American Magic prepares to pack-out of Auckland
The last remaining Challenger from the 36th America's Cup is packing up their base and preparing to leave Auckland.

American Magic, representing the New York Yacht Club has pulled all their equipment out of one of their temporary bases, and it is now being dismantled. The roof was dismantled on Wednesday.

Sail-World attempted to contact the team for comment, but did not get a reply.

Sail-World previously reported that the team had been trying to obtain quarantine positions in Auckland, so they could start sailing from September 17, 2022 - the first permitted sailing date for an America's Cup team who competed in AC36.

Those requests were all bounced by the New Zealand Government. However the same body did get caught, admitting DJ's as entitled to special exemption. With one being able to enter New Zealand on three different occasions, when the MIQ Lottery attracts up to 20,000 New Zealanders hoping to draw one of 3,500 spots offered. the inequitable lottery system has since been suspended indefinitely.

By sailing out the New Zealand summer, American Magic would have then been able to make a decision as to whether to re-locate to their US Base at Bristol RI, or go to the venue for the next America's Cup.

The venue for AC37 is expected to be announced on March 31, 2022. -- Richard Gladwell

Rolex Giraglia 2022
The Yacht Club Italiano, organiser of the 69th edition of the classic offshore regatta, is pleased to announce the opening of registrations and the publication of the Notice of Race for the Rolex Giraglia. In 2022 the race will return to its original format consisting of the Sanremo-Saint-Tropez leg, 3 days of coastal races and windward-leeward in French waters, followed by the start of the long race, scheduled for Wednesday 15 June: a 241-nautical mile course starting from Saint-Tropez, rounding the Giraglia rock and finishing in Genoa.

The Rolex Giraglia 2022 will set off on Friday 10 June from Sanremo, with a picturesque departure on the stroke of midnight for the Sanremo-Saint-Tropez leg, covering around 60 miles and representing the traditional prologue to the Rolex Giraglia week. Friday 10 and Saturday 11 will be dedicated to welcome and registration procedures in Saint-Tropez, with the second act of the regatta kicking off on Sunday 12 June at 11 a.m. in the form of the first inshore race on the beautiful regatta course in the Gulf of Saint-Tropez. Racing will continue through Tuesday 14 June. The French portion of the Giraglia will culminate with the much-awaited Rolex Crew Party on Tuesday evening, before the long race sets sail at midday on Wednesday 15 June. The week of racing will end on Saturday 18 June with the awards ceremony for the Rolex Giraglia taking place at the headquarters of the Yacht Club Italiano in Genoa.

The regatta is open to all IRC and ORC/ORC Club rated boats with an overall length of more than 9.14 metres. These will be divided into the following groups: Group 0 (ORC 0 and IRC 0), with length of over 18.05 metres; Group A (ORC A and IRC A): - Classes: 0 - 1 - 2; Group B (ORC B and IRC B): - Classes: 3 - 4.

The Giraglia was created in 1953 as a 241-nautical mile offshore race. It has grown consistently since then, and now includes a feeder race from Sanremo and three days of inshore races in the bay of Saint-Tropez. In 2022 this classic regatta celebrates its 69th anniversary.

One design sailing will return also in 2022 under the iconic sign of "Melges" and with the Melges World League regatta circuit.

Since 2008, the launch season of the competitions dedicated to the Melges 32 fleet, to which the Melges 20 and Melges 14 fleets have been added over time, the regattas organized by Melges Europe have continued in constant growth and with important evolutions; on their own regatta fields, scattered across three continents, the biggest names in world sailing met and continue to compete on equal terms.

More than 30 teams are expected at the start between Melges 32 and Melges 20 plus more than 20 helmsmen of the Melges 14.

The debut event will be reserved for the Melges 20 and Melges 14 fleet on the Tyrrhenian regatta course of the Yacht Club Isole di Toscana in Marina di Scarlino, already home of the Melges 20 World Championship in 2016.

