18ft Skiffs 100th Australian Championship, Races 4 and 5
Click on image for photo gallery.

18ft Skiffs The Andoo team of Seve Jarvin, Matt Stenta and Sam Newton continued the outstanding form it has shown over the first two days racing with another impressive display in today's Races 4 and 5 of the Australian 18 footer Championship on Sydney Harbour.

On total points, with three wins and two other podium placings from the five races sailed so far, Andoo has already established a 19-points lead over the defending champion Tech2 team of Jack Macartney, Charlie Wyatt and Lewis Brake, with the rookie Rag & Famish Hotel team of Harry Price, Josh McKnight and Harry Hall in third place.

Allowing for each team discarding its worst performance to date, Andoo has a total of five points, Race 2 winner Smeg (Michael Coxon) is next on 11 points, followed by Tech2 on 12, Rag & Famish Hotel on 16, Noakesailing (Sean Langman) and Lazarus Capital Partners (Marcus Ashley-Jones) tied on 22.

Unlike yesterday's gusty 18-23 knots SSE winds, today's racing originally began in light, fluky conditions before a solid breeze came in.

The 100th Australian Championship will continue next Sunday, February 13, with the final two races (Races 7 and 8) of the championship. -- Frank Quealey, Australian 18 Footers League Ltd.

Countdown to the RORC Caribbean 600
With nearly 80 entries racing under the IRC Rating Rule, MOCRA and Class40 division, the 13th edition of the RORC Caribbean 600 is set to be an awesome event. The race has attracted over 600 sailors from 30 different nations and will start off Fort Charlotte, Antigua on Monday 21 February at 1100 AST (1500 GMT).

Monohull Line Honours is likely to be decided by three Maxi Yachts: The Club Swan 125 Skorpios, Verdier/VPLP 100 Comanche, and the Farr 100 Leopard. IRC Super Zero has six versions of the Volvo Open 70 design, plus the 115ft Swan Shamanna, and the Mills 68 Prospector.

Ten Class40s have answered the call and with explosive speed and close competition, it will be a wild ride for teams from France, USA and Italy. Unquestionably this is a tough race for Class40s; with little sleep or respite for crews due to the multitude of sail changes and harsh conditions.

The overall winner for the RORC Caribbean 600 Trophy is decided by IRC time correction. While the Line Honours contenders will be in the hunt for the double, teams racing in IRC Zero and IRC One have an equal chance of winning the race after time correction. -- Louay Habib

Keeping the pace up at home at Monaco Sportsboat Winter Series
Monaco Sportsboat Winter Series Fifty-two international teams (12 nations) were again on the start line of the third and penultimate Act of the Monaco Sportsboat Winter Series (3-6 February) which also marked the start of The Tenzor International Cup J/70 circuit. All have their sights set on the upcoming J/70 World Championship being organised by Yacht Club de Monaco in partnership with FxPro from 14-22 October 2022.

The Brit Paul Goodison, gold medallist at the Beijing Olympics in ILCA 7, with seven world titles in five different classes and participation in the America's Cup on Artemis Racing in 2017, was sailing with the Swedes on Intermezzo which came 4th. Also competing was Finnish match racing supremo Staffan Lindberg, and the brilliant Finn sailor Ed Wright.

Winner this weekend was a YCM member, Giangiacomo Serena di Lapigio (G-Spot), with the Brits on Brutus II putting in a fine performance to come 3rd in the overall ranking (1st in the Corinthian category) just behind the Russian Tenzor Sport, helmed by Milena Nikitina in 2nd. This team also leads the field for the moment in The Tenzor International Cup circuit which will end back in Monaco when the next Monaco Sportsboat Winter Series kicks off weekend 3-6 November 2022.

The J/70 fleet returns to the Principality for the 38th Primo Cup-Trophee Credit Suisse (3-6 March 2022), which also constitutes the fourth and final Act of the Monaco Sportsboat Winter Series. Launched in 1985, the Primo Cup which awards SLAM garments, is reckoned to be the largest European winter one design regatta in the Mediterranean. A hundred teams are expected divided across J/70, Smeralda 888, Longtze Premier and RS 21.

"This boat rewards teamwork."
Peter McClennen and his Gamecock crew walked away with another win in Fort Lauderdale for the IC37 Winter Series - but once again - by just one point.

"These boats are the tightest when it comes to one design. I do a lot of other design racing in the Melges 20 and 24 and nothing is more than one design than an IC37."

With each individual race coming down to feet at the finish line after miles of racing, no lead is considered comfortable in the highly competitive Corinthian fleet. McClennan described a 15-boat length lead coming down to 6 inches in the end.

"The racing is tight, the boats are identical but also the esprit de corps is wonderful across the fleet and it is great to see everyone helping each other and just enjoy sailing," added McClennen.

As the class enters its fourth year, all the IC37 teams in Florida are looking ahead to the next regatta - the MidWinter Championships but then in just a few months time, the teams will be back up north again for the summer season in New England with 20 NYYC Charter boats joining the nearly dozen private boats.

The three-event IC37 Winter Series attracted seven teams for the second stage on February 4-6 in Ft. Lauderdale, FL.

Jade's Journey - Lacking water and huge stress onboard Merci
Click on image for photo gallery.

Jade Destremau 7/2/2022 - Day 49 - As everyone knows, facing strong trade winds sailing up the northern Atlantic is not your preferred champagne sailing conditions.

"Dad always told me that this stretch of water wasn't going to be a picnic. But I didn't expect it to be this much of a challenge" said an eighteen year old Jade Destremau.

Indeed, Merci had used almost all of the energy stored in the batteries when she was faced by a very light wind patch late last week. One of the immediate consequences of this energy deficit was the implementation of drastic restrictions.

"No wind means no energy. It meant switching off the computer, navigation software, wifi and satellite coms... But more importantly, we weren't able to make fresh water!! So, we had to tap into our emergency reserves" Jade continued.

48hours of harsh restrictions later, Merci has managed to restore about 1/3 of her energy capacity and the duo have made an extra 20 litres of fresh water.

"We need this water as we are about to face another couple of days of light wind. We will be careful and try to make some extra water over the next couple of hours. When you do not have all of your three operating systems in good working order, the management of your energy is very stressful" concluded Sebastien Destremau.

* From Russ Saunders: IMOCA: The Market For Masts Is Under Tension

Why are so many masts breaking? This is really a rhetorical question. I have a comment which can be corrected by truly knowledgeable professionals... but here it is: I was an office volunteer with Dawn Riley's America True (USA-51) for the 2000 America's Cup. Our beautiful boat and mast were made up in Nevada from my memory and I asked why this was done From so many years ago, my memory tells me that the answer was that the humidity in Nevada was so low that the water vapor in natural air allowed the carbon fiber to be made with virtually no "holes" caused by moisture in the resin and structure and so was much, much more firm and would not allow stresses to work the material which would cause a break. What I am wondering as a non-professional is this: if hulls and masts are made in very humid areas, could this be the reason for these failures. We had no failures on America True in that America's Cup. One would not think that water molecules would be an issue, but I wonder if this truly is the case. Why such failures> Just a question...
