Moving Day at 57th Congressional Cup: Canfield, Williams, Berntsson & Poole Advance
Taylor Canfield (USA), Ian Williams (GBR), Johnie Berntsson (SWE) and Chris Poole (USA) have advanced to the semifinal stage in the 57th Congressional Cup, after a dicey day of sailing in winds grazing the top range for the Catalina 37 fleet. Ten of the world's top-ranked match racing teams battled 20 knots of wind and bloodthirsty rivals for a chance at the Crimson Blazer at Long Beach Yacht Club in this five-day series.

None of the qualifiers are strangers to Congressional Cup's elite; past winners Canfield, Williams and Berntsson each already have in their closets an iconic Crimson Blazer: yacht racing's equivalent to The Masters' green jacket. And Poole, who qualified for the semifinals in 2021, has tasted blood. Concluding races tomorrow and Saturday will prove to be thrilling for competitors, and spectators as well as they watch from the Belmont Veterans Memorial Pier.

There was never any doubt five-time Congressional Cup winner and defending champion Canfield would qualify. Pedigree and poise have kept his Team Stars+Stripes at the top of the leaderboard over the past three days of exhilarating racing. Likewise Williams, a four-time Congressional Cup victor and long-time rival, quickly made known his intentions, with his Team Gladstone's Long Beach claiming a spot on the top of roster despite a three-year absence from Congressional Cup racing.

But it came down to the wire for the final two berths, with four gifted skippers hungry for those spots: Berntsson, Poole, Jeppe Borch (DEN) and Emil Kjaer (DEN).

Mediterranean maxi season to start tomorrow at the Portofino Regate di Primavera
The Mediterranean maxi season gets underway tomorrow with the opening day of racing at the Portofino Regate di Primavera taking place out of the picturesque Ligurian hamlet where the Yacht Club Italiano has a clubhouse. The event is organised by the Yacht Club Italiano, under the patronage of the Italian sailing federation (FIV) and in conjunction with the Comune di Portofino and the International Maxi Association.

Racing at Portofino Regate di Primavera takes over the next four days on the Gulf of Tigullio. 12 maxi yachts, currently moored in Portofino or in the nearby marina at Santa Margherita Ligure, are participating. The longest is the Reichel/Pugh - Nauta designed Southern Wind 100 Morgana on which Brazilian five time Olympic medallist and Volvo Ocean Race winner Torben Grael is calling tactics. At the smaller end are several 60 footers such as the heavily campaigned Mylius 60 Manticore, belonging to Franz Wilhelm Baruffaldi Preis.

The biggest manufacturer turn-out are the five maxis from Mylius Yachts, led by the two Mylius 80s, Primadonna and Twin Soul B, the latter campaigned by Mylius Yachts’ President Luciano Gandini. Going into this event the immaculate black-hulled Twin Soul B is perhaps the form boat, having had a highly successful season in 2021, both inshore and offshore. This saw them achieve outright victory in the 151 Miglia-Trophy Cetilar’s maxi class and come close to winning their class at the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup.

In addition to Twin Soul B, also rated highly in the competitive mix will be Adriano Calvini's FY61 Itacentodue, outright winner of last year’s Rolex Giraglia, when she was campaigned by a young crew from the Yacht Club Italiano, and the Mylius 65FD Oscar 3 of Aldo Parisotto, a leading Italian interior designer with close ties to the Mylius yard.

The first race is scheduled for tomorrow at 1100 CEST with racing continuing daily until Monday when it will conclude with an awards ceremony, including a trophy for the ‘best placed IMA member’ in the Racer-Cruiser class. -- James Boyd

Making the unbelievable believable - Teufelberger
Teufelberger Today's top-end lines from Teufelberger deliver performance vs weight qualities that even 10-15 years ago the typical racing sailor would have found hard to believe. But believe it they should...

What do you do when even top-grade Dyneema has too much stretch to keep your luff straight? You ask a ropemaker for something even better. Sometimes, though, it works the other way round. Teufelberger, the parent company of Robline and New England Ropes, has a very proactive approach to product development and puts great emphasis on forging close relationships with its most demanding users - including some of the world's best sailors - to drive its R&D.

Ideas for new products come from conversations with sailors about the shortcomings of existing equipment. These are then fed back to the ropemaker's engineers, who develop cordage for 20 different market sectors. Often, a solution already exists in house. Crane ropes, Alpine cableways and yacht halyards, for example, have a lot in common so technology and know-how are often transferred between them.

HYPR has entered the Cape2Rio Race 2023

HYPR Royal Cape Yacht Club (RCYC) and Iate Club do Rio de Janeiro (ICRJ) take pleasure in announcing this marque race entry; HYPR (ex-Camper, ex-Warrior) the much modified and optimised racing machine has her sights firmly set on the Monohull record that has stood the test of time since the 2014 edition of the race. What is fitting is that HYPR and Monohull Race Record holder Maserati (ex - E3) are both built to the same exiting VO70 Rule, pedigree racing machines purpose built to break records and take on any ocean.

