Axxess Marine Y2K Race Day
The third day of Antigua Sailing Week delivered yet another king-size helping of outstanding racing conditions for hundreds of sailors from all over the world. 15 knots of trade winds, pumping up to 18 in the gusts gave exhilarating racing to all 15 classes at Antigua Sailing Week. Axxess Marine Y2K Race Day is also a special celebration for Antiguan youths racing at the world-famous regatta. Under the banner of the Axxess Marine Y2K (Youth to Keel Boat) Programme young Antiguans are inspired to develop as members of the sailing community.

Winners on Day 3: Ocean Breeze, Tschuss, Pata Negra, Blitz, Scarlet Oyster, Hermes, Kai, GFA Caraïbes - La Morrigane, Tosca, Holding Pattern, Jenk, PepsiMax - Montebello, Schrodinger, Talitha, Aproache Nevis, KHS&S Contractors, Braque, Tintoret, and Daisy. Results from Antigua Sailing Week are on YachtScoring.com

Y2K was launched in 2018 at Antigua Sailing Week and is supported by the Antigua and Barbuda Sailing Association. Y2K aims to give local youth sailors keelboat experience during Antigua Sailing Week. This year over 35 local Antiguans are racing on a huge variety of boats.

CSA - Bareboat 3
Neil Harvey & Michael Cannon have enjoyed tremendous success at past editions of Antigua Sailing Week. After three days of racing this year KHS&S Contractors - Girl has scored six straight bullets. The crew are incredibly experienced, including Kiwi Tink Chambers, who last sailed with Neil Harvey on the record-breaking Maxi Kialoa III.

CSA Sportsboat
The new Sportboat Class for Antigua Sailing Week has a significant number of Y2K sailors racing including many of the very first Y2K sailors from 2018. Cork 1720 NSA Spirit is skippered by Jules Mitchell who has three years of experience with the Y2K programme. NSA Spirit is currently second in class, fiercely defending their class win in 2019. This year, racing on NSA Spirit with him are Xavier Athill and Junella King, all of whom are Y2K alumni.

CSA Racing 1
Volvo 70 Ocean Breeze, chartered to Steve Travis with a team from the Seattle YC won their first race today. On board the powerful 70ft canting keel ocean racer is Y2K sailors Shanae Jervier and Daniel Brown.

Gearing up for the first IMA Maxi European Championship
The Rolex countdown clock is ticking for the 26 yachts competing in the International Maxi Association's first ever Maxi European Championship, taking place over 14-21st May out of Sorrento, Italy. This comprises the Regata dei Tre Golfi offshore race and the Maxi Yacht Sorrento Trophy inshores on the Bay of Naples and around Capri. The former will carry a 1.25x points co-efficient. Both events form part of the larger Tre Golfi Sailing Week, this year replacing Rolex Capri Sailing Week.

the 67th Regata dei Tre Golfi is the second oldest event in the Italian offshore racing calendar. The maxis will set sail from off Naples' Porticciolo di Santa Lucia, home to both the historic Castel dell'Ovo and the Circolo del Remo e della Vela Italia's clubhouse at 1900 on Saturday 14 May, half an hour before the main fleet. The 155 mile course takes the fleet north through the bays of Naples, Salerno and Gaeta, around Ponza and then south, where they can leave Capri to port or starboard, before continuing on to the Li Galli rocks, the turning mark off the Amalfi coast. They then return, via the south side of Capri, to the finish off Marina Grande.

The IMA Maxi European Championship continues with the inshore races of the Maxi Yacht Sorrento Trophy running over Tuesday, 17 May until Friday, 20 May on a mix of windward-leeward and coastal courses, including the competitors' favourite - a lap of Capri.

Results in the Regata dei Tre Golfi and the Maxi Yacht Sorrento Trophy also respectively go towards the IMA's Mediterranean Maxi Offshore Challenge (MMOC) and the Mediterranean Maxi Inshore Challenge (MMIC) championships. -- James Boyd / International Maxi Association

Breathtaking stuff - Aeolos
Aeolos The stunning and stunningly affordable Aeolos P30 is about to get a big sister... Hans Genthe introduces us to his latest concept, the new P45

In various forums the question arises again and again: which cruising yachts can plane? In 1982 I had already dealt with this question for the first time and found a well-founded answer in the first edition of Konstruktion und Bau von Yachten by H. Dieter Scharping. I was then able to learn a lot more in the towing tank of the Hamburg Shipbuilding Research Institute during my shipbuilding studies - and to now see things more practically: The more curve in the underwater hull (rocker), the more difficult it is for the boat to detach itself from the wave system and leave its transom wave behind (planing). Roughly speaking, with any rocker angle of 15 degrees or less in the last 20-30 per cent of the craft, a boat can start surfing and eventually also plane.

