Calibration is (always) the key - B&G
B&G But to do it well means the tools have to be not only excellent but also easy to operate. Founded in 1956 by Major R.N. Gatehouse and Ronald Brookes it is no surprise that 65 years later B&G can claim more experience than most...

Sailing by the seat of your pants while using the Mk1 eyeball method of assessment is all very well but when the land, seabed or any other physical obstructions become tactical factors, there are more accurate and effective methods for making the right call. As a committed racer himself, B&G's product director Matt Eeles knows this well and offers some of his tips and tricks on how to get the best out of B&G instruments.

His starting point is calibration where he is quick to stress that before you start the process, the very first thing to do, (but one that is often forgotten), is to make sure that the log impeller is clean and not fouled. Inaccurate data here will simply multiply errors further down the line. From there, using the calibration function on the H5000 provides a simple guide to setting up the log and involves making three passes over a known distance.

Swan Tuscany Challenge hits the half-way point

Swan Tuscany Challenge Another five yachts took their places in the winner's circle today as the Swan Tuscany Challenge reached its half-way point with everything left to play for in a tightly compact and closely matched fleet.

The ClubSwan 50 class saw Marcus Brennecke's Hatari bounce back from a challenging opening day, which left her at the foot of the scoreboard, with a commanding win by over a minute in Thursday's first race ahead of overnight leader Earlybird and Andrea Masi's Ulika.

For Earlybird it was a day of variety, posting a 2-5-11 scoreline.

Meanwhile the ultra-competitive ClubSwan 36 race teams were equally spirited, and again with a succession of different winners in each race.

Haakon Lorentzen's Mamao and Mehmet Taki's Facing Future took the first two race wins respectively, ahead of Fra Martina and G-Spot in each race.

In the overall standings G-Spot retained her lead, having been briefly displaced by Facing Future, though only by the narrowest of margins, with Fra Martina's impressive run of results - 2-2-1 - securing third spot.

Star Eastern Hemisphere Championship

Star Eastern Hemisphere Naples and the Reale Yacht Club Canottieri offered their most beautiful conditions to the champions of the Star class, engaged from today in the Eastern Hemisphere Championship. It was a great first day in the Gulf of Naples. Clear skies, a ten knot Grecale wind, two clean races with regular starts: ideal for sailing.

The best of the day is the world champion Diego Negri, who, with crew Sergio Lambertenghi, won both races, taking immediately the head of the overall ranking. In second place another Italian world champion, Enrico Chieffi with Ferdinando Colaninno: the recent Italian Open champions bring home a fourth and a second place of the day. Third are Marin Misura and Tonko Barac on Croatel Two from Croatia (5-3).

"We are happy, we wanted to start strong, and it went well," comments Diego Negri. "The conditions were spectacular, we sailed at our best with gusts up to 16-18 knots. The second race was more complicated because there were streaks of air coming in from left and right, but we interpreted the pressure well and brought home the result. The parterre is of a high level, it was important to be in front".

On Naples and the Circolo Savoia: "Here I won my first Italian Laser championship - recalls Negri - the race course is similar to Liguria, where I live. Then the organization from the sea is super, the context is spectacular with the gulf, the beautiful city and the hospitality of the Circolo Savoia that has opened its doors with enthusiasm. On the way back, pizza party on the quay: "In fact nobody wanted to leave", jokes the world champion.

Tomorrow, from midday, the third and fourth race.

GBR Victorious in Italian 2K at Formia
After no less than 40 races team Serpentine representing GBR took the finals with a clean 2-0 over their closest rival the Dutch Match and Team Racing Association representing the Netherlands. Yacht Club Costa Smeralda presenting the host nation Italy took the third podium position.

With 40 sailors from across Europe this was a fantastic return to the joys of 2K Keelboat team racing. Our amazing hosts Circolo Nautico Caposele delivered an extraordinary programme both afloat and ashore. The PRO, Costanzo Villa, a seasoned 2K race officer delivered a record programme assisted by his excellent and very professional team.

As always with 2K the emphasis is on fun and great sportsmanship. Our parties are legendary, and apart from one broken table and some serious hangovers all enjoyed a typical Italian seafood feast and dance last night.

The RS21 fleet based in Naples was generously loaned, and proved quite outstanding in the team race role. Highly manoeuvrable and very safe to sail, there was nothing but compliments about the boats.

For the first time we allowed any mark contact between boats and marks… most took full advantage, and despite some initial reservations all approved of the change.

Our next event will in Cagliari, Sardinia and then we move to Newport RI where the New York Yacht Club will be hosting the Global Championships. -- Bruce Hebbert

Preparing a Classic Yacht for the Bermuda Race

Abigail Jesse Terry describes the challenge of putting his classic 1956 Alden ketch on the starting line. His story was first published by the Classic Yacht Owners Association.

I believe my work to prepare Abigail for this year's Newport Bermuda Race is a tribute to John Alden, a founding father of offshore racing. Alden won the Bermuda Race three times on one of his Malabars. I can see their lines on Abigail. Although she is a ketch, her hull is derived from the fishing schooner and her heritage is from offshore cruising. Alden last won the Bermuda Race in 1932 (a race that also included Olin Stephens on Dorade). It seems like 90 years later is a good time to try it again.

How long does it take to get my 65-year-old John Alden wood ketch ready to meet the requirements of one of the premier offshore racing events? Years. My journey started seven years ago by preparing the boat for offshore cruising. Over the first winter, three men replaced 4,000 old screws fastening the hull together. Then it was a focus on the rigging, both standing and running. By the spring, we had new sails that optimized the two-masted rig. We tested all that stuff sailing back and forth the Gulf of Maine from Southern New England to Maine and Nova Scotia.

The next winter, many more hours were spent working on the teak decks and replacing thru-hulls and plumbing. We then added some modern gear like electronics, new winches, and better blocks. We tested the new gear by participating in Classic Yacht races up and down the New England Coast.
