Leopard steps on to the IMA Caribbean Maxi Challenge podium
Following one of the biggest wind inshore regattas where racing pressed ahead regardless, this year's St Maarten Heineken Regatta will be one which competitors will recall with a wry smile, bragging about 'how they survived it'. It was also the second of the International Maxi Association's new four event Caribbean Maxi Challenge, following on from February's RORC Caribbean 600.

The four days of racing culminated in Sunday's ultra-lively course around marks starting off the Franco-Dutch Caribbean island's Simpson Bay. As Chris Sherlock, skipper of the Farr 100 Leopard 3 described it: "We had 35 knots at the start. It was probably the hairiest start in my 27 years being involved with the Leopard program and probably the hairiest day's sailing for an inshore regatta…but we loved it!" Quite an admission for a skipper who, since Leopard 3 was launched in 2007, has campaigned her relentlessly across the planet, mainly through Mike Slade's long ownership of her.

Sherlock continued: "It was great fun. 25-26 knots of boat speed downwind. It couldn't have been better." More importantly Leopard 3's enthusiastic Dutch owner also relished it. "He just loved it - driving a 100ft maxi downwind in 25-30 knots, matching wind speed. You don't get it much better than that in t-shirts and shorts…"

In this week's brisk conditions it was the boats geared up for sailing around the planet that prevailed. The event attracts many former Volvo Ocean Race yachts and competing this year were four VO70s and four VO65s. Ultimately it was three of these that owned the podium, separated by just one point after four races. Robert Gwózdz and Marcin Sutkowski's Gdynia-based VO65 Sailing Poland claimed both Saturday and Sunday's races to win on countback from the Jelmer van Beek-skippered Janssen de Jong - DutchSail.

Ironically calling tactics on board Sailing Poland was Volvo Ocean Race legend Bouwe Bekking, who found himself racing against his old steed (Janssen de Jong - DutchSail Bekking had skippered to second and then third place respectively in the last two editions of the fully crewed round the world race as Team Brunel).-- James Boyd

With no racing in Metung for the final day of the Etchells Australian Championship, the leaders after day three, Tango AUS1466 skippered by Chris Hampton, with Cam Miles and Sam Haines are the Etchells Australian Champions for 2022.

"First of all I have to thank Metung Yacht Club for basically saving the Australian National Championship this year," said Hampton when awarded the National Championship and Masters Championship trophies.

The racing was cut short due to the adverse weather conditions today at the Gippsland Lakes. - Nic Douglass

Seahorse Sailor Of The Month
This month's nominees:

Leopard steps on to the IMA Caribbean Maxi Challenge podium Hugo Davies (NZL)
What hope is there for the rest of us? Is it something in the Kiwi drinking water? Team Davies, the old boy on the wire and 10-year-old Hugo on the stick, waltzed their way to this year's Cherub title in New Zealand, ending the 10-race series with a perfect score (yes, they did discard a race win). To runners-up Brad and Merrick, commiserations, that's some hot fleet you got going down there. Hell of a job, Hugo, hell of a job! (And to the Opti parents, maybe join the 21st century?)

Leopard steps on to the IMA Caribbean Maxi Challenge podium Boris Herrmann (GER)
Impressed doesn't really cut it. Herrmann had a bad end to the last Vendée Globe, smacking into a big fishing boat (steel, bad idea, Boris) just as he was about to take a podium, but this time he is flying. A new boat, yes, that's always nice, but the way that the German skipper is putting his environmental goals above almost all else this time is actually pretty moving. Plus with a total focus upon the elephant in the room... lifecycles. Finally, finally!! (Google the Malizia Mangrove Park)

Leopard steps on to the IMA Caribbean Maxi Challenge podium Last Month's winner:
Dominique Knuppel (URU)
'Dominique works very hard too at encouraging and supporting children from disadvantaged neighbourhoods, teaching them a sport and a new way of seeing life' - Nora Artagaveytia; 'I had a chance to sail with her. She is amazing!!!' - Guillermo Ball; 'She loves her sailing, and she encourages other young (and not so young) people in a country where very few men and women sail. And she is really quite good at it!!!' - Rico Fliarico.

Dr. Kathy Abbass of the Rhode Island Marine Archaeology Project (RIMAP) will present "Ships and Shipwrecks of the Revolution in Rhode Island" on Thursday evening March 24, at 7p.m. eastern at the Herreshoff Marine Museum in Bristol. More than 200 vessels are known to have been lost in Rhode Island waters during the Revolutionary War. These include Royal Navy ships run ashore around Aquidneck Island and burned on purpose to avoid capture, British owned transports and victuallers scuttled as block ships to protect troops in Newport from the threatening French fleet, Colonial craft destroyed by British and Hessian raids in Warren, and many vessels lost during the usual marine peril that was common in the local 18th-century maritime economy.

Industry News
Antigua Sailing Week (ASW) is delighted to announce the return of Virgin Atlantic as the Transatlantic Airline sponsor of the 2022 event.

The return to travel after the lengthy hiatus has presented a renewed interest in Caribbean destinations for sport tourism and leisure. For Virgin Atlantic, the move to support ASW, endorses its desire to support safe, hassle-free movement between its destinations for participation in these activities.

