Hempel World Cup Series at the Allianz Regatta
Marie Barrue (FRA) won the opening race of the ILCA 6 competition on day one of the Hempel World Cup Series at the Allianz Regatta, taking place in The Netherlands.

Barrue was outright winner of last year's Allianz Regatta further north in Medemblik. Today marked the first day of competition in the more confined waters of Almere, not far from the capital of Amsterdam. The change of venue didn't seem to throw the French sailor off her stride, however, as she battled her way to a race win ahead of her teammate Louise Cervera (FRA) in second, and Carolina Albano (ITA) in third.

After dominating the first Hempel World Cup Series in Palma two months ago, the Trofeo Princesa Sofíia, Canada's Sarah Douglas is seen as one of the favourites in the ILCA 6 fleet. She finished a very respectable fourth place in tricky, light airs today.

The 40 boats in the Men's 49er skiff are divided into two qualifying groups - Blue and Yellow - and today they raced on different courses. The Belgian team Arthur De Jonghe and Jan Heuninck won the Blue Group race ahead of Australians Jack Ferguson and Max Paul. Home favourites and reigning World Champions from the Netherlands, Bart Lambriex and Floris van der Werken, made a mess of their first race in the Yellow Group when they sailed into a big patch of weed and almost stopped.

Fortunately for them the race was abandoned due to a big wind shift and the Dutch earned a reprieve.

The tricky breeze meant no racing in the 49erFX, Nacra 17 or 470 Mixed fleets today, so the hope is for better conditions on Wednesday.

Wednesday is also the opening day for the fast new foilers in the Olympic sailing line-up due to compete further north out of Lelystad, the iQFOiL windsurfers and the Formula Kite competitors. -- Andy Rice for World Sailing.

Pro Sailing Tour In Cowes
The Pro Sailing Tour is coming to Cowes. The home of yacht racing on the Isle of Wight will host the event for the first time in a little over a month, bringing high speed multihull racing to the heart of the Solent for a two-day rendezvous on 5-6 July.

The Pro Sailing Tour brings together 8 talented Ocean Fifty skippers racing foiling trimarans that are as long as they are wide (15.24m x 15m respectively), as agile as they are spectacular, and that can reach speeds of up to 42 knots (77km/h) on both inshore and offshore racecourses.

Brit Sam Goodchild, onboard Leyton, is the current defending champion, a position that is being hotly contested by his French rivals during the two-month competition that started in May in Bonifacio, Corsica, (Episode 1). The PST will visit Brest (Episode 2) and the Bay of Saint Brieuc (Episode 3) in France before racing to Cowes next month for the finish of Episode 3 on the 5 July and the start of the Episode 4 finale on 6 July.

Pro Sailing Tour organisers met with Cowes stopover representatives from the Royal London Yacht Club and Cowes Harbour Commission on Monday to finalise plans ahead of the arrival of the fleet. RLYC Commodore Martin Thomas gave Pro Sailing Tour CEO Julien Mauriat and members of the PST organising team a tour of the RLYC during the visit, showcasing some of the world class facilities of the 140-year-old club that will host the multinational fleet during its stay in Cowes. "For nearly 200 years, Cowes has been the centre of British yachting and is ready to receive this prestigious event. The Royal London Yacht Club, established in 1838, is delighted to host the Ocean Fifty sailors in The Solent," he said.

100th Anniversary of the Star Class World Championship
Bacardi will support the International Star Class Yacht Racing Association as the presenting sponsor of the 2022 Star World Championship, 8-17 September 2022.

The 2022 Star World Championship will celebrate 100 years of history since the first World Championship was held in 1922. This milestone event will be held in Marblehead, Massachusetts on the eastern seaboard of the United States.

Remaining true to the heritage of the Star Class since 1922, the World's will be contested over six days with one long daily race, bringing together the world's best alongside emerging talent in a battle of endurance, fitness, strategy and competition. The single race format is also reflected at the iconic Bacardi Cup, partner of the Star Class since 1927 - representing one of the longest standing alliances in sporting history.

Honoring this lasting relationship, as presenting sponsor for the 100th Anniversary Star World Championship Bacardi will host an open bar every night and hospitality for the 100th Anniversary Gala Dinner on Wednesday, September 14.

Staking a place on the Star World Championship leader board remains as competitive as ever and the challenge for victory is as tough as the first edition back in 1922. The 2022 Star World Championship will take place at the Eastern Yacht Club in Marblehead from September 8th to 17th.

Giorgio Armani Superyacht Regatta
Porto Cervo, Italy:The Giorgio Armani Superyacht Regatta gets underway today, an event organised by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda with the support of new title sponsor Giorgio Armani. Racing will run through Saturday, 4th June.

