (Ray) with 6 (John) taking the final podium place. Sadly Stephen Watson-Jones was unable to make it 10 straight wins. -- Mike Hardie

11th Hour Racing Team sets sails for Newport, Rhode Island
Professional offshore sailing outfit, 11th Hour Racing Team, has set off for its first major ocean crossing in its new IMOCA race boat - Malama. The 60-foot yacht, which is scheduled to enter The Ocean Race 2022-23 left Concarneau, left France on Friday bound for its home base in Newport, Rhode Island.

Onboard Malama is skipper Charlie Enright (USA), joined by newcomer to the team Francesca Clapcich (ITA), along with Simon Fisher (GBR), Justine Mettraux (SUI), and media crew member Amory Ross (USA).

IMOCAs are traditionally designed for short-handed sailing - with one or two sailors onboard. The team has spent the past two months training onboard Malama with five crew, as they build up to the start of the round the world race in January 2023.

The Team will be based in Newport for two months, the home of title sponsor, 11th Hour Racing, supporting a range of activities, and sharing their experiences on ocean health and sustainable boat building practices with the local community.

The Team also announced today that it will be racing, for the first time, in the Newport Bermuda Race, a 635-nautical mile (1,022km or 730mile) dash from Rhode Island down to the North Atlantic island.

This year's edition, which starts on June 17, will be Enright's fourth entry, having previously competed in 2008, 2010 when he won the Open Division with the 90 footer, Genuine Risk, and then again in 2012.

The Magenta Project to work with Cowes Week to promote women in sailing
Cowes Week, 196 years young and one of the world's most famous regattas, is delighted to announce that it is joining with the Magenta Project to promote women in sailing, and to highlight the important impact that women already have in the world's biggest keelboat regatta.

Cowes Week, has for a long time, had a date set aside for the recognition of women sailing within the regatta. Working with The Magenta Project, both organisations will look to bring a greater awareness to the roles women play in our sport generally, and inspire more young women to take up sailing, whatever their ambitions.

The Magenta Project will be at Cowes Week throughout the week and will have a dedicated Hub for sailors to find out more about the opportunities for women in sailing, Women's Day will take place on Tuesday 2nd August with a prize giving, which will be followed by a presentation and a Q&A session with leading sailors from both Cowes Week and The Magenta Project.

It's not often that sailing intersects with serious social politics. Addressing issues of gender equity and systematic privilege is no doubt an on going task, but this sad but beautifully formed little documentary by Katie Bernstein and Clara Mokri highlights a different problem. It's made for the New Yorker.

Few people would argue against having practical laws to allow our community to function well, but when those laws are enforced without compassion or nuance, then it reflects badly on our society as a whole. I don't really know what the answer is here, but what I do know is that we shouldn't be dismissing this as an "American" issue. With acute problems of housing affordability, spiralling inflation, and murmurs of recession it's not beyond the realms of possibility, that this story repeats on Pittwater, Hobsons Bay or Middle Harbour in the near future.

Women's 2v2 Team Race
2v2 Team It's not quite LeBron James rolling back into Cleveland wearing a Miami Heat uniform. But this weekend, there are likely to be a few New York Yacht Club members wishing Olympic contender Erika Reineke were again competing for the host club in the New York Yacht Club Women's 2v2 Team Race, instead of one of the visiting teams.

A year ago, Reineke teamed with fellow skipper Emily Maxwell - and their respective crews - to lift the New York Yacht Club to a convincing victory in the inaugural edition of the women's-only regatta, which is run out of the New York Yacht Club Harbour Court. This year, Reineke will race for her hometown Lauderdale Yacht Club.

The Women's 2v2 Team Race will take place June 4 and 5 out of the New York Yacht Club Harbour Court. In 2021, this event joined the Club's fabled trio of coed keelboat team races - the Morgan Cup, the Hinman Masters and the New York Yacht Club Grandmasters. The response was overwhelming, with more teams applying than spots available. This coming weekend, 10 clubs from around the country will send their top team racers to Newport for a weekend of competition and camaraderie. The regatta will be sailed on Narragansett Bay utilizing the New York Yacht Club's fleet of 23-foot Sonar sailboats.

Racing for the New York Yacht Club Women's 2v2 Team Race will start Saturday morning and run through Sunday afternoon on the waters between Rose and Goat islands.

Teams entered in the second annual New York Yacht Club Women's 2v2 Team Race include: American Yacht Club, Rye, N.Y,; Bristol (R.I.) Yacht Club; College of Charleston (S.C.) Yacht Club; Corinthian Yacht Club, Marblehead, Mass.; Eastern Yacht Club, Marblehead, Mass.; Larchmont (N.Y.) Yacht Club; Lauderdale Yacht Club, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; New York (N.Y.) Yacht Club; Southern Yacht Club, New Orleans; The San Francisco Yacht Club, Tiburon, Calif.

Finn Southern Area Championships
Mengeham Rythe Sailing Club hosted the 2022 Finn Southern Area Championships over the weekend of 28th and 29th May 2022. A great entry of 25 sailors travelled from across the country.

Saturday

In order to make the best use of the tide, there was an early briefing and the boats launched soon after 9am. The sun was shining, the harbour looked stunning and a decent north easterly blew the fleet out through Chichester Harbour to Hayling Bay.

Sunday The sailors gathered again very early to be on the water for 9am. Some had clearly used the Saturday afternoon and evening "rehydrating" in true Finn fashion!

The fleet sailed out to Hayling Bay in the sun and with a moderate North Easterly breeze. The same course configuration was swiftly set up so the start sequence could begin on time in order to get 3 or 4 races in. -- Richard Sharp

Top five final results:

1- Lawrence Crispin (Stone Sc)
2- John Heyes (MRSC)
3- Richard Sharp (MRSC)
4- Kristian Sjoberg (Thorpe Bay YC)
5- Mike de Courcy (MRSC)

The prize-giving was carried out in the sun on the club balcony and the fleet departed after a lovely weekend's sailing. Lawrence thanks the Mengeham Rythe club for the excellent race organisation and hospitality.
