Superyacht Challenge Antigua After four days of exciting racing, the 11th edition of the Superyacht Challenge Antigua concluded with the Prize Giving held at the Admiral's Inn Nelson's Dockyard. The Round Antigua Race and Superyacht Challenge Series were held in strong winds for all but the last race of the regatta.

Class winners for the 2022 Superyacht Challenge Antigua were: The 112ft Baltic Nilaya, with Filip Balcaen at the helm. The 218ft Dykstra/Reichel Pugh ketch Hetairos, skippered by Graham Newton, and the 121ft Dyksra sloop Action, skippered by Josh Gilchrist. John McMonigall's Oyster 82 Zig Zag, is skippered by Carl Raynes, was awarded the Pendennis Trophy.

Winners at the Superyacht Challenge Antigua receive barrels of rum, suitably filled. The Gosnell Trophy is the only trophy awarded and goes to the yacht, who in the opinion of the competitors and race committee, has competed in the Spirit of the Regatta, both afloat and ashore.

The Gosnell Trophy went to The 140ft German Frers ketch Rebecca skippered by Rob Foxell.

VO65 Sailing Poland takes top spot at the St Maarten Heineken Regatta
The St Maarten Heineken Regatta, the second challenge in the International Maxi Association's new four legged event Caribbean Maxi Challenge saw VO65 Sailing Poland take the top spot on Sunday. The event follows on from February's RORC Caribbean 600.

The competitors this year recall the event with a wry smile and brag about "how they survived it" as conditions were against them.

Chris Sherlock, skipper of the Farr 100 Leopard 3 described it best, "We had 35 knots at the start. It was probably the hairiest start in my 27 years being involved with the Leopard program and probably the hairiest day's sailing for an inshore regatta, but we loved it!"

The brisk conditions saw the prevailing boats being those that are geared up for sailing around the planet. The regatta attracts many former Volvo Ocean Race yachts and competing around the four day ultra-lively course this year were four VO70s and four VO65s. As well as this saw Farr 100 Leopard 3 and Botin 85 Deep Blue compete for the win. But it was the V065s and VO70s that took the podium spots, separated by just one point after four races. -- Sophie Spicknell in Superyacht Times

Golden Globe Race - Starts 4 September
The Golden Globe Race is a single-handed, non-stop round-the-world race, with no assistance, no GPS and no modern electronics on board. The adventure will start on 4 September 2022.

23 sailors from all over the world will embark on an adventure of a lifetime for more than 200 days - away from the rest of the world, navigating with a sextant only.

A New Course: 4 Compulsory Film Drop Points To Share Their Incredible Adventure

In the last edition, the competitors had to go around two compulsory rounding marks: Lanzarote and Hobart. This year, the course has been modified with two additional marks: Cape Town in South Africa and Punta del Este in Uruguay.

The skippers will be able to drop their recorded videos and photos at these four gates without getting in contact with anyone and without docking, allowing them to share their incredible adventure and us to hear their latest stories.

In 1968-1969, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston won the Sunday Times Golden Globe Race, the first solo, non-stop, round-the-world race in history, sailing for 312 days.

In 2018, 50 years later, this legendary adventure was reborn in Les Sables d'Olonne for a second edition with the same navigation aids as available in 1968. Famous French sailor Jean-Luc Van Den Heede won the race in 211 days.

Some returnees from the last edition will take up the challenge again, like Turkish sailor Ertan Beskardes or Finnish sailor Tapio Lehtinen, who finished 5th in the 2018-2019 edition after 322 days at sea. Australian Mark Sinclair, who was forced to stop in 2018, is currently sailing from Australia to France - finishing his one-stop circumnavigation in April this year just to embark again on a new round the world tour with the GGR 2022 in September.

The other entrants will experience the GGR for the first time, but are no less competitive. Most of them have already sailed around the world several times or have participated in the biggest offshore races: Mini Transat, Figaro, Open 60, Clipper 70…

Shirley Robertson talks to Jason Carrington
Jason Carrington Shirley Robertson's Sailing Podcast this month features one of the most respected names in boat building, as Jason Carrington takes to the mic to discuss his phenomenal career in the sport. Carrington has been at the forefront of high performance boat building for several decades, but as his chat with Robertson reveals, his achievements in the boat shed are more than matched by an impressive career offshore.

