Strong winds at the 22nd Torbole Europa Meeting: Scandinavian domination
Torbole, Lake Garda, Italy: The wait of two years for the return of the Torbole Europa Meeting was rewarded with eight races and beautiful, tough wind conditions, which came after Saturday's bad weather and strong winds from the north, both on Sunday and Monday with sunshine, clear skies and a powerful southerly wind that always blew between 18 and over 20 knots. At the Circolo Vela Torbole, with the collaboration of the Italian Sailing Federation and the Garda Trentino Vela Consortium for the management of the race course with its electric buoys, the 22nd edition of one of the best-known regattas dedicated to the Europa class (formerly the women's Olympic class before the Laser Radial) highlighted the best trained and youngest crews, more than half of the 170 participants.

In terms of results, the 22nd Torbole Europa Meeting saw the dominance of Denmark in the top 15, although the men's victory went to Lars Johan Brodtkorb of Norway, who literally triumphed with five partial victories, two seconds and an eleventh entry. Eight points behind, in second place, the Dane Oscar Thule, third the Swede Krensler, only one point behind Thule and protagonist of four partial victories in his battery. Plump World Champion Soren Johnsen (Denmark) was fourth. Danish victory among women with Anna Livbjerg (13th overall with 2-4-5 as best partials), nine times world champion and still reigning world champion; second the German Menke and third the Swedish Lanner.

2022 Bermuda Gold Cup Cancelled
Photo by John Singleton. Click on image to enlarge.

Bermuda Gold Cup The Royal Bermuda Yacht Club (RBYC) has made the difficult decision to cancel this year's Bermuda Gold Cup, a World Match Racing Tour Event, due to be held October 18 - 22, 2022.

"This is not a decision we have taken lightly and there were a few overriding concerns that have led to this outcome," said Past Commodore Jon Corless, Chair of the RBYC International Sailing Events Committee, "Securing sufficient sponsorship was paramount for this prestigious event, which is renowned around the world for its standard of excellence and has proven challenging in these uncertain and fast changing times."

We know that this will come as an enormous disappointment, not only to our other sponsors, competitors and spectators, but also to the global sailing community. The Match Racing world is still adjusting to the limitations of the past two years of Covid-19 and now has been impacted by the unrest in Europe that has caused further concerns and problems throughout the world. We would like to thank our host sponsor, the Bermuda Tourism Authority, for their continued support for this event.

The Bermuda Gold Cup is a founding event of the WMRT and the RBYC will continue to work hard with the WMRT to present this world class match racing event in the near future.

Semaine Olympique Francaise
Semaine Olympique Francaise The 53rd Semaine Olympique Francaise de Hyères - Toulon Provence Mediterranee, is back from April 23 to 30, 2022. Once again, the Olympic sailing elite will be in Hyères for one of the most anticipated events of the season. For the first time in France, the SOF will bring together on the Hyères field of play the 10 classes that will be present in Marseille for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Coming from more than 50 countries, the 650 registered competitors, including the world's best Olympic sailors, will make the Hyères event an exceptional edition. After the Trofeo Princess Sofia, at the beginning of April, Hyères will be the second major event on the Olympic calendar.

The 10 Olympic classes: iQFOiL (foil windsurfing, men and women), Kitefoil (foil kiteboarding, men and women), ILCA (solo dinghy, women and men), 49er (double dinghy, men and women), Nacra 17 (double foil catamaran, mixed), 470 (double dinghy, mixed) will compete on the Hyerois field of play, which is as technical as it is tactical and renowned for its often strong easterly winds.

The gold medallists at the Tokyo Olympic Games last summer, who will be competing in Hyères: Australia's Matt Wearn (men's ILCA), Italy's Ruggero Tita & Caterina Banti (Nacra 17, mixed), Brazil's Martine Grael and Kahena Kunze (women's 49er), Britain's Eilidh McIntyre, with new partner Martin Wringley (470 double dinghy, mixed).

