Funding agreement in place for Marseille sailing venue
Paris 2024 President Tony Estanguet has confirmed financing for the Olympic sailing venue in Marseille has been completed on a visit to the city.

French newspaper L'Equipe reported last month that the funding protocol was still under discussion, with politicians still determining responsibilities.

The project's estimated total cost is €41 million.

Solideo, the state-owned company in charge of the construction projects for Paris 2024, have committed supplying €25 million.

This comprises of a €20 million contribution from Marseille, as well as €5 million from the French state.

It was reported last month that the Bouches-du-Rhone department and Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur region could provide the remaining €16 million of funding for land and maritime upgrades.

Estanguet, who is on a two-day visit to the French city, confirmed an agreement has been reached on funding.

Seahorse Sailor Of The Month
This month's nominees:

Funding agreement in place for Marseille sailing venue Rodion Luka (UKR)
Where to begin. We are still receiving nominations ranging from the entire Ukrainian sailing community to their 2020 Olympic Team. Others have been more personal which makes the task of choosing harder still. But Rodion Luka has accomplished great things in both the sport and the industry, creating some brilliant boats, winning an Olympic medal… and often being found at the centre of the best parties at popular regattas. So spirit and great achievement.

Funding agreement in place for Marseille sailing venue Dr Eng. Mori (JPN)
Having loyally backed the tenacious and determined Vendée Globe sailor Kojiro Shiraishi through thick and thin, and committing to back him again in the next race in 2024, Dr Eng. Masahiko Mori has now gone much further, launching the DMG Mori Sailing Academy, to bring on new Japanese sailing talent but also to encourage youngsters to combine sailing with the study of engineering - the passion and profession which underpins this brilliant entrepreneur's great success

Funding agreement in place for Marseille sailing venue Last Month's winner:
Hugo Davies (NZL)

Harken Harken has been building hardware for 50+ years. We get excellent suggestions all the time for new products we should design. Some of those become best sellers in our catalog. And then, there's a group of products that are very slight, purposeful, sometimes even obscure adaptations of that stuff. Not everyone knows it, but we sell them at catalog, not custom, prices and carefully include them in the collection we call Peter's Desk Drawer. He's out of town. So we're sliding the drawer open.

Perhaps a boat builder requested a modification for a new design. Maybe there's something in there just perfect for that traveler challenge you have. You never know what you'll find in the drawer. (If you only knew...)

Money Ball
Brad Pitt echoed something of the Tom Blackaller in the film Moneyball when he delivered the famous line as Billy Beane: "I hate losing more than I love winning." And it feels almost apt for the whirlwind crusade that Grant Dalton is on right now around the various venues and options for AC37.

The desire to deliver a next-level event whilst winning in dramatic, devastating fashion and delivering on the promise of Team New Zealand is what's driving this grittily determined leader and to hell with romantic sentiment. Pictured in the Spanish media, surrounded by the bigwigs of Barcelona 2040, a non-profit organisation that's dialled into promoting the cultural, sporting and economic benefits of the autonomous Catalan capital, you can see the pressure he's under.

Local media reported this flying visit with usual triumphalism, almost as if the deal were done. "From the World Trade Center, the visit began in the same facilities of the port. Its president, Damià Calvet, the first deputy mayor of the Barcelona City Council, Jaume Collboni, the president of Barcelona Global, Aurora Catà, and the CEO of Barcelona&Partners (the agency linked to the Barcelona Global business lobby) led the Barcelona delegation. All of them embarked late in the morning, to see from the sea the spaces where the Sailing America Cup (sic) could take place, where the technical zone would be located, the space for the teams, for the public..."

And then the crucial paragraph: "After lunch, the work continued with another meeting in which other aspects were addressed, including the financial one. It should be noted that in addition to the port, both the City Council and the Generalitat de Catalunya and the Barcelona Provincial Council consider that the America's Cup is a great opportunity for the city."

Rescued Golden Globe 2018 sailor Abhilash Tomy re-enters 2022 GGR

Abhilash Tomy Indian sailor Abhilash Tomy was an entrant in the 50th Anniversary edition of the Golden Globe, a solo non-stop race around the world which started from Les Sables d'Olonne France on July 1st 2018. He was rescued after 83 days at sea following a complex international effort.

Abhilash was sailing an exact replica of [ Sir Robin Knox-Johnston's} Suhail, named "THURIYA" also built in India.

He was running third in the race when an extreme storm deep in the Southern Indian Ocean rolled and dismasted his yacht, severely injuring his back and unable to move his legs. Trapped below, he sent a short text message to race control and turned his EPIRB on. Then all communication was lost.

Half way between Australia and South Africa, the disabled yacht was as far from rescue as anyone could be. Three and a half days later, a French Government fisheries patrol vessel OSIRIS arrived at the scene. In difficult conditions the crew were able to recover Abhilash in a stretcher. He was later transferred to an Indian Navy vessel sent to recover him and two days after arriving in India titanium rods were inserted in his spine and 5 vertebrae were fused into one.

"My legs were so badly off that I had to learn to walk again". Said Abhilash "But I did learn to walk, and then got into a cockpit and got back to Navy flying, and sailing! Now three and a half years later, I am heading back into the same race."

Today at the Dubai Expo 2020, Abhilash announced his sponsor Bayanat and official entry in the 2022 Golden Globe Race. Bayanat, a G42 company specializing in AI-powered geospatial intelligence, confirmed its sponsorship. "

2022 WASZP Americas Championship
The first ever WASZP Americas Championship took place at Richmond Yacht Club, California from 17-20 March. Foilers from 7 countries took to the iconic San Francisco Bay for four days of electric high-speed racing in perfect conditions.

