1000 Miles des Sables: A suspenseful end of the race for the Class40s
While the final classification of the Ocean Fifty of this 2nd edition of the 1000 Miles des Sables is now known, the fight continues within the Class40 fleet. In the lead since passing the La Coruna waypoint on Monday morning, Corentin Douguet (Queguiner - Innoveo) continues to lead the dance but the 110 miles that remain to be covered to reach Les Sables d'Olonne may well give him some thread. hard… and a few cold sweats. In question, a weather for the less delicate with weak and erratic winds which could largely reshuffle the cards between now and the crossing of the finish line. The test of patience is on.

Current top ten Class 40
1. Corentin Douguet 972.9 to finish
2. Ian Lipinski - 0.756 nm to leader
3. Axel Trehin - 6.4 nm
4. Simon Koster - 7.3 nm
5. Nicolas d'Estais - 18.7 nm
6. Antoine Magre - 22.1 nm
7. Vincent Lancien - 53.4 nm
8. Keni Piperol - 91.6 nm
9. Emmanuel Le Roch - 94.7 nm
10. Martin Louchart - 107.1 nm

Fight for Ficker Cup begins April 14 at Long Beach Yacht Club
Long Beach, California: Blustery winds are expected to make way to idyllic conditions for the Ficker Cup Regatta hosted by Long Beach Yacht Club. Racing for the prestigious Ficker Cup trophy, and a shot at a berth in the Congressional Cup, begins tomorrow April 14 through Saturday April 16 on the Congressional Cup Stadium racecourse off the Veterans Memorial Belmont Pier.

Mild, sunny conditions and 10 to 15 knot breezes are forecast for the eight teams competing from around the nation and across the seas, in this World Match Racing Tour Grade 2 qualifier event.

Leading the pack is 2021 Ficker Cup winner Emil Kjaer (DEN), plus Jeffrey Petersen (USA) and David Wood (USA) - all of whom advanced to compete in the Congressional Cup last year. Also returning are Peter Holz (USA) and Dave Perry (USA), while Jeppe Borch (DEN), Christopher Weis (USA) and Anna Ostling (SWE) make their Ficker Cup debut.

Three days of heated match racing will take place starting at 1130AM daily with excellent viewing from the Belmont Pier. There spectators can watch the thrilling play-by-play as the teams duel on the water, dazzling and defying their rivals in the hunt for points, and a scramble up the leaderboard. The top four finishers will then battle it out to see who's name will be etched on the Ficker Cup trophy. And then the victor and runner-up will advance to the Congressional Cup, to be held April 19 to 23.

The regatta was established by Long Beach Yacht Club to honor Bill Ficker, a renowned yachtsman, Star Class World Champion, and America's Cup and Congressional Cup victor. Winning the Ficker Cup is a both an honor, and a portent of good things to come.

Mirabaud Yacht Racing Image Award 2022
Last year's winning photo by Loic Venance. Click on image to enlarge.

Mirabaud Yacht Racing Image Award Initiated in 2010, the world's leading photo competition dedicated to competitive sailing is proud to launch its 13th edition. Professional photographers from all over the world are invited to submit their best image, taken between October 5, 2021 and October 9, 2022. The 80 best images selected by the international jury will be published on the event website on October 20 and the winners celebrated on November 21. Full rules available here.

A new voting system has been developed for the public, which is no longer based on Facebook as previously. Moreover, the rules have been modified at the request of many photographers who insisted on the fact that only a small percentage of photos of offshore regattas (Vendee Globe, The Ocean Race, Fastnet Race, Ultime Class...) are taken during the regattas. The same is true for most dinghy pictures: photographers have to stay away from the competitors, which strongly limits their creativity. Consequently, the rules revert to their original formula, which stipulates that "photos must reflect the spirit of regatta and may have been taken at any time".

Last year, 126 photographers representing 24 nationalities submitted an image for the Mirabaud Yacht Racing Image award. The winner was French photographer Loic Venance of AFP. More than 15,000 people voted for their favorite image, while 235,000 pages were viewed on the event's website.

