Phoenix Lead But Dream 52 Super Series Start in Baiona For Amateur Vayu Team

If the Plattner family's Phoenix team, with man of the moment Tom Slingsby calling tactics, issued a clear statement of intent when they unrolled a truly comprehensive victory in the first race of the 2022 52 Super Series season, and with a 1.3 for the day lead the Abanca 52 Super Series Baiona Sailing Week by the slimmest of margins, there was also a sharp reminder that the world's leading grand prix monohull circuit is not all about stars of Sail GP, America's Cup, Olympic and The Ocean Race when Thailand's amateur, family Vayu crew pieced together two assured second places today to earn a share of the overall lead.

They were the title challengers whose momentum was rudely halted by an exploding spinnaker on the last racing day in Palma last November and today Phoenix looked sharp and smooth leading all the way round the first race. With a margin of over 500 metres at the finish line they had visibly extended on each leg of the course.

They were pursued all the way round by Thai brothers Kevin and Tom Whitcraft's Vayu team - which has five family members on board including young Thai 49er Olympic campaigner Don steering - and British Olympic silver medallist Nick Rogers calling tactics. They held off the 2021 circuit champions Sled who took third and then did it again in the second race chasing Platoon through the finish with Phoenix taking third.

Kitefoiling Youth World Championships
The final day of the Kitefoiling Youth World Championships delivered drama and an unforeseen but well-deserved result in the girls' fleet. Light winds made consistent foiling very tough and required the highest level of focus and technical skill from the young riders.

Despite the light winds on the final day, Torregrande on the west coast of Sardinia delivered excellent foiling conditions throughout the competition. The kitefoiling calendar is getting to its busiest period of the season with competitions coming in quick succession, from Amsterdam to Lake Garda in Italy and Lake Traunsee in Austria all taking place in the next month.

Exploit the noise - Doyle Sails
Taking onboard another Olympic gold medallist never hurt anyone's business

Between the conceptual model of a new sail design and its real-life performance is a no-man's land occupied by what Jordi Calafat refers to as noise. Sometimes this separation is wide; other times it is happily much narrower. Either way, it is in negotiating this zone of noise that Calafat finds his greatest satisfaction as a designer.

Ashby's Update
We have just completed a successful week of testing at Whenuapai Air Base.

With the assistance of the RNZDF we have been able to run Horonuku up to nearly maximum load and complete our main structural and component checks. Out of the box Horonuku has worked extremely well and is a credit to all those involved. We have sailed in 15 - 30 knots and have been in excess of 140kmph!

The weather conditions and wind angle have not been ideal unfortunately, very gusty and shifty which has made for some tricky runs. However, we have managed to learn many valuable lessons, quickly identifying some tuning and handling issues that we can work on to improve performance.

Obviously, runways are set up (the way they are) for a reason it's a bit like learning to sail an AC75 down a 60m wide marina arm in 15 30kts of breeze! Needless to say, space is your friend with this craft and we're looking forward to getting it to the desert to let it breath so we can take the next steps with set up and tuning.

Our goal for the remainder of the time Horonuku will be in NZ (next week) is to implement small changes to the steering geometry and wing ballast then tow/sail hopefully on Wednesday to verify changes.

We will also adjust Horonuku to the short setting and do a series of runs on this configuration and then test with the slick rear tyres which will complete the testing phase here in NZ. -- Glenn Ashby

This Wednesday: Q&A Live Call with Tom King
'Train Hard, Fight Easy #2'. From 40th to Olympic Champion in 3 years

In the mid-90s Tom King was a reasonable but not spectacular 470 helmsman. However, when Victor Kovalenko joined the Australian Sailing Team as the 470 coach, things started to change. With his crew Mark Turnbull, Tom's world championship finishes progressed from 40th to 20th to 10th to 1st place.

After three years they had turned from journeymen to world beaters, even winning all three races on one particular day of the World Championship in 2000. They went on to win Olympic gold on Sydney Harbour later on the same year.

These days Tom is a high-flying lawyer, but the Road To Gold crew - Hamish Willcox and Andy Rice - will be transporting Tom back to his high-flying sailing career. Earlier this week we spoke to RS:X Olympic Champion Tom Ashley about his 'Train Hard, Fight Easy' techniques. On the next 60-minute Q&A we'll continue the theme, digging into the 'Train Hard, Fight Easy' techniques that Victor has proven to be so successful not just with Tom and Mark, but with many other Olympic Champions from Ukraine and Australia.