For France, the world champions of iQFOiL, Helène Noesmoen and Nicolas Goyard will be competing in women's and men's in Hyères. Goyard will be up against Thomas Goyard, silver medallist in RS:X in Tokyo, and Pierre Le Coq, bronze medallist in RS: X in Rio. In KiteFoil, the field includes the world champion, Theo de Ramecourt; the European champion, Axel Mazella; and Lauriane Nolot (3rd in the World Championship). Gold medallist in Rio and silver medallist in Tokyo, Charline Picon, returns - and for the first time in competition in France in the 49er - partnering with Sarah Steyaert. Bronze medallist in Tokyo in the 470, Aloïse Retornaz will form a new mixed duet with Kevin Peponnet.

Mermod: IMOCA Is Stronger Than Ever
As its Annual General Assembly in Lorient comes to a close, Antoine Mermod, President of IMOCA, says the Class is in better shape than ever before and with an exciting new season of racing to come

IMOCA: Antoine, the IMOCA family seems to be enjoying excellent good health with new commercial partners, new skippers, new boats - 14 in all - and new races all in the mix for the IMOCA GLOBE SERIES 2022?

Antoine Mermod: "For sure, this is probably the best time for the IMOCA Class in its history. We have a lot of new projects underway, but also a lot of high quality projects too. In addition to that, we have quite a few boats in build now and most of the partners that were with us in the last Vendee Globe have decided to continue or even to upgrade their campaigns. That shows the Class is very strong. On top of that, we've got quite a lot of new partners coming in and interesting ones like Hublot - from the luxury watches industry. This shows we are a very attractive and dynamic Class and we can be very proud of that."

IMOCA: Isn't it the case that of the 16 new commercial partners and sponsors coming into the Class, 10 of them are international companies - more evidence that IMOCA is reaching out to a wide international audience?

AM: "To be honest the budget that is required to participate in the IMOCA world, especially for winning projects, is significant and that needs a big company to back it. These kinds of companies have to be organisations that are not just interested in the French market, but have a worldwide reach. And yes, we are happy that these sorts of companies are interested by our history, by our boats and by our skippers. It's a great thing that we can have such major brands entering our circuit."

IMOCA: Another feature in recent months has been the busy market for older boats changing hands between teams. This again suggests that the IMOCA Class is thriving, with new skippers coming in and older boats being given a new lease of life?

The Maritime Trail
The Maritime Trail 2022 was held for the second time by the Australian Wooden Boat Festival Inc. The trail included tours of several stunning boatyards across Southern Tasmania, as well as nautical and maritime themed workshops in these beautiful boatyards. On water activities were on offer and there was something for everyone.

The AWBF initiated the event to cater to covid restrictions, allowing punters to celebrate the wooden boat community and culture within Tasmania.

Wooden boats were and still are a common feature in Tasmania, an island surrounded by water. Sharing the knowledge surrounding the wooden boat craft is a big feature for the Australian Wooden Boat Festival.

The AWBF Inc crew want to thank all operators and hosts, for opening their doors and sharing their passion with the punters.

AWBF also want to thank their dedicated boat loving volunteers and staff, for all of their hard work in producing such a successful event.

Mediterranean Female Offshore Championship
The Marina Militare Nastro Rosa Mediterranean Female Offshore Championship, an event that officially opens the racing season of Sailing Series International, which in 2022 will organize the Marina Militare Nastro Rosa Tour and Veloce, as well as the European Championships (in May) and the World Championships (to be defined) Double Mixed Offshore, has started in a light wind from the south-east.

Leaving Genoa and the dock in front of Galata Museo del Mare for La Maddalena, the fleet sailed shoulder to shoulder for the first hour, limiting maneuvers as much as possible in order to maintain the right headway.

The crews composed by Claudia Rossi and Cecilia Zorzi (engaged on the Beneteau Figaro 3 Mexedia Sailing Project) and Kate Ledgard and Katarina Svedjefalt were on time on the starting line with a slight margin on the pursuers, led by Knuppel-Cantero and Aalburg-Fischer.

According to the weather forecast, the navigation to La Maddalena, 297 miles to be completed leaving Corsica to starboard, should proceed calmly: the sailors should encounter medium-light winds from the southeast, whose tendency should be decreasing and rotate towards the first. clock face.

If the described picture were confirmed, the arrival of the first ones should take place between Wednesday evening and Thursday morning.
