Normandy Channel Race
As expected, the outward leg across the Celtic Sea has been a quick downwind passage for the fleet in the 13th edition of the CIC Normandy Channel Race, with some of the Class40s posting peak speeds bordering on 30 knots. This morning, ten crews have already rounded the course mark of Tuskar Rock. Upon their arrival at the south-east tip of Ireland, conditions were boisterous with 25 knots of S'ly wind, with possible gusts of 30-35 knots. It was Corentin Douguet and Yoann Richomme aboard Quéguiner-Innoveo, who were first to make the rounding at 02:47 UTC this morning. They were 33 minutes ahead of Inter Invest (03:20 UTC) and 44 minutes in front of Redman (03:31 UTC), the latter pretty much neck and neck with Crédit Mutuel (03:36 UTC).

The leaders have already launched onto the return leg of the Celtic Sea then. Following the modification to the course as announced by Race Management yesterday, the skippers are now embroiled in a 230-mile long beat to a new course mark at Grande Basse de Portsall at the entrance to the English Channel. The sailors are continuing to contend with a S/SW'ly wind in lively conditions.

Forecasts indicate that the wind will ease over the course of the morning with a few gusts in some bracing squalls, which will doubtless keep the teams on their toes.

Top ten ranking - 17 May 19h00 FR
1. Queguiner - Innoveo / Corentin Douguet - Yoann Richomme, 350 nm to finish
2. Inter Invest / Matthieu - Perraut Kevin Bloch, + 3.5nm
3. Crosscall / Aurelien Ducroz - Gerald Veniard, + 4.6
4. Credit Mutuel / Ian Lipinski - Ambrogio Beccaria, + 6.2
5. Groupe Snef / Xavier Macaire - Achille Nebout, + 9.2
6. Eora / Rupert Henry - Jack Boutell, + 9.4
7. Redman / Antoine Carpentier - Nicolas Jossier, + 12.1
8. Project Rescue Ocean / Axel Trehin Frederic Denis, + 13.2
9. Edenred / Emmanuel Le Roch - Alexis Loison, + 14.8
10. Legallais / Pierre Casenave-pere - Fabien Delahaye, + 18.9

North Star maintains her IMA Maxi Europeans winning streak
Following on from the Regata dei Tre Golfi offshore race, the International Maxi Association's Maxi European Championship entered a new phase with the first of four days of inshore/coastal racing at the Maxi Yacht Sorrento Trophy, part of Tre Golfi Sailing Week.

Today's 28 mile course set off in a southerly with an upwind leg to a mark off Punta Campanella at the tip of the Sorrento peninsula and then on to a long leg across the Bay of Naples in a light to moderate hardening breeze to a mark off Naples before returning to the finish off Sorrento.

At the front of the fleet the excellent racing continued between Lord Irvine Laidlaw's Reichel/Pugh 82 Highland Fling XI, Sir Peter Ogden's JV77 Jethou and Peter Dubens JV72 North Star. Highland Fling XI stole a march on her rivals at the top mark when she performed a bear away set into clean air with the current as the former Maxi 72s gybe-set and headed back into the coast in search of more pressure, but much more traffic. Setting off across the Bay of Naples, the front runners saw a 40° header that brought out their reaching gear.

As Highland Fling XI disappeared off ahead, Jethou was extending away from her shorter rival until her reaching kite tore and she was forced to continue bare headed for several minutes while her crew scrabbled to find a replacement. North Star was just able to draw level by the time Jethou got going. But the damage was done and North Star went on to win the day by just over a minute from Jethou, with Highland Fling XI fourth overall under IRC.

Racing continues Wednesday with a first start scheduled for 1100 CEST. -- James Boyd

Finn another day...
The famous Garda wind machine broke down today and the 111 Finn sailors at the Finn Gold Cup at Fraglia Vela Malcesine on Lake Garda, Italy, will have to wait for another day to begin this long-heralded restart of elite Finn sailing.

