Countdown to season 2 of the Pro Sailing Tour
Season 2 of the Pro Sailing Tour, one of ocean racing's most exciting new competitions, gets underway on Thursday in Bonifacio, Corsica, with two days of inshore racing on the agenda, followed by a round Corsica challenge that kicks-off on Saturday.

The fleet of 7 - the 8th Armel Tripon, will return for Episode 2 - Ocean Fifty foiling trimarans will descend on one of the most beautiful locations the Mediterranean has to offer for a four-day spectacle that will give a glimpse of who might challenge the defending 2021 champions Leyton, led by Brit Sam Goodchild.

The turquoise waters off Bonifacio will be the battleground for what promises to be an intense and committed effort by the fleet to oust defending champions Leyton, who won season 1 decisively in 2021 taking four out of five victories to claim the overall title.

Sébastien Rogues, Primonial - with Solitaire du Figaro winner Pierre Quiroga among his crew - and Erwan Le Roux, Koesio, 1st and 2nd respectively in the Transat Jacques Vabre, are also ones to watch. While Gilles Lamiré, Groupe GCA-1001 Sourires, who recently finished 3rd at the Caribbean 600 off the back of setting a round-Martinique record earlier in the year, is also very motivated to make his mark.

Armel Tripon, skipper of Les P'tits Doudous, will be sitting out the season's opening regatta following a capsize off La Coruña. He hopes to re-join the fleet in Brest for Episode 2.

Eric Peron, skippering Komilfo, is this season's newcomer to the Pro Sailing Tour.

Melges 24 World Championship
Fort Lauderdale, FL, USA - With several days of pre-regatta registration, boat and sails inspection at Pier Sixty-Six now completed and first practice races sailed, on the eve of the official start of racing, all thirty-one boats competing at the 2022 Melges 24 World Championship in Fort Lauderdale, FL, U.S, are moored in the docks of Lauderdale Yacht Club, where this evening at six o'clock will be regatta's Opening Ceremony.

Melges 24 World Championship 2022 is hosted by Lauderdale Yacht Club (LYC) and organized along with the International Melges 24 Class Association (IM24CA) and U.S. Melges 24 Class Association (USM24CA) on May 7-15.

This year's Championship has attracted entries from five nations and features crews from Canada, Great Britain, Italy, Germany, and United States. As is expected at major Melges 24 championships, the pedigree of the fleet is impressive as ever, boasting past Melges 24 World Champions, U.S. Sailing Rolex Yachtsmen, any number of dinghy, one-design and offshore national and world champions, as well as Class stalwarts and some of the most talented international Corinthian crews to be found anywhere.

Ten teams have qualified to race as Corinthians at the 2022 World Championship including defending, three-time Corinthian World Champion Niccolo Bertola (ITA) at the helm of Taki 4, 2019 Corinthian U.S. National Champion Steve Suddath on 3 and a Half Men and 2017/2019 Corinthian Melges 24 North American Champion Fraser McMillan (CAN) on Sunnyvale, if to name only a few.

The International Melges 24 World Championship is raced for the Melges Performance Sailboats Trophy. This trophy was presented in 1998 by the Melges family of Melges Boatworks, Zenda, USA to the International Melges 24 Class as the World Championship Perpetual Trophy.

Which boats were designed by Groupe Finot & Finot-Conq?
Jean Marie Finot is a Frenchman, who became passionate about design and architecture after seeing the French rebuilding efforts following the devastation suffered by his home region, the mountainous Vosges region, during World War II.

After having been involved in designing a sailing boat for the local Sailing School, Finot teamed up with Philippe Harlé and getting no interest from any French Shipyards, the boat was eventually built by the Dutch firm Huisman. This boat was an IOR ¼ ton yacht called Écume de Mer.

This boat immediately won the 1970 & 1972 ¼ ton cup and was later heralded 'Boat of the Year' in 1975.

As a result of this success and the interest in his design, Finot set up his business Groupe Finot in Vannes, France in 1973.