Virgin Atlantic's weekly schedule features flights from Heathrow into and out of VC Bird International Airport Antigua on Tuesdays, Thursday and Saturdays. This means there are perfectly timed flights for participants who want to race in the optional Peters & May Round Antigua Race on Saturday 30th April, and for all sailors who plan to race in Antigua Sailing Week starting on Sunday 1st May. Spectators planning to travel to Antigua for the week long celebration of yacht racing will find that the schedule fits nicely as they can arrive on Saturday in time for the opening festivities and leave a week later, also on Saturday, after the final prize giving on Friday 6th May.

Any of the ASW participants, family or friends wishing to travel to the event, must email with their needs to take advantage of the event specific offers

The Maltese prime minister, Robert Abela, had put a stop to plans to develop a 700-berth marina in Marsascala Bay in the southeast of the Mediterranean island. Strong and consistent local opposition to the multi-million Euro project, has succeeded over the political intent to develop the facility following poor initial consultation with the local council.

The announcement about the project was made by Abela at a political election campaign meeting. Abela indicated that the project 'would be stopped at once' in response to the strong local opposition. Abela himself lives in Marsascala and said he had listened to the local residents and understood their concerns.

He was quoted by the Times of Malta as saying at the meeting: "I understand that the beauty of this bay is to walk down along the promenade in the evenings and relax. The fear was that the project would kill that. "

The plan has been controversial and generated active opposition from the time it was launched last August.

The Bermuda Race Organizing Committee (BROC) has named Castle Hill Inn - the iconic Relais & Chateaux property on Newport's Ocean Drive - as the newest Official Sponsor of the 2022 Race. With its sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean and Narragansett Bay, combined with its nautical history and world-class service, Castle Hill Inn offers luxury accommodations, fine and casual dining, an on-site spa, and the perfect vantage point to watch the start the 52nd running of the Newport Bermuda Race.

Castle Hill Inn's nautical heritage is built into its very grounds. The historic Lighthouse located on-property not only serves as a beacon for ships navigating Narragansett Bay, but as the starting and finish line for many of Newport's famous yachting races and regattas, including the Bermuda Race. The flagpole on The Lawn at Castle Hill is a replica of the mast and rigging used on the 1905 Herreshoff NY-30 class sailing yachts, designed from archived blueprints from a 1917 vintage NY-30.

Jack Fenwick joins RS Sailing as RS21 Class Manager

It's been a few weeks since I started working for RS Sailing and six years since I joined the RYA before that. Not believing in taking time off between roles, I had 14 hours between jobs before diving straight into the new position and kicked off with a World Match Race Tour Academy Training weekend at Queen Mary Sailing Club in West London on day three of the new job.

So far, although I am still trying to figure out who everyone is, whenever I have asked for help or if something is achievable, the response has been overwhelmingly positive and swift. I guess the part that I wasn't expecting is that everyone I have met at RS is passionate about the sport and its future and wellbeing. It is not all about the bottom line and selling boats but seeing smiling happy people on the water.

Lots of planning is under way for exciting RS21 events and activities over the next couple of years. I am looking forward to working with all of the owners, clubs and organisations and mainly seeing people with big grins on their faces. I was lucky enough to compete in the recent UK RS21 Match Race Finals, and I can tell you, sending it down the final run of our last race with the kite up in 30 knots of breeze, the smile is still there.

A Devon college at the forefront of helping women break into marine engineering is celebrating International Women's Day today.

South Devon College wants to help change the perception of the marine industry by encouraging more women to work in the sector.

Currently women make up 14.5% of all engineers but there has been an increase in the last few years. An increase that Harriette Wade-West, marine lecturer at South Devon College, has seen reflected in the student population at the Marine Academy.

"We are seeing increasing numbers of female students on marine courses, in engineering as well as boat-building and other disciplines. This is really encouraging to see, and it's great to be at the forefront of this shift.

"Pursuing a career in the maritime sector is a great choice for women as there are so many options and opportunities for a challenging career, with the chance to work anywhere in the world."

Working alongside Princess Yachts, one of the world's leading boat builders, South Devon College offers a marine engineering apprenticeship and the gender split is changing.

"We have reached a 25/75 female to male split and getting a 50/50 split is looking more likely and it will revolutionise the marine industry," explained Alison Thompson, Head of Learning and Development at Princess Yachts.

The organisers of the 26th Shanghai International Boat Show (CIBS 2022), which was scheduled to be held in the Shanghai World Expo Exhibition and Convention Center (SWEECC) from March 31 to April 1, have postponed this year's event in view of the "severe situation of the epidemic in China" and the "sudden confirmed local cases in Shanghai".

CIBS 2022 will now be held from June 22-24 at the National Exhibition and Convention Center (Shanghai).

The Shanghai International Boat Show (CIBS) is one of the most comprehensive and longest running boat shows serving the entire industry. Last year's event attracted around 37,000 visitors and nearly 600 exhibitors.

A boat like the Sun Fast 3600 is all about performance and this boat has speed to burn. Race results to date, both in fully crewed and short-handed races, are impressive and demonstrate this boat is competitive under the IRC handicap rule.

This eye catching boat lives admirably up to the reputation and expectations that go before it with Jeanneau’s previous Sun Fast models.
