Quantum Racing Wins Super Series Baiona
American owner-driver Doug DeVos steered Quantum Racing to overall victory at the ABANCA 52 Super Series Baiona Sailing Week lifting the first regatta title of the five which comprise the tenth anniversary season of the world's leading grand prix monohull circuit.

Four times overall champions since the circuit started in Barcelona in May 2012 Quantum Racing managed to impose themselves as the circuit visited the rugged Atlantic coast of Galicia on the north west corner of Spain, responding best to the challenges and demands of a completely new, dynamic race course area.

The picturesque Ría de Vigo served up a welcome variety of wind conditions, from seven to 24 knots over the eight races which were contested. The first four days were sailed in northerly winds but today's showdown finale for the first time encountered a demanding SW'ly sea breeze.

The next event of the 52 Super Series 2022 will be held out of the Portuguese town of Cascais. From 20 to 25 June, the Rolex TP52 World Championship Cascais 2022 will see the 2022 TP52 World title at stake. Takashi Okura's Sled will defend the crown won last November in Mallorca.

75th Block Island Race
Commodore Ed Cesare said during the virtual weather briefing the night before racing: "Welcome to the third annual 75th Block Island Race, here's hoping third time's a charm." Storm Trysail Club finally was able to run their May distance race in classic spring conditions.

77 boats started the race on Friday afternoon off Stamford, Conn., with most of the fleet opting for the 186nm Block Island Course, while 2 classes sailed the shorter 136nm Plum Island course. Divided among ORC and PHRF classes, the teams were treated to a strong southerly gradient making the racetrack a reach down Long Island Sound and around Block Island and back. Some teams reported isolated 50+ knot squalls complete with hail. By Saturday morning, most of the teams were making their way back into a foggy Sound in a light westerly beating to the finish line.

Ultimately, it was Wizard, Fred Detweiler & Bruce Aikens' R/P 69 who took line honors and the Governors Race West Trophy at 10:39 with a time of 19 hours 14 minutes and 27 seconds (still 8 hours shy of the course record set in 2015 by 100-ft Comanche.) It was a very slow last few 15 miles taking nearly 4 hours to complete and the faster boats all compressing for a light beat to the finish.

Once the rest of the fleet finished and the ratings were applied, it was Rear Commodore Andrew Weiss' new Italia 11.98, Christopher Dragon, who took home the top ORC award, the William Tripp, Jr. Memorial Trophy for best corrected time.

In the PHRF fleet, the Bill and Jackie Baxter's J/111 Fireball has both the best elapsed and corrected times taking the Terrapin and Governors East Trophy respectively.

Launched - Flying Nikka - OnCourse Episode 19
Ten months ago a bundle of smart looking renderings set the scene for a wild and ambitious concept - Today it's the real deal, afloat and flying. And in putting theory into practice this Mark Mills designed keelboat foiler has triggered an important question, is this the start of offshore foiling?

To find out we take a close look at Flying Nikka's first sailing trials and talk to Mark Mills about how the first few days went and what the future holds.

We also take a look at the opening event in Bermuda for Sail GP Season 3 and ask among other things, why the big guns aren't performing.

Champagne Sailing at Cowes Spring Classics 2022
The fifth edition of Cowes Spring Classics held over the weekend of 20-22 May, was back to its traditional date after two years of calendar hopping and was judged a great success by the competitors taking part.

The Regatta, based at Shepards Marina in Cowes, started with the Mermaid Gin Welcome Drinks and Crew BBQ on Friday evening followed by two days of racing. Racing conditions were perfect, despite a forecast of low winds and the classic yacht crews in Bermudan and Gaff Rigged classes, enjoyed four races over the two days in glorious Solent sunshine, sailing on a variety of courses expertly set by the Cowes Corinthian Yacht Club Race Team.

The Saturday night dinner in the Sugar Store was enjoyed by nearly 100 owners and crew, many of whom dressed to suit the age of their yacht.

The overall winner of the regatta was Whooper, Giovanni Belgrano's 1939 Laurent Giles sloop, a popular result with four class wins. Whooper was also the winner of the first Cowes Spring Classics in 2018.

Full results are available on the website. 2023 dates will be announced soon.

Emirates Team New Zealand set to sail in Australia on next stage of record hunt
For the past 35 years, Emirates Team New Zealand has been synonymous with competing on the water in boats which are at the leading edge of professional sailing and technology.

But in a few weeks, the current America's Cup champion's next challenge will be ashore, and conducted in Australia, chasing a wind-powered land speed record that has been broken only once in 23 years.

"I tried every year for 10 years - all day, every day to break this record," current record holder Richard Jenkins (UK) said in 2009, after adding just 10mph to the previous world land-speed record for a wind-powered vehicle. "It is an incredibly difficult record to break. In any other record, more power means more speed. Here more wind doesn't mean more speed. Everything has to be technically spot-on."

Jenkins moved into what was initially the "Windjet" project after leaving school and worked as a boatbuilder for Green Marine before moving on to complete a degree in mechanical engineering at the Imperial College, London. Over that decade, Jenkins working mostly alone and living in a van at the venue chosen for the next record attempt. The breakthrough came in 2008 when he refined the wingsail and tailplane concept. During that decade Jenkins designed and constructed five different wind-powered craft, drawing heavily on F1 technology. His latest design, and the current record holder appears to be a very close cousin to that being used by Emirates Team New Zealand. Both use carbon composite wings, controlled by a vertical tailplane and aileron.

Team New Zealand freely admit that besting Jenkin's mark will not be easy, and while the four-time America's Cup champions have a public expectation of being able to deliver excellence with ease, Jenkins' comment that "everything has to be technically spot-on," sums up the degree of difficulty and dedication in setting a new mark, which has only been broken once in 22 years. -- Richard Gladwell
