Windy First Test For New Classes At 51 Trofeo Princesa Sofia Mallorca
In every respect other than the air temperature there was a baptism of fire on the Bay of Palma when three of the new classes contested their first races in the Olympic classes arena at the 51 Trofeo Sofia Mallorca today. Strong, gusty offshore breezes pumped up to well over 25kts at times to provide a stiff test for the debuting iQFOiL mens and womens foiling windsurfing classes and the mixed 470 dinghy class.

Britain's powerfully built Sam Sills revelled in his preferred windy conditions in the Men's iQFOiL fleet. A past double world champion as a youth windsurfer and an accomplished former RS:X racer who has been competing at the Sofia for ten years, Sills banged in two opening wins in his 50 strong fleet before jumping the start gun to land a UFD disqualification which he immediately atoned for with his third winning gun.

With Finn Hawkins in second and Andrew Brown third Sills leads a GBR monopoly of the top three places proving the benefit of the squad's extended training period in Lanzarote and two good weeks practice on the Mallorcan regatta waters.

In the Women's iQFOiL France's double European champion Hélène Noesmoen made the best start, conditions today being more reminiscent of her native Les Sables d'Olonne on the French Atlantic coast than the Mediterranean.

The tough conditions were an acid test for the freshly formed mixed doubles partnerships in the 470 dinghy. The challenge of keeping the boat upright left little time to fine tune manoeuvres and communication. Spain's Olympic 470 bronze medal winning helm Jordi Xammar is now sailing with Nora Brugman. Somehow they battled through to 1st and 2nd places in their two heats. This puts them in equal 1st overall with the Italians in the other qualifying group, Giacomo Ferrari and Bianca Caruso.

In the ILCA 7 men's fleet Cyprus Pavlos Kontides, the 2012 Olympic silver medallist, posted two wins to lead ahead of GBR's Michael Beckett and Germany's Philipp Buhl who both sailed to a second and a first in their respective qualifying fleets.

WHAT Aiming for a 2 hr 15 min race we played safe with a slightly shorter course and options for shortening. The windward mark was set for Royal Southern and although we had 20 degree wind shifts during the start sequence it kept coming back to prediction so it was all go, with all classes having their most competitive starts yet with only metres to spare on the guns.

Out on the race track competitors found it challenging predicting the wind shifts and lulls on the first beat, then more stable breeze kicked in for the down wind legs to produce some exciting spring sailing. A substantial wind veer to NE for a time on the last leg helping the leading yachts that went right, then it backed again for the rest, that's yacht racing.

Johhny Cooper's Cape 31 Fanatic took a commanding lead in Class 1 over Galahad of Cowes, Mike and Suzie Yates' J109 Jago took Class 2 and are now equal with Mojo Rising in the standings, whilst James Crew's Quokka won Class 3 again and is now the boat to catch for the series overall.

Next week is the start of the Spring Championships with the White fleet (J70 and SB20's) joining the IRC Classes, we are now up to 70 entries and looking forward to some competitive sailing. It's not to late to enter and we will be deciding on individual class starts on Wednesday evening, so don't leave it too late to join in the fun.

52nd Newport Bermuda Race Eyes Second Largest Fleet Ever
Boasting a fleet of 215 yachts, the Newport Bermuda Race is set to return for the 52nd "Thrash to the Onion Patch" on June 17.

The fleet size for the 635-nautical mile race, co-hosted by the Cruising Club of America and the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club, is shaping up to be the second largest in the race's history, trailing only the 265 yachts that entered the centennial anniversary race in 2006.

The entry period closed on April 3, and as the provisional entry list stands, 72 entrants in this year's race also sailed the 2018 race. Although the 2020 race was postponed due to COVID-19, the pandemic only whetted ocean racers' enthusiasm for the classic yachting event that traverses the Gulf Stream, the northerly flowing ocean current off the U.S. eastern seaboard, and which has been a feature of the racing calendar since 1906.

This year's race features eight divisions: Double-Handed (22 entries), Finisterre for cruisers (38), Gibbs Hill Lighthouse (27), Multihull (3), Open (1), Spirit of Tradition (2), St. David's Lighthouse (121) and Super Yacht (1).

The fleet includes eight of 17 class winners from the 2018 race as well as two overall division winners. Jason Carroll (New Rochelle, New York) looks to go back-to-back in the Multihull Division while the Morris Justine 36 Yankee Girl goes after a three-peat in the Double-Handed Division but under new owner Thomas Vander Salm.

The Multihull Division debuted in 2018 and this year counts three entries, led by Carroll's MOD70 Argo. Carroll won the division in '18 with his Gunboat 62 Elvis.

