This will be the first regatta of the Royal Southern Summer Series, consisting of four events from May to September. The regattas are open to entry for non-members and members alike with social events at the Royal Southern's extensive clubhouse on the Hamble River. Over 80 teams are expected for each regatta with hundreds of sailors taking part. Classes already signed up include J/70, SB20, Cape 31, HP30, J/111, and IRC Classes.

Ian Atkin's will be racing in the big boat IRC Class with his new charge, the GP42 Dark'n'Stormy. Ian has been racing with the Royal Southern for over 20 years in a huge variety of boats. "The Summer Series is a time-served successful formula and there is a big incentive to do them all, but each regatta is a proper championship in its own right," commented Ian Atkins. "Dark 'n' Stormy is a thrilling boat to race, and there are about ten boats of similar capabilities racing in The Solent, we are looking forward to a superb season of racing."

The North Sails May Regatta will have prizes from the sailmakers and coaching tips from the professionals. The North Sails May Regatta is the first of the Summer Series

HP30 Class manager Joe Hall expects a bumper entry of 11 teams for the North Sails May Regatta, including five Far East 28s and Four Farr 280s. Royal Southern member Alain Waha was the first HP30 to enter with his Far East 28 GoWest - COGITAL. One design classes have always been a feature of the Royal Southern Summer Series. The pocket-rocket Cape 31 UK Class is based in Hamble. Five or more Cape 31s are expected to be competing in the North Sails May Regatta. The SB20 Class will be in action for the North Sails May Regatta, which will be their Southern Champs and the first round of the SB20 UK Series. -- Louay Habib

Modern Materials Maintain Classic Look with help from BSI Rigging
BSI Whitehawk, built in 1978, and designed by Bruce King, this classic racing yacht at 32m has undergone a major refit and is back on the water competing in classic yacht racing regattas. The brief was clear; Whitehawk must maintain her original features whilst utilising current day materials.

Working closely together, BSI Rigging and Offshore Spars have achieved the owner's wishes. Offshore Spars replaced the original mast and boom with a new Caron Fibre spar package. Although looking at it you would say it was made in wood, due to its beautiful faux wood paint finish.

Attention to detail was important, and BSI Rigging manufactured a rod rigging package, but aligning with the brief, research and development were carried out to match the finish to the original style. Manufacturing sample fittings in bronze anodised finish to step away from the highly polished Nitronic and stainless finish most commonly seen. When a match was established, selected rigging hardware came with the approved bronze anodising and copper clad stainless to maintain the characteristics of the original build. Whitehawk is a fine example of using modern materials to maintain its classic look whilst improving performance.

Great British Sailing Challenge
The first Cheddar Chase, sponsored by Cheddar Ales was hosted by Bristol Corinthian Yacht Club on 9th and 10th April. The first time this event has been held at Cheddar Reservoir, it also marked the second round of the Great British Sailing Challenge 2022.

Despite the rocketing fuel prices, the event attracted visitors from as far afield as Wilsonian Sailing Club, Rickmansworth, and Royal Lymington as well as local sailors from Chew Valley Lake Sailing Club and a number of home-based boats. Classes represented included National 18, Alto, Vortex, RS200, RS300, Phantom, Laser, Solo, Enterprise and Byte.

The final overall results saw John Teague from BCYC in the RS300 holding firmly onto first place overall, with Vortex sailor Jonathon Carter from Rickmansworth SC second, Alto sailors Timothy Kift and Jo Wickens third, with Ollie Houseman, Jeremy Vines and Steve Watton in National 18 fourth, BCYC's Laser sailor John Lapes 5th and Nigel and Andy Bird in their RS200 sixth. The prizes were provided by local popular brewery Cheddar Ales. -- Alice Driscoll

Banque Populaire: Nicolas Lunven Replaces Clarisse Cremer For The Spring Races
From one adventure to another. A year after completing the Vendee Globe, Clarisse Cremer, who is expecting a happy event for the end of the year, gives up her place to Nicolas Lunven for the first two races of the season scheduled aboard the IMOCA Banque Populaire (ex Apicil Group). A logical choice for this particularly experienced skipper. He will therefore be at the start of the Guyader Bermudes 1000 Race on May 8 and the Vendee-Arctic-Les Sables on June 12.

