Skiff Sydney Harbour: The Andoo team of Seve Jarvin, Matt Stenta and Sam Newton officially became the 2022 JJ Giltinan 18ft Skiff champion, although it was in an unbeatable position before going into today's final race of the championship on Sydney Harbour.

Andoo's victory gave Seve Jarvin his ninth win, eight as a skipper, in the world's most valued 18ft skiff championship and bowman Sam Newton his seventh. For sheet hand Matt Stenta, who joined the team this season, it was his first in the 18s. after winning the Australian 16 footer championship two years ago.

It was a remarkable performance by the talented trio who dominated the championship with five consecutive victories in the first five races completed in the regatta. The team's only losses, when runner-up to Noakesailing and Finport Finance, in the two races held last Friday assured it of the title before going into today's final race of the championship.

The performance was so dominant that the team also took out the handicap section of the championship.

The final overall points had Andoo on nine points, followed by Tech2 Jack Macartney, Charlie Wyattand Lewis Brake) on 24 points, Rag & Famish Hotel (Harry Price, Josh McKnight and Harry Hall) on 37, Noakesailing (Sean Langman) on 45, Lazarus Capital Partners (Marcus Ashley-Jones) on 55.4 and defending champion Smeg (Michael Coxon) on 59

In today's race, which was sailed in a very light SE breeze, the Andoo team once again proved their class with another brilliant performance to defeat a fast-finishing Rag & Famish Hotel by 2m53s, with Noakesailing (Sean Langman, Ed Powys and Josh Porebski) a further 8s back in third place.

The traditional 'Queen of the Harbour' race next sunday is the final race of the league's 2021-22 season -- Frank Quealey, Australian 18 Footers League Ltd.

JJ Giltinan Final Race

Mateusz Kusznierewicz / Bruno Prada Create Bacardi Cup History
For nearly one century, the Bacardi Cup has continued to attract the world's top sailors and fans with its popularity and intrigue. In 2022, the Bacardi Cup celebrated its 95th anniversary on Biscayne Bay, its home for the past 61 years. In the fifty-eight-boat line-up were eleven previous Bacardi Cup winners and twelve World Champions - competition doesn't get tougher than that.

The stars of the show were unequivocally Mateusz Kusznierewicz (POL) and Bruno Prada (BRA), who showed themselves as most prepared for the physicality, intensity and tactics of racing in waves and a breeze which never dropped below 12 knots. Many sailors have won multiple Bacardi Cup titles - the legendary Ding Schoonmaker scooped eight victories, seven to Mark Reynolds, and some renowned partnerships have two wins - but Bacardi Cup history is written for Kusznierewicz/Prada who go down as the first same team partnership to win three back-to-back titles.

Second overall to Eric Doyle/Payson Infelise (USA) who were the 2019 Bacardi Cup winners, and third to Italy's Diego Negri/Sergio Lambertenghi who won in 2018, with a tiebreak for 4th and 5th.

Although victory was secure, Kusznierewicz/Prada had every intention of competing in the final race, before the excessive winds scuppered plans.

Prizes were presented to the top five boats, and also to winners in the age divisions:

Master (skippers aged 50 through 59) - Eric Doyle/Payson Infelise
Grand Master (skippers aged 60+) - Paul Cayard/Frithjof Kleen
Exalted Grand Master (skippers aged 70+) - Stefan Lehnert/Marc Pickel

Final Top 5 Results
1. Mateusz Kusznierewicz/Bruno Prada (POL 8548) - 6 pts
2. Eric Doyle/Payson Infelise (USA 8423) - 12 pts
3. Diego Negri/Sergio Lambertenghi (ITA 8567) - 14 pts
4. Peter O'Leary/Robert O'Leary (IRL 8465) - 21 pts
5. Eivind Melleby/Joshua Revkin (NOR 8543) - 21 pts

M32 Class: Big Wind and Big Smiles in Miami
Team Surge have for the last events been fighting a bit behind the top boats but are now back on the podium. "After a long drought, I was happy to be back on the podium. We've been working to be more methodical and diligent with our approach to practice and plan to keep improving." says Ryan McKillen on team Surge after the second Miami Winter Series event for the M32 fleet.

Team Inga from Sweden with skipper Richard Goransson and tactician Chris Draper, used to being among the top boats, ended up mid-fleet in the fierce competition. Check out the start and full race of on board and drone video of Inga and hearing Mark Bulkley making the breeze calls.

