Multihull top 10 for the RORC Caribbean 600
This year's RORC Caribbean 600 features a spectacular MOCRA Class with 10 multihulls in action. Whilst the overall winner of the RORC Caribbean 600 will be the monohull with best corrected time under IRC, racing under the MOCRA rating rule, many of the multihull class of 2022 are new to the race and the winner, after time correction, is wide open. The 600-mile RORC classic will headline a Line Honours re-match for three 70-foot trimarans which went hard and fast for the line in this year's RORC Transatlantic Race.

Giovanni Soldini's Multi70 Maserati (ITA) won the 3,000-mile race by a paper-thin margin and also holds the RORC Caribbean 600 Race Record (2019 - 30 hours, 49 minutes, 00 seconds). Peter Cunningham's PowerPlay (CAY) and Jason Carroll's Argo (USA) will be looking to push Maserati all the way for the 2022 RORC Caribbean 600. PowerPlay took Line Honours in 2020 by less than five minutes from Argo, with Maserati third. The wild card for Multihull Line Honours is Antoine Rabaste's Ultim'Emotion 2 (FRA), which has a waterline advantage over the three 70-foot trimarans. The multihull leader on the water is expected to change many times - be prepared for a photo-finish, potentially at record pace.

All three 70-footers have crew changes since the RORC Transatlantic Race, with Argo bringing in specialist trimmer Pete Cumming, Maserati have added the young French talent of Thomas Joffrin and the legendary Loïck Peyron has strengthened the PowerPlay team.

This year's race has attracted a fascinating entry of multihulls, all of which are very capable of winning the MOCRA Class. With 10 teams entered, this is the second largest entry for multihulls in the 14-year history of the RORC Caribbean 600. -- Louay Habib

Vendee Globe 2024
The application process for the 2024 Vendee Globe opened yesterday (February 14) and will remain open until October 2, 2023. Not surprisingly, given the command that this race holds over the imagination of the French public and dreams of many international sailors, the event is expecting plenty of interest.

"I am so happy with the tremendous enthusiasm of the skippers and their sponsors for the Vendee Globe," said Alain Leboeuf, President of SAEM Vendee and President of the Department of Vendee, in an article on the event's webpage. "More and more of them are wanting to take the start. From this point forwards we need to provide visibility and transparency on the rules of participation for this 10th edition. That is now done, with the publication of the Notice of Race more than three years from the Start.

"In order to anticipate and support the commitment of many projects, we have decided to increase the maximum number of starters to 40, i.e. six more places than in 2020," continued Leboeuf. "Nevertheless, our primary duty, as an organizer, is to ensure their safety, which is why we have decided to strengthen the qualification process." -- David Schmidt

NEW! Short-Handed Bermuda Return Race After The NBR
What goes down must come up. And the boats that race to the Onion Patch next June in the 2022 Newport Bermuda Race - the vast majority of them, at least - must make their way back home to the Eastern Seaboard of the United States. To help facilitate a safe and enjoyable journey back, the Cruising Club of America (CCA) has joined forces with the New York Yacht Club (NYYC) and the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club to create the Bermuda Short-Handed Return, a post-NBR race to Newport.

The inaugural edition of the race will start on Sunday, June 26, 2022, off St. George's on Bermuda's northeast corner and will finish off Newport, R.I. The race is open to singlehanded and doublehanded crews. With the fleet starting together, there is an increased likelihood of boats able to assist in the event of an emergency - each entry will carry a tracker - in addition to the increased vigilance and preparation that comes with any race.

The Short-Handed Return is also hoping to capitalize on the recent increase in interest in short-handed racing, including the ongoing discussion regarding its potential inclusion as an Olympic discipline in 2028 or beyond.

Registration for the race recently opened, and there are already 13 entries and another four committed, with boats ranging in size from 32 to 50 feet. The NOR and the complete entry list can be found here.

Frenchman Robert Scharr from Brittany is the 41st entry in the Global Solo Challenge
Robert Scharr This, especially at the time of the first edition of the Vendee Globe. However, back then he didn't have the financial means nor the time.

When he saw the announcement of the Global Solo Challenge he saw the opportunity to fulfill his dream with his boat YAKO an ULDB designed by Patrick Yalta and self-built. Robert is the 12th French skipper to enter the GSC within a very global list of entrants of 13 different nationalities.

What brought you to like single-handed sailing?
A first solo experience led me to a 53-day navigation from Abidjan to Brittany to bring my sailboat back. I had a lot of fun there, a great experience, which I want to repeat.

Boat name: YAKO
Sail Number: FRA 43054
Boat design: Enfant perdu (Patrick Balta)
Year built: 2014

Sydney Harbour Regatta
Early indications are that Middle Harbour Yacht Club's (MHYC) 17th Sydney Harbour Regatta (SHR), to be held over the first weekend of March, will be hotly contested with the return of past champions and up-and-coming challengers.

Bob Cox's DK46, Nine Dragons, is a strong contender for the Open Class (IRC/ORC) Division being sailed on offshore courses. The MHYC boat won its division last year. She also won the Club's challenging Sydney Short Ocean Racing Championship in November after a close battle with Gerry Hatton's M.A.T. 1245, Bushranger, which came off second best by a mere point.