At 39, the native of Vannes is an experienced skipper on many supports. Double winner of the Solitaire du Figaro (2009, 2017), participant in two Volvo Ocean Races, Nicolas has had several experiences in IMOCA alongside Morgan Lagravière, Kevin Escoffier and Samantha Davies. on many supports. Double winner of the Solitaire du Figaro (2009, 2017), participant in two Volvo Ocean Races, Nicolas has had several experiences in alongside Morgan Lagravière, Kevin Escoffier and Samantha Davies.

This is the first time he will compete in a solo race aboard these monohulls. "It's a challenge that promises to be exciting," he says. I have the chance to take it up with a prestigious offshore racing team and I was touched by their welcome". Nicolas has a common history with Banque Populaire: he took part in the Transat AG2R in 2000 in the colors of the Team with Jeanne Gregoire.

Stockholm International Team Race Regatta
We are pleased to announce that the Stockholm International Team Race Regatta 2022, the biggest event of the year for Gamla Stans Yacht Sällskap, after a two-year break, will now take place between 26 and 29 May in our beautiful capital.

The popular J/80 regatta has attracted teams from the US as well as from England and Italy. New York Yacht Club, Royal Thames Yacht Club, Newport Harbor Yacht Club, The Royal Yacht Squadron, Yacht Club Costa Smeralda and Gamla Stans Yacht Sällskap will this year compete for the coveted GSYS Team Race Cup.

The regatta, which takes place right in the centre of Stockholm, close to the Royal Palace as well as Kastellholmen, where the Swedish Armed Forces' war flag is raised and lowered every day, is proof of the fantastic sailing opportunities that the Swedish capital offers. We hope that the regatta again this year, in addition to our competing teams, also will attract a large audience of both Stockholmers and visitors.

This Wednesday: Q&A Live Call with Nik Burfoot
Nik Burfoot pioneered a new style of hiking that powered him towards becoming one of the dominant forces in the Laser during the 1990s. Competing against the likes of Robert Scheidt and Ben Ainslie, the Kiwi sailor was fourth at the Laser Worlds in 1993 before winning the world title in 1994. He narrowly missed out to Scheidt in 1995 and 1997, finishing runner-up to the Brazilian.

Nik will share the story of how and why he altered his hiking style for the Olympic one-design class and the speed and tactical advantage it gave him on the race course.

If you're familiar with the principles of Road To Gold, you'll understand where Nik is coming from with his honest self-analysis. The clean and the dirty side of the vase. This promises to be a very frank and revealing conversation with one of the best Lasers of his generation.

It's free to get live access to the call, all you need to do is sign up here at www.roadtogold.net. It takes less than 30 seconds.

We'll give you a heads-up on our Facebook Group too, see details below.

Jean-Luc Denechau: "France Has The Potential To Be In The Hunt In Almost All Olympic Classes"
The French Olympic Sailing Week of Hyeres-Toulon Provence Mediterranee starts on April 23. And so it is a good opportunity for Tip & Shaft to catch up with the President of the FFV, the French Sailing Federation, Jean-Luc Denechau and discuss the Paris 2024 Games, the America's Cup, the general dynamism of offshore and ocean racing as well as the conflict between Francois Gabart and the Ultim 32/23 class.

So Jean-Luc how is the French Olympic Week looking?
Well were are happy to see it all happening again, because it has been two years since we were last able to organize it. We are expecting a big participation, around 700 competitors. And there will be a full French team, plus the youth team. So it will allow us to validate the work done over this last winter and to move forward towards the focal points of the season which are the world and European championships of each class. The idea is not to just about making a podium at all costs, we are in part of an Olympic preparation.

