A flying return for the Semaine Olympique Francaise

Semaine Olympique Francaise The 53rd Semaine Olympique Francaise de Hyeres - TPM opened in classic Cote d'Azur style on Monday with the world's best rising to the strong winds through a field of 751 sailors from over 50 countries. It was like they had never been away.

After missing two years because of Covid, it was the most welcome and vivacious of returns for a venue and event that means so much to so many.Racing began at 11 in glorious sunshine, under cloudless skies and with strong offshore westerly winds of 15-20 knots. A choppy sea state, more so on the more the easterly courses with less protection from the bay and iles d'Or, as well as wind gusts between 25-30, kept everyone on their toes. Both the world and sailing have changed since the last Semaine Olympique Francaise de Hyeres in 2019. The 10 classes that will be contested in Marseille for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games were in Hyeres - which is just 50 miles west down the coast - for the first time. And it was flight time for the five foiling classes on show.

"We haven't seen the SOF for 3 years, it's great to have all the classes and it's a first regatta for the iQFOiL in Hyeres - we've already done Marseille!" Hélene Noesmoen, France's iQFOiL World and European Champion, said. Noesmoen confirmed her total dominance by winning all five of the races. Fellow Frenchwoman, Delphine Cousin, lies in second but it looked as if there were two separate races being run, Noesmoen and the rest.

The quality of competition throughout the fleets was immediately demonstrated at the start of the day in the men's ILCA 7, where Matthew Wearn, Australia's Olympic champion, and Philipp Buhl, Germany's 2020 World Champion, traded wins at the head of a lead group that dominated both races.

Clean sweep for Twin Soul B at Portofino Regate di Primavera
The Mediterranean maxi racing season got off to a start with the Portofino Regate di Primavera, that concluded today after a four day long weekend of racing. The picturesque Ligurian hamlet of Portofino has a long history of hosting maxi yacht events such as the Nespresso Cup and the Zegna Trophy. Portofino Regate di Primavera is the latest incarnation, organised and hosted by the Yacht Club Italiano, under the patronage of the Italian sailing federation (FIV) and in conjunction with the Comune di Portofino and the International Maxi Association.

Racing for the maxi yachts on the Gulf of Tigullio was hampered by weather that was more 'winter' than 'spring'. Despite the best efforts of the race committee including the International Maxi Association's Race Advisor Alfredo Ricci, racing was cancelled on the opening day due to no wind and then after a blustery Saturday night, it had to be cancelled on Sunday due to an excessive 'Libeccio' southwesterly, brought on by a nearby depression. Nonetheless three of the scheduled four races were held.

The maxis competing ranged in size from Francesco De Santis' Southern Wind 100 Morgana down to several 60 footers such as the two Mylius 60s Antonio Romeo's Jecalu and Franz Wilhelm Baruffaldi Preis's Manticore.

Even before the blustery Saturday night, the southwesterly on-shore wind was building during the day from 14-18 knots at start time, and the wave state with it. With two metre waves, three boats were forced to retire - Dario Castiglia's Hanse 630e Remax One, Jürg Schneider's Swan 65 Saida and the Grand Soleil 65 Indomabile Pensiero belonging to the YCI's Beppe Croce Sea School.

In this 26 mile race the pecking order for the remainder of the regatta was established with the immaculate Morgana leading the fleet home on the water, but with Twin Soul B, the all-black Mylius 80 campaigned by Luciano Gandini, winning under IRC corrected time.

Racing resumes in the International Maxi Association's Mediterranean Maxi Offshore Challenge with La Larga, the offshore race of Palmavela on 30 April and in the Caribbean, Antigua Sailing Week, the final event of the IMA's inaugural Caribbean Maxi Challenge. -- James Boyd / International Maxi Association

Tom Dolan 19th In La Solo Maitre Coq
A hard earned 12 th place in the final coastal race (Sunday) was small consolation for Irish solo racer Tom Dolan. Added to his 13 th from Saturday's light wind windward-leeward circuit Dolan, skipper of Smurfit Kappa-Kingspan finishes the first major race of his 2022 season, the Solo Maitre Coq in 19th place.

The solid short course results buoyed Dolan's mood slightly after last week's massively disappointing 330 miles long opening offshore race. He tore his spinnaker beyond repair midway down a long downwind leg and had to race on under small spinnaker. Desperately short of power he haemorrhaged places before picking up a few positions in light winds on the approach back to Les Sables d'Olonne. He was subsequently also penalized 10pts under the Figaro Beneteau 3 for having to swap to a replacement spinnaker for the remaining two races.

