ILCA World Championships
Vallarta, Mexico: The final day at the ILCA 7 Men's World Championship in Riviera Nayarit, Mexico.

The first race of the day brought a little drama when the event leader Jean-Baptiste Bernaz (FRA) got a Black flag, and Pavlos Kontides (CYP) finished fifth, which lifted him to a second overall place, with just 12 points behind Jean-Baptiste. By finishing 14th place, Thomas Saunders (NZL) fell to third position, only 5 points ahead of Tonci Stipanovic (CRO).

According to the Notice of Race the last possible Warning signal at 1500 made it impossible to race committee to give to the Silver fleet a second race, so they finished the championship with 11 races sailed total.

However, the Gold fleet still managed to get their last race started in time and Michael Beckett (GBR) made his best race during the regatta by winning that race. Filip Jurisic (CRO) finished second, which moved him up to the 3rd overall position; Joel Rodriquez Perez (ESP) finished third.

Jean-Baptiste Bernaz (FRA) by finishing 7th in last race secured his position he held almost the whole regatta and became the new ILCA 7 World Champion.

For the first time, the ILCA 7 Men's World Champion title goes to France!

Swiss America's Cup challenger demolishes GC32 Riva Cup competition
Technically helmsman Arnaud Psarofaghis and his crew on Alinghi Red Bull Racing - SUI 8 won the GC32 Riva Cup with two races spare. In reality, given the 24 point advantage they had earned prior to today, the GC32 Racing Tour's defending champions could have stayed in bed today and still won by five points. Of the 16 races they sailed since Thursday they won half. They finished off the podium just once. They were a class apart.

The Swiss team seemed to go the right way, were fast and never broke. One theory is that now they are challenging for the America's Cup they are elevating their game still further. Even in today's first race when they were OCS they still recovered to second.

Today's conditions were unusual. Following overnight rain storms, Lake Garda was overcast and threatening but this caused the northerly Pèler to remain blowing, at 10 knots when racing got underway at midday, then building into the high teens by close of play.

The GC32 Racing Tour now moves on to the first of two events in Lagos, Portugal, the first over 22-26 June followed by the GC32 World Championship over 13-17 July.

Riva Cup results:
1. Alinghi Red Bull Racing - SUI, 42 points
2. Team Rockwool Racing, 63
3. Black Star Sailing Team, 68
4. Alinghi Red Bull Racing - SUI, 74

Magnifique - Grand Soleil
Magnifique - Grand Soleil And with their new flagship Grand Soleil 72 Cantiere del Pardo have truly excelled themselves...

Grand Soleil has a new flagship. Or arguably two, because the Performance and Long Cruise versions of the Grand Soleil 72 have distinctly different decks. It's a significant move by Cantiere del Pardo, scaling up to maxi yacht production. This isn't their first foray into that market (witness the GS 80) but rather than being a full custom project, the GS 72 is designed and engineered for series production.

The concept took shape in discussions between the shipyard and Nauta Design. 'It started with the idea, shared between us, to realise a top-of-the-range project,' Nauta's co-founder Massimo Gino recalls. 'A beautiful, fast, modern sailing yacht with excellent performance, yet comfortable and elegant, a boat that is all-Italian and that exudes in every detail the luxury that distinguishes Italian design, offering a high-level lifestyle to its owners and guests, in the tradition of Grand Soleil.'

Kites and Nacra 17 dodge a bullet to get confirmation for 2028 Olympics
World Sailing's Mid Year Council Meeting has just concluded in Dubai. The main business on the final day was confirmation of the Olympic Equipment and Events for the Los Angeles Olympic Regatta in 2028.

The Council had to vote on two submissions - one from the Events Committee M03-22 and the other via the Equipment Committee M05-22. The latter was developed by two of the incumbent class associations - the International Kite Association and the Int 470 Association - and unsurprisingly recommended that their Equipment and Events be retained for the 2028 Olympics.

The Submission from the Events Committee noted that it was "A submission from the Chairman of the Events Committee and the Equipment Committee."

But sticking with its long standing practice, World Sailing Council refused to accept the recommendations of its expert Events Committee, and went off in another direction entirely. The frustration with the inevitable outcome was apparent in the voice of Events Committee Chair John Derbyshire (GBR), as he spoke to the joint Equipment and Events Committee submission.

As for the Mixed Multihull and Nacra 17, the 470/IKA submission skipped over the serious issues of cost and lack of international growth raised yet again on the floor of the World Body meeting, and the bottom line was a vote for the status quo.

The choice made shores up the position of the Kite and 470 Events for Paris 2024, but has no clear way of resolving the issues of cost of the Nacra 17 Mixed Multihull which was claimed to have doubled in price since its inclusion in the 2016 Olympic Regatta. -- Richard Gladwell

Anna Luschan Takes the Melges 24 Austrian Title
Litzlberg / Seewalchen, Austria: Segelclub Kammersee (SCK) in Litzlberg/Seewalchen on Attersee hosted the third event of the Melges 24 European Sailing Series on May 26-29. In tricky conditions it was Anna Luschan and her team of Michael Luschan, Jakob Bonomo, Toni Eigenstuhler and Lisa-Marie Bonomo bringing home the Austrian Champion title in Melges 24 class.

For the second time in a row the Melges 24 Austrian title was awarded to Anna Luschan and her team. The next appointment for Melges 24 class will be on Garda lake in July, where Fraglia Vela Riva will host the fourth event of the Melges 24 European Sailing Series on July 22-24.

RS Aero Paignton, Devon: Day 2 of the 2022 RS Aero UK at Paignton brought more wind for the 101 RS Aeros. Winds mainly ranged from or 7-10kn with a 25kn squall thrown in! Three races were possible for each of the four fleets helping keep to schedule.

Consistency continues to be key in the closely racing of the RS Aero 9s. Steve Norbury (Warsash) now has a 5 point lead with an impressive 2,2,2,2,1,6 from Peter Barton (Lymington Town) and Ben Rolfe (Burghfield) who are both several points behind and already looking forward to the second discard! The RS Aero 9s had an exciting first race as a rain squall suddenly increased the breeze to 25kn on the run as they blasted downwind through the steep rolling waves to test a few sailor's balance!

The RS Aero 7s have the largest fleet with 44 entries and it was another testing day for getting off the start line cleanly without being called over by the eagle eyes of the Race Team. Noah Rees (Torpoint Mosquito) and Jack Miller (Felpham SC/Paignton) share the lead with Jack Lewis (RYA) a few point back.

RS Aero 6s belonged to Ellie Craig (Draycote) today with a clean sweep 1,1,1 to take the lead by just a point from Sam Mettam (Papercourt) in the inaugural 8 boat fleet after the first RS Aero 6 rigs started being dispatched this month. Zak Mitchell (Paignton) scored a 3rd in race 3.

In the RS Aero 5s Axel Almersson (Jollekappseglarna Vasteras, SWE) of Sweden held his lead, but by just a point, from Jonathan Bailey (Hunts). Chloe George (Lymington Town) is just two points further back. The big mover of the day was local sailor Mark Ripley (Paington) who banged in a 1,4,5 to jump to 4th. -- Peter Barton