How are things going on the Marseille side? We are still waiting for a first test, when is it planned?
All the French teams are based in Marseille in the provisional France centre, since we have left the old one which has been knocked down, we are at the foundations stage of the new centre. We wanted to organize a test-event this year, but the city hall was not ready to receive the competitors, so we are not doing it. Today, the Cojo (French Olympic Committee) has the ambition to organize one in the summer of 2023 but even then the work will not be finished, since there is talk of delivery in the Autumn of 2023.

What is the overall budget of the Olympic campaign for the French team?
We are in the same area as in the previous ones, namely, depending on the year, between 2 and 2.5 million euros per year.

A little over two years out from the Games, what are the reasonable objectives of the French team? And how many medals might you dream of winning in Marseille?
The objective I have set is to do better than in Tokyo, where we had three medals. We organized ourselves, staffed and programmed to get that. Beyond that I don't want to set a precise number of medals, but we do have the potential to be in the hunt in almost all the classes.

The Lake
APYC 150 Years on the Lake Not many sporting clubs survive for 150 years. Albert Park Yacht Club reached its sesquicentennial in 2022, making it one of the oldest yacht clubs in Australia.

This is a testament to sound stewardship, a long commitment to welcoming and nurturing junior sailors and dinghy sailing as a sport and recreation. Only Port Phillip YC was founded earlier in 1853 becoming Victoria Yacht Club in the 1870's and RYCV from 1885.

To celebrate, the Club has just published 'APYC 150 Years on the Lake' by Chris Davey. This engaging book has built on previous APYC histories and benefits from the author's academic background and experience as Past Commodore. It is far more than a story of club activities and events. From the 1870's growth of a gold rush city, the uncertainty of land and water politics and renewal after two wars, the Club history parallels the progress and development of Melbourne itself.

The pictures and layout have been edited by Mark Ashkenasy, an APYC member and professional photographer. Mark has built a pictorial essay, editing variable quality prints, photos and slides from collections and archives then adding his own superb photos of the lake. Mark had experience of 'the long hard beat' of book production after working with Bert Ferris, shaping his second sailing history, 'RMYS 140 Years on Port Phillip' published in 2017.

Peter Lucas
Peter Lucas Peter Lucas of Portchester House, Portchester, passed away on 24 March 2022 following a short but courageous battle with cancer.

Peter, who was 81, was head of the family sailmaking business W G Lucas & Son and was a well respected and loved character around Old Portsmouth and Portchester. Together with his wife, Sue, he can be credited with diversifying W G Lucas & Son from a traditional sail and tent making business to a world renowned specialist in tensile fabric structures, with projects ranging from the British Pavilion at Expo 1992 to shading for rooftop bars of world class restaurants.

During his career, he chaired the Association of British Sailmakers and was a founder member the British Federation (now British Marine). He was a Life Member of the RYA - Royal Yachting Association.

A keen and talented yachtsman, Peter spent as much time as possible on the water. He started racing in years in an Albacore, then later International 14 progressing to a Ballad, Contessa 32 and then a J24 and was proud to have completed (and won) almost all major races in his field on the British racing circuit.

He was thrilled to have crossed the Atlantic with his good friends, Sir Robin Knox Johnston and the late Sir Peter Blake in the catamaran "Enza", which was then rated as the world's largest racing sailboat. He believed this to be a trip of a lifetime.

Ever the entertainer, he kept a beautiful house and garden which he enjoyed showing off at every opportunity, generally with a glass of red wine and cigar in hand. He was a loving husband and father and is survived by Sue and his children Timothy, James, Joanna and Dominique.

A Memorial Service will be held at St Mary's Church, Portchester, on Friday, April 22 at 12pm.

The family ask that any donation in his name be made to the RNLI or Rowan's Hospice.
