RORC Caribbean 600 Blasts Off in Antigua
The 13th edition of the RORC Caribbean 600 started on time from Antigua on Monday 21 February. The IRC Super Zero start was nothing short of hell-raising, with Comanche reaching at full speed towards the Pillars of Hercules, then hardening up to take the inside line perilously close to the cliffs. VO65 Groovederci Racing - Sailing Poland, sailed by Deneen Demourkas was in close quarters. As the two leaders tacked out, they crossed with the massive ClubSwan 125 Skorpios (MON) and the Volvo 70 Ocean Breeze coming inshore on starboard. In the MOCRA start, Peter Cunningham's MOD70 PowerPlay (CAY) flipped a wheelie on final approach before blasting off into the lead in a ball of spray at over 25 knots.

Seventy-four teams with over 700 sailors from 32 countries started the race. The Royal Ocean Racing Club's 600-mile race around 11 Caribbean islands had a spectacular start with 15 knots of wind from the northeast gusting up to 20 knots.

Four hours into the race, Giovanni Soldini's Multi70 Maserati (ITA) was leading the Multihull Class from Peter Cunningham's PowerPlay and Jason Carroll's Argo (USA). In the race for Monohull Line Honours, the leader by just a mile, was Dmitry Rybolovlev's ClubSwan 125 Skorpios, skippered by Fernando Echavarri. The VPLP/Verdier 100 Comanche, skippered by Mitch Booth was second on the water. With just over two hours to go until the first sunset of the race, the majority of the fleet were making good progress to Barbuda, the first and only mark of the course. -- Louay Habib

America's Cup - Ineos Britannia | Meet the Crew: Neil Hunter

Neil Hunter Meet 26-year-old Neil Hunter, a force to be reckoned with as he enters his third America's Cup campaign.

To get the latest news from INEOS Britannia direct into your inbox, sign up to the team's exclusive newsletter now here.

Neil Hunter is no longer the new kid on the block. At age 26, Hunter is already entering his third America's Cup Campaign, a rarity for sailors of his age. From being the last sailor to be recruited on to the team's AC35 campaign (through the Youth America's Cup), Neil is now an integral member of the AC37 team, proving his strength and skill as a sailor along the way.

Hunter himself hails from a sailing background, inspired by ambitious sailing parents. It is his own determination, however, alongside physical and mental strength that enabled his career to take off. In the first edition of INEOSBritannia's 'Meet The Crew' series in the team's AC37 campaign, Hunter joins us to look back on his childhoodand talk us through how he reached the upper echelons of sailing in the America's Cup.

"Growing up on the Isle of Arran, I have been sailing my whole life," said Hunter, as his father was a professional yacht skipper and his mother, Sally Hunter, helped make history as part of Maiden in the 1989/90 Whitbread Round the World Race. Fast-forward to 2022, however, and Hunter is already writing his own history, not only being one of the youngest members of INEOS Britannia's sailing squad, but already having the notable experience of two America's Cup campaigns under his belt.

BSI Rigging help you prepare for your 2022 sailing season
BSI Rigging At BSI Rigging, your standing rigging is our number one priority, and we are working with riggers and certified BSI agents to help customers prepare for their planned summer regattas and cruises in 2022. So, let's start 2022 as we mean to go on and help you prepare and maintain your rig.

Several factors will affect the life expectancy of your standing rigging. Its age, sea miles and weather conditions when racing and during passage sails. Also, how your rig is tunned and how often you carry out maintenance checks, plus those traumatic events such as knockdowns, crash gybes, groundings and general environmental conditions all play their part.

In order to prolong the life of your rigging, we are advocates in preventive maintenance. This process does a number or key things; it protects the structural integrity of your yacht's rigging, it can help enhance your performance on the water, it will help your rigging last longer and perhaps the most important of all it looks to protect the safety of the crew.

Speak to your local BSI Rigging expert who will be able to inspect your rigging, replace any parts with genuine BSI Rigging parts, lubricate and tune your rig to give you peace of mind and the best chance at getting the most out of your 2022 season - www.bsidk.com

BSI Rigging is part of the BSI Group of companies which includes, GORI Propeller, Moonlight Portlights and Hatches, Hundested Propeller, Jefa Steering and OYS Rigging.

Tokyo stars announce new line-ups for Paris tilt Olympic champion sailors Dylan Fletcher and Eilidh McIntyre have revealed the teammates they will pair up with for a shot at a second gold medal.

