Trimaran Use It Again! runs aground
At 6:00 am FR this Wednesday, February 9 (1 hour local), Romain Pilliard, skipper of the Trimaran Use It Again! engaged on the Westabout Record World Attempt with the Spanish navigator Alex Pella, informed his team on land that the trimaran Use It Again! had washed up on the rocks in Cook Bay. The sailors were not injured and a Tug of the Chilean Navy was to arrive on site in the early afternoon French time to help them get back afloat and assess the damage with the aim of then going to the nearest port.

After their passage of Cape Horn, last Thursday, Romain Pilliard and Alex Pella were since sheltered in the canals of Patagonia to let pass a big depression blocking the road to the Pacific.

The explanations of Romain Pilliard, skipper of Use It Again! :

"It was 1am local when a loud noise woke me up. The boat came to a standstill. I immediately understood… We took the helm in turn, ensuring our respective shifts, sailing in Cook Bay during the night to be in place on February 9 for a new depression and before a possible exit window on the 10th to the Pacific. The weather conditions were still good, we were under reduced sail, we were progressing at 6 knots in Cook Bay. Alex was on shifts, and it was my turn to rest. After more than a month at sea, fatigue built up and Alex landed inside and fell asleep. It's a real nightmare! I don't really have the words. I am devastated. I try to evacuate and focus on the urgency of the moment. But I find it hard to believe what happened to us. At that time. Under these conditions. The trimaran is literally laid on the rocks, we are stuck in a mouse hole with rocks all around us. It's surreal to be there. To experience that. After what we have been through in the last few days. We prepared the boat to get out of here, sent a video to the Chilean Navy so that they could get us out of there in the best conditions and as quickly as possible before the arrival of the depression and without damaging the boat too much. The area is not mapped, the exit will be complicated. We are not injured, we will take the boat out of there, put it to safety, the rest we will see."

The Chilean Navy is on site and after assessing the damage and setting up a towing protocol to get out of the uncharted area, they managed to put Use It Again! afloat. The trimaran is progressing alone under motor in the South of the island of Olga towards the entrance to the Beagle Channel. The Chilean Navy always escorts Romain and Alex in case of trouble. The wind is rising to more than 30 knots in the area.

Larger 44Cup Racing Resumes In Lanzarote
With the 44Cup Calero Marinas Lanzarote starting tomorrow, the high performance owner-driver one design class returns to having a double digit-sized fleet for the first time since 2016. Recent additions include the first team with a female owner, in Moscow lawyer Valeriya Kovalenko's ARTTUBE, and German Christian Schwoerer's La Pericolosa with a crew including two time 470 World Champions Nic Asher and Elliot Willis and Beijing gold medallist Will Ryan.

The first time ARTTUBE sailed in their boat was 2021's final event here when they finished an impressive fifth. This year they start with some interesting new graphics on their otherwise fuchsia RC44, drawn by Misha Most, a famous Moscow street artist.

Naturally Chris Bake's Team Aqua returns as holder of the 44Cup leader's 'golden wheels' with the aim of staying on top. This is not the first time they have been in this position. "Every team learns from the last year - you reset, analyse what you did and didn't do well and you try and develop your team," explains Team Aqua tactician Cameron Appleton. This season they have a new crew in Dane Jonas Hviid-Nielsen. "You are always looking to see if there are ways to put a new burst of energy into the team, just to keep everyone on their toes. You have to find ways to develop," continues Appleton.

Another team that has never quite found the form it had when it won the RC44 World Championship in 2012, is John Bassadone's Peninsula Racing, which finished 2021 in eighth. However this could change in 2022 with British two time Olympic Finn gold medallist, Giles Scott now on tactics.

Another change in boat dynamics will also occur on Nico Poons' Charisma, where standing in for regular tactician Hamish Pepper is Italian 44Cup veteran Vasco Vascotto.

World Sailing Rethinks New 'Onerous' Keel Inspection Offshore Racing Rule
A World Sailing re-think is under consideration to exempt Category 3 offshore races from the new requirement for documented structural inspection.

Changes to the World Sailing Offshore Special Regulations (OSR) came into effect on January 1 2022, and mean an additional requirement for yachts taking part in races of Category 0 to Category 3 but now the new rule is itself set to be changed.

According to Afloat sources, the Special Regulations Subcommittee has heard 'significant concern' from several Member National Authorities regarding the application of the new OSR 3.02.2 keel inspections as being overly onerous for Category 3 racers.

The subcommittee has considered these concerns, deemed them valid, and voted to modify the new requirement for Category 3 racers only.

Two-time Olympic medallist Jo Aleh returns to top-level sailing
Jo Aleh always insisted she hadn't retired as a high-performance sailor and will now make a tilt for a third Olympic medal, this time teaming up with Molly Meech in the 49erFX.

The 35-year-old, who won Olympic gold (2012) and silver (2016) with Polly Powrie in the women's 470, has spent most of the last five years coaching, but the draw of Olympic sailing has remained.

