Change Of Weather Regime Means New Challenges At Trofeo Princesa Sofia Mallorca
Changeable weather on the Bay of Palma might have finally brought some sunshine and warmer temperatures to the racing waters of the 51 Trofeo Princesa Sofia Mallorca Olympic classes, but staying on top of the sizeable shifts in wind direction and pressure offered a whole new set of challenges to the huge fleet of racers after the first couple of days of cold offshore NE'ly winds.

On this third day of the first Hempel World Cup Series regatta of 2022 the standout performances included French Formula Kite rider Lauriane Nolot. After yesterday's frustrating opening to her Olympic campaign yesterday, today she fired off a second and three first places to lead the women's fleet by five points.

On the first day of gold fleet racing the comeback of Australia's ILCA7 2020 gold medallist Matthew Wearn has been impressive A technical failure meant he started the event with a DNC then 26th but today he fought his way up to eighth overall with two second places.

French impress
This may only be the very start of the road to Paris 2024 but the strength and depth of the French team is impressive in Mallorca leading overall in the 49er, the ILCA 7 and both iQFOiL and Formula Kite women.

Medallists dominate
In the Nacra 17, the Olympic gold and silver medallists from Tokyo dominated the day. After a below-par first day on the water in the stronger breeze, John Gimson and Anna Burnet (GBR) won the start and stretched out to an unassailable lead, taking their first win of the week. The Olympic Champions from Italy, Ruggero Tita and Caterina Banti, were second across the finish line.

The system is new to everyone but it seems the established teams are learning quicker than the rest, this time with the Italians taking the win in the next race and the British in second.

Champagne Sailing On The Final Day Of 49th BVI Spring Regatta
Conditions could not have been more perfect for the final day of racing in the 49th BVI Spring Regatta & Sailing Festival. Sunny blue skies, breeze in the mid-teens, and temperatures in the low 80s. Comprising 64 islands, the BVI is always an interesting and challenging place to sail, from the protected waters of the Sir Francis Drake Channel, to the outer islands, with numerous natural marks which offer multiple possibilities to mix up the racing, as some seventy teams who participated in this year's edition can attest. And the winners are…

Botin 52 FOX, owned/helmed by Victor Wild, 1st in CSA-1.
It was victory for Victor Wild, owner/skipper of the beautiful Botin 52 FOX, as he took five bullets over three days of racing for a clean sweep of CSA-1.

Crew on Fujin take first in Offshore Multihull.
Greg Slyngstad, owner/driver of Fujin, the Bieker 53 racing in Offshore Multihull finished first in class.

Cape 31 Arabella first in CSA-2.
In CSA-2, the Cape 31 Arabella, took first overall. Niall Dowling who owns the boat with his wife Olivia said he's enjoying the new boat which was raced for the first time in St Maarten just recently.

Tony Mack & his Team McFly win again!
Six bullets and a second place put Team McFly racing on the J-122 El Ocaso, in first overall in CSA-3.

EH01 Global Racing / first in Performance Cruising.
In Performance Cruising, EH01-Global Yacht Racing, a Beneteau First 47.7, scored five bullets over three days of racing. "Our crew worked really well together, and we got the perfect conditions for our boat," Caty Rota, helmswoman, said.

Team Dark Horse on Marty J/Moorings 48, racing in Bareboat 1, made a clean sweep in class with five bullets.

Seas the Daze/the Moorings 45 helmed by Florian Lienau and friends from Hamburg and Kiel, Germany, took first in Bareboat 2.

Robin Tattersall & crew on Moon Rainbow take first in BB3.

Every year the Regatta presents The Guy Eldridge Spirt of Enthusiasm Award to an individual or individuals who shine in the spirt of the sport and who has stepped out and gone beyond. This year the award was presented to long-time event volunteers Anne Poor and Pam Fuller, for their outstanding commitment and hard work to the event over many years.

ROBLINE GOES PALMA: the 51st Trofeo Princesa Sofia Mallorca takes place after a two-year break!
ROBLINE With only a couple of days to go, more than 700 crews, representing 58 nationalities, have registered to compete at this year's Trofeo Princesa Sofia Mallorca Hempel World Cup Series. They will compete in ten classes: the women's ILCA 6, FX, IQ Foil Women and Formula Kite Women; the men's ILCA 7, 49er, IQ Foil Men and Formula Kite Men; and the mixed 470 and Nacra 17.

"It is great to see that many sailing teams in one spot again. Especially the large female presence is astonishing. This proves the relevance and inclusivity of this sport. We see this event as a great kick-off event for the Road to Paris and are excited to be there ourselves," says Rainer Wilhelm, Global Sales Manager from Robline. Robline provides material to several individual teams, but is also partner of certain sailing federations such as the Norwegian, Swedish, Finnish, and Austrian Sailing Federation.

The Trofeo Princesa Sofía Mallorca will muster the world's best specialists, from April 1st to 9th 2022, across the earlier mentioned ten Olympic sailing disciplines, which are set to compete in Paris 2024! It will also be the first competition in which 49er and 49er FX teams will use the new regulation equipment for Paris 2024. The incorporation of 3Di technology means an aesthetic change due to the black color of the material and a certain change in performance as some teams still do not have the new type of sail and some choose to use the previous version.

