18ft Skiffs The Andoo team of Seve Jarvin, Matt Stenta and Sam Newton consolidated yesterday's victory with another outstanding performance to take out today's Race 2 of the 2022 JJ Giltinan 18ft Skiff Championship on Sydney Harbour.

The team grabbed an early lead in the 20-knot Southerly wind and led clearly around the entire course before going on to claim a one minute win from the Tech2 team of Jack Macartney, Charlie Wyatt and Lewis Brake, which also finished in second place yesterday.

Noakesailing (Sean Langman, Ed Powys and Josh Porebski) finished a further 3m13s behind Tech2 in third place, ahead of The Oak Double Bay-4 Pines (Aron Everett), Rag & Famish Hotel (Harry Price) and Lazarus Capital Partners (Marcus Ashley-Jones).

After the first two races, Andoo leads the championship with a total of two points, followed by Tech2 on four points. Rag & Famish Hotel (Harry Price, Josh McKnight and Harry Hall) is in third place on nine points, followed by the defending champion Smeg team (Michael Coxon) and The Oak Double Bay-4 Pines on 15 points.

Shaw and Partners Financial Services (Steve Thomas and Lazarus Capital Partners are equal sixth on 16 points.

Superb finale for 38th Primo Cup-Trophee Credit Suisse
Primo Cup-Trophee Credit Suisse The temperature fell as the tension mounted on the last day of the 38th Primo Cup-Trophee Credit Suisse, a flagship winter event organised by Yacht Club de Monaco. 400 sailors from 14 nations in 5 one design classes (J/70, Smeralda 888, RS 21 & Longtze Premier) were competing, including big names like John Kostecki, winner of the Volvo Ocean Race and America's Cup on USA 17, Michael Illbruck and 470 Olympic medallist Will Ryan.

For J/70s there were two prizes to aim for as the Primo doubles as the fourth and final act of the Monaco Sportsboat Winter Series, this season a qualifier for Monaco teams to win a place at the World Championship in Monaco (14-22 October 2022).

From start to finish in the J/70 it was a battle of wills, with the Swiss on Decouverte-Geo Mod keeping a cool head, peerless in their reading of the course in a 5-10 westerly on the last race. The combative Americans on Good to Go finished 2nd ahead of CER Aprotec-Ville de Geneve. Among Monegasque favourites, Giangiacomo Serena di Lapigio (G-Spot) finished 4th with Ludovico Fassitelli (Junda) in 6th. The latter emerged victorious in the 2021/2022 Monaco Sportsboat Winter Series, ahead of Loïc Pompee (Sailing Racing Team) and Giangiacomo Serena di Lapigio (G-Spot).

Newcomer to the Primo, the RS 21 fleet, was dominated by the Italian Gianluca Grisoli's Beyond Freedom who won three of the five races. Ditto for Smeralda 888 where Black Star triumphed after finishing in the top three in all races, their podium completed by Botta Dritta then Beda.

It was a much tighter finale in the Longtze Premier where Wetfleet won by a whisker, although equal on points with Shensu, in a fascinating contest in Monaco.

39th Primo Cup-Trophee Credit Suisse: 2-5 March 2023.

How The Mini Class Is Coping With The Explosion In The Number Of Racers
Experiencing notable growth during 2020 and 2021 the momentum in the Mini 6.50 has really exploded this past winter. The Mini Class has recorded a marked increase in requests for membership. Yards for building are at capacity, the second-hand market is going mad and training centers are flourishing. As for the race organisers, their waiting lists for events are getting much longer. That is worrying for those seeking to qualify for the 2023 Mini Transat. Tip & Shaft did some surveying as the season opens in the Mediterranean with the Mini Golfe.

While offshore racing as a whole in France is on the uptick, today the appeal of the Mini Transat today seems unprecedented. We have to go back to the years 2006-2008 to find such enthusiasm. Even last year 2021, the Mini Transat recorded its historic record of participants (90), proof of the high level of demand which has gone up a notch again this winter. Since January 1, the Mini Class has actually assigned no fewer than 30 new sail numbers (20 on average over the whole season in past years) and the record of 300 members should be soon be surpassed (294 to date and the season has not yet started).

Winner in prototype on the 2007 edition and race director of the Plastimo Mini Lorient as well as Mini in May, Yves Le Blevec is not really surprised: "The average profile of the minist is a young graduate who wants to offer give him or herself a break, a gap, before their professional life takes off. These people are a decent, solid proposition in front of a bank lender and the adventure continues to make sense. Once you have crossed the Atlantic alone no one can take it away from you."

Too Hot to Handle: Day 3 at St. Maarten Heineken Regatta
The penultimate day of the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta brought on the breeze and some serious action on the water. When you see reefed mainsails throughout the fleet during the starting sequence, you know the day is going to be a big one!

On the first downwind leg for CSA 6 & 7, a couple of bright red kites got redlined; one decapitated and the other a relatively clean halyard blow. These losses translated into wins for competitive teams, who turned the others' misfortune into their fortune as they forged ahead in heavy breeze.

In CSA 7, J111 Spike's spinnaker burst caused them to take 5th place and drop down to third place overall, which let J122 Liquid slide into first place in the current standings. Team L'Esperance took a first in CSA 6 Race 1 today, despite having their own spinnaker malfunctions, as close competitor Rebel lost a kite and was also racing on only a jib for a bit themselves.

Gear losses usually means that teams are pushing the limits, which ultimately shows there is some tough competition out there. Team Liquid reports seeing gusts of up to 30 knots today and they may regret leaving their smaller kites back at home in Antigua. Tomorrow is forecasted to be even bigger breeze and swells overall.

A few boats in CSA1 had some setbacks of their own, in the form of tactical losses on the race course. Race committee made today's long 40 NM course for the fleet a navigator's choice with an ambiguous course of Table Rock near St. Barths over to Blowing Rock at Anguilla — leaving it to the navigator to choose which way to go around St. Maarten.

Several DNFs across the fleet indicated it was a tough day for some teams.

* From Tony Rix:

Sad to read in the EDP that Mike Evans is no longer with us. But what a legacy - locally, nationally and internationally!

A great character, always friendly and helpful. But an inspiring skipper and a fierce competitor!

As a teenager, 75 years ago, I raced against Mike at Norfolk Broads Yacht Club in my National 12 dinghy, crewed by Brian Thrower whose sister Anne later married Mike.

I was also one of his team helping to set up Queen Mary Sailing Club at the new reservoir at Ashford, near London.

But I never achieved the distinction that Mike earned in the sailing world, and gave up racing when I turned 80

And soon it will be my turn to exit , too...