Owner Kees Bos and skipper Jens Lindner see the 10d, 11h, 29m 57s record as the goal to start off the 2023 racing season for HYPR. The yacht is sailed by a core racing crew and provides opportunities for passionate yachtspersons to join their team, creating a working compliment of professional and Corinthian sailors at the highest level. The boat will be delivered on her own bottom to Cape Town, another great offshore opportunity for sailors to gain miles and experience. This past Caribbean season has seen some exciting and spectacular racing for the HYPR crew; RORC C600 and the Heineken Regatta St Maarten. The boat has now returned to Europe to prepare for the 2022 North Sea and Mediterranean season.

To enquire about racing on board HYPR in the cape2riorace.com should contact LV Yachting

When asked about his motivation for entering the C2R2023, Kees had the following to say: "We are very excited to join this iconic race and the opportunity to race in the South Atlantic."

C2R2023 Race Director Anthony Spillebeen added: "It has been our ambition from the day we announced Cape2Rio Race 2023 to attract as many of the ocean greyhounds past and present that participate in all the great regattas of the world. Having the likes of HYPR and Black Pearl on our start line is significant. The Cape2Rio Race has a long line of pedigreed participants and illustrious winners and we hope that this entry by HYPR will galvanise other high-profile boats to visit our shores and race to Rio de Janeiro on 2 January 2023."

Registration Open for the 2022 Rolex Middle Sea Race
The Royal Malta Yacht Club (RMYC) is pleased to confirm that the Notice of Race for 43rd Rolex Middle Sea Race is available online and yachts may already register their participation. Last year's race attracted 114 yachts, a remarkable achievement given the ongoing backdrop of a global pandemic. This year looks no less difficult with the situation in the Ukraine creating further uncertainty, but the RMYC is hopeful another impressive fleet will gather. The 2022 race is scheduled to start on Saturday, 22 October 2022.

In issuing this release, the RMYC acknowledges the unfortunate controversy surrounding the implementation of the alternative finish line for safety reasons, and the impact on the overall results of the 42nd Rolex Middle Sea Race. Following an internal review, the RMYC has taken and continues to take steps to ensure the rules and regulations surrounding the 43rd race are fit for purpose. In parallel with the internal review, the club has sought feedback from competitors and guidance from the RMYC's longstanding race partners, including the Royal Ocean Racing Club (RORC).

As a result of these actions, the Race Organisation has been strengthened, with the most significant change comprising the appointment of Chris Stone, the RORC's Racing Manager, as Race Director. A proven professional sailing administrator, he has 20 years' experience managing events such as the Rolex Fastnet Race, RORC Caribbean 600, the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, and Volvo Ocean Race and Clipper Round the World stopovers.

Notice of Race

Tour de Force
Watching from afar and throughout the pandemic, I've been willing the World Match Racing Tour every success. It's been a hard watch as global borders have closed on zealous policy and sponsors have retreated meaning events of the past two years got cancelled on a whim. But here's the thing: match racing is arguably more relevant today than it ever was and this is a Tour that deserves to keep on motoring. The very fact that it is back and flourishing is testament to all those involved who never said die. Chapeau to the believers. They are back with a bang.

My view is that the best days for the World Match Racing Tour are still ahead and that as soon as the AC & SailGP circuits standardise, as they will, the edge for the sailors will be found back in non-foilers dicing and duking just inches apart and honing that extra 1% back on the Tour. It's unquestionable and absolutely no secret to the coaches of the top teams on the glamour circuits that a lot of the pros could do with a brush up and a dust-down on the World Match Racing Tour. And that's not just the helms - the crews could well benefit too from getting a few events under their muscle belts and time out of the gym. Nothing better than a high intensity work-out actually on the water. As I say, better days ahead.

Paul Meilhat joins The Ocean Race with new Verdier-designed IMOCA

Biotherm French skipper Paul Meilhat will fulfil a lifelong dream in January 2023 when he leads Biotherm across the starting line of The Ocean Race on the waters off Alicante, Spain.

Meilhat and his team will be racing one of the newest IMOCA boats in the fleet, a Verdier design that is expected to compete for the title in The Ocean Race 2022-23, before Meilhat will go on to sail in the next edition of the single-handed Vendee Globe.

Meilhat is well known for his ability competing short-handed - he is a winner of the Route du Rhum and the Fastnet Race as well as being the IMOCA GLOBE SERIES champion in 2021 - but he also has experience and an ambition to race in a crewed format and says the two disciplines complement each other.

The new Biotherm is expected to be launched in August and will compete in the Route de Rhum this autumn before returning to Alicante, Spain for the start of The Ocean Race on 15 January 2023..

