18ft Skiffs 2022 JJ Giltinan Championship, Races 5 and 6
Click on image for photo gallery.

18ft Skiffs Sydney Harbour: Strong winds sweeping across Sydney Harbour forced race officials to reduce today's racing program in the 2022 JJ Giltinan 18ft Skiff Championship from the scheduled two races, to one race, sailed over a specially designed storm course.

As the strength of the winds eased, the race got away in a 20-knot SSW wind and there was non-stop action throughout.

Once again, it was the strong Andoo team of Seve Jarvin, Matt Stenta and Sam Newton which proved to be the master of the conditions to record its third consecutive win from the three races sailed so far and leads the championship with a perfect score of three points.

Tech2 (Jack Macartney, Charlie Wyatt and Lewis Brake) also continued her consistency with three consecutive second placings behind Andoo, and only trails by three points in the overall standings.

In today's race, Andoo grabbed the lead after the early leaders capsized and raced away to win by 3m15s from Tech2 with Rag & Famish Hotel (Harry Price, Josh McKnight and Harry Hall) a further 3m5s back in third place.

Fisher & Paykel (Jordan Girdis) finished strongly over the final two legs of the course to come home in fourth place, ahead of Yandoo (John Winning) and Queensland's C-Tech (Dave Hayter).

Andoo has a score of 3 points, followed by Tech2 on 6 points, Rag & Famish Hotel on 12, Yandoo and Lazarus Capital Partners (Marcus Ashley-Jones) both on 23 and The Oak Double Bay-4 Pines (Aron Everett) and Fisher & Paykel both on 28 points.

Scheduled races and re-sail of any abandoned races will be sailed over the next four days: March 10, 11, 12 and 13

Bacardi Stars
The Star Class leader board ended the same as yesterday's opener, with defending Bacardi Cup Champions Mateusz Kusznierewicz/Bruno Prada again dominating the fifty-eight boat fleet for their second win in two races.

Race 2 of the 95th Bacardi Cup got underway on attempt number two, after a bunch of ambitious teams in the middle of the line forced the Race Committee to a general recall. A perfect day delivered as good as Star Class racing gets, with a consistent south-easterly breeze of around 12-15 knots, waves serving up full hiking upwind legs and super surfing conditions downwind for the 110 minutes, 9 nautical mile race.

Behind Kusznierewicz/Prada, it is tiebreak between Eric Doyle/Payson Infelise (USA), who won here in 2019, and brothers Peter O'Leary/Robert O'Leary (IRL) who sit on 5 points apiece, having matched each other's scores across the two races. 2018 Bacardi Cup victors Diego Negri/Sergio Lambertenghi (ITA) are in fourth.

Provisional Top 10 Results - after Race 2
1. Mateusz Kusznierewicz / Bruno Prada (POL 8548) - 2 pts

Ready To Fly At The Bacardi Cup
High performance racing of all speeds will be put to the test in Florida, from the majestic Star class to the planing sports boats such as the J/70, Melges 24, Viper 640 and VX One fleets. Fastest of all will be the newest addition to the Bacardi Cup Invitational Regatta (BCIR), the fully-foiling Persico 69F three-person monohulls.

Racing takes place from 9 to 12 March on Biscayne Bay. It's all races to count, no discard, so there's a great emphasis on consistent performance, the ability to deliver race after race. Built by the world-renowned Persico Marine factory in Italy, the all-carbon Persico 69F has been designed to achieve speeds in excess of 30 knots, yet be stable and easy to handle even by a rookie crew.

Alessandra Angelini had been due to head up an all-Italian crew, Fly Marga, until an injury to her leg forced the female skipper to skip the regatta. She's working hard to get fit and race ready for the European season later this spring. However, Italy will still be represented by Pietro de Luca who is racing with Team MYC (Miami Yacht Club) along with Brian Higgins and Nicolas Aragones. Two Russian crews had been intending to compete but World Sailing sanctions due to the conflict in Ukraine have forced their withdrawal from the regatta.

La Coruna to Cape Finisterre
Tower of Hercules, the oldest active lighthouse in the world.Click on image to enlarge.

Tower of Hercules The city of La Coruna is located to the north-west of the Iberian peninsula, in the municipality of Galicia and its maritime tradition permeating from all its four sides, when walking along its docks, talking to its people, tasting its gastronomy or simply looking at the sea and its ships.

Much of this tradition is undoubtedly represented by the Tower of Hercules, the oldest active lighthouse in the world.

The participants of the Global Solo Challenge will set sail from the port of this beautiful Galician city. With the good preparation put in by the skippers, a bit of luck, thousands of miles and months later, we will find them on their return to this same port.

Tactics are important from the start from the port of La Coruna and to the Sisargas Islands. Competitors will have to make route towards the west paying attention to shallow waters that can generate confused seas and breakers, trying to find a route towards the open sea whilst inching south.

From that point and up to Capo Villano they will head southwest, if the wind allows it. There skippers will have two possibilities, either continue on the same route in search for deep waters where the sea is easier (yet having to deal with shipping and the traffic separation scheme), or pass with a south-southwest route close inshore where the sea can be more uncomfortable, there is more traffic of fishing boats and wind accelerations are frequent near the Torinana and Finisterre headlands.