Grand Prix Zero is off and running
The new Grand Prix Zero Class for high performance IRC boats, enjoyed exhilarating racing at their debut regatta, the Royal Ocean Racing Club Vice Admiral's Cup. Eight races were held over three days of competition. Niklas Zennström's Carkeek 40+ Ràn scored eight bullets but the devil is in the detail.

Five of the races were won by less than a minute after IRC time correction. Ian Atkins' GP42 Dark N Stormy was runner up and there was a tie for third between RORC Commodore James Neville HH42 INO XXX and Harmen Jan de Graaf's Ker 43 Baraka GP. INO XXX made the GP Zero podium by countback. Bertie Bicket's modified IC37 Fargo scored three podium race finishes, proving that every boat in the Grand Prix Zero Class enjoyed close racing. The fleet were tested in every wind strength from five to 25 knots. RORC Race Officer Stuart Childerley and his team provided outstanding windward leeward race tracks, and round the cans racing, testing every point of sail.

The next GP Zero regatta will be the RORC IRC National Championships 10-12 June. Seven, possibly eight boats, are expected.

Bahrain To Host The SSL Gold Cup 2022 Final Series
October 28th to November 20th 2022, the Kingdom of Bahrain will host the SSL GOLD CUP 2022 Final Series, the first Football World Cup... in Sailing. The SSL GOLD CUP, a World Sailing Special Event organized every four years by the Sailing Athletes Foundation (SAF), is "THE" ultimate challenge between sailing nations to crown the World Champions, a first in the sport's History.

The Kingdom of Bahrain has been proactive to host international Sport events including F1 Bahrain Grand Prix since 2004, Asian Cycling Championships 2017, the Amateur MMA World Championship 2017, 2018 and 2019.

The SSL GOLD CUP Final Series 2022 will be the first World Class Sailing event to take place in Bahrain since the Military world sailing championship 2010 and the Kingdom Match Race 2021. The new development project Water City Garden, in front of the iconic Manama City skyline, will welcome the event.

Like the World Cup in Football, the SSL GOLD CUP gives a singular equal opportunity challenge for all the 40 teams, who race on the exact same boat, the SSL47, a 14-meter performance racing boat, handed by the organization.

Which boats were designed by Sparkman & Stephens?
Amongst the entrants for the Global Solo Challenge (GSC), you may have noticed a yacht to be skippered by Daffyd Hughes, an S&S 34.

One of the smallest yachts in the fleet that will set off on the circumnavigation next year. This yacht is only 34 feet in length, but it was designed by the great designer Olin Stephens of the American Company Sparkman & Stephens.

We go back to 1929 when a young Stephens designed Dorade, his first ocean-going yacht design. Launched in 1930, in that year, this yacht came second in the Bermuda Race. It then went on to win the following year's Transatlantic Race and, for good measure, whilst it was in Europe, the Fastnet Race as well.

The point I am making is that at the time, Dorade was considerably smaller than the rest of the fleet and won that Transatlantic Race in real and corrected time by a margin of days, despite people at the time saying it was too small and too fragile to enter the race, so please do not ignore Dafydd's yacht in the upcoming GSC, as it may be a strong contender. The S&S 34, a masthead sloop, was first built in 1969 with the first boat launched called Morning Cloud. This new yacht's owner was Sir Edward Heath, who, at the time, was the leader of the British Parliamentary opposition party, and who went on to become British Prime Minister.

Yacht Scoring, a web-based race management and scoring tool used by yacht clubs and race organisers, was founded in 2016 by Luiz Kahl who died unexpectedly in 2021.

The system has been designed to simplify the task of event registration and communications while allowing for complete results in near-real-time.

The single online data-based platform eliminates the need to maintain multiple spreadsheets for entry lists, scratch sheets, ratings, and competitors' information.

He added: "The continuation of Yacht Scoring by the North Sails Group preserves Luiz's legacy and will keep building on his vision."

Rob Bunn will remain as interim manager of Yacht Scoring to help the transition into the North Sails Group.

Landau Marine has extended its facilities into a new base in Marchwood, near Southampton

The site - within the secure perimeter of the former military port - will provide a range of services including a blast and spray facility, with the latest vapour blasting equipment which removes heavy corrosion of steel but also gently removes paint from wood, layer by layer.

"It also makes possible the safe removal of old antifoul and paint from GRP hulls without the risk of gel coat damage, a problem with some traditional blasting techniques," explained Ben Metcalf, Landau MD.

"The investment in the Marchwood site marks a new chapter for Landau Marine and further broadens our already diverse capabilities."

In addition to blasting and spraying, Landau's 1000m2 site is suitable for refit and repair work.

The Yacht Racing Forum announces a partnership with World Sailing which will be actively involved in the thirteenth edition of the conference in Malta on 21-22 November.