The more weight a boat has, the more buoyancy it needs, and the more curved the lines underwater, the worse it can plane or surf. The planing ability therefore depends less on the beam and more on the weight. Wide-beam yachts can carry more weight with flatter lines. The BB10 can plane with only 2.3m of beam, but the boat weighs only 2.2t. But you have to mind the weight of your luggage - more than 30kg/person is not allowed!

IRC European Championship
Having previously straddled Europe, visiting other major yachting hubs such as Cowes, Cork, Marseille and Sanremo, the seventh edition of the prestigious IRC European Championship this year will take place over 25-28 August in the Netherlands, alongside Damen Breskens Sailing Weekend.

This will be first time that the IRC European Championship has been held since 2019 after the pandemic forced the last two editions to be cancelled. In 2019 the championship for the simple, single number rule, operated internationally by the Royal Ocean Racing Club and the Union Nationale pour la Course au Large, was dominated by two Marseille-based boats: the winner Yves Ginoux's Farr 36 Absolutely II and Jean-Pierre Joly's GP42 Confluence Sopra DPMF, finishing ahead of the local boat Gianluigi Dubbini's Italia Yachts 9.98 Fuoriserie Sarchiapone.

Close to the Belgium border, on the south side of the River Scheldt leading to Antwerp, Breskens is well situated as a yacht racing centre, offering direct access to courses both in the estuary or in the North Sea.

Following a day of registration, equipment inspection and measurement on Wednesday, 24 August, racing will take place over the following four days. Nine races are scheduled, including one 'long coastal' of up to six hours duration (and carrying a 2x scoring co-efficient) and up to three shorter courses each day on either windward-leeward or coastal courses. One discard will be applied once five or more races have been sailed and two if the full nine race schedule is completed.

The fleet will be divided in three: IRC One for yachts with a TCC of 1.050+, IRC Two for those with a TCC of 1.000-1.050 and IRC Three for 0.900 to 1.000. To ensure accuracy of the rating and absolute fairness of the competition, entries must have an Endorsed IRC certificate, but to obtain one is straightforward and not costly using local IRC measurers and without the need for any complicated hull measurement or inclination requirements.

Once again the event aims to promote diversity with one extra crew permitted, over and above the number stated on a yacht's IRC certificate, if that yacht's crew includes at least two females or two youth of up to 25 years of age.

The Notice of Race for the 2022 IRC European Championship is published here

Team Malizia announces sailors for The Ocean Race 2022-23
Team Malizia today presented its sailing crew, with two new members, who will be with the team for The Ocean Race.

Skipper Boris Herrmann, 40, will be joined by co-skipper Will Harris, 28, who has been part of the team since 2019. Harris, from the UK, has joined Boris Herrmann in double-handed races like the Transat Jacques Vabre 2019 and has supported the team as a meteorologist and navigator and been with the technical team during the building of the new boat.

New to the team is Dutch sailor and co-skipper Rosalin Kuiper, 26. She has sailed 55.000 miles - a distance that equals circling the globe more than twice and has successfully participated in iconic races such as the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race and last year in The Ocean Race Europe. Before becoming a professional sailor, Rosalin Kuiper competed in athletics at a national level.

Joining them on board is Antoine Auriol, 37. The French/German videographer will document the racing and team activities as the onboard reporter. Antoine Auriol is not only a well-known television personality with several documentary series on French TV, but also a professional sportsman: He is a professional Kitesurfer and became Kiteboard Pro World Champion in 2010.

UK Etchells fleet at the RYS Cowes for the Sir Kenneth Preston Trophy
The UK Etchells fleet gathered for the scheduled three-day Sir Kenneth Preston trophy at the Royal Yacht Squadron over the May bank holiday weekend but in the end, because of light winds on day two and day three, racing activities were squeezed into the Saturday afternoon. It may not have been a lot of boat racing and even the Saturday required patience from the PRO whilst a sea breeze built, but it was fabulous racing, nonetheless.

Continuing where he left off in the Spring Cup two weeks ago (five bullets to win a six-race series) Lawrie Smith and his crew (Richard Parslow / Goncalo Almeida Ribeiro / Joao Matos Rosa) put their new David Heritage built boat in the water on Friday and immediately set about winning race one. Winning Etchells races is about doing lots of small things a tiny bit better than the competition and Smith continues to show his mastery of the sport. Long-time Etchells Sailor Shaun Frohlich took second after a good winter training season in Miami, while James Markby (David Bedford and Ben Paton) new to the class and in an old boat that they had not had much time to tune up, scored an excellent third after leading the race early on.

With three bullets Lawrie Smith took the overnight lead, and what would in the end become the regatta win, after both Sunday and Monday were drifted off.

Despite the truncated program the Etchells had a wonderful Sir Kenneth Preston Trophy regatta with dinner at the Royal Yacht Squadron on the Sunday night, and the fleet are back out for the Bedrock Trophy 14th/15th May being run by the Royal Southern Yacht Club.

