51 Trofeo Princesa Sofia Mallorca
Ruggero Tita and Caterina Banti (ITA) take the overall title as winners of The Trofeo Princesa Sofia Mallorca as well as dominating their Class, the Nacra 17 catamaran

The Trofeo Princesa Sofia Mallorca was the first major international event for Olympic sailing classes since the 2020 Summer Games in Tokyo

Racing concluded Saturday for one of the largest Olympic regattas in the world with more than 1,015 sailors, 779 boats and boards, representing 62 nations

The regatta marked the Hempel World Cup Series debut for four brand-new high-speed foiling events with top speeds of 40 knots (46 mph or 75 km)

Palma Bay witnessed 10 gold medal winning performances on Saturday 9 April, the concluding day of the Trofeo Sofia Mallorca. With 1,015 competitors, this regatta made for a glorious start to the Hempel Sailing World Cup Circuit of 2022. This week also marked the start of a new Olympic cycle towards Paris 2024, and a vital opportunity for the world's top sailors to make a statement of intent.

Next event in the Hempel World Cup Series is the Allianz Regatta in the Netherlands. The regatta will be situated in two locations near Amsterdam, with the 10 fleets split across Almere and Lelystad. Three-time ILCA 6 Olympic medallist Marit Bouwmeester (NED) is the tournament ambassador.

Melges World League Tuscany Grand Prix
Marina di Scarlino, Italy: The first round of the Melges World League 2022 edition ends with another extraordinary day of sailing (mistral wind increasing up to 18 knots).

The Tuscany Grand Prix hosted by Yacht Club Isole di Toscana saw eight races in the three days dedicated to the Melges 20, to which the Melges 14 fleet was added yesterday, completing four races.

Nothing "new" could be said about the Melges 20 class, where the outgoing Melges World League champion Fremito d'Arja picks up where he left off last year. A victory never questioned, with a linear and perfect performance for the team of Dario Levi (Stefano Cherin on the tactical calls) who literally dominated in a class where the technical level always leads to play everything in a few seconds and centimeters away.

The Tyrrhenian Sea now leaves room for the Adriatic where the Melges World League will turn on the spotlight on the Porto San Giorgio race course on the next 5 - 8 May where, in addition to the Melges 14 and Melges 20, the champions of the Melges 32 class will also be racing.

Melges World League – Tuscany Grand Prix, top five after 8 races with one discard:
1. ITA 050 - FREMITO d'ARIA (Dario Levi / Stefano Cherin) – 2,1,2,1,1,1,1,DNC: pt. 9

3. MON 301 . RAYA (Matteo Marenghi Vaselli / Giulio Desiderato) – 4,3,4,3,4,2,2,5: pt. 22

5. ITA 217 - B.LEX (Benedetta Jovane / Branko Brcin) – 3,8,5,4,5,3,4,2: pt. 26

The Harken MKIV Ocean Furler. We Asked Cruisers What They Wanted. Then We Built It.
Harken We spend time every year asking sailors and professional riggers for feedback on their most (and least) favorite Harken products. Year in an year out, our Mark Four (MKIV) headsail furlers rank at or near the very top of their lists. Why? They tell us MKIV has proven itself durable, reliable and easy to use. It's also straightforward to install.

This assessment drove our decision to start with the technology of that MKIV and develop a new line of cruising furlers. This might not sound like a logical leap requiring massive leaps in cognition. Hmmm. It always looks so obvious at the end.

Our new MKIV Ocean furling line is built and featured especially for cruising. It's smooth-rolling, to make every furl a little less physical, and bulletproof to stand and deliver for years. It's designed especially for intuitive assembly and retrofit. In fact it can be installed at the dock without taking the mast down--in an afternoon. The Ocean furler offers Harken's most robust capability. We add the features cruising sailors have been requesting, remove things they want offloaded and offer MKIV Ocean at a less racy price.

Extraordinary boats: Andrillot, the original 'Vertue' design

Andrillot Andrillot is the original 'Vertue', the design which launched Laurent Giles's long and illustrious career in 1935. Nic Compton reports

German boatbuilder Uli Killer was looking for a boat to sail while he was working on a big restoration project when he spotted Andrillot, a 25ft wooden cutter for sale in Dartmouth, UK.

The boat had recently undergone a three-year restoration and was said to be in very good condition for her age. The ad claimed the yacht was 'an important part of our maritime heritage' and that she and her sisterships had 'become legends in their own right'. But to Uli, a relative newcomer to the classic world, she was just a pretty boat at the right price.

"She looked pretty and was affordable for us. I knew nothing about her history, and I had to ring a friend to ask him who Laurent Giles was!" Killer recalls. "Then I saw articles in English and American magazines and realised she really was such a famous boat, and hundreds of them were built. Being No 1 makes her more interesting."

The boat Uli had inadvertently stumbled across was Andrillot, best known as the 'original Vertue', the first of a class which, 85 years after she was launched, is still going strong and now numbers around 200 boats. More by chance than intent, Uli had discovered a unique piece of maritime history, which he was able to buy for less than the price of a new VW Golf. He could hardly believe his luck.

J/70 UK Grand Slam Series #1
The J/70 UK Grand Slam Series is off and running with seven windward leeward races over two days of tight racing right through the 16-boat J/70 fleet. The Warsash Spring Championship was the venue, expertly hosted by the Warsash Sailing Club. There was close racing right through the J/70s with highly competitive starts, mark rounding and plenty of duels from front to back.