Aleh is taking on a new challenge this time around, switching from the 470 in which she achieved so much success to the 49erFX, the women's skiff class used at the Olympics.

She will at least have an experienced hand beside her, teaming up with 2016 Olympic silver medallist and former 49erFX world champion Molly Meech.

Shannon One Designs To Launch Centenary Year With Sold-Out Mad March Dinner in National YC

Shannon OD There are highly individualistic One Design Classes. And then there are the 1922-founded Shannon One Designs. They're in a league of their own. And they'll be launching their Hundred Year Programme for 2022 with a (sold out) Centenary Dinner in the National Yacht Club in Dun Laoghaire Harbour on Saturday 5th March.

Although the class races almost exclusively on the great lakes of the Shannon, it makes occasional excursions to other places like Lough Corrib in Galway and Lough Owel in Westmeath, while they made an impressive Dun Laoghaire debut in the sailing events of the 1924 Tailteann Games on Dublin Bay, when they returned home with the Gold Medal.

The class has long links with the NYC, as the Earl of Granard, NYC Commodore from 1931 to 1941, was also involved with County Longford's North Shannon YC, one of the clubs which made an active input into the foundation of the class in 1921-22.

More recently, the NYC Commodore was Con Murphy from 2005 to 2008, and his wife - former Olympic sailor Cathy Mac Aleavey - is not only a devoted Shannon OD sailor, but she built her boat personally, working with the late Jimmy Furey, the legendary classic boat-builder of Leecarrow in County Roscommon.

Afloat.ie's W M Nixon, who will be one of the speakers at the Dinner in the NYC on March 5th, was introduced to the Shannon ODs by sailing with Alf Delany at the Golden Jubilee Regatta at Lough Derg YC in Dromineer in August 1972.

Ocean Globe Race entrants seek amateur crew
It has been nearly 30 years since ordinary sailors have been able to race around the world. Now, many of the 24 entrants in the 2023 Ocean Globe Race are looking for amateur crews. Opportunities to race onboard Eric Tabarly's famous 1973 Whitbread entry Pen-Duick VI; or a classic Nautor Swan 65, through the Southern Ocean and around Cape Horn, are open.

Marie Tabarly has been actively sailing Pen-Duick VI for many years, as the flagship of her Elemen'Terre Project. It has become a floating think tank, a place of exchange and meeting as well as to reflect on social issues and environmental protection. Joining the Ocean Globe Race continues with this theme, and last week she opened her search for a volunteer crew.

"The decision to take part in a crewed round-the-world race, is not one to be taken lightly, but it is a beautiful tribute to Pen Duick VI and her Jubilee." Said Marie Tabarly, "With this in mind, I am inviting sailors to apply to be crew on board, as this is a lifetime opportunity I wanted to share, and a way to meet new people on this adventure."

2022 crew training will be intense for the first selection of candidates; it includes a programme of races in Spring, including the Armen Race, Round Ireland Race, La Trinité-Cowes, Dhream Cup or Lonely Rock (Fastnet tour starting from Plymouth) and the legendary Tour of the British Isles. Marie will know who to count on by then, and final selections will be announced. To set sail with Marie on Pen Duick VI, click here! Applications close in April.

Marco Trombetti (Co-Skipper and Team Manager) from Italy and Isabelle Andrieu (Team Coach) have entered their Swan 65, TRANSLATED 9, previously the 1977 Whitbread entry ADC Accutrac skippered by Clare Francis. They too, are looking for amateur crew and have received over 700 applications to date, from around the World.

Jan Dejmo
Jan Dejmo The global sailing community is mourning the loss of Jan Dejmo from Gothenberg, Sweden, who passed away recently.

Jan served as an IYRU and World Sailing Committee member from 1990-2016 and made major contributions to the development of the Equipment Rules of Sailing and the Standard Class Rules. He was one of the prime movers behind the development of the Standard Class Rules (SCR) concept for IYRU which has allowed any class to adopt a common format for its class rules and, importantly, to enable manufacturers to produce equipment that could be bought 'off the shelf' and be compliant. This meant drafting class rules that permitted, for example, sails, masts, booms, rudders, centreboards etc to be 'measured' remote from other equipment with which they would be used.

Since it was introduced, manufacturers, measurers, race committees and sailors alike have all benefitted. Thanks to his hard work and dedication with the working party we now have in the Equipment Rules of Sailing (ERS) which now forms a template for any class wishing to use it.

During his career with World Sailing, he served on the Measurement Committee from 1991-2004, and as Vice Chairman between 1995 and 2004, the Equipment Control Sub-committee 2005-2016 (Chairman 2005-2008 & 2013-2016), the International Measurers Sub-committee 1999-2004 (Chairman 2001-2004), Race Officials Committee 2001-2004 and Class Rules Sub-committee 2005-2016.

Jan Dejmo made a significant contribution to the way the sport of sailing operates today and his efforts will never be forgotten. He will be sorely missed by everyone in World Sailing who had the pleasure of working closely with him for more than 25 years.