As typical, the St. David's Lighthouse Division features the most entries, 122, and includes two past trophy winners: Michael Cone's (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) classic Hinckley Bermuda 40 Actaea from 2014 and Rives Potts' (Essex, Connecticut) timeless McCurdy & Rhodes 48 Carina, which won back-to-back in 2010 and '12. In all, four class winners in the St. David's Lighthouse Division from 2018 are set to return this year. -- Sean McNeill

Still Blowing Hard
On Saturday, the second day of Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta, the trade winds were still blowing hard which tested the lovely classic boats and their crews especially after the Friday evening dock party with a steel band and plenty of beer and rum courtesy of our sponsors Carib and Mount Gay.

The Butterfly course saw the 65' Alfred Mylne cutter, The Blue Peter, built in 1929 win the vintage class and the 1973 S&S Swan, Montana beating the rest of the fleet in her historic class. The 91' yawl Bequia came first again in the Spirit of Tradition class, as did Aschanti IV in the schooner class.

The dragon challenge continued in Falmouth Bay with Filippo Amonti of Cortina Yacht Club winning the first race, Mike Toppa of New York Yacht Club winning the second and Rocco Falcone of Antigua Yacht Club winning the last two races of the day. -- Ginny Field

Mystic Seaport completing restoration of floating New York City restaurant
Mystic Seaport Museum is completing the restoration of the Pilot, a historic wooden schooner that now operates as an upscale oyster bar and restaurant docked in Brooklyn, N.Y., at the mouth of the East River.

The 124-foot-long Pilot and its sister ship, the schooner Sherman Zwicker, docked on the Hudson River in the city's Tribeca neighborhood, which also has an oyster bar, called Grand Banks, have earned rave reviews from publications such as Travel and Leisure, Bon Appetit, Vogue, CNN and New York Magazine, among many others.

Long before it became a oyster bar, the 98-year-old Pilot had a long and storied history.

During a tour of the schooner Wednesday morning, Christopher Sanders, director of the museum's Henry B. duPont Preservation Shipyard, explained the Pilot was designed by William Starling Burgess, whom he called the preeminent yacht designer of the 1930s, who designed three America's Cup yachts.

Sanders said a group of people from Boston approached Burgess to "design the fastest schooner on the planet" to compete in the prestigious Fishermen's Cup race that initially included Canadian and American fishing boats.

"And this was the result," Sanders said of the Pilot. "This boat is a piece of history."

New member of Caribbean Sail Training is Laura Dekker
The Scorpio 72 sailboat Guppy at St.Maarten Simpson Bay Photograph by Jean Jarreau for Caribbean Sail Training. Click on image to enlarge.

Scorpio 72 Laura Dekker, know in the Netherlands as "Het Zeilmeisje " just became the newest member of the non profit association Caribbean Sail Training with her ''Laura Dekker World Sailing Foundation'' and her sailyacht Guppy, a Scorpio 72.

Laura was born on 20 September 1995 and in 2009, she announced her plan to become the youngest person to circumnavigate the world on her sailboat, single handed.

The dutch childcare stepped in and prevented Laura from departing while taking over the custody of her from both her parents. In July 2010, a Dutch court ended this custody arrangement and gave it back to the parents.

The record-breaking attempt finally began on 21 August 2010.

Laura successfully completed the solo circumnavigation in a 12.4 meter (40 ft) two-masted ketch sailboat named Guppy, arriving in Simpson Bay St.Maarten 518 days later at the age of 16.

On 20 February 2015, she obtained a Yacht Master Ocean 200 ton Certificate.

She started the Laura Dekker World Sailing Foundation together with her partner Sander and they now have a new and larger sailboat which she named again Guppy.

Laura & Sander started to do sail training with youngsters in Europe, did Atlantic crossings and have been cruising around in the Caribbean.

s.v. Guppy is now member number 73 in the long list of Caribbean Sail Training vessels. The membership implicates that CST will eventually have some Caribbean students / trainees on the yacht in the near future in addition to the other International students which are on board Guppy.

The non profit association Caribbean Sail Training offers youngsters from the Caribbean the possibilities to enroll as trainees on sail training vessels ( mostly the so called Tall Ships ) and sponsors the fees that the boats need for the sail training so that the parents or youngsters ( who in many cases don't have the money to pay for the on board courses ) do not have to pay those themselves.

CST pays also airline fares and hotel accommodation for the trainees if needed.

Arthur Beale, one of the UK's oldest chandleries, has closed its Portsmouth shop.

Footfall was not high enough to support a shop at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard

The shop opened in the Historic Dockyard in July 2021, following the closure of its Shaftsbury Avenue, London, shop in April 2021.

In a statement, Arthur Beale said the Dockyard had seemed to be a perfect location, but the footfall was not enough to support the shop.

"We have aspirations to still have a shop but in the short term it will be limited to Pop-Up's, fairs and markets," said the statement.

Instead, the company will rely on its online shop and says it has many exciting events ahead, including the launch of a new Arthur Beale clothing range this summer.
