Palma At Its Memorable Best
The Bay of Palma turned on the perfect combination of sunshine and solid SW'ly winds for the fourth day of competition at the Trofeo Sofia Mallorca Olympic classes regatta, the first Hempel World Cup Circuit of 2022.

It was the first day of Gold Fleet racing in the Formula Kiteboard which put on a spectacular display for the tourists promenading along the waterfront of Playa de Palma. Out on the water it was a battle of the bigger and smaller French riders, with 110kg of Benoit Gomez (FRA) powering to a race win in the opening heat. Reigning World Champion, Theo de Ramecourt (FRA), was second behind Gomez but then hit his stride to win the next four heats. This puts de Ramecourt three points ahead of Gomez in the rankings with Toni Vodisek (SLO) seven points off the lead in third.

France is also starting to dominate the Women's Formula Kiteboard, as Lauriane Nolot (FRA) extended her lead to 11 points over Ellie Aldridge (GBR) in second overall. However, reigning World Champion Daniela Moroz (USA) started to find her form today. Apart from a UFD disqualification for breaking the start line too soon, three first places and a second made the American the stand-out performer of the day and puts her in third overall, just a point behind Aldridge.

Canada's Sarah Douglas is running away with the ILCA 6 Sofia Mallorca title. After four finals races she is already 20pts clear of Greece's second placed Vasileia Karachaliou, strengthening her hand today with two more wins.

The 49er class looks set to go to the wire with the top five teams going into the final day of gold fleet racing with only four points between them. Leaders are Poland's European Champions Mikolai Staniul and Jakub Sztorch.

138 Solo Sailors Will Compete On The Route Du Rhum
On Sunday November 6 the huge fleet will set off from Saint Malo on the 3,542 nautical miles passage to Guadeloupe. The initial registration limit was set at 120 skippers but, since July 2021 when they opened, such has been the demand for entries that a further 18 wild card entries have been accepted. The 2022 edition is already a record breaker.

In France on the back of the massive success of the last Vendée Globe La Route du Rhum - Destination Guadeloupe has already been described as 'the' major sports event of 2022 and this huge, record entry firmly endorses this assertion. Since 1978's inaugural edition when there were 38 entries never have there been so many entries. With 149 applications in total the organisers will allocate those 18 wild cards before the end of April.

The organisers and the city have worked hard and smart over recent months to find pragmatic, practical solutions to accommodate as many skippers, boats and teams as possible bearing and to maintain the broad mix of competitors at approximately half professional and half semi pro or amateurs. And as usual, the leading lights of world solo ocean racing will start on the very same start line as the adventurers and amateurs, all with their courses set for Guadeloupe.

OC Sport Pen Duick has until the end of April 2022 to decide on the admission of giant trimarans within a class (such as the Ocean Fifty, the IMOCA and the Class40) or a category (such as the Rhum Multi and Mono Rhums).

M32 Miami Series Ends on High Note
In it's 8th season the 2022 Miami Winter Series ended on a high note when the M32 fleet got together for the last event of the series.Team Convexity got away with the win of both the event and the series and showed that they can not only defend a lead but fight back from a tough position.

The 10 boat fleet was joined by fleet newcomers Bobby Julien on DingBat and Jay Cross on Flank Speed. The DingBat team had a healthy competition within the competition when Bobby's sons, all accomplished junior sailors aged 11, 13 and 16 took over the helm for full races and held their own in the star specked fleet.

After 58 races in the 5 events this winter the M32 class says goodbye to our Shake-A-Leg family for this time. We will be back next year. At the awards ceremony Shake-A-Leg hosted a presentation and CEO and founder Harry Horgan expressed gratitude to the 6-figure donations received from M32 class members and told the fleet of some of the improvements and changes to be implemented for next year.

The American fleet is now relocating to Newport Rhode Island for the 3 event Midtown Cup ending with the North American Championship. The racing starts in June and the class will, like last year, be hosted by the Midtown Racing Club, with its unique venue downtown Newport and crawling distance from Midtown Oyster Bar. The schedule is set so that the fleet will ship out to the Worlds in Portugal the week after the last event. The European fleet will start their racing on beautiful Lake Garda in May, make stops in Medemblik, Marstrand then back to Garda for the Europeans before joining the American fleet for the Worlds.