Will there be performance differences?

The new Formula Kite format is another addition to the Olympic Circus.

Entries open for the 2022 IRC European Championship as part of Damen Breskens Sailing Weekend
From 24th to 28th August the 2022 IRC European Championship will be sailed as part of Damen Breskens Sailing Weekend.

The Notice of Race and entry portal can be found online via https://www.breskenssailing.nl or directly at https://www.manage2sail.com and there is an early bird discount for entries made and paid before 30th June 2022.

The venue for the event is Breskens in the southwest of the Netherlands. There will be one day of registration and equipment inspection followed by four days of racing on varied courses, including windward/leeward courses on set marks and coastal courses using existing navigational marks. The racing area is on the edge of the North Sea and Westerschelde river leading up to Antwerp, which makes for interesting tidal conditions.

Breskens, being a tourist hotspot, has a lot to offer onshore and there is ample accommodation available for visiting crew. As the event is based at the major marina in the area all the marine services needed are readily available on site.

Damen Breskens Sailing Weekend is also hosting the CR rated yachts and Double-Handed entries on a separate course with three days of racing from Friday to Sunday. A separate Notice of Race is published for these classes.

Michael Fay 'This should not have happened. This didn't have to happen.'
The Royal NZ Yacht Squadron has failed the country by letting the defence of the America's Cup go to Barcelona, Sir Michael says.

Sir Michael, who backed three losing bids for the America's Cup, is considering cutting ties with the club over the loss of the regatta to Spain.

He has been a club member for 45 years but says it has badly handled the situation, effectively allowing Team New Zealand boss Grant Dalton to make the decision.

"What they've done is they've actually not kept control of the decision on venue... It's their job, absolutely, it's their job.

"This should not have happened. This didn't have to happen. From the club's point of view it should never have happened."

Sir Michael says the country has built "a fabulous record" in the regatta, probably the best track record of any country and remains a dominant force.

He believes the America's Cup has been a huge benefit for this country - in terms of attracting tourists, building goodwill overseas, providing work for the boating industry and momentum for the Auckland waterfront development.

"I think we all deserve to know, not just the members, but New Zealanders at large, followers of the cup, the companies, the supporters, the people who have been around the cup for such a long time. Why did this happen? Why was it not kept here in New Zealand by you and the club?"

He would like Grant Dalton to also explain the decision.

Paralympic fever in San Francisco as leading figures get behind World Sailing's #BacktheBid
Inspiring stories of athletic ability, perseverance, and skill were the order of the day at the St Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco on 25 March 2022, when World Sailing gathered three USA Para Sailors to an exclusive meet and greet with national and international media during the Grand Finale of Mubadala United States Sail Grand Prix | San Francisco. As part of its global campaign to reinstate sailing in the Paralympic Games for LA28, the athletes were joined by representatives from US Sailing and World Sailing to explain in more detail the reinstatement process as the international federation prepares its 'questionnaire' response to the International Paralympic Committee.

Marcus Spillane, representing World Sailing, and a Member of the Para World Sailing Committee, was very direct about the federation's focus. "Let me be very clear: reinstating sailing in the Paralympics is a primary objective of World Sailing. We are committed to continue driving the growth and development of this side of our sport, and it is a key cornerstone of our strategy. But it is important to remember that Para Sailing is not just about the Paralympics, although that is the reason we are here today, it is about growing the sport of Para Sailing as a whole."

Dragon Titan

Dragon Titan The Dragon may be a one design class but that doesn't mean the boats are all characterless clones. Just occasionally a Dragon comes along that becomes a personality in her own right. Titan was built in 1969 by Børresens as DK450. She won the 1974 Gold Cup in Le Harve in the hands of Nick Truman under the sail number K450. Gerry Owens brought her to Ireland in 1975 where she became IR45 - this was in the days when control of sail numbers was more relaxed so they simply dropped the 0 to save money! She raced regularly around Ireland and further afield for a quarter of a century, including winning the Irish National Championship in 1983. Over the years she became something of a legend on the Irish Dragon circuit and was a much-loved member of the fleet.

The boat was sold by Gerry around 2000 and then re-decked in cedar by Rui Ferreira of West Cork Boats in 2012 after being bought by Rui's father-in-law to use for cruising around West Cork. She was then laid up for several years until Ben Cooke purchased her in August 2020.

Ben's love affair with Dragons is longstanding and he was looking for a classic restoration project that he both could race seriously and cruise with his family. The opportunity to purchase the legendary Titan was too good to resist and in late August 2020 Ben took ownership and moved her once again to Rui Ferreira's yard for restoration to begin.

For Ben this project needed to be completed to a strict and relatively limited budget. Fortunately, he has good connections within the fleet and the sailing industry, so he put out feelers for help. The responses were extraordinarily generous with many people donating both expertise and equipment.

Ben's original plan to keep costs down had been to not only project manage the restoration himself, but to also work with Rui in the yard. Unfortunately, the Covid restrictions put paid to that plan and Rui brought in an assistant, Jaap, to help him while Ben supervised remotely. The goal was to bring Titan back to a competitive racing standard without losing her patina or history.
