St. Barth's Bucket: Day Four: Racing Cancelled but Plenty to Say
Somewhat repeating yesterday's order of events, a wind delay on the water (of one hour) preceded what was to be 30 pursuit starts for as many superyachts competing here for the 35th edition of the St. Barths Bucket. Different was the sense of finality, since this was the last day of the four-day regatta, which started with two races on Thursday for three historic J-Class boats and continued with one race on Friday and one on Saturday for the J-Class boats plus six more classes of extraordinary sailing machines, ranging from 28 to 60 metres in length and towering seemingly into the stratosphere with their massive rigs.

In the end, any last-race tension was all for naught. The J-Class boats started, only to have their race abandoned after a few short legs on the "Wrong Way" (clockwise) race around the island scheduled for all. Soon after, the Race Committee abandoned racing for all other classes before they had started. The reason: winds exceeding 25 knots and reaching into the battering 30s on the far side of the island.

With that, all scores from yesterday stand for today and serve as final for the regatta.

A first-timer was Rosehearty's skipper Paul Goodison, notably an accomplished small boat sailor (Laser Olympic Gold Medalist, three-time Moth World champion). "First time at the Bucket, first time in St. Barths, and first time on a Perini," said Goodison. "It was a real eye opener to do something different from what I'm used to. The key to our success was three good days of practice beforehand. We identified some problems and came up with solutions and had a great game plan going into the regatta." The 56 metre Perini Navi, which handily won both races in her series, also won her Les Grandes Dames des Mers class in 2019, the last time this event was sailed.

Symmetry, a 39 metre Frers sloop, finished 2-1 in L'Esprit de Mer, a Corinthian Spirit class that gives owners an option of sailing without spinnakers and insuring a more relaxed approach to enjoying all that a superyacht regatta has to offer.

Ranger roll out Saint Barth's J Class Winners
The combination of an enthusiastic owner who is brand new to sailboat racing and a vastly experienced crew who gelled together perfectly at their first ever J Class Yacht regatta proved a winning combination as Ranger clinched the Saint Barth's Bucket J Class title today after the round the island contest was abandoned mid-way through.

Under America's Cup winning skipper-helm Ed Baird, who himself was steering a J Class yacht regatta for the first time, Ranger finished one point clear of Hanuman and Velsheda after four races were sailed.

It is Ranger's best J Class regatta finish since 2011 when under her original owner and team - they won in Newport although in 2016 the boat finished second at Saint Barth's on countback to Hanuman.

This replica Ranger was built out of steel in Denmark 2002-3 as the first of the 'replica' J's, constructed to the original Starling Burgess and Olin Stephens lines of Harold Vanderbilt's 'Super J' which won the 1937 America's Cup 4-0 against Endeavour 2.

The next J Class regatta will be the Palma Superyacht Cup in Mallorca 29 June to 2nd July followed by the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup in Porto Cervo, Sardinia 4-10 September.

Final results after 4 races
1. Ranger 2,4,1,1 8pts
2. Hanuman 1,2,4,2 9pts
3. Velsheda 3,1,2,3 9pts

GORI Propeller Launch 3-Blade-Folding Propeller for Saildrives
GORI Propeller GORI Propeller has launched a 3-blade folding propeller specifically for saildrive units to help customers reach their goal of less drag and ultimately greater efficiencies.

"We have seen an increase in customers choosing saildrive units over the traditional shaft drives. We have now evolved our popular 3-blade propeller so those with a saildrive unit can reap the benefits," comments Lars Østergaard, Senior Vice President Sales for GORI Propeller.

The GORI 3-Blade Propeller is a favoured choice. Key features include it's the lowest drag of all 3-blade sailboat propellers, it operates at the same pitch in forward and reverse (blades pivot 180 degrees) and it has superior stopping power (same pitch forward & reverse). The propeller sizes go from 22" thru 26" in diameter and are available in the standard version with overdrive (two pitches in forward), and the single pitch version. The new propeller has been introduced to suit the ZF SD15 saildrive.

The first installations have taken place, and the new full carbon, GUNBOAT 80, will have 110 hp Yanmar engines with saildrive and two 3-blade 24" GORI Propellers.

GORI is known for high quality, high performance folding propellers, and is the preferred supplier for Nautor Swan, Baltic Yachts, Hallberg Rassy & Dehler Yachts amongst others. The Ultime multi-hulls, Lazartigue, Groupama III, Baron de Rothchild, Idec Sport and Sodebo 3 all have GORI, as do all new IMOCA 60s in build for the upcoming around the world races.

