51st Trofeo Princesa Sofía Mallorca Regatta

* While the Olympic classes were finalising preparations for their debut, the racer-cruisers, one designs and Musto Skiff finished their race programme today. The unstable wind and rain showers prevented the ORC, J/80 and Dragon one designs from competing which meant that the results of the previous day were definitive.

The instability of the wind, showers and lulls prevented the last day of the Trofeo Princesa Sofia Mallorca for the ORC class and the J/80 and Dragons.

The Race Committee tried its best to get the coastal race for the cruisers and at least one windward leeward race for the one designs but it was impossible.

The day started with an easterly breeze, as most of the forecasts had predicted, but when the ORCs had been on the water for an hour there was a 180-degree shift to the west, followed by scattered showers and a total drop in the wind.

With the fleet spread out all over the Bay of Palma and barely able to make any progress, the organisers decided to suspend all the races. The leaders at the end of the day on Saturday became the winners of the 51 Trofeo Princesa Mallorca.

Javier Sanz's Elena Nova, with two firsts in the windward-leeward races of the previous day, took the victory in ORC 1-2.

In ORC 3-5, the victory went to Phillip Seippel's Shazam, with a record of one win and one third. Eduardo Horrach's Azuree, winner of yesterday's coastal race, was crowned champion in the ORC A2 class.

As for the one-designs, Michael Zankel's Powwow triumphed with three races won over Friday and Saturday, while Helena Alegre, at the helm of the J/80 AGD Desamiantados, won the J80 class with two victories and a second place.

The Musto Skiffs finished up with ten races in total and the regatta victory going to South African Andy Tarnoton and the European title going to Peter Greenhalgh of GBR who is now the European champion of the class.

SUI 318 "1 Quick 1" wins Paul & Shark International Cup, in San Remo
San Remo Yacht Club hosted the 17th edition of the "Paul and Shark" International Dragon Cup 0ver March 17th to 20th with 43 registered boats including many top International Teams who viewed this popular event as a warm up for the European Championships. Despite strong easterly breezes all week the Race Committee did an excellent job to complete 4 quality races in tough conditions, with gusts occasionally exceeding 25kts and choppy, challenging waves.

Race 4 began in similar conditions and this time it was SUI 318 "1 Quick 1" who took the lead on the first downwind leg after deciding to "bear-a-way" set instead of gybe setting at the top mark. This rewarded helm Wolf Waschkuhn and his team of Charles Nankin & Ruairidh Scott with the choice of gate marks and they elected to go inshore on the second upwind which sealed their victory in this very exciting race. Indeed on returning to the Yacht Club on Saturday evening as "Club House Leader' Wolf and his experienced team would not have known that no racing on the final day due to too much wind, meant the Paul & Shark International Cup was theirs again for the second year running! Well done.

Runners up overall just 2pts behind was JPN 56 "YRed" helmed by Peter Gilmour who has remained in San Remo with his team of son Sam & Yaji Yasuhiro.

In 3rd place overall and taking the final podium place in this 4 race series (so no discard allowed, as 5 races were required before discard) was GBR 819 "Fever" Klaus Diederichs, crewed by Diego Negri and Jamie Lea.

Gladwell's Line
New Zealand is the big loser from the decision to take the opportunity of a home defence offshore.

The situation is not surprising given that the team has been dragged backwards through a blackberry bush by the NZ Government, Auckland Council and most of the mainstream media.

Those antics started soon after the Kiwis won in Bermuda, and the very public debate started over base location options. It became obvious that the panjandrums, used to dealing with a World controlling body, did not understand that Emirates Team New Zealand had complete control over THEIR event.

The 2021 America's Cup came within an ace of going to the alternate venue, and team boss Grant Dalton was in Italy to make that announcement when there was a late change of plan for Auckland.

The media campaign that was conducted against the team and its principals over claimed financial wrong-doing was hugely damaging to an America's Cup team operating in a commercial sponsorship market. While a subsequent audit investigation cleared the team, much of the media mud stuck.

Hostilities resumed as soon as the team crossed the finish line to win the America's Cup for the fourth time. Instead of being a celebration of a glorious win, the very entitled mainstream media storylines that night were all about how the Cup could be headed offshore.

It was no surprise that the exclusive three month negotiation period between Team, Council and Government broke up without an agreement. The cash Event Hosting Fee of $31million was $9million less than that paid for the 2021 Cup. It was an offer that was sure to be declined.
