SailGP Australia Celebrate Victory
Tom Slingsby's Australia SailGP Team appears to have lost none of the momentum from its Season 2 Grand Final victory in San Francisco in March, as it dominated the podium race of the Bermuda Sail Grand Prix presented by Hamilton Princess to claim the opening title of the season

Racing on the second day of the season took place in perfect conditions. Bermuda's Great Sound sparkled under clear skies with fans packing the shoreline and cramming onto boats to see the action on the glittering turquoise waters.

In a fantastic debut weekend, the Phil Robertson-led Canada SailGP Team finished in third place, while Sir Ben Ainslie and the British team narrowly missed out on back to back Bermuda titles to finish the weekend as runners-up.

After an indifferent day one performance, Australia once again delivered when it mattered, winning the second race of day two and then storming to victory in the final well ahead of Canada and Great Britain.

Attention now turns to the United States Sail Grand Prix | Chicago at Navy Pier, the second stop of SailGP Season 3.

Good to get going...
DSS And get going she definitely did soon after the first new DSS-equipped Infiniti 52 ocean racer hit the water in the UK

Stu Bannatyne worked up the following article for Seahorse Magazine on his experience of sailing the boat, but of course with recent events we just want to add an introductory note on the owner's feedback prior to the boat hitting a very solid object in the ocean…

" We managed to sail almost 5000 nautical miles aboard our magnificent yacht, which was long enough time to conclude that the new Infiniti 52 exceeded all our expectations for the performance of the boat. I will never forget the feeling when Tulikettu leaned on its foil and lifted herself above the waves for the first time reaching effortlessly boat speeds of 28 knots without help from surf waves, and the wind speed didn't come even close to our boat speed back then."

Said Stu Bannatyne, Tulikettu Racing team's coach and Doyle Sails representative - "I was in total shock and saddened to hear about the loss of Tulikettu. The few times I sailed on the boat during early sea trials were truly exciting and she gave more than a few glimpses of her very impressive performance through a range of conditions. An absolute pleasure to drive and trim, Tulikettu was I think a genuine step forward in technology and performance for an offshore 52 foot race boat. I understand that Arto is very keen to be able to get back into a new Infiniti 52 as soon as possible. This is great news and completely understandable! I look forward to the opportunity to join him once again."

67th Regata dei Tre Golfi
This edition of the race has been characterised by good weather, with the tacticians having to work hard to take advantage of the light breezes in the Gulf, as forecast.

The fleet was pushed along by the sea breeze during the day, but then saw a big drop in the wind during the night, a scene that will most likely be replayed tonight.

While the social program offers different events each evening, the sporting schedule includes four high profile events: the 67th Tre Golfi Regatta, the first European Maxi Championship, the ORC Mediterranean Championship, and the Tyrrhenian National Championship.

Multihulls
A real match race was underway between Maserati and Mana, with the latter in the lead up until Ponza. Riccardo Pavoncelli's boat with Paul Larsen on board was ahead up to the rounding of the island, but Soldini's trimaran managed to overtake between Ponza and Ischia.

Maxi Yachts
The first boat across the finish line in this category was Furio Benussi's Arca SGR, despite some damage to the keel management system. Another match race took place between the M72 North Star and the M74 Jethou, with the latter in the lead up until the island of Ventotene, when Duben's North Star pulled ahead.

ORC Classes
In the ORC Group A, the boats are still close to Ischia, headed for the islet of Li Galli.

The TP52s Blue and Xio (ahead in Category A), have been racing neck and neck in real time. How they manage the rounding of the islet of Li Galli and the channel to Capri will be decisive.

The smaller boats in the fleet, gathered in Groups B, C and D, have suffered the most from the weather conditions in this edition, with the bulk of the fleet still sailing between Ventotene and Ponza.

Among the Swan 42s in the ORC B group, Mela and Be Wild were together up to the island of Ischia, but have now taken different paths.

The boats will continue to cross the finish line throughout the night until the early hours of the morning.

Finn Gold Cup
One of the most coveted trophies in the sport of sailing will be raced for next week at Fragila Vela Macesine on Lake Garda, Italy. The 2022 Finn Gold Cup opens on Sunday with an impressive 110 entries from 23 nations so far.

While, the only former Finn Gold Cup winner competing next week is Germany's Thomas Schmid, who won in 1988, there is a strong list of contenders to try and become the 66th winner of this legendary cup.

The line up includes several former Olympians, with Dutchman Pieter-Jan Postma headlining the list of favourites, though for sure it will be a tough competition through the fleet.

Also sailing will the 2021 World Masters champion, Valerian Lebrun, from France, and former Olympians Paul McKenzie and Florian Raudaschl. In addition there are a number of former Masters champions including Portugal's Filipe Silva and John Greenwood from Britain. Current Grand Masters Champion Laurent Hay, from France, is also sure to be figure well.

Italy is fielding the largest team and on home waters should do well.

The event will also include the Finn Silver Cup, for the U23 world title. The defending champion, Domonkos Nemeth, has been training hard and should also figure well in the senior fleet.

I Love Poland claims inaugural IMA Caribbean Maxi Challenge
Following on from its inshore and offshore circuits in the Mediterranean, for 2022 the International Maxi Association introduced its new Caribbean Maxi Challenge. Following January's RORC Transatlantic Race in association with the IMA, the Caribbean Maxi Challenge comprised the RORC Caribbean 600, followed by three of the leading Caribbean regatta, St Maarten Heineken Regatta, Les Voiles de St Barth – Richard Mille and finally Antigua Sailing Week.

Over the course of the four events more than 30 maxis (of 60+ft) took part including several of the most high profile international teams, such as George David's Rambler 88, the Farr 100 Leopard, Wendy Schmidt's new Botin Partners 85 Deep Blue, the former Maxi 72s Vesper and Bella Mente campaigned by Americans Jim Swartz and Hap Fauth respectively. However most of these only competed in one event whereas to qualify for the IMA Caribbean Maxi Challenge requires two.

Volvo Ocean Race boats, notably the newer VO65s and VO70s, are popular for this series and represented around one third of the maxi fleet that competed in the Caribbean this season. However many are charter boats whereas the ultimate winner, I Love Poland was sailed by the same crew in both the RORC Caribbean 600 and St Maarten Heineken Regatta – the two events in which she competed.

The strongest maxi turn out, and thus also earning the most points, was in the RORC Caribbean 600 in which, under IRC corrected time, I Love Poland finished third overall. She then went on to finish third at St Maarten Heineken Regatta behind two VO65s, her compatriots on board Sailing Poland and Janssen de Jong - Dutchman. These two results were enough to leave I Love Poland leading the Caribbean Maxi Challenge from Leopard3 by two points and at the end of this weekend's final points tally, the young Polish team clinched the inaugural title and an antique silver trophy (right) which will be presented in September at the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup. -- James Boyd / International Maxi Association