Winning the event was Convexity with skipper Don Wilson 3 points ahead of REV with Rick and Ryan DeVoss. At the leaderboard for the series Convexity still sits at the top with a few points margin. Chasing for the win and to lift the Rooster Trophy is three teams. Rick & Ryan Devoss with tactician Ian Willams followed closely by Inga from Sweden with Richard Goransson and Surge with Ryan McKillen. It will all be decided in the last event of the winter series April 1-3.

Sailing Yacht A Seized by Italy
Bergamo, Italy: Italian police have seized a superyacht owned by Russian billionaire Andrey Igorevich Melnichenko, the prime minister's office said on Saturday, a few days after the businessman was placed on an EU sanctions list following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The 143-metre (470-foot) Sailing Yacht A, which has a price tag of 530 million euros ($578 million), has been sequestered at the northern port of Trieste, the government said.

Designed by Philippe Starck and built by Nobiskrug in Germany, the vessel is the world's biggest sailing yacht, the government said.

Melnichenko owned major fertiliser producer EuroChem Group and coal company SUEK. The companies said in statements on Thursday that he had resigned as a member of the board in both companies and withdrawn as their beneficiary, effective Wednesday.

A spokesperson for Melnichenko, Alex Andreev, said the businessman had "no relation to the tragic events in Ukraine. He has no political affiliations".

Since last week Italian police have seized villas and yachts worth more than 700 million euros ($763.63 million) from high-profile Russians who have been placed on the EU sanctions list, Economy Minister Daniele Franco said on Saturday.

Focus on The Sailing Trawlers of Ringsend at Cormac Lowth Lecture in Dun Laoghaire's Maritime Museum

Sailing Trawlers of Ringsend Maritime historian Cormac Lowth will present the final talk in The National Maritime Museum's winter series when he discusses the Sailing Trawlers of Ringsend on Thursday, 24th March at 7.30 pm.

For one hundred years, from 1818 until 1919, there was a large fleet of sailing trawlers based in Ringsend, moored along the Pigeonhouse Road. At its height, there were about seventy of these vessels in Ringsend.

Over the century there were about three hundred of them in all. The first of the boats came from Brixham in Devon, and many of the crews settled in Ringsend and intermarried with the locals. Many descendants still live there today. A great many of the subsequent fleet were built in Ringsend in the boatyards on the Dodder.

Cormac will be describing the arrival of the boats, their fishing activity, the people who crewed in them, wrecks collisions and losses, and much more. He will also be discussing the activities of many of the boat builders who built the trawlers in Ringsend.

The Pioneers Of The Crewed Round The World Race
A series of features celebrating the strong French heritage of The Ocean Race. Produced in cooperation with IMOCA, these stories highlight 50 years of the 'French Connection' dating back to the inception of the Whitbread Round the World Race in 1973...

In a year's time, they'll be riding the Indian Ocean swell in The Ocean Race where the IMOCA class is making its race debut, alongside the familiar VO65 one-designs. Spanning 12,750 miles, or 23,613 km, never before has one leg – between Cape Town in South Africa and Itajaí in Brazil – been so long. Fifty years ago, sailors from all different backgrounds were competing in the very first crewed sprint around the planet known as the Whitbread Round the World Race. Half a century on, IMOCA and The Ocean Race are rekindling their ties with this crazy epic in a bid to continue its legacy.

On 8 September 1973, nineteen sailboats from seven nations, a third of which were French, set sail from Portsmouth and the green waters of the Solent bound for South Africa. Not only was the atmosphere imbued with the inherent stress of any race start, but also a hefty dose of the unknown as the sailors had to negotiate a 27,000-mile sea passage, punctuated by the Roaring Forties and the Furious Fifties in the Indian and then the Pacific Ocean.

The story goes that a few years earlier, the former aviator Sir Francis Chichester, winner at sixty years of age of the first OSTAR, some four years before Eric Tabarly's triumph, came up with the idea of a crewed round-the-world race with some of the UK's leading lights, including Robin Knox-Johnston, winner of the Golden Globe in 1969, and Admiral Otto Steiner. It was known as the Whitbread Round the World Race as it was sponsored by the famous British brewer. This first marathon around the planet comprised four long legs from Portsmouth and back via Cape Town, Sydney and Rio.