Charleston Race Week is back in full force
Coronavirus canceled the iconic spring regatta in 2020, while the ongoing pandemic forced organizers to hold a scaled-back event in 2021. With conditions improving throughout the United States, event director Randy Draftz is pleased to announce that Charleston Race Week 2022 will showcase a return to normal.

A fleet of more than 200 boats in 15 classes is expected to descend upon this famous southern coastal city for the 27th edition of Charleston Race Week, being held April 28-May 1.

Among the notable sailors set to compete are renowned professionals and former Rolex Yachtsman and Yachtswoman of the Year – Cory Sertl and Terry Hutchinson. Sertl will be racing in the RS21 class, while Hutchinson will be skippering an entry in J/70 class. Laura Grondin, who was on the short list for the 2022 Rolex Yachtswoman of the Year award, will be one of the favorites in talent-laden J/70 class with her strong team featuring Taylor Canfield.

As always, Charleston Race Week will be providing expert advice, instruction and analysis to all competitors. Daily weather briefings sponsored by Quantum will be streamed online each morning. Leandro Spina, Olympic Development Program director for US Sailing, will conduct daily debriefs after racing is complete. -- Bill Wanger

Italian Francesco Cerina is the 43rd entry in the Global Solo Challenge
Francesco Cerina The thirty-two-year-old Francesco Cerina from Nuoro in Sardinia is the youngest entry so far in the Global Solo Challenge. Until now it was British entry William Croxford. Both were born in '89. In his interview he tells us that he cannot boast a prestigious racing CV but that he loves sailing very much. As a child he started sailing Optimists and on his family boat.

Today he is passionate about Moths, with which he is learning a lot, and has a G34, the One-Design Finot used for the Giro d 'Italia a Vela organised by Cino Ricci, that he could modify and prepare. He confesses that however, if there was an opportunity, he would like to upgrade to a Class40 that would, however, require an important sponsor. We are pleased to welcome the fourth Italian entry after the announcement of Riccardo Tosetto's participation last week.

What brought you to like single-handed sailing?
The fact that you don't have to arrange things with other people. When sailing solo you are the mastermind of everything. It happened to me too many times to have to cancel everything because of others, after many sacrifices. So I decided that when you want to do something, you have to roll up your sleeves and get on with it.

What prompted you to sign up for this event?
Let's just say I'm a lover of challenges. In addition... There are some things you feel like doing, this is one of them.

The Ocean Race Summit Seychelles calls on world to unite to protect the ocean
World leaders, ministers, sailors, scientists and ocean advocates gathered in the Seychelles today to call for greater global action and collaboration to protect the ocean.

Mr. Wavel Ramkalawan, President of the Republic of the Seychelles, spoke about his concern for the ocean, its vital role in sustaining all life on Earth and the need to unite in taking urgent action to protect it: "The survival of this planet depends on each one of us pulling together exactly as the participants in The Ocean Race do. It is teamwork that will ensure the survival of our planet."

The President praised female leaders in conservation and youth, who are striving to protect the seas. He also spoke about how the country is leading the way in taking action: "The Seychelles is punching above its weight. Small as we are, we are protecting 30% of our ocean. We are committed to protecting the ocean, but we cannot do it alone. We ask the world to join us in saving our ocean and saving our planet."

The Ocean Race Summit Seychelles was held in the country to reflect the vital role that island nations - also known as Big Ocean States - at the forefront of the climate crisis can play in driving awareness and action. A key theme that emerged from the Summit was a greater need for collaboration, with island nations, and others, reinforcing that they alone cannot protect the ocean.

The Summit was organised by The Ocean Race, the world's toughest test of a team in sport and an industry leader in sustainability, and 11th Hour Racing, an international organisation that mobilises sailing, maritime and coastal communities with an innovative approach to inspire solutions for the ocean. Held in collaboration with the Danny Faure Foundation and hosted by the Republic of the Seychelles, The Summit sought to address the lack of governance and protection for our seas, the impact of climate change on the ocean and examine whether the ocean should be given rights.

Addressing the Summit, Richard Brisius, Race Chairman of The Ocean Race said: "As a sailor you get this special bond with the ocean. In sport we like fair play and fair rules, but there is no fair play for the ocean. We need sharper governance and management, which we can create through a Universal Declaration of Ocean Rights - a rule book that allows the ocean to thrive. If this is enabled we will see a paradigm shift for ocean conservation.

Reminds me that 40 or more years ago the person who wrote up the 'shouts' of RNLI crews for their members' magazine always gave a master class in succinct accuracy with a wonderful style. "From this point on, things became distinctly easier as the wind moderated to a Force 10". They were brilliant to read.
