RORC Caribbean 600 Wraps up in Antigua
The 2022 RORC Caribbean 600 attracted 74 teams with 738 sailors from 32 different nations. The Caribbean classic is back with the most impressive fleet in the 14-year history of the race. Moderate trade winds faded to a lighter breeze during the five days of the race, but that did not stop Jason Carroll's MOD70 Argo setting a new multihull race record in a thrilling finish with Giovanni Soldini's Multi 70 Maserati. There was sizzling competition right through all the IRC Classes and the Class40 Division. ClubSwan 125 Skorpios, skippered by Fernando Echavarri, took Monohull Line Honours after a terrific battle with the VPLP/ Verdier 100 Comanche, skippered by Mitch Booth. Christopher Sheehan's Pac52 Warrior Won was the overall winner, lifting the RORC Caribbean 600 Trophy for the best corrected time under IRC.

Overall Winner and IRC Zero - Christopher Sheehan's Pac52 Warrior One (USA)

The overall winner of the 2022 RORC Caribbean 600 was Christopher Sheehan's Pac52 Warrior One (USA). Second was the VPLP/Verdier 100 Comanche (CAY), skippered by Mitch Booth and third was David Collins' Botin IRC 52 Tala (GBR).

Racing in IRC Zero, Warrior Won's victory was against top-class opposition and the catalyst that propelled the team to an overall win. Tala was second in class, Kate & Jim Murray's Pac52 Callisto (USA) was third and Eric de Turckheim's NMYD54 Teasing Machine (FRA) fourth.

Monohull Line Honours and IRC Super Zero

Dmitry Rybolovlev's ClubSwan 125 Skorpios (MON), skippered by Fernando Echavarri, took Monohull Line Honours for the 2022 RORC Caribbean 600. The elapsed time was 1 day, 16 hours, 39 mins, 51 secs. The VPLP/Verdier 100 Comanche (CAY), skippered by Mitch Booth won IRC Super Zero after time correction. Groovederci Racing - Sailing Poland, sailed by Deneen Demourkas (USA) was runner-up. The Polish National Foundation's Volvo 70 I Love Poland (POL), skippered by Grzegorz Baranowski was third.

Multihull Line Honours and MOCRA Class - Record win for Jason and the Argonauts

Jason Carroll's MOD 70 Argo (USA) crossed the finish line of the RORC Caribbean 600 to take Multihull Line Honours and set a new Multihull Race Record of 29 hours, 38 mins, 44 secs. Giovanni Soldini's Multi70 Maserati (ITA) was just 2 minutes and 13 seconds behind Argo, but did win the MOCRA Class after time correction. Peter Cunningham's PowerPlay (CAY) led in the early part of the race but finished third over the line. Gilles Lamire's Multi50 Groupe GCA-1001 Sourires (FRA) was third after MOCRA time correction.

Class40 Division - Gone in 61 seconds

The winner of the nine-strong Class40 division went to the wire with a dramatic finish. Charles-Louis Mourruau's Guidi (FRA) had led for most of the race but stalled as the breeze faded with the finish line beckoning. Finimmo (FRA) took the lead in the last few miles to win by just 61 seconds after racing for well over three days and nights. -- Louay Habib

Uffa Fox 50 Celebration
Cowes and East Cowes organisations unite to commemorate sailor and boat designer Uffa Fox at Cowes Parade, 18 - 21 August. Uffa Fox 50 celebrates the sailing legend's life and marks the 50th anniversary of his death

This includes a sailing regatta organised by The Royal London Yacht Club, a heritage Uffa Fox trail and a display of dinghies designed by Uffa Fox.

A total of twelve organisations in Cowes and East Cowes have come together to plan Uffa Fox 50 - a celebration of Uffa Fox's life and to mark the 50th anniversary of his death. The focal point will be Cowes Parade where there will be a display of around 50 dinghies designed by Uffa Fox, a number of which go back to the 1920s, with some out racing for a couple of hours for the sailing regatta on the Friday and Saturday.

At the Parade visitors will also be directed to the Uffa Fox trail around Cowes and East Cowes where examples of Uffa's history and heritage can be seen at a number of exhibitions. The trail begins at Uffa's place of residence at Commodores House with an exclusive exhibition of his life where families and children will be able to enjoy fun interative activities. The journey continues with trail stops at the Sir Max Aitken Museum, Cowes Heritage, Cowes Library, the Classic Boat Museum and the Shepards Marina where 60 or more Uffa-designed yachts and keelboats will be berthed. Organisers also hope to have on display Coweslip - a Flying Fifteen K192 gifted by Uffa to the Duke of Edinburgh Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth II. A memorial service is being planned on the morning of Sunday 21 August at Uffa Fox's grave in St Mildred's Church, Whippingham.

The Royal London Yacht Club will be running a sailing regatta on Friday 19 and Saturday 20 August for Uffa Fox designed dinghies, keelboats and yachts. So far over 100 boat owners have expressed interest in the event including Firefly, National 12, International 14, Redwing, Albacore, National 18, Jollyboat, Flying Fifteen, Fox 18 and 24 and Atalanta.

The Notice of Race will be published in March. For expressions of interest in the static display and/or racing and for further information contact

Transquadra Speziale! - Ben Rogerson Yacht Design
Transquadra But Ben Rogerson's foxy new 41ft hybrid design offers high performance offshore racing in both fully-crewed and shorthanded formats...