In 1985 Pascal Conq, another French designer joined the group. Conq's pedigree was impeccable and he is. To this day, regarded as a quiet genius. Indeed in 1982 Conq had invented the canting keel, so his expertise and innovation was a fantastic addition to the group.

Together they have designed over 200 boats for clients around the world. In the period 1978 to 2017, they designed 61 boats for the famous French boatbuilders Beneteau alone.

It is believed that over 25,000 boats designed and built by this combination were sold worldwide. in 2009 the design aspect of the group was taken over by a new company, Finot-Conq SARL leaving the original company to concentrate on research. -- Dave Proctor

The Alternative Propulsion Meeting For A Carbon-Free Future For Yachting

Monaco E-Prix As the 5th Monaco E-Prix and Salon Ever ends in the Principality, both focused on sustainability and renewable energy, the Yacht Club de Monaco has extended its lead in the search for eco-friendly solutions as it gears up for the 9th Monaco Energy Boat Challenge 4-9 July 2022.

Held under the aegis of the collective 'Monaco, Capital of Advanced Yachting' umbrella brand and bringing together a new generation of engineers, Monaco Energy Boat Challenge intends to play its part in meeting the 21st century's energy and environmental challenges. It is doing this by promoting innovative solutions for recreational boats, particularly in the propulsion and alternative energy field. Since its launch in 2014, the event has gone from strength to strength establishing itself as the international rendezvous for tomorrow's yachting.

For this edition, more than 35 teams, including 27 universities will represent 20 nationalities in the Principality. "We want to build the future through an eco-responsible societal prism that cares about future generations. The yachting industry cannot evolve if it does not incorporate the sustainable development concept into all its initiatives," says YCM General Secretary Bernard d'Alessandri.

Alongside countries like Indonesia, Monaco, France, Greece, Italy, Portugal, United Arab Emirates, Peru and China with the Hainan Institute of Electronics, Canada and India are making their first appearance since the event started. These two nations will be represented by students from the Montreal Polytechnic and Kumaraguru College of Technology.

Organised in partnership with the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, with support from Credit Suisse, BMW and SBM Offshore, as well as Dutch shipyard Oceanco, the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge powers creativity and stimulates innovation.

With registrations confirmed for the Solar and Energy classes, it is the turn of non-CE regulated prototypes and hydrogen in the Open Sea Class to finalise their registrations, while CE ratified boats have until 1st July.

52 Super Series Go Smartmark in 2022
During the upcoming five regatta season the 52 SUPER SERIES will utilise autonomous remote controlled marks from the German company Smartmark. The buoys were comprehensively tested last season at the Rolex TP52 World Championship in Mallorca. The marks can be precisely remotely controlled to a GPS position said to be accurate to within 11cms.

The Smartmark will significantly reduce the number of RIBs and personnel required on the water each day thereby reducing the fuel burned and thereby contributing to the circuit's sustainability targets this year. It will also eliminate the use of anchors for mark buoys which damage the seabed.

And while the sustainability gains are significant and long lasting there are expected to be some improved efficiency and accuracy in course laying which is all controlled from the Race Committee Boat.

The Smartmark are built around a GRP hull – like a small RIB - and are positioned using 3-D Drone technology. Each has quadruple sensors - four gyroscopes, four barometers, four compasses and seven thermal sensors. One part of the sensors is thermally encapsulated whereas the other part is located in the atmosphere. With the help of the intelligent software the sensors are responsible for more than 70% of the precision of the Smartmark (30% by GPS). Allowing to distinguish whether the mark is moving or it's deviations in the GPS signal. They are positioned using two electric motors. A web based interface system makes it relatively straightforward for the PRO to set up the desired course geometry and make any changes quickly and efficiently.

Off Until Monday
Your humble narrator will assume the role of very proud father at the end of this week as his youngest child graduates from nursing college and joins the transplant team at a highly prestigious teaching hospital. She fought and beat a number of serious health crises in her young life; she turned those struggles into empathy for others. I'll be the fellow in the seersucker suit doing the chest thumping with tears in his eyes. Back on Monday...