Pro Sailing Tour
With just a week to go to the start of the Pro Sailing Tour season 2 (12 May-10 July), one of ocean racing's most exciting new competitions, a multinational fleet of seven foiling trimarans (the eighth will join in Brest) and 50 of the best offshore sailors will soon be converging on Bonifacio in Corsica for Episode 1 of the 4 Episode season.

An exciting new course, with inshore and offshore competition, will take the show from Corsica to Brittany via Cowes in the south of England.

This year, the Franco-British sailor is still the favourite: the team onboard Leyton has been busy over the winter optimising the multihull, they've added a central rudder and a new mast. Two new crew members, Pierre Pennec and Devan Le Bihan, will join the mixed crew that includes Elodie-Jane (Ocean Race with Team SCA and Turn the Tide, Tour de France) and Laurane Mettraux (Match racing, Sailing Arabia-The Tour, Tour de France) as part of the Leyton x Magenta Project programme launched last year.

Leyton is no longer the only mixed crew, Erwan Le Roux (4th last year) has joined forces with Audrey Ogereau and Mathilde Geron onboard Koesio, the crew also includes Yann Eliès.

18 Wild Cards and the names of the 138 Skippers registered for the Route du Rhum
On Sunday, November 6, there will be 138 sailors crossing the start line of the most famous single-handed transatlantic race. The 2022 edition of the Route du Rhum - Destination Guadeloupe is set to break the record for the number of competitors mustered to race a single-handed ocean race.

When the Notice of Race was published by OC Sport Pen Duick in July 2021 it said there would be 120 registered spots available for La Route du Rhum - Destination Guadeloupe. But the organizer of the event received 149 files in particular big numbers from the Imoca Class and the Multi and Mono Rhums. To try to satisfy as many sailors as possible but still guaranteeing compliance with logistical and safety requirements it was agreed to add 18 names as 'wild cards' to the 120 announced two weeks ago.

The Imocas had the longest waiting list, so she is logically the one who sees the most growth in her ranks. OC Sport Pen Duick awards 10 wild cards to the Imoca Class and thus allows Yannick Bestaven, Damien Seguin, Rodolphe Sepho and Alan Roura to become officially entered. So from 27 competitors, the fleet of 60-foot monohulls has grown to 37 and so in terms of size is just behind the 55 Class40s which remains the biggest class in the race.

Another division to welcome wild cards is the Rhum Multi which gains four additional entires in the form of some of the most emblematic sailors in the history of the race. Philippe Poupon will thus make his return to La Route du Rhum - Destination Guadeloupe 36 years after his victory in the second edition of the event. He will line up at the helm of Florence Arthaud's Pierre 1er, a boat which itself marked the history of the from the 1990 edition. It also won the Rhum twice! The double winner from the Imoca class, in 2006 and 2010, Roland Jourdain will return to the Transatlantic aboard a flax fiber catamaran. Another returnee is Marc Guillemot, second in the 2002 edition (in an Orma trimaran), who will also take a shot of Rhum at the helm of a catamaran he built himself. A Saint-Malo family intimately linked to the Route du Rhum - Destination Guadeloupe, the Escoffier clan is preparing to write a new page in its history as Loïc Escoffier is given the last wild cards in the Rhum Multi.

One Global Tomes Cup
After an absence of five months due to Government anti-epidemic measures which saw a stoppage of all sport, sailors were more than eager to return to racing, enjoying fresh air sailing in Hong Kong's Victoria Harbour as they competed in the One Global Tomes Cup on 30 April.

75 boats showed up on an overcast day with a moderate 10kts easterly breeze at the start of racing. The Pandora fleet was first to set off on the pursuit race at 1400hrs, followed by the Ruffians, Dragons and Flying Fifteen classes. Chasing them down to the projected target finish time of 1630hrs were the Impala, J/80 and Etchells fleets, followed by the Sportsboats and the eight Big Boats catching up from behind. Race Officer Gareth Williams set a start line just off Hung Hom and sent the fleet off on four laps between Tai Koo Shing and Hung Hom.

The wind weakened to 6kts in the middle of the race, so the Race Officer decided to shorten the course at the top mark. A valiant effort by Pandora Panopae saw her hold the lead until the third lap around Tai Koo Shing before being passed by the Dragons and Vx One. Dragon Zephyr crossed the finish line at 16:30:35 to take the win. Dragon Davinloong crossed the line almost two minutes later to take second place and Vx One Serendipity, kept up her strong performance to take third.

This regatta is the third of four constituent events that make up the Top Dog Trophy Series which is designed to identify the most successful Club boat competing across various courses and conditions. Patrick Pender 's Vx One Serendipity is now leading the Top Dog Trophy Series by almost 6 points ahead of Lowell Chang's Dragon Davinloong. This year's Top Dog will be determined after the final event of the series, the One Global HKRNVR Memorial Vase which will be held on 7 May. -- Vivian Ngan