Shorthanded or fully crewed, the smart layout of the BRYD 41 has been designed to cater for both approaches to offshore racing. From the Hamble-based stable of Ben Rogerson Yacht Design (BRYD), the aero sleekness of this twin-ruddered carbon 41-footer oozes speed and purpose. Look more closely at the deck and cockpit layout and you start to see that there will be very few occasions when anyone will need to venture forward of the mast.

Rogerson and his team felt there was a gap in the market for a hybrid in the 40ft range, capable of meeting the growing demand for longdistance double-handed racing but without sacrificing the possibility of competing fully crewed. 'The concept of the boat is largely aimed at the shorthanded market, and that's fundamentally the ethos of the boat,' Rogerson explains. 'The BRYD 41 has been developed more towards achieving a performing IRC shorthanded design, because I think there's quite a few options in terms of shorthanded, and, of course, there are a number of high-performance designs like the Class40. But if you want to go and do well under IRC and be able to take part in some of the world's great offshore regattas, I do think there is a boat that's been missing from the market.

Paul Foerster's Grand Slam 2 Earns Title of J/24 Midwinter Champion
Tampa, FL, USA: Paul Foerster's Grand Slam 2, with crew Mike Brown, Rob Johnston, Ryan Minth and John Skiles, are the 2022 J/24 Midwinter Champions. No racing took place Sunday for the 32 boats at Davis Island Yacht Club in Tampa, FL due to lack of breeze, so the scores through four races became final. Foerster came from Rush Creek Yacht Club in Texas, and nailed scores only in the top two for 7 points. The team will compete in this summer's J/24 World Championship in Corpus Christi, TX. Tony Parker's Bangor Packet started out hot on Friday, but a 10 in the fourth race pushed him to second place with 15 points. Losing the tiebreaker for third place is Mike Marshall's American Garage. James Freedman's LOL prevailed among the impressive 17-boat Corinthian division, and they also placed fourth overall. Following Freedman amongst the amateur teams were Al Constants' Blitz and Steve Callison's Whiskey River.

18 Skiffs Super Sprints

18 Skiffs Super Sprints With the 2022 JJ Giltinan Championship starting on Sydney Harbour next Saturday, today's racing at the Australian 18 Footers League was a final opportunity for teams to sharpen up their crew work in preparation for the world's biggest 18ft skiff regatta.

The club arranged to hold four very short windward-return course races for a cumulative point score but the light winds throughout the afternoon did little to show the talents of the teams or sharpen up the crews for next week's big event.

The overall winner was up for grabs as the fleet went into the final race and Tech2 took an early lead on the first lap of the course.

Keagan York, Bryce Edwards and Phil Marshall were at their best in the conditions and came back strongly over the final lap to grab the race and overall victory from the Tech2 team, with Rag & Famish Hotel (Harry Price) in third place.

Final points in the series were: Finport Finance on 16, Tech2 on 22, Andoo on 23, Noakesailing and The Oak Double Bay-4 Pines on 24 and Black Knight on 30.

It was an impressive performance by the visiting German team which will be contesting the JJ Giltinan Championship next week. -- Frank Quealey, Australian 18 Footers League Ltd.

Sleeping Tiger wakes to win Boat of the Show
It's a new beginning for the RYA Dinghy and Watersports Show, being held for the first time at Farnborough International, and there is certainly a buzz of excitement in the air. The exhibition hall is packed with visitors, with colour everywhere you look as dinghy associations show off their class of boat, attracting new members as the boating boom continues.

For the judging of the Concours d'Elegance Mark Jardine, Editor of YachtsandYachting.com, was joined this year by British Sailing Team ILCA 7 and WASZP sailor Sam Whaley, and they spent most of the morning admiring the incredible display of boats. The attention to detail shown by so many classes made finding a winner especially difficult, but Glen Truswell's International Canoe took top honours, thanks to detailing which was simply breath-taking.

This makes Glen the first two-time winner of the trophy, after his International 14 'Scrumpet' won in 2016.

Coming in a close second was the 1964 Merlin Rocket 'Hullabaloo'. The varnish finish on this 60-year-old classic was beautiful, and the modern additions, such as carbon spars, were sympathetically added with minimal control lines compared to a modern Merlin.

In joint third place were two boats from opposite ends of the spectrum. Both Phil Hodgkins' GP14 and Kyle Stoneham's International Moth were stunningly presented, and even though the two designs were so different Sam and Mark were unable to separate them.

The Concours d'Elegance has now been awarded for 14 years and has recognised a diverse range of boats, from classics with impeccable varnish finishes, to the latest in high tech sailing.

Land Speed Update
ETNZ designers have been working on the team's attempt at the Wind Powered Land Speed World Record.

"One of our biggest challenges has been understanding how to get grip on the ground, so to stop the craft slipping sideways, we rely on tires to bite into the salt. So, that's where it differs a lot from a yacht." He explained. "When you're on water, we just have a foil or a centre board in the water, which resists leeway. We've done as much research as we could possibly do in the time available to figure out what tyres are out there and what may work for us." -- Mechanical Engineer Tim Meldrum

"The front wheel is a custom rim that we've designed and made, and it looks really flat on this side, which is due to having a really huge offset. Our main fuselage is kind of acting like a motorbike, in that we have one wheel at the front. It's really important that we have our steering axis centred exactly on the centre of the tire. So in order to get any steering access on the centre line, we have had to make this rim. If we didn't have it like that, we would get a lot of induced torque into the steering from the rolling resistance, and that would just feedback to the pilot, basically he'd be having to fight the whole time."