The 15th edition of the event officially opens the YCCS sporting calendar, as well as the Mediterranean superyacht sailing season. Eighteen boats are enrolled, ready to sail in and around the islands of the La Maddalena archipelago.

As a preview to what is set to be a wonderful week of sailing in Sardinia, the two classic schooners, Mariette of 1915 and Shenandoah of Sark put on a splendid show on the water today when they engaged in a friendly sail in company between Capo Ferro, and the Monaci islet before continuing past the Isola delle Bisce.

The WallyCento Magic Carpet Cubed returns after her last visit in 2019, where she claimed her third consecutive victory. In addition to Mariette of 1915, participants in the Giorgio Armani Superyacht Regatta include the 33-metre yachts Inoui and Win-Win, the Wally 94' Magic Blue, the 32-metre sloop Ribelle, and the Southern Wind Morgana, built in 2020 and competing in the event for the first time. A new entry to the regatta will be the Wally 93' Bullitt, one of the brand's most recent launches, which debuted at the PalmaVela in May. The Spirit Yachts 111 Geist will also take part, a vessel that was named Sailing Yacht of the Year at the World Superyacht Awards in Monaco in 2021, two years on from her launch.

In the Multihull category, the Gunboat 68 Highland Fling 17, winner of the most recent edition of the Superyacht Regatta, will do battle with Allegra, a catamaran designed by Nigel Irens and Nauta Yacht Design.

Once again, the Southern Wind Rendezvous and Trophy will take place within the event, gathering together boats from the shipyard to sail in company in the waters of northern Sardinia. Five yachts are enrolled in this category: the SW 82s Ammonite and Feelin' Good, the SW 100 Cape Arrow, the SW 102 EgiWave and the SW 96 Sorceress.

The first starting signal is scheduled for Wednesday, 1st June, at 12:30 p.m. The forecast gives variable winds of 5 to 8 knots.

The French yacht is almost 50 years old and was famously sailed by the late Eric Tabarly, the legendary French ocean racing sailor whose daughter Marie will skipper the entry in the 705 nautical miles race around Ireland.

Two other additions to the fleet include Jackknife skippered by Andrew Hall, a regular offshore sailor and race veteran who won last weekend's Irish Sea Offshore Racing Association (ISORA) race from Dun Laoghaire to Holyhead.

The latest update to the entry list also includes one of the smallest boats expected on the starting-line Ian Morton's Pogo 30 Bijou as the 52 boat.

World Sailing Council Makes LA28 Commitment
The World Sailing Council and World Sailing Board met in person for the first time in over two years at the Mid-Year Meeting held in Abu Dhabi, bringing together representatives from across the global sailing community, hosted by the Abu Dhabi Sports Council.

Across four days, the Events Committee, Equipment Committee and the Board met to discuss the future development and growth of the sport, culminating in the World Sailing Council meeting on Sunday, 29 May.

The global pandemic meant this was the first in-person meeting since 2019. And, with the goal of providing certainty and stability for sailors, Member National Authorities (MNAs) and Classes over the next six years, Council approved retaining the current slate of Olympic Sailing events for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, subject to approval by the International Olympic Committee.

Council also approved measures to address the cost and quality of the Nacra 17 Class equipment following concerns over the expense incurred by MNAs in competing in the event, and recognised the potential of Wingfoiling for inclusion in future Olympic programmes. The opportunities presented by Wingfoiling were also discussed in detail by the World Sailing Board.

The L30 Class and International Techno Wind Foil 130 Class Association both received World Sailing Class status.

The President's Award was made to Andrea Camin, President of the Fraglia Vela Riva Yacht Club in recognition of the success of the Lake Garda Optimist Class Regatta. The Lake Garda Optimist Class Regatta has been providing opportunities for young sailors to race each other since 1982. The event is still going strong with the 40th edition of the race welcoming over 1,000 sailors from 34 nations.

The Beppe Croce Award for services to sailing was made to John Doerr in recognition for his decades of contribution to the sport. John Doerr has been involved in sailing since 1964, when he started competing as a schoolboy before becoming Wayfarer world champion in 1974. As an International Judge, Umpire and Jury Member, he has officiated at the highest level including Olympic Games, America's Cups, World Championships, World Cups and Paralympic Games since 1988, and served as a member of several World Sailing Committees throughout his illustrious career.

The Last Word
For whatever reason, I didn't succumb to the stereotype that science wasn't for girls. I got encouragement from my parents. I never ran into a teacher or a counselor who told me that science was for boys. A lot of my friends did. -- Sally Ride