Carrington reveals how a childhood spent on the water in Lymington (UK) led to an apprenticeship at the groundbreaking Green Marine, under the tutelage of the pioneering Bill Green himself. It wasn't long before Carrington was impressing as a bow man, and was soon setting off on his first Whitbread attempt on the 1993/94 "Fortuna" campaign with British Whitbread stalwart Lawrie Smith. It was the first of four Whitbred / Volvo campaigns for Carrington, his second seeing him again take on the Round the World race with Smith onboard "Silk Cut"...:

"Sailing with Lawrie was wonderful, I remember my first glimpse of the Southern Ocean, I've never been with anyone that sailed so hard in the Southern Ocean... I was on the handles on deck... Lawrie was in the hatch and I looked and said 'this is crazy' and Lawrie just said "This is when you make the miles!.""

Carrington's tales of sailing the 93/94 and 97/98 Whitbread are told with a very obvious enthusiasm that hides nothing of his love for the camaraderie and hardships of round the world sailing. As the Whitbread transitioned to the Volvo Ocean Race, it's Carrington's memories of building Volvo60 "Assa Abloy" that then begin to reveal a glimpse of the attention to detail he's since become famous for...

This edition of the podcast is in two parts and is available to listen to via the podcast page of Shirley's own website, at www.shirleyrobertson.com/podcast or via most popular podcast outlets, including Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcast and aCast.

Boat Renovations And Restorations 101

Marilee There's an intangible, but visceral feeling we get when we hear the rumble of the engine and smell the exhaust of a Porsche 911 2.7 Carrera RS or view the way the bow of 1962 Riva Aquarama cuts through the water. It's almost hard to put into words other than to say it's magical. And despite the best efforts of the modern design world, there's just something about the classics that can't be replicated or replaced. Some things simply can't be improved upon.

And in the fast-fashion world we live in, where it seems like half of what we buy has been replaced with a newer version before we leave the store, it gives us a good feeling to keep something old going, or better yet, to bring something from the past back to life.

In 2014, French & Webb and Kurt Hasselbalch, curator of the MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) Hart Nautical Collections, began restoration of Marilee originally built in 1926. In early winter 2014 they began with a 3D scan of the existing hull. This, combined with a CAD drawing created from the original Herreshoff plans, enabled the team to accurately examine Marilee's current shape and compare it with the design from 1926.

Cork Week's Latest Entry List Swells to 110 Boats
The Cork Week entry list for July's regatta stands at over 110 boats with 17 weeks still to go before the first gun.

The biggest class so far is the 33-boat 1720s that have their roots in Crosshaven. Royal Cork organisers say entries for this sportsboat division show 'no sign of slowing'.

There are 30 IRC boats already entered and ten boats have also entered the coastal offshore discipline.

"The IRC entries are building throughout the classes and no doubt the growing Quarter Tonner movement in the Royal Cork will draw in top-class racing for smaller boats too", Royal Cork state.

In what will be one of the first showings of the new class in Ireland, three Cape 31s are also listed in the one-design entry; RCYC's own Antix together with Blast from the Royal Irish and Valkyrie from Howth.

Up to 20 French Classic Yachts Expected for Cork Week 2022
Royal Cork's Paris Boat Show announcement last December that there is to be a dedicated Classics Class at Volvo Cork Week has been receiving a steady uptake of entries.

As Afloat reported earlier, a former famous Morning Cloud yacht from the UK will compete in Cork Harbour and more recently, the club has announced it is expecting up to 20 yachts from France.

Last December, Pascal Stefani, President of the Atlantic Yacht Club, with the support of the Yacht Club de France, announced that they were arranging "Goto Cork 2022", a movement which will entail up to 20 yachts heading to Cork via the Scillies to participate.

A delegation from AYC has since been to Cork to prepare for their visit in July.

Local classics are also entered, including Terry Birles' 'Erin' who was one of the first entries for the new Classic division.

Shrek is back!
Matt Gotrel Matt Gotrel, Rio 2016 Olympic gold medallist rower, has re-signed with INEOS Britannia as a sailor for the team's 37th America's Cup campaign. This is Matt's second consecutive America's Cup campaign for the British team, having previously been a grinder onboard the AC75 during the 36th America's Cup in Auckland.

After representing Great Britain at the Olympics, it has always been a point of pride for Gotrel to continue to represent his home country.

It was during his first year at university that Matt began rowing and started a remarkable journey from novice to Olympic champion, ending his university days by winning the illustrious Henley Royal Regatta and joining the British Olympic Rowing team. From team spare in his first year, he went on to win two successive World Championship gold medals as part of the British Men's Eight, in 2014 and 2015 before realising his dream of Olympic gold in Rio 2016.

Matt's depth of experience and success in both rowing and sailing will be key in powering the racing AC75 boat. With the announcement of the return of optional 'cyclors' onboard for the 37th America's Cup, Gotrel has recently been adding a significant amount of cycling training to his regime. That transition from upper body dominant grinding to lower body dominant cycling to power the boat requires a change in training and physique to create the same, if not more, power.