The Slalom event took place on 17 March. This innovative format consists of a solely downwind race in a knockout format. Every sailor was guaranteed at least three races, with the final of the three forming the start of the knockout stages.

Following the Slalom, competitors had the unique chance to head over to the SailGP tech site ahead of the SailGP Grand Final in San Francisco this week. Skipper of the French team, Quentin Delapierre, welcomed the WASZP fleet onto the French F50 for an in-depth tour of the boat. Some of the youngsters in the fleet had their sights set on the SailGP Inspire Grand Final, also taking place this week in line with SailGP.

The Americas championship title was decided from three days of classic windward/leeward racing from 18-20 March.

Three races were sailed on the final day. The standout performer of the day was Gavin Ball from Hawaii, who scored a second and a first in the final two races to pull himself up to the podium for the Americas sailors. Ross Banham from the UK did enough to sneak ahead of Reed Baldridge to take fourth in the open event. Zeltner and Framis Harguindey put in impressive performances to keep their title hopes alive, but in the end JP Lattanzi couldn't be shaken. The 17-year-old continued to score consistent results at the top of the fleet to seal the win in world-class fashion. The Hawaiians are really showing what they can do thanks to their hard work and tight training group and JP Lattanzi has sailed himself into the spotlight as one of the USA's future sailing stars.

5‍0 Years Of ISORA - 2022 Season
ISORA has been organizing offshore racing in the Irish Sea since 1972.

After the last two very strange seasons, when cross channel races were not possible, ISORA is planning a full calendar of Coastal and Offshore racing in its 50th season.

The full calendar includes 15 races, 7 traditional offshores and 8 coastal races - 4 on the Irish side and 4 on the Welsh side.

There are several changes planned to the racing in 2022. These include the pre-setting of offshore courses and the use of staggered starts. For 2022, the offshore races have their courses set and will not be altered due to weather conditions, good or bad. It is hopes that this will result in boats gaining more experience in night racing. We are also using staggered start times for all races, where the lower rated boats will start earlier. It is hoped that this will bunch the boats towards the finish of the races and this will facilitate all boats to take part in the social après-race activities.

In promoting Offshore Racing, we have joined up with the Offshore Racing Academy who have compiled a series of "Zoom" seminars relating to offshore racing. Details of these seminars can be found on their website

The main offshore racing events this season is the Round Ireland Race and the Kingstown to Queenstown Race. The ISORA racing calendar was also planned around providing experience to boats and crew in preparation for these events.

Chief Racer Officer for Kiel Week
Pinar Pinar Cošcuner Genç from Istanbul is in charge of the races in Marseille 2024: Olympic PRO also engaged in Kiel Her vita shows a life dedicated to and with the sport of sailing to the core. International Race Officer Pinar Cošcuner Genç (50) has officiated at Paralympic and two Olympic sailing competitions and will lead them at the Paris Games 2024. The organizers of Kiel Week have also recruited the turkish woman as chief race officer alongside Fabian Bach as local PRO.

When World Sailing appointed her as the Principal Race Officer of the 2024 Olympic Sailing Competitions at the beginning of February, the invitation from Kiel Week was not long in coming. Pinar Cošcuner Genç immediately complied with the request of the organizing team headed by Dirk Ramhorst to also become the international PRO of the regattas on the Kiel Fjord out of full conviction: 'Bringing the plans for Marseille to the most important regatta in the world is a fantastic opportunity.'

The top-class official from Istanbul has the best memories of Kiel Week. In 2016, she was there as a judge and not only the flair and the great time on the fjord left a lasting impression. She was also impressed by the high level of racing, both in terms of sport and organization. 'Kiel always meets the highest standards and is open to new competition formats,' says Cošcuner Genç, who mentions the courses for iQ-Foiling with long laylines as an example.

Being an active sailor since the age of five, the New Year's child came to offshore sailing via the Cadet class, the Pirate and national squad member in the 470. She is currently the sail trimmer on a Farr 40. She represented the olympic race course of the 470s in a leading role last year in Japan. Now she is the PRO for all sailing disciplines in Paris 2024 and also at Kiel Week at least until then.

Warsash Spring Series supported by Helly Hansen, Week 2
On the Spring Equinox the day started with a minutes silence in tribute to Chris Wozencroft, who unexpectedly died on Friday. "Wozie" was a long-time member of the Warsash Spring Series Committee, providing Crackerjack as White Group Committee Boat and more recently was our Chairman. Crackerjack and it's race support team were regular contributors on many Solent sailing events and will be sadly missed.

The race team were slightly rejigged this week with Peter Bateson unable to attend and Nigel Rennie taking charge on the water. The forecast was for Easterly veering to South Easterly during the start sequence so a number of options were produced that would fan around during the morning. We also had another 1st as MySmartMark asked us to trial their new autonomous racing mark, using it as the pin-end of the start line.

With the course pivoting to around Paul Heys and the wind starting to veer toward 110 degrees, Plan B clicked in with Howden Fastnet providing the windward mark 2 miles away, then swinging around to Ancasta for subsequent legs as it turned SE, Class 3 using Contessa 32 Class to slightly shorten the course.

Combined Class 1 and 2 got away to a brisk start with the leeward legs gybing both sides of the course. Class 3 switched to the pre-laid fixed Green pin mark as the Smartmark had a slight positioning wobble with the wind over tide and all classes were clean away.

The 2 hour race saw winners for Jiraffe in Class 1, Mojo Risin' in Class 2 and J'ronimo in Class 3. The Alacrity 18 Ipqu-Aya bringing up the tail of the fleet to complete just within the Finishing Window.

The entries are still open and coming in for the Series / Championships, come and join the fun for some fantastic Spring Racing.
