1000 Milles Des Sables
After a downwind run at full speed with between 25 and 28 knots of wind in rough seas between the BXA buoy and the La Corogne waypoint, the competitors in the 2nd edition of the 1000 Milles des Sables, who experienced a slight slowdown during a transition phase last night before returning to a sustained south-southeast flow, went back on course on Monday to join the Occidentale de Sein. A buoy that Sam Goodchild (Leyton) lead the Ocean Fifth fleet around on Monday.

The first Class40s, led by Corentin Douguet (Queguiner - Innoveo) aboard his brand new LiftV2, should do the same tomorrow morning.

The 2nd edition of the 1000 Milles des Sables has undoubtedly been marked by the capsizing of Armel Tripon's Ocean Fifty Les P'tits Doudous, which occurred last night while the Nantes sailor was sailing off the Galician coast in a SW flow of 18-20 knot

"I heard a crack when the mast touched the water..."

Shortly before midnight on Sunday April 10, Armel Tripon capsized aboard his Ocean Fifty off La Coruna while taking part in the 1000 miles of Sables race. This morning, safe and sound, he explained the circumstances of the accident.

He was sailing downwind in relatively unstable conditions (20-25 knots of wind) about thirty miles from La Coruna at the northwestern tip of Spain. The skipper took refuge inside his boat , the trimaran Les P'tits Doudous.

Less than two hours after capsizing, Armel Tripon was airlifted. He arrived in La Coruna .

Early this morning, a rescue team, led by Adrien Hardy, set sail to recover the trimaran in the area.

505 Euro Cup
The first leg of the 2020 505 Euro Cup commences this Friday at Yacht Club de San Raphael, France and more than 30 boats are expected to compete.

In what has become one of the highlights on the annual 505 calendar, the Euro Cup is a four-event series that takes place across France, Italy, Germany and, this year for the first time, Spain. There is a winner determined at each event as well as an overall series winner based on cumulative scores from three of the four regattas.

The Euro Cup has become increasingly popular amongst not only European sailors but also sailors from around the globe. This year's regatta will feature boats competing from Australia, Canada, South Africa and the United States in addition to many European nations. A number of World Champions are competing including, Wolfgang Hunger & Holger Jess (GER), Ian Pinnell & Alex Davies (UK) and Mike Holt with Rob Woelfel (USA), so tight, competitive racing is expected.

The 5o5 Class flagship event for 2020 will be the World Championship to be held in Cork in August. Early bird entries close 18th April. For Event information visit the World Championship event site at 2022 World Championship - Cork, Ireland.

MOD 70 Team Argo - new Antigua to Newport Record
A new Antigua to Newport record in the books, subject to ratification by the World Sailing Speed Record Council. Our time of 3D 0H 15M shaves about 5 1/2 hours off the pervious mark set in 2015 by our MOD sistership "Phaedo". After pleasant and fast downwind sailing through the Caribbean Sea the trip became progressively more difficult. Big downwind conditions east of Hatteras saw us pumping the brakes to keep things under control. A fairly large and disorganized sea state made this last night of the trip one to forget. But bright sunshine and flatter seas meant we could savor the final day and storm into Newport just ahead of the sunset. The trip was not without incident as we had to stop the boat several times with rudder bearing and mainsail lock issues. Truly heroic work by Maxi and Alister to remediate the bearing issues by dangling off the back of the yacht in big seas.

Our thanks to John Reed at WSSRC and our start and finish line commissioners Julian Gildersleeve in Antigua and Brad Read in Newport. Thanks as well to our shore support team of Michael Barnes, Scott Tompkins and James Dodd. Finally well done and congratulations to the sailors, Jason Carroll (owner/skipper), Brian Thomposon (navigator/sailing master), Chad Corning, Alister Richardson, Chris Maxted (boat captain), Pete Cumming, Thierry Fouchier and Charlie Ogletree.

A rest out of the water now for the yacht after a long overseas tour. Next up the Newport Bermuda Race in June.

Sessan Cup and UK Nordic Folkboat Nationals

Folkboat In September the Royal Lymington Yacht Club (RLymYC) will host two prestigious events for Nordic Folkboats: the 2022 Sessan Cup and the UK National Championships.