Bushranger returned the favour, winning the inaugural NSW ORC Championship on the weekend, beating Nine Dragons which did not make the top three.

Another DK46, LCE Old School Racing (David Elliott/Mark Griffith) from RPAYC, is expected to be challenging all comers following her third on countback at the SSORC (equal points with Bushranger) and a strong Rolex Sydney Hobart performance.

A third DK46, Khaleesi, is currently having work done, but Rob Aldis, is working quickly to have her ready in time. Cox hopes his clubmate's boat is ready too, as their results normally come down to the wire.

Jan Newland presented with the first Yngling NSW Championship entry. Newland, who just missed the podium with Yertl in 2021, is as competitive as her famous late father, Graham, who won two Sydney Hobarts representing MHYC.

Racing in the Super 30 division, consisting of Melges 32, Farr 30s and others of a similar ilk, will be outstanding judging by the 15 already listed to start. Andrew York and REO Speedwagon have topped a few podiums, as has last year's SHR winner, Bruce Tavener's Ophir and Peter Woodhead's XC3SS.

A renaissance in the Sydney 38s, with 19 racing throughout NSW, has translated to hotter competition.

In addition to those classes and divisions mentioned above are: Super 50, Adams 10, Farr 40, J24, J70, Cavalier 28, Sydney 36, Super 20 and 40, MC38 and Performance Non-Spinnaker classes and the Historical 18 foot skiffs. -- Di Pearson, MHYC media

Two new personalities at the heart of the Bol d'Or Mirabaud organization

Yann Petremand, organizing committee president
Born on the Lake Geneva shores, Yann Petremand quickly found himself on the lake aboard his family's sailboats: his father and grandfather were passionate about sailing and regattas; a passion they passed on to their son/grandson.

Yann is also a passionate regatta sailor, very attached to the heritage and history of boats on Lake Geneva. A member of the Societe Nautique de Genève "for as long as I can remember," he was elected president of the Sailing Circle in 2015. "It's kind of my second home," he likes to say. A volunteer for more than 20 years at the SNG, he now takes over the BOM organizing committee presidency, after having handed over the reins of the Sailing Circle to Rene Grept last year resulting in a smooth transition.

Alexandra Peyron, event coordinator
Welcome to the SNG Alexandra! How would you like to introduce yourself to the Bol d'Or Mirabaud competitors? "Thank you! I am humbled to learn all I can about the inner workings of this iconic event, and I am looking forward to joining this great team of volunteers who work to make this regatta such a special event year after year. Like Yann, sailing is a family affair for me. My mother had a sailing school for a long time, a great playground for those who appreciate the sea and water sports!

IBEX, North America's largest boat equipment trade show returns to the Tampa Convention Center in September

With more relaxed travel restrictions anticipated this year, organisers hope to see international exhibitors and visitors return to IBEX in September

Organisers of the 2022 International BoatBuilders' Exhibition and Conference (IBEX) announced that registration for booth space has opened for North America's largest marine parts and equipment trade show.

Nearly 90% of exhibitors who attended the in-person 2021 event are said to have already renewed their exhibit space. In addition to the show's two main exhibit halls, outdoor display space and dock space for exhibitors wishing to demonstrate product on the water are also now available for booking.

In anticipation of reduced travel restrictions this year as the Covid-19 pandemic shifts to an endemic phase, show organisers anticipate a strong return of international exhibitors in 2022.

Scheduled to run from September 27-29 at the Tampa Convention Center, IBEX is owned and operated by the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) and RAI Amsterdam. Full show and space request details are available on the show website.

The Bermuda Race Organizing Committee (BROC) has named Castle Hill Inn - the iconic Relais & Châteaux property on Newport's Ocean Drive - as the newest Official Sponsor of the 2022 Race. With its sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean and Narragansett Bay, combined with its nautical history and world-class service, Castle Hill Inn offers luxury accommodations, fine and casual dining, an on-site spa, and the perfect vantage point to watch the start the 52nd running of the Newport Bermuda Race.

Castle Hill Inn's nautical heritage is built into its very grounds. The historic Lighthouse located on-property not only serves as a beacon for ships navigating Narragansett Bay, but as the starting and finish line for many of Newport's famous yachting races and regattas, including the Bermuda Race. The flagpole on The Lawn at Castle Hill is a replica of the mast and rigging used on the 1905 Herreshoff NY-30 class sailing yachts, designed from archived blueprints from a 1917 vintage NY-30.

With the Castle Hill Lighthouse marking the start of the Newport Bermuda Race again this year, sailing enthusiasts, fans and onlookers will gather on The Lawn at Castle Hill on June 17, 2022, to enjoy panoramic views of the ocean and watch each class of sailboats commence the 635nm race to Bermuda. With its close proximity to Fort Adams, where registration and other race-related events will take place, Castle Hill Inn is the perfect place to stop for a cocktail, bite to eat, or relaxing spa treatment for sailors and their shore crew of friends and family in town.