Whatever choice they make as they pass Cape Finisterre, they will have the open waters of the Atlantic Ocean ahead and, hopefully, make progress with the help Portuguese following trade winds that will accompany them to the south.

It will be only at that moment that they will get a break as they will leave behind the "Death Coast" which required constant chnges of course and permanent attention to shallow waters, fishing vessels, merchants, etc. They will finally be able to ponder the challenge ahead and say to themselves, now yes, I have the world in front of me!

Marseille grandstand for Paris 2024 sailing cancelled over security concerns
Local authorities in Marseille have abandoned the idea of building of a 5,000-seat grandstand for the Paris 2024 Olympic sailing events, citing security concerns.

The construction of the stand on the Corniche was part of the plans laid out by the Paris 2024 Organising Committee, but those at City Hall have rejected the idea, the local newspaper, La Provence, reported.

Samia Ghali, Deputy Mayor in charge of major infrastructure, expressed her "doubts" over the security question.

She added that the risk of an attack would be too great, given that the proposed stand would cover traffic lanes and that vehicles would pass underneath it.

The report added that the new municipality found the project complex and expensive.

An agreement on the financing for development of the 2024 Olympic sailing venue in Marseille is due to be signed later this month Nicolas Ferrand, managing director of Solideo, the public body charged with overseeing insfrastructural Games projects, announced last month. -- Mike Rowbottom

Sir Ernest Shackleton's ship Endurance found
The wreck of the polar explorer's ship has been discovered off the coast of Antarctica, the Falklands Maritime Heritage Trust has announced. Endurance had not been seen since it was crushed by ice and sank in the Weddell Sea in 1915. Last month, 100 years after Shackleton's death, the Endurance22 expedition set off from South Africa to locate the vessel

The "world's most challenging shipwreck search" for one of the greatest legends of exploration history, Sir Ernest Shackleton's Endurance, lost more than a century ago in the icy waters of Antarctica, has succeeded.

The wreck has been found, 3,008 metres below the surface of what Shackleton described as "the worst portion of the worst sea in the world". It was discovered on Saturday, the 100th anniversary of Shackleton's funeral, the Falklands Maritime Heritage Trust said.

Mensun Bound, the expedition's director of exploration, said footage showed the 144ft ship to be intact.

"We are overwhelmed by our good fortune in having located and captured images of Endurance," he said.

"This is by far the finest wooden shipwreck I have ever seen. It is upright, well proud of the seabed, intact, and in a brilliant state of preservation … This is a milestone in polar history."

Schoonmaker Foundation Pledges $5 Million To US Sailing
Ding The Florida-based Schoonmaker Foundation has pledged $5 million over the next five years to the US Sailing Foundation to create the James M. "Ding" Schoonmaker II Project Pinnacle Endowment Fund. They have also offered an additional $2.5 million challenge fund, giving individual donors, businesses, and foundations the opportunity to have their gifts matched dollar-for-dollar, bringing Schoonmaker's gift to a total of $7.5 million and the Endowment to $10 million.

This transformative gift was made in memory of World Champion and National Sailing Hall of Famer, James M. "Ding" Schoonmaker, who passed away in January 2021 at the age of 87. "We are indebted to Ding's wife, Treecie, and the entire Schoonmaker Board for entrusting us with this very special gift," said US Sailing Association CEO Alan Ostfield. "It is an honor to carry on Ding's legacy and engage with additional donors to promote excellence in competitive sailing in his name."

Schoonmaker began sailing at an early age and claimed his first sailing victory when he was just 11. At 19, he placed second in the Olympic trials in the Star class and was named the team's alternate in Helsinki. He earned that honor again in 1964 at the Games in Tokyo. Along the way, Schoonmaker won North American, South American, Western Hemisphere and European Championships, including the 1975 Star World Championship. He also won the Bacardi Cup a record eight times.

Shining a Light on Cork's Morning Clouds
The first and very attractive custom-built Morning Cloud of 1971 vintage, now known as Opposition, heads the lists for the newly-introduced Classics Division in Volvo Cork Week 2022. Click on image to enlarge.

Morning Clouds It's good news that a proper Classics Division is going to be included in Volvo Cork Week in July, and it's even better news that one of the first to step up to the plate is Opposition, the gold standard classic 40ft S & S design which Ted Heath raced to outstanding all-round success in 1971. For although Ted Heath owned five Morning Clouds in all - with the first being the little S&S34 which won the 1969 Sydney-Hobart Race – we need to know which is which, and the 51-year-old boat now known as Opposition was arguably the sweetest of them all, as Olin Stephens took this high-profile opportunity to show what an attractive boat the new International Offshore Rule could create.

But unfortunately, the international offshore scene was expanding at an unhealthy pace, and the backroom number-crunchers in yacht design offices were soon finding that by producing rather extreme and deeply heavy boats with unattractively pinched sterns, you could get a very favourable rating. The third Morning Cloud (mistakenly used to illustrate Opposition in a recent press release) was built expressly for the 1973 Admiral's Cup, and proved to be quite an extreme example of this less healthy hull type.