Battery Backlash: Nigel Calder Weighs In on LI Technology
We are surrounded by billions of lithium-ion batteries and think nothing of it. I started to add up the batteries at home: in my phone and computers, and smoke alarms, and the electric lawnmower, and the weed whacker, and the spare batteries in my desk drawer, and those in the kitchen drawer … and the number quickly ran into a couple of dozen. My homeowner's insurance policy is silent on the subject of lithium-ion batteries. In contrast, I am beginning to hear anecdotal stories of marine insurance companies denying coverage if there are lithium-ion batteries on a boat. Is this an over-reaction?

We've all seen the pictures of burning Teslas and hoverboards, and some of us have seen pictures of a burned boat or two. There is no doubt that lithium-ion batteries pose their own challenges, and the fires can be spectacular. But if you look at the incidence of these fires as compared to, say, fires on cars powered by gasoline, absent specific manufacturing defects (the hoverboards) the risks are well within the boundaries of what we (and insurance companies) seem to deem to be acceptable. Why should our boats be different?

The core problem I see with our boats is the inherent potential to operate lithium-ion batteries outside of their safe operating envelope (SOE).

Alan Roura, New Hublot Ambassador
With less than 1000 days to go before the start of the tenth edition of the Vendée Globe, Swiss watch manufacture Hublot has teamed up with skipper Alan Roura. As he prepares for his third consecutive Vendée Globe, the Genevan skipper can count on a top-tier partner and long-term collaboration towards an ambitious goal: to win the 2024 edition of the "Everest of the seas" - the world's most challenging sailing race.

Alan Roura has spent 27 of his 29 years on water, including nine years racing (he competed in the Mini Transat at the tender age of 20), two solo round the world ventures and thousands of nautical miles on the clock. For him, the sea is freedom. As the youngest finisher in the Vendée Globe 2016 and current holder of the North Atlantic single-handed sailing record, the Swiss skipper, based in Brittany since 2012, has his sights firmly set on his next challenge: to be the first foreign winner of the Vendée Globe.

As preparation, he will skipper the IMOCA 60 HUBLOT in every race on the calendar for the next three seasons - which includes four transatlantic crossings - before embarking on another round the world voyage in 2024. A unique human adventure and a magnificent sporting challenge that will see him partner with the Swiss watch manufacture aboard a state-of-the-art craft - a futuristic latest-generation foiling yacht with a fully enclosed cockpit. Hublot has had historic ties to sailing since the brand was established in 1980. Nearly 25 years later, the watchmaker has chosen Alan Roura as the figurehead for its return to racing - in the sport's most legendary event.

1000 Milles des Sables
Back after four years of absence, the 1000 miles of Sands, a solo offshore race between the Fastnet lighthouse (Ireland) and Cape Finisterre (Spain) inaugurates the Class40 and Ocean Fifty season. Qualifying for the Route du Rhum 2022, this great loop starting from Les Sables-d'Olonne is at high risk of seeing its route modified, to protect the 22 competitors from the bad weather which is forecast in the North of the route. The start is postponed to Saturday.

Blame it on a big depression that will hit the Atlantic coast. Lack of luck, it is Friday, the day of departure initially planned, that the winds will blow the strongest (with gusts of more than 40 knots) and that the swell will be the most threatening, with an amplitude greater than 4 meters, risk of generating dangerous breakers at the entrance to the port.

Once the favorable window has been found, another difficulty will present itself to the competitors and the organizers since a new depression should rise towards Ireland after the start and make it very complicated for the skippers to descend towards Spain after they have rolled up the Fastnet lighthouse."This new depression could really create very harsh conditions for the sailors, so much so that we are thinking very seriously about modifying the course. We are considering several solutions but what is taking shape for the moment is rather a navigation that would concentrate on the Bay of Biscay which looks a little quieter. Schematically, this would mean going back and forth between Ouessant, Corunna, Brittany, the BXA buoy off Corunna… Anyway, the most important thing is that the course of this race is at least 1,000 miles, so that the competitors who finish the race confirm their qualification for the Route du Rhum 2022 ," adds Denis Hugues.