The 2022 UK Folkboat Association International Regatta will include the UK Nordic Nationals and Walcon Cup from Saturday 17th to Sunday 18th September and the Sessan Cup from Tuesday 20th to Thursday 22nd September. Five days of racing are planned in Christchurch Bay during the regatta week. The area provides a fantastic variety of sailing conditions against the backdrop of a picturesque coastline.

2022 is a special year for both boat and club: the Nordic Folkboat will be 80 years old, whilst Royal Lymington Yacht Club is celebrating its centenary. Plans are afoot for a sensational week of celebrations and social events to accompany the daily racing.

The origins of the Nordic Folkboat date back to 1941. While most of Europe was immersed in the Second World War, Sweden was neutral. The Royal Swedish Sailing Association held a competition to design a new keelboat which attracted 58 designs. The judges could not decide on a winner, instead naming six boats as all having good attributes. A young naval architect was tasked drawing plans for a new boat combining the best features of the six boats. The first Nordic Folkboat started construction at Arendals Yard in Gothenburg in October 1941 and was launched on 23rd April 1942.

Today the Nordic Folkboat International Association (NFIA) manages the class with national branches in Sweden, Denmark, Germany, the UK and Australia. More than 4,000 Nordic Folkboats have been built around the world, with the majority residing in Scandinavia and Germany. There are also fleets in Finland, Latvia, Estonia and the USA. Here in the UK there are around 40 Nordic Folkboats in the Western Solent, with the majority split between Lymington and Yarmouth, with smaller fleets in Poole, Hamble and Falmouth. Folkboat Week at Yarmouth is the principal annual Folkboat event in the UK and has been taking place for over fifty years.

The Sessan Cup is one of two main international events for the Nordic Folkboat, along with the annual Gold Cup which is usually held in one of the Baltic states. In addition the end of season "Rolling Home Regatta" takes place in Berlin, and an Invitational Event is held in San Fransisco Bay every two years.

Southampton charity Jubilee Sailing Trust faces closure once more
A sailing charity that offers tall ship experiences to disabled people is facing closure, unless it can raise £500,000 in a week.

The Jubilee Sailing Trust will be forced into ceasing operations ending a forty-four year history, unless it can urgently raise a minimum of £500K by Thursday April 14 and a total of £1.2 million by the end of September 2022.

The Jubilee Sailing Trust last faced closure in 2019. It managed to raise £1m in five days following an emergency fundraising effort.

JST's chief executive, Mr Fleming, said the charity had noticed a recent decline in donations.

"All charitable giving is quite rightly going to Ukraine at the moment and before that it was going to the NHS during the pandemic," he said.

Mr Fleming added that the trust had also lost some loyal donors to Covid.

The charity owns Sailing Tenacious which it said was now the only tall ship in the world that allowed disabled and non-disabled people to sail alongside each other.

Eya Guezguez
Eya Guezguez Eya Guezguez, 17, who skippered Tunisia's entry in the Women's Skiff (49erFx) event at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, died while training on April 10, 2022. Eya competes with her twin sister Sarra, with the accident occurring when they capsized in strong winds off the coast of the Tunisian capital Tunis.

The sisters, both aged 16 at Tokyo 2020, finished last in the 21-boat fleet. The Tunisian Olympic Committee (CNOT) has described her death as "a tragedy in the sports scene."

With their coach alongside in a RIB while training, he was able help free Sarra from the tangled rigging before locating Eya on whom he attempted CPR. The young Olympian was taken to hospital where she was pronounced dead after drowning.

The incident has shocked Tunisia's sporting community and sparked anger and frustration amongst Tunisians, with many questioning management and the nature of safety equipment.

An investigation has been launched into the incident.

Raceboats Only 1944 Ciclon Sparkman & Stephens 52 Ft Sloop. 195,000 GBP. Located in Cyprus.

CICLON was designed by K. Aage Nielsen while at Sparkman and Stephens in New York. Olin Stephens considered Neilsen the best designer they ever had - moreover stating that if he was ever going to have a yacht built for himself, he would most surely have wanted an Aage Nielsen design. Nielsen’s manic attention to detail extended to his demanding the best from his builders and CICLON was no exception - and benefitting further from being the yard owner’s own boat ! Launched in Cuba in 1944 she was rarely off the podium - beating such legends as STORMY WEATHER and TICONDEROGA. Of course beautiful and fast, is it time now to reintroduce her to her sisters ?