Despacito
In America's Cup land, two plus two very often equals five and we all know that's the wrong answer but into the void of the venue discussion, and with a virtual press black-out as Team New Zealand squares the circle slowly or 'despacito' behind closed doors, speculation is rife. The latest to reach us is the photographic evidence that Matteo de Nora met with representatives of the Andalusian capital Malaga at the Dubai Expo where pretty much the whole world of movers and shakers is in attendance. It could mean nothing. It could be everything. But what's very clear is that Malaga is deadly serious about wanting the event.

The irony of meeting in Dubai should not be lost on us. If the money for Team New Zealand is to be found anywhere, the Middle East is the most likely ultimate source. It always was. How the cash is funnelled is largely irrelevant – a trade deal, direct sponsorship, preferred terms on the black stuff, an investment vehicle. Perhaps a combination of everything.

Quite frankly, who cares? But that cash is highly unlikely to be coming from public coffers in any great quantity. These are politicians after all and they're not stupid.

This week: Andrew 'Dog' Palfrey, AC Coach & Multiple World Champ
This week we let 'Dog' off the leash. Occasionally referred to as Andrew Palfrey, Dog is ready to answer your questions on 'Race Speed'.

Have you noticed how there are some boats that seem to have the best speed in a training session or on an open race course? But as soon as they find themselves in busy traffic, they're out the back door? Maybe it's something you've experienced yourself...

That's what this session is all about, and why Dog is one of the very best you could hope to answer your questions and solve your problems in a real-world race situation. Dog is a three-time World Championship winner in the highly competitive Etchells and 5.5 Metre classes, he has represented Australia in the Star class at the Olympic Games, and as a coach he has worked with top teams in the TP52 fleet as well as with Artemis Racing in the America's Cup.

So join 'Dog', Hamish Willcox and Andy Rice for a 60-minute Q&A this Thursday/Friday on Zoom to help solve YOUR 'Race Speed' challenges.

WHEN: Thurs 17 Feb 7pm UK / Fri 18 Feb 8am NZ

Titanic IQFoils Fight
After two days enjoying the sun and friendly training, finally the winds of Lanzarote offer perfect conditions to launch the II Lanzarote International Regatta, with winds between 10 and 16 knots, flat sea with little wave, spectacular for slalom racing. This third day started with the men's races, led by the Dutch Huig Jan Tak, who won 3 victories in the 3 slalom races, although a ninth place in the course race. Second place in the overall classification is held by Israel's Yoav Omer, followed by Brit Matthew Barton. "It was a very long day, but for me it was fun, with good speed, starts and tactics," said the Dutch sailor.

In the Spanish entries, the Canary Islander Angel Granda stood out, who remains in the top 15, but he will need to be in the top 10 to be able to compete in the medal race.

In the women's iQFoil division, it is the English Islay Watson who manages to dominate the classification, followed by the French Lola Sorin and the Italian Marta Maggetti.

For the men's and women's iQFoil finals this Tuesday, two more course races are planned, in addition to the medal races. -- Icarus Sports

Yago Lange Fulfills Foiling Dream
Argentine sailor Yago Lange has made history by becoming the first person in history to foil in front of the Perito Moreno Glacier. Located within the Los Glaciares National Park in Argentina, part of the Patagonia region, the Perito Moreno Glacier covers an area of 250 square kilometres (97 square miles) and is continuing to grow.

Yago Lange, a 49er sailor at the 2016 Olympic Games with his brother Klaus and member of World Sailing's Sustainability Commission, set out to fulfill his dream of foiling in the icy waters of Lake Argentino with the aim of carrying a message of awareness about the conservation of glaciers and the value of water.

For two days, Yago and his travel companion and photographer, Marko Magister, toured Los Glaciares National Park with the aim of amplifying his message.

He said, "My desire as an athlete is to take care of the place that I love so much and that gives me so much and to share the message that it is not just for me, but it is for everyone. Those of us who love the water must protect it."
