Cape Horners launch register of solo circumnavigations
The International Association of Cape Horners (IACH), has published its multi-crew circumnavigation register to compliment a similar register for solo circumnavigations published in 2020.

This latest roll of honour currently lists 1,848 individual circumnavigations during past Whitbread/Volvo Round the World races, the 1975/6 Financial Times Clipper Race, British Steel/BT Global Challenge races, Trophee Jules Verne, The Race, Oryx Quest, Barcelona and Portimão events.

Both circumnavigation registers have multi-search facilities that allow users to interrogate by name, yacht, nationality, event and time.

Britain tops the multi-crew list with 715 circumnavigations followed by France (232), New Zealand (200) Netherlands and USA (75) land-locked Switzerland with 71, Australia and Spain (51), Finland (47), Italy (41) and Sweden (40)

There are 15 yacht crews the compilers have not been able to identify (listed in red within the Register) who have competed in the Trophee Jules Verne, 1997/8 Whitbread, 2000/1 and 2004 BT/Global Challenge events, and 2011/12, 2014/15 and 2017/18 Volvo Ocean Races. We encourage these crews to come forward and register their achievements to make this historic record complete.

Within the Solo lists, 180 have sailed solo non-stop around the globe via the 3 Great Capes and 150 more have done the same with stops. France leads the nationality list with 90 non-stop circumnavigations and 27 with stops. This compares with Britain (28 non-stop and 24 with stops) and USA (6 non-stop and 27 with stops)

The current record for the fastest multi-crewed circumnavigation is held by Francis Joyon and his French crew with a time of 40 days 23h 30' 30" set in 2017 aboard their 30.5m trimaran IDEC Sport.

The fastest solo non-stop circumnavigation is held by Frenchman François Gabart with a time of 42 days 16h 40' 3" set in 2017 aboard the 30m trimaran Ultim MACIF.

Dublin Bay Old Gaffers to Hear Tale of Baidin, a Chameleon Nesting Dinghy
Mark Sweetman's nesting dinghy under spritsail. Photo courtesy Afloat magazine. Click on image to enlarge.

Nesting Dinghy In the latest Dublin Bay Old Gaffers Zoom talk Mark Sweetman will recount his search for a nesting dinghy design to suit his needs and how he ended up building one himself.

For a long time, Mark wanted a hard tender that was good to row and sail, as opposed to the ubiquitous inflatable dinghy with an obligatory outboard motor. But while an inflatable dinghy could be deflated and stored easily under a berth, the storage of a hard dinghy would be a challenge. Then at the London Boat Show a few years ago he saw the solution - a nesting dinghy that divided in two with one half sitting neatly inside the other, so occupying only half the original space when stored.

There were no nesting dinghies - new or used - available for sale anywhere so there was no option but to build one himself.

The Eric Twiname Junior Championships are Back in the UK
The Eric Twiname Junior Championships is back after a two-year absence - and entries are now open.

The RYA's iconic "battle of the regions" pits young sailors from across the country against each other, representing their RYA Region or Home Country.

But the regatta is so much more than just a competition - it's as much about nurturing young sailors in a racing environment and empowering them to learn and develop.

The Eric Twiname Junior Championships, lovingly known as the ETs, will once again return to long-term hosts Rutland Sailing Club from April 30 to May 2.

Show Guide

----------------------------------------------

Olympic gold medallists Eilidh McIntyre and Dylan Fletcher will be among a host of British Sailing Team athletes at the year's RYA Dinghy and Watersports Show presented by Suzuki.

The Tokyo 2020 stars will officially open the show, which this year takes place at the new venue of Farnborough International on February 26 and 27.

McIntyre and Fletcher made history last summer, claiming gold medals for Team GB in the women's 470 and 49er classes respectively.

McIntyre (Saturday only) and Fletcher (Saturday and Sunday) will joined by new crews Martin Wrigley and Rhos Hawes to meet fans - and show off their Tokyo 2020 gold medals - on Sailors' Corner.

They will also be giving insights into their lives at the pinnacle of sailing in the Close to the Action talk on the main stage alongside SailGP's Matt Gotrel.

The pair will be joined by British Sailing Team athletes Hannah Snellgrove, Megan Brickwood, James Grummet, James Peters, Steph Orton, Dan Budden, Nick Robins and Sam Whaley, as well as team boss Mark Robinson.

The athletes will be giving talks, masterclasses, handing out awards and helping run the trapeze rig where youngsters can try their hand on the wire under expert supervision.

British Sailing Team meteorologist Simon Rowell is back again to chat all things weather, team strategist Mark Rushall returns for his ever-popular tactics talks and coach Jonny McGovern will reveal his top tips for getting a good start.

Head to rya.org.uk/events/dinghy-show for the full line-up of speakers, stages and exhibitors, or to buy tickets.

The RYA's Racing department will be at the show in force, led by Director of Racing Ian Walker who will be giving several talks over the course of the weekend.

----------------------------------------------

Barton Marine will host live demonstrations, competitions, and giveaways on stand F64 at the RYA Dinghy Show 26-27 February in Farnborough. The Barton team is displaying and selling the full dinghy equipment range to visitors from the stand - and keep an eye out for the huge multi-rider SUPs donated by Barton positioned around the show for the RYA Onboard programme!

The expert team of in-house dinghy sailors and deck gear connoisseurs will be on hand to guide you through the Barton range and help choose the perfect kit for repairs, upgrades and full rigging projects. With over 1500 precision engineered products in the range it's a fair bet they can provide for any deck gear solutions you require. From ex GB Olympic squad sailor Christian Brewer to Harry Newton, our Barton Rising Star, there is a wealth of knowledge to tap into and collect an exclusive 'Barton Racing' hull sticker in the process.

----------------------------------------------

The WEST SYSTEM® Technical Team will be running a series of live epoxy demonstrations, on stand F60 at the RYA Dinghy & Watersports Show, focussing on the Mini Pack.

The Mini Pack is a one-stop-pack for small repair jobs, and includes resin, hardeners, two fillers, gloves and more. This demonstration will explore how the contents can be used to effect repairs and explores techniques for fileting, bonding and the use of glass reinforcement.

Demos are daily at 12pm and 2.30pm on the Wessex Resins & Adhesives stand (F60) - no need to book, just turn up and learn:

Best protective practices
Correct measures for best results
How to extend the application window
To effectively use peel ply
Damage repair techniques

WEST SYSTEM and PRO-SET products are market-leading in the marine industry and trusted by both professional boat builders and home project hobbyists worldwide.