"It's fantastic to have Paul and his Biotherm team confirm they will join The Ocean Race," said Johan Salen, the Managing Director of The Ocean Race. "Paul was among the first IMOCA skippers to signal his ambition and intention to compete and we know he worked very hard over the past three years to bring this project to the start line. We're looking forward to seeing him race."

Paul Meilhat's Biotherm joins skipper Boris Herrmann's Team Malizia and skipper Charlie Enright's 11th Hour Racing Team as confirmed IMOCA campaigns for The Ocean Race 2022-23.

Pro Sailing Tour: season 2022 course announcement

Launchings
Clak 40 Multiplast embarked on their Class40 programme at the end of 2020 when they teamed up with designers VPLP to build a new 40 footer called Clak 40. These are the smallest racing monohull ever built by the yard which was originally founded by Gilles Ollier in 1981. "The project appealed to us because the class is very dynamic, it was also a change of economic model for us", explains Yann Penfornis, the Managing Director of Multiplast. Unlike custom "one offs", on which the racer and/or his partner finance the mould which is very often used to then make only one or two boats - it is Multiplast which has taken the risk this time investing in tooling so they can go on to create a small series of boats.

After the first one for Andrea Fornaro, a second Clak 40 was launched in early October 2021 for Nicolas d'Estais, a month before the start of the Transat Jacques Vabre. With Erwan Le Draoulec at his side, d'Estais finished 13th into Fort-de-France and now attacking this 2022 season on the 1000 Milles des Sables in April with a fine 6th place which really satisfied the skipper of HappyVore.

Their progress started last winter with a return to the Multiplast yard to save a few precious kilos, the boat having proved to be above the minimum weight (4,580 kilos) when it left. "The new Class40s are small Imocas, rather than big Minis," analyzes Yann Penfornis. "The sides are important, the shapes tightly defined and at high speeds the structure must therefore be very tight. Building a robust boat to minimum displacement is a challenge."

This slimming diet was also an opportunity to rework the sheer line in the forward area.

With the delivery of the fourth boat of this VPLP design this summer set for William Mathelin-Moreaux, a total of four Clak 40s will start the Route du Rhum on 6 November.

The first Infiniti 52 Tulikettu has been undergoing sea trials in the Solent, following delivery to her new Finnish owner Arto Linnervuo, in anticipation of a busy offshore racing program. Already during her first sea trials she has hit 28+ knots, with more than 30 anticipated and she has impressed her crew with her easy speed and bow-out attitude.

Designed by Hugh Welbourn, the Infiniti 52 is the first foil assisted high performance/racing yacht developed for semi-custom production. A brand new entry to the race boat market's busy 52ft sector, it is unique in several ways. Firstly it is one of the few designed from the outset specifically to be campaigned offshore, rather than inshore windward-leeward racing. But most significantly it is the only 52 fitted with a Dynamic Stability Systems (DSS) retracting lateral foil, the same technology as used on Canova, Sailing Yacht of the Year at the 2020 Superyachts Award and the Quant 23, the 2016 European Yacht of Year.

To recap DSS's benefits: when the foil is deployed just beneath the water to leeward, it provides 'righting moment on demand'; providing more lift the faster boat (and foil) pass through the water, just like adding crew weight to the rail or ballast to the keel. The net result is a significant speed boost.

The Infiniti 52's DSS foil isn't designed to make the boat fly, but it does significantly reduce displacement and drag, again increasing speed.

Dehler continues to renew its range after the Dehler 38 SQ in 2020 (which replaced the previous model launched in 2013). It is now the largest model in its fleet that has been reborn, the Dehler 46 SQ, whose previous model dated from 2015. The decoration and lighting have been redesigned, and changes have been integrated into the cockpit and the rigging.

Dehler 46 SQ

The Dehler 46 SQ (Speed & Quality) follows the launch in 2020 of the Dehler 38 SQ, sailboats intended for performance. This new model replaces the previous version of the 14.94m long (overall) sailboat launched in 2015 and also comes out of the sketchbooks of Judel/Vrolijk & co, like its "little" brother.

In the cockpit, the helm stations now benefit from optional footrests to ensure a more comfortable and safe position, especially upwind. The cockpit is clearer with the integration of storage for the halyards. When folded they are completely flush in the deck. The new bathing platform is lighter and easier to use with folding bathing ladder and handrails. Remote deployment is offered as an option. The optional arch offers both an integrated sprayhood , but also a clew point for the mainsail by replacing the trolley positioned in the cockpit.

Other options allow you to customize your sailboat: more sporty steering wheels, electric winches or even roof sunbathing.

The bowsprit with underbarb is now offered as standard and incorporates the davit. It offers a further back tack for the gennaker, Code 0 or asymmetric spinnaker. With the new Facnor Flatdeck furler, the drum is lower to increase the sail area. Another novelty, it is now possible to rig a staysail. Performance options can be chosen to increase the sailboat's potential: "competition" rudder and keel , larger carbon mast and high performance Quantum sails. -- Chloe Torterat