Fletcher made history alongside Stuart Bithell at Tokyo 2020 as the pair became the first Brits to win Olympic gold in the 49er class.

Following Bithell's retirement from Olympic sailing, Fletcher has teamed up with Rhos Hawes, a rising star in the 49er class who won the under-23 European title in 2017.

McIntyre also sealed her place in the history books in Tokyo, taking the top spot in the women's 470 with Hannah Mills.

In doing so she followed in the footsteps of her dad Mike, who won the Star class at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul.

Mills, who became the most successful female Olympic sailor in history off the back of the win, has retired from Olympic sailing to concentrate on the SailGP circuit and her environmental campaigning.

For Paris 2024, 470 crews must be mixed - and McIntyre has now forged a partnership with Martin Wrigley, training partner to Tokyo 2020 Olympians Luke Patience and Chris Grube.

Meanwhile, two-time Olympian Saskia Tidey has teamed up with 20-year-old Freya Black in the 49erFX after Charlotte Dobson called time on her Olympic career.

A national champion in the 29er class, Black is returning to skiff racing after competing in the mixed 470 class for the past two years.

Other new pairings for 2022 include Chris Taylor/James Grummett, Nick Robins/Dan Budden and Arran Holman/James Taylor, all in the 49er class.

Amy Seabright (470), Kirstie Urwin (Nacra 17), Nikki Boniface (Nacra 17) and George Povall (ILCA 6/470) have retired from the British Sailing Team.

The first major event of 2022 for the British Sailing Team will be the Princess Sofia Regatta in Palma, Mallorca, in early April.

Musto Skiff Class Confirmed to Join the Princess Sofía Regatta 2022
The International Musto Skiff Class Association is pleased to confirm that the class has accepted an invitation to participate in the prestigious Princess Sofía Regatta 2022 in Palma, Mallorca, with a four-day event scheduled over 31st March to 3rd April.

The Princess Sofía Regatta premiered in 1968 and has since been held annually in the Bay of Palma de Mallorca, except for 2020 due to the pandemic. The international sailing regatta is well known for attracting the best crews of the Olympic sailing classes, as well as some of the best non-professional sailors from several of the worlds most established classes.

This year marks the 51st edition of the Princess Sofía Regatta, which will be taking place at Club Nàutic s'Arenal (CNA) in Palma, Mallorca. The venue is already familiar to the Musto Skiff class, having been the host for the well-attended ACO 8th Musto Skiff World Championships in 2017.

The regatta will be an ideal opportunity for the class to come together for some long-awaited competitive racing in preparation for the ACO 11th Musto Skiff World Championships 2022, which is scheduled for late June in Kiel, Germany.

As part of this year's Princess Sofía Regatta, the racing format for the Musto Skiff class will consist of 12 races over the four days (31st March to 3rd April 2022), with the Musto Skiff's confirmed to launch off the beach.

The Musto Skiff class will be added to the online entry form as soon as the NOR is published.

MG Motor Ireland Are New Sponsors Of "Sailing Club of the Year" Title
The Afloat.ie-administered "Sailing Club of the Year" award has been running continuously and successfully since 1979, yet in all its 43 years of honouring outstanding achievement across a wide range of criteria by Ireland's diverse and nationally-spread yacht and sailing clubs, the title has had only three different main sponsors.

But times change, and even though the basic tenets of club success remain the same, the clubs themselves are now functioning in a very different world in which environmental considerations are taking centre stage, a factor which is fundamental to the new arrangement.

This week it is announced that, with immediate effect, MG Motor Ireland are taking over the sponsorship, and thus the joint winners for 2022, Lough Ree Yacht Club and the Shannon One Design Association - announced on New Year's Day - are now sharing the title of the MG Motor "Sailing Club of the Year 2022".

MG is of course one of the most distinctive and historic brands in international automotive history. During the past decade, however, it has been completely re-directing its product range towards an eventually total use of EVs (Electric Vehicles), and the latest 2022 range, with its further advances in design and technology, has been favourably received by the market in Ireland.

The remarkable diversity of the sailing clubs of Ireland is reflected in the many factors which are taken into consideration in assessing the winners, and back in 1990, the special nature of the Irish sailing scene was further acknowledged by including One-Design Class Associations in the overall eligibility list.

The Afloat.ie MG Motor "Sailing Club of the Year" award emerges from the pandemic stronger than ever, its role paramount in highlighting the best of Ireland's many, varied and successful sailing clubs in a strong and time-honoured tradition with a new eco-friendly foundation. -- WM Nixon