Female athletes to race with Switzerland SailGP Team
Five of Switzerland's top female athletes will join the Switzerland SailGP Team throughout Season 3. They will form part of the overall Swiss team and take part in training and racing throughout the season alongside the core team of Sebastien Schneiter (Driver), Stuart Bithell (Wing Trimmer), Jason Saunders (Flight Controller) and Grinders, Richard Mason (GBR), Eliot Merceron (SUI) and Julien Rolaz (SUI).

Following high interest from female athletes across the country, sisters Elodie and Laurane Mettraux, Maja Siegenthaler, Maud Jayet and Nathalie Brugger were selected to join SailGP SUI for trials during a training camp in Lagos, Portugal, earlier this year.

The talented athletes who hail from competitive racing backgrounds - from the Olympic Games to inshore and offshore regattas - will race with the team across the Season 3 championship, spanning 2022-2023.

SailGP introduced the Women's Pathway at the start of Season 2, as part of its better sport strategy to promote inclusion, inspire change and provide opportunities across all levels of the sport. Ten international teams will compete in the purpose-led global racing league this season, each racing with six crew onboard including one female athlete in both a standard and light-wind configuration.

Switzerland SailGP Team will first sail its F50 race boat mid-April in Bermuda.

Black Star Sailing: New Team Joins The 44Cup
Switzerland's Black Star Sailing Team has confirmed it will join the 44Cup for the second event of the 2022 season in Cascais, Portugal, over 11-15 May.

Led by passionate amateur sailor Christian Zuerrer, Black Star Sailing Team will be running their 44Cup program alongside their successful GC32 Racing Tour campaign, in which they finished third overall in 2021. In Cascais, the team will be racing on the class's own RC44, which is available for potential owners to try, before their new boat, which only came out of the factory last week, is ready to race.

Some old and new faces will join Black Star Sailing's crew. RC44 veteran, New Zealand's Cameron Dunn, will be calling tactics and guiding the new team through the challenges of racing their lively, high performance yacht against the fleet of eight other RC44 one designs and their highly experienced, competitive crews. Dunn brings with him onto the team fellow Kiwi, Emirates Team New Zealand grinder Guy Endean and experienced RC44 pitman Simon Johnson, from Ireland.

Transferring over from Black Star Sailing's GC32 crew will be mainsail trimmer Flavio Marazzi, trimmer Will Alloway and Swiss sailors, offside trimmer Gregoire Siegwart and bowman Nick Zeltner.

Founded in 2019, Black Star Sailing Team initially set out as a campaign to promote amateur sailors.

2023 Ocean Globe Race
The 2023 Ocean Globe Race (OGR) launched in 2019, is entering its final phase of development, pushed along with pure passion and commitment from its 23 paid up entrants. This crewed race around the world, with sextants and paper charts in the spirit of the original 1973 Whitbread Race, continues to attract strong interest from sailors.

Among the final developments is the cancellation of the "Classic Challenge", originally announced six months after the OGR was launched. This Class was added to the three Retro Classes due to strong lobbying from Whitbread 60, Volvo 60 and Maxi-Yacht owners wanting to enter. The organizer finally agreed and a wider range of yachts related to the golden years of the Whitbread were invited.

In the first six months eight expressions of interest were received from some exciting teams, however, two years later, no entry deposits had been received.

"We did not want this Class to just fade away and we were worried about getting just two or three entries six months before the start, which would never work, so we set a deadline". Said OGR Race founder Don McIntyre "We needed four entries by the end of January 2022. In the end we did receive an interesting proposal of four entries, but they were all from one company and it did not feel right."

Discussions with potential Start/Finish ports and stop-overs have been challenging due to COVID pressures, and a few other around the world races happening at the same time. Following feedback from ports, the OGR fleet is now reduced to 30 yachts from all three retro classes to simplify logistics. 30 yachts between 48 and 76 feet takes up a bit of space!

The OGR is the biggest fully crewed round the world race in decades, and now there are now only seven entries left to fill.