Martin Dent's Jelvis scored no worse than a fourth place to win Grand Slam #1 in the Open Class by three points from Charles Thompson's Brutus, helmed by Sam Carter. Doug Struth's DSP, helmed by Tom Mallindine, was the winner of the Corinthian Class by a single point from Johnathon Calascione's Calypso with Marshall King driving.

Jelvis and Brutus were level on points going into the last race, Jelvis won Race 7 to clinch the championship. Jelvis is very much a family boat with Martin Dent driving, daughter Ruby on the bow and the Wetherell brothers Jack and Henry on trim.

The J/70 UK Grand Slam Series continues outside The Solent with Round 2 as part of International Paint Poole Regatta, April 30th to May 2nd. --Louay Habib

With the debut of the new Club Cruiser Class at Cowes Week 2021, the Cruising Association and Cowes Week organisers have teamed up to produce a 'first-timer' video.

The Cruising Association is proud to be partnering with Cowes Week for the second year as presenting trophy sponsor for the Club Cruiser Class, which made its debut in 2021. The incredible technological laboratory and its 'French Heritage'
In part two of this series devoted to the history of the French in the round-the-world crewed race, IMOCA and The Ocean Race revisit the technological evolution that has coloured a race, which witnessed the first French victory in 1985-86 and the burgeoning career of a certain Franck Cammas.

When Mexican Ramon Carlin snatched glory in 1974 on the Swan 65 Sayula II, others were keen to emulate his performance. Cornelis 'Conny' Van Rietschoten, a Dutch industrialist, began construction of a 20-metre Sparkman & Stephens ketch, a near sistership to Sayula, albeit made of aluminium, with a longer waterline and carrying more sail area. Named Flyer, the ketch secured victory in the second Whitbread Round the World Race (1977-78) in 119 days.

By then the race had grabbed the attention of young naval architects, like New Zealanders Ron Holland and Bruce Farr, Frenchmen Philippe Briand, Gilles Vaton, Michel Joubert and Bernard Nivelt, as well as the Argentinian German Frers. The Whitbread was not just a fantastic technological laboratory, but also a wonderful showcase for the major yards responsible for production cruising yachts like Nautor Swan, Bowman and Camper & Nicholson. Some of the more notable innovations tested in the rigours of the Whitbread race included fractional rigs, rigid vangs, honeycomb core bulkheads and twin steering wheels.

Martin Le Pape: "The Route du Rhum... will be my very first solo transatlantic race"
After seven years spent on the demanding Figaro Beneteau circuit, Martin Le Pape, who aspires to line up one day at the start of the mythical Vendee Globe, is preparing to climb a new level. The Finisterien is about to enter the Class40 circuit at the helm of a Clak40 in the colors of the Stargardt Foundation. A VPLP plan whose construction began last December at Multiplast and whose launch is scheduled for May 13th. A machine with which he hopes to shine at the highest level during the Route du Rhum – Destination Guadeloupe next November.

In the wake of his fine 4th place in the French Elite Offshore Racing Championship won in September 2021, Martin Le Pape has shown his desire to change dimension and project himself on the famous Route du Rhum – Destination Guadeloupe in Class40 at the through a successful project, with a new boat. A VPLP plan whose owner has chosen to trust him fully to ensure the various technical choices and the monitoring of the construction site and then to accompany him in his own project.

The boat, which is scheduled to leave the yard on May 13, is number 3 of the Clak40s. The deck and the hull are assembled this Friday. There will then remain the installation of the fittings and the installation of the electronics to be carried out, as well as the decoration. Everything should go pretty quickly now as everything has been well anticipated."

Petersen Headed to U.S. Match Race Championship
Jeffery Petersen from Balboa Yacht Club wins the third David Storrs Memorial Qualifier, qualifying him for the USMRC. Pearson Potts came in second right behind him, but not without a strong fight. In the petite finals, Peter Wickwire won the first to two over Dave Perry, leaving him in 3rd place overall and Perry in 4th.

The David Storrs Memorial Qualifier is held in honor of Match Racing enthusiast, champion, and long-time Oakcliff supporter, David Storrs, who passed away in 2019. Eight teams fought to qualify for the US Match Racing Championship which will be held here at Oakcliff in October.

Teams saw heavy conditions all weekend. "It was hard work... really hard work"- Dave Perry. Saturday was rainy and fairly windy with 12 knots in the morning and 16 in the afternoon. The rain did make for a beautiful double rainbow that competitors saw on their way in. Saturday was good preparation for Sunday, which saw winds in the 20s and chaotic downwinds.

Solid gusts into the high 20s made for sporty semifinals and finals and some spectacular spinnaker mishaps. After the 10th flight, the race committee put up the Z flag, signaling no spinnakers. The finals were super competitive. Jeffery Petersen won the first two races over Pearson Potts, but Potts made a strong comeback in flight 12 and 13. It came down to a sudden death between him and Petersen. In the final race, Petersen won the start with better acceleration at the last minute. The wind continued picking up to gusts in the high 20s; Petersen rounded the gate only a boat length ahead of Potts. After an intense race Petersen ended up taking the win and the regatta!
