First Finn Gold Cup for The Netherlands
Pieter-Jan Postma, from The Netherlands, made history today by winning the 2022 Finn Gold Cup, the first Dutch winner of this massively prestigious trophy in its 66 year history. Oskari Muhonen, from Finland, took silver, while Hungary's Domonkos Nemeth, took bronze. No more racing was possible on the final day as the very high temperatures killed the breeze.

Nemeth also won the Finn Silver Cup, for the U23 World Championship, from Finland's Joonas Harju and Waltteri Mosio.

The fleet was sent out for a 13.00 start but the early morning southerly soon died away leaving the fleet drifting around on a scorching hot Lake Garda. A brief hope arose when a light breeze built at 14.30, but after a start sequence was attempted, it was soon halted as the breeze swung and then abandoned just before the 15.00 time limit.

Postma also rewrote history in another way. He was sailing a TT2 hull from DC Composites in The Netherlands, and breaks the 27 year run of winning hulls from Devoti Sailing.

Final results after eight races
1. Pieter-Jan Postma, NED, 17
2. Oskari Muhonen, FIN, 22

RORC Vice Admiral's Cup
Cowes: Sunday 22 May, 2022: Today had a change in wind direction to an east-southeasterly that progressively strengthened to 10-11 knots, along with more glorious sunshine for the 50 teams competing at the RORC Vice Admiral's Cup.

The Quarter Tonners enjoyed close competition, with much place changing and just 7.5 points separating the five boats in places four to eight. However, at the front of the fleet the overall lead of Sam Laidlaw's BLT was never threatened and he won the eight-race series counting seven points, having discarded his sole second place. Victory for Julian Metherell's Bullit in the penultimate race saw him take second overall on 13 points, while Louise Morton Bullet took third on 21 points.

The new Grand Prix Zero class was one of the three dominated by one boat, in this case Niklas Zennström's FAST40+ Ràn, which won every race, despite being pushed hard at times by Ian Atkins' GP42 Dark N Stormy.

In the HP30s Jerry Hill and Richard Faulkner's Farr 280 Moral Compass held an overall lead at the end of each of the first two days of racing. However, Chris Townsend and Richard Powell's Gweilo got faster and faster during the regatta, finishing with three consecutive race wins. -- Rupert Holmes

The finish of champions - Nautix
Nautix Equally beloved of Vendee Globe racers and leaving-it-all-behind world cruisers, Nautix's highly-regarded range of specialist yacht finishes is hitting the international mainstream

Most sailors know Nautix antifouling. They've built a great reputation for that in the last 40 years starting from scratch – good going for a small business in Brittany with just 26 staff and a background in windsurf accessories, competing against multinationals. But they don't just make antifoul. They've also developed a wide, innovative range of complete hull protection systems, above and below the waterline, for virtually all hull materials and types of boat.

The full range includes adhesion promoters for GRP, carbon, steel and aluminium, impregnation resins for composites, wood and cast iron, primers for waterproofing and abrasion resistance, undercoats, epoxy fillers for fairing and finishing, thinners, top coats, varnishes and non-skid deck paints.

GUYOT environnement - Team Europe confirmed as fourth IMOCA entry for The Ocean Race
A new IMOCA team is confirmed to participate in The Ocean Race 2022-23. The campaign sees French offshore sailor Benjamin Dutreux joining forces with Offshore Team Germany Olympian Robert Stanjek, the same combination that raced to victory in the inaugural edition of The Ocean Race Europe last summer. Jens Kuphal and Alice Potiron will provide team management.

The GUYOT environnement - Team Europe IMOCA boat has a successful pedigree under the Hugo Boss banner, finishing in second place in the 2016-17 edition of the Vendée Globe and leading the most recent Route du Rhum fleet all the way to Guadeloupe. More recently, the boat has been equipped with new foils and used as a training vehicle for the 11th Hour Racing Team as it prepared its own project for The Ocean Race.

GUYOT environnement - Team Europe is the fourth IMOCA campaign confirmed to be on the start line in Alicante, Spain on 15 January 2023, along with Charlie Enright's 11th Hour Racing Team, Boris Herrmann's Team Malizia, and Paul Meilhat's Biotherm.

Realteam Wins The TF35 Season Opener
After four days of racing on Lake Geneva in light conditions under sunny skies but with a far from straightforward meteorological picture to contend with, Esteban Garcia's Realteam, co-skippered by Jerôme Clerc, has claimed the opening event win of 2022 season after scoring two bullets over the first two days.

With only four races sailed over four days, the TF35 Realstone Cup for Leman hope finished today with one attempted race, which started in seven knots of breeze but was abandoned as the wind died at the first gate.

Second placed Ernesto Bertarelli's Alinghi Red Bull Racing was a close match for Realteam in every race this weekend, taking the win from them in race three after finding better pressure on the right when the fleet split upwind.