The early morning northerly Peler was a solid 20-25 knots but eased through the morning. An encouraging 6-8 knots from the south built from around midday and hopes were high for a nice southerly Ora in the afternoon. However it never stabilised or increased much more and after one attempt at a start the wind was flicking right off the western shoreline, and shortly afterwards Garda became a mirror.

The fleet was sent ashore to wait and then racing was abandoned for the day.

When it finally starts, racing continues until Saturday 21 May. -- Robert Deaves

Grand Prix Zero launch at RORC Vice Admiral's Cup
The inaugural event for the new IRC Racing Class, Grand Prix Zero (GP Zero) will be at the Royal Ocean Racing Club's Vice Admiral's Cup 20-22 May. The 2022 GP Zero Series has teams racing at five established regattas in The Solent from May to October.

2022 GP Zero Circuit
20-22 May - RORC Vice Admirals Cup
10-12 June - RORC IRC Nationals
30 July-06 August - Cowes Week
01-02 October - HRSC Autumn Championship
08-09 October - HRSC Autumn Championship

"In light of the recent drift in race activity away from IRC keelboats and towards One-Design, many owners of competitive IRC designs, particularly those with higher ratings, have been discussing ways for performance orientated boats to compete against one another in the Solent and beyond," commented GP Zero Class President, Ian Atkins. "The conclusion is to create a new class dedicated to the group - Grand Prix Zero. With the support of the RORC and several Solent based Yacht Clubs we propose a rating band from 1.192 to 1.394 and a DLR max of 105. This rating band includes IC37s all the way to TP52's, this initial consideration can be extended if the majority of GP Zero owners agree."

Women's Match Racing World Championships
The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron is bringing world-class sailing back to Auckland with the 2022 Women's Match Racing World Championships, as the final event of the inaugural Women's World Match Racing Tour, set to take place on November 9th - 13th.

The Women's Match Racing World Championships will see 14 skippers invited to take part, including last year's champion and World Number 1 Pauline Courtois and her Match in Pink by Normandy Elite Team. This also means that the 2022 New Zealand Women's Match Racing Championship will also act as a qualifier for a wildcard berth into this year's World Championships.

The event will see the 14 teams compete a round robin racing each other once [in Elliott 7 keelboats], with the top 8 qualifying to the best-of-3 quarterfinals, semi-finals and final to decide both the 2022 Women's Match Racing World Champion, and the overall winner of the inaugural Women's World Match Racing Tour.

British America's Cup Challenger Ineos Britannia to set up training base in Mallorca, Spain
Sir Ben Ainslie's British America's Cup Challenger of Record, Ineos Britannia, will set up a training base on the Spanish Mediterranean island of Mallorca this summer as the UK syndicate ramps up its sailing operations ahead of the 37th America's Cup in 2024.

Ulysse Nardin, the Official Timing Partner of The Ocean Race, announce The Ocean Race DIVER watch, featuring upcycled fishing nets

Ulysse Nardin is accelerating its use of innovative alternative materials, announcing the launch of the very first DIVER model largely composed of recycled fishing nets.

The Swiss watchmaker has been making marine chronometers of incomparable reliability for explorers since 1846. Today, sailors are often confronted with plastic pollution and fishing nets are a significant source: up to 640,000 metric tons are lost or abandoned each year (according to the UN), joining the nine million metric tons of plastic discharged into the sea annually (Science).

"How can we transform some of this plastic into a luxury item? With the help of start-ups such as FIL&FAB, we have successfully managed to fabricate and sell watches derived from recycled fishing nets," announced Patrick Pruniaux, CEO of Ulysse Nardin.

The Ocean Race DIVER embodies innovation and tradition with the mechanical movement of the watch is built on tradition and historical know-how but with 95% of the components of sourced within a 30 km radius of the manufacturer, half of them coming from recycling channels (recycled steel and brass in particular: 100% of Ulysse Nardin timepiece movements make use of recycled brass).

The strap is fully recycled from fishing nets, transformed into reels of yarn by the French company JTTI.

From June 2022, The Ocean Race DIVER will be sold in an original pack: a water-resistant R-PET pouch slipped into a dry bag recycled from the sea by Helly Hansen, the Official Clothing Supplier of The Ocean Race.