Dolan did finish with his best race today, largely holding his own around the 34 nautical miles coastal course off Les Sables d'Olonne. With good upwind speed he was 10 th at the last windward turning mark but lost a couple of boats on the final run due to a problem with his spinnaker halyard.

RIO100 Blows Away Previous N2E Record
Rio100 sails into Ensenada before dark. Photo by Lisa Bronitt. Click on image to enlarge.

RIO100 Ensenada, Mexico: Rio100, a custom Bakewell White and its crew, led by owner Manouch Moshayedi, has decimated the Newport to Ensenada International Yacht Race's elapsed time record for a monohull with an unofficial finish of 7:02:17, a remarkable 2.33.17 less than the previous record set by Steve Maheen's R/P 63 Aszhous in 2016.

The record also represents the first time a monohull has crossed the finish line here before sundown.

Not far aft in Rio100's wake, the rest of the Maxi fleet; some also positioned to break the old record, battled for top-of-the-class honors.

According to the YB tracker, multiple-time N2E winner Bill Gibbs' Wahoo led the entire fleet down the coast until being passed by Rio100 off San Diego - about the time its spinnaker blew out. They recovered and were south of the border before Ray Paul's 65 Botin Armetis passed by. Still, the 45-foot Schionning was the first ORCA-class boat to arrive, setting a new personal-best finish for team Wahoo.

Friday morning winds that blew directly from the west at 18 to 20 knots off the Balboa Pier, represented one of the windiest and bounciest starts in recent memory.

Yet Moshayedi called the record-breaking conditions "Fantastic; a straight shot down the coast, a great experience."

Included in the crew of 16 U.S. and New Zealand-based sailors were his son Sebastian and Peter Isler. The win gives Isler the exclusive distinction of being part of two record-holding crews. The multihull record set by the Mod70 Orion in 2016, and now the monohull record set by Rio100.

By 1 a.m. about a dozen boats had crossed the finish line. Diminishing overnight winds between 4 - 8 knots have slowed progress for some but are predicted to pick up mid-Saturday morning and usher in the remaining competitors.

Two-Handed Titans - Sevenstar Round Britain & Ireland Race
For the 2022 Sevenstar Round Britain & Ireland Race a record 15 teams are planning to take on the marathon IRC Two-Handed. Short-handed racing with the RORC has been booming in recent years with 84 teams competing in the 2021 RORC Season's Points Championship. The 1,800-mile Sevenstar Round Britain & Ireland Race is a hard task for a full-crew, let alone Two-Handed. Since IRC Two-Handed was introduced 12 years ago, 25 teams have started the race; only nine have finished.

Experienced Two-Handed skippers planning to race for 2022 include Richard Palmer's JPK 10.10 Jangada, 2020 RORC Yacht of the Year and overall winner of the RORC Transatlantic Race. 2012 RORC Yacht of the Year skipper Nick Martin will race his Sun Fast 3600 Diablo. The highly experienced Nigel de Quervain Colley will race his Sun Fast 3300 Fastrak XII and Sam White, 4th in IRC Two-Handed for the 2021 Rolex Fastnet, will race his latest boat, the JPK 1080 Mzungu!

Dee Caffari MBE and Shirley Robertson OBE will be racing together on a brand-new Sun Fast 3300 RockIT (GBR), which is due for launch in April. Shirley's strength is sailing the boat hard, keeping up the intensity of speed. Dee's strength is her knowledge and confidence of the course, possessing all the ingredients towards making the right decisions.

Dee Caffari has sailed around the world six times and was the first woman to sail single-handed and non-stop around the world in both directions. Dee has an equally impressive record in the Sevenstar Round Britain & Ireland Race, setting the Women's Monohull Course Record as skipper of IMOCA Aviva (2009), and then breaking her own record as part of Sam Davies's crew on VO65 Team SCA (2014 - 4 days 21 hours 00 mins 39 secs). Dee has completed the race four times.

Shirley Robertson made history becoming the first British woman to win an Olympic gold medal at consecutive games. In the last two years Shirley has raced Two-Handed with Henry Bomby on Sun Fast 3300 Swell. Shirley and Henry took Line Honours in the 2021 Rolex Fastnet Race for IRC Two-Handed and were second overall in a fleet of 56 boats, after time correction. Shirley has accumulated expert knowledge racing the Sun Fast 3300, but this will be her first Sevenstar Round Britain & Ireland Race. -- Trish Jenkins
