Ronstan Finn UK National Championships

Finn UK National Championship A strong turnout of 40 Finns gathered at WPNSA for the 2022 Ronstan UK National Championships. The growing popularity of the class was evidenced by the presence of several top returning Finnsters, including multiple Endeavour Trophy champion Nick Craig and BFA U23 squad graduate, Cameron Tweedle.

The competitiveness of the fleet was underlined by Lawrence Crispin, who was only a point behind in second place and also claimed the first Grand Master title. Nick Craig was 5 points astern in third and won the Master category and was so back in love with the Finn he promised to buy a boat!

Kristian Sjoberg won the first Great Grand Master title in 6th place and Howard Sellers claimed the battle of the Legends in 28th place by a point from Peter Blick and Super Legend Richard Hart.

Newly elected BFA Secretary Simon Percival rounded the celebrations off by thanking Pete Allam's event team at WPSA for an excellent and very friendly event and recorded the BFA's thanks again to Ronstan and The Old Salt Loft for supporting another successful UK Finn National Championship. The visiting on the water judge, Sian was so impressed with the fleet's attitude and on the water behaviours she had little trade all weekend and said the Finns "Were one of the nicest classes ever", and she was keen to come back as a judge again - praise indeed.

Lyra on fire at the IMA Maxi Europeans
Scheduled for day two of the IMA Maxi Europeans' inshore/coastal racing were two windward-leewards. After a delay out on the Bay of Naples, the wind finally built to 8-12 knots from the west. After one aborted start due to a wind shift and another for a general recall, racing for the 21 maxis eventually got underway at 1515 CEST.

With the 2.1 mile course set to the north of Capri, the lead trio of Lord Irvine Laidlaw's Reichel/Pugh 82 Highland Fling XI, Sir Peter Ogden's JV77 Jethou and Peter Dubens JV72 North Star remained in close contact. Today Highland Fling XI was able to gain enough of a lead to claim Class 1.

Leading overall at present was today's Class 2 winner for a second consecutive day, Terry Hui's all-black Wally 77 Lyra, with tactician Mitch Booth. Remarkably Lyra still managed to win, despite blowing up a spinnaker after it snagged on a spreader tip.

The wind on the Bay of Naples subsequently veered into the north and then the northeast and built rapidly into the mid-20s but after one attempt to get a second windward-leeward away, the wind had moved too far right to lay a good course and with the hour getting on the fleet was sent home.

Racing at the IMA Maxi European Championship continues tomorrow and runs until Friday May 20. -- James Boyd

Successful M32 Season Start on Lake Garda
The Ora is filling in around one o'clock, steady 18-22 knots, a bit stronger along the mountainside. Warm temperatures, blue skies, and five intensive races. They all agree, sailors, coaches, umpires, and organizers. This is why we come to Lake Garda. The first venue of five for the M32 European season

Inga from Sweden with Richard Goransson had a flawless first day winning all five races. However, later in the regatta, it got more challenging as both Vitamina Veloce and Leeloo were stealing race wins; in fact, Vitamina took the 'daily first' on the last day.. "The other teams made it a bit difficult for us" says Otto Hamel of team Inga. "A lot of tight situations, and they really gave us a good match" In the end, no one got close and Inga from Sweden, last year's Worlds bronze medallist, walked away the win and will be the team to beat for the next one. "Good team work, Inga has always been pretty solid in the pressure," says Oliver Tizzard of Inga from Sweden.

The season continues with the fleet heading north for classic sailing venues Medemblik in June and Marstrand in July. In September, the class is returning to Garda for the European Championship as a final preparation for the season's highlight, the World Championship in Cascais in October. This summer, several American teams will join the European series to get a feel for the fleet before the Worlds.

Final overall
1. Inga from Sweden - Richard Goransson, 22 points
2. Vitamina Veloce - Andrea LaCorte, 36
3. Leeloo - Harold Vermeulen, 49
4. Vikings - Hakan Svensson, 59
5. Vitamina Rapida - Marco Radman, 61

American Gardner LaMaurice is the 48th entry in the Global Solo Challenge
Gardner LaMaurice Gardner LaMaurice, who will turn 25 this month, is now the youngest entry so far in the Global Solo Challenge 2023-2024.

Interview: Where does your passion for sailing come from?

My passion from sailing comes from the fact that I have been sailing all my life. I've been in and out of several hobbies and adventures but through it all for the last 13 years I have been sailing. It grew more and more on me as I went along to the point that it took over my life. It's one of the most satisfying things a man can do. That feeling of freedom when you cut the engine and are going the same speed powered only by the wind is indescribable to someone who has never done it. The feeling of leaving a port to stay at anchor for days on end in the middle of nowhere, or at a mooring some guy has told you about, or to go on a lengthy race, again, is indescribable. I guess my passion comes from the freedom you get.

What lessons have you learned from sailing?

Never underestimate anything. The moment you feel like you know everything you're doing and you are confident is when you've doomed yourself. You have to always stay vigilant and be ready for the unknown.

Youth Foiling Gold Cup
Eleven international teams are getting ready to compete in Act 2 of the 69F Youth Foiling Gold Cup 2022 in Slovenia. Competition will take place from 17 to 22 May in Portorož, a beautiful resort town on Slovenia's Adriatic coast.

Back in February, at YFGC Act 1 in Miami, the battle for overall honours came down to a match race between Team Argentina and Real Team France. This time Real Team France are looking to go one better and take the top step of the Portorož podium.

The crews will do battle aboard Persico 69F boats, flying monohulls measuring 6.9 metres and equipped with foils. The boats are supplied by the organisation in order to ensure fairness across the fleet. The spectacular and high-intensity races last around 12 minutes, and take place on a quadrangle course, designed to put the crews' manoeuvring and handling skills on the foilers to the test, at speeds that can reach up to 30 knots. The teams, which must be mixed and are composed of three to four athletes, already have top results at other international sailing events and are coached by professional sailors and Olympians.Teams familiarise themselves with the racing area during the training day on 16 May. Then qualifications are scheduled 17-18 May, Knock Out rounds on 19-20 May, and Finals 21-22 May.

Entering and Leaving France for Cruisers: An Update from The Cruising Association
The Cruising Association has received further information that two additional French channel ports - Saint Cast and Saint Quay - have now been given special dispensation for a limited period to permit arrivals and departures without passports being stamped.

From 1 June 2022 to 30 September 2022 visitors arriving to the ports of Saint Cast and Saint Quay by sea from outside the EU may submit a 'Preavis Immigration'/Notice of Arrival form to avoid the need for passports to be stamped. The form must be submitted at least 24 hours in advance of arrival or for shorter passages before departure from the previous port. The same process applies to departure.

A copy of the 'Preavis Immigration'/Notice of Arrival form must be kept on board at all times. This dispensation applies uniquely to Saint Cast and Saint Quay, which are both on the north Brittany coast.