The TF35s will meet next in two weeks when the fleet will face a bumper weekend of Lake Geneva racing with two days of fleet racing for the TF35 Mies on either side of the Genève-Rolle-Genève long-distance race.

SSL Gold Cup
SSL Team Antigua & Barbuda's "Rum Runners," SSL Team Estonia's "Icebreakers", SSL Team Ireland's "Green Armada" and SSL Team Tahiti's "Black Pears" are the first teams of SSL Gold Cup's History to qualify to the Final Series.

In Race 4, all teams of Group 1 were on the move to start, but apparently, SSL Team Bermuda "Privateers" had not the information and were way outside in the racecourse and eventually got a false start. Everything went very smoothly for The Balck Pearls of Tahiti, who took the best options on the water to cruise all along the racecourse in Lake Neuchatel until the finish line. Tahiti was followed by SSL Team Antigua & Barbuda, who kept the head of the provisional ranking before Race 5. SSL Team Puerto Rico and SSL Team Bermuda closed the race leaving small room for mistakes.

After their third win in SSL Gold Cup 2022 Qualifying Series in Race 4, SSL Team Estonia "Icebreakers" validated their ticket to the Final Series before racing Race 5. Second in the group, SSL Team Ireland "Green Armada", will go through to the Finals as well.

Before Race 5, SSL Team Serbia "Eagles" were still alive in this Group 2 thanks to their solid 2nd place in Race 4. SSL Team Ireland did not perform as maybe they expected and were in an uncomfortable position before the start of the final showdown.

So in Race 5, it was all about Ireland vs. Serbia. The more experienced Irish did not leave any chance by attacking the Eagles squad right at the Start pushing them behind the Committee Boat. It was then all about leaving them behind. But suddenly, the wind just died, and Race Committee decided to stop the race, confirming the 2nd Qualification ticket to Ireland.

Francois Gabart: "Our Only Objective Is To Run And Win The Route Du Rhum"
On Tuesday François Gabart arrived in Marseille at the helm of his trimaran SVR Lazartigue, which is making a tour of the Mediterranean to meet staff of the Kresk group. It seemed like a good opportunity for Tip & Shaft to talk with him about the performance of the trimaran and of course also the dispute between his team and the Ultim 32/23 class which is now bound for the courts.

The conflict with the Ultim 32/23 class: you said last week that you had taken legal action, does this mean that since the case was publicized at the end of March, you have really failed to take any steps towards each other?

There have been exchanges, discussions but which unfortunately have come to nothing. We think we have done all that we can to try to find a solution. The other parties will necessarily have a different view and things to say, otherwise there would be no dispute. What is certain is that today there is no agreement so even if we never wanted this and it really is terrible to come to this, we have no other choice. The Route du Rhum is coming up and we find it deeply unfair that the trimaran SVR Lazartigue cannot participate in it when the experts and the rules consider that this boat is compliant.

What is the legal action? The action brought by the Kresk group, owner of the SVR Lazartigue trimaran, is a fixed-day procedure which makes it possible to obtain a fast track court decision in an 'emergency' situation. That level of urgency having been recognized, the hearing will take place on June 23 at the Paris Court of Justice, the Kresk group hoping for a judgment before the judicial holidays (in August). It is a judgment which is subject to appeal.

Given the urgency of the situation - Kresk wishes to ensure the presence of the trimaran at the start of the Route du Rhum-Destination Guadeloupe -, rather than focusing on its compliance with the rules, which would have had an impact on the duration of the procedure, the action aims to enforce the agreement signed on February 16 between the Ultim 32/23 class and the Kresk group that provided for recourse to World Sailing, provided that the international federation renders an opinion before a fixed date (March 4). After this date, the class was due to authorize SVR Lazartigue to race the Route du Rhum. However, Kresk considers that the opinion was issued after that date. Which will therefore be the subject of the legal discussion.

Project Speed Update: Pulling The Parts Together
Almost within the blink of an eye, the Emirates Team New Zealand Land Speed record craft is being fitted together at the Auckland base. Time is ticking and as usual, it's the team against the clock to stay on track with timelines and deadlines.

Once fitted out and ready to sail the next stop is the RNZAF base at Whenuapai in West Auckland, where the Air Force have been typically welcoming, ready, and willing to help the project in anyway they can.

But in the meantime, "all of the main structural elements have been completed by the yard, so now it is cockpit fit-out, canopy install, all the steering, and control systems, the front wheel assembly goes on, the rear wheel assembly goes in. So it is really fitting it out, getting the pilot in there and every sorted to suit him."

The pilot of course is Glenn Ashby, who is watching a childhood dream and ambition literally be put together in front of his eyes. With no time for sentimentality, he has been right in there in the mix amongst the frenzy of picking up and installing parts from around the city.

"The last piece of the puzzle is the wing, which has been produced by the great team at Southern Spars," explained Ashby "We have that here now and the tailplane is just being finished off as well. Then we plug it all together and make sure it fits into the fuselage."

It all sounds so easy, like a simple jigsaw puzzle - if only.
